A Flash animated school project from 2008. At the time neither my computer nor the school's could manage all of the scenes in one file. Nor, for some reason, could either computer manage to render them out to an editable video file. Only now, after rediscovering the project, have I been able to render it out and see it as originally conceived. There are a lot of things I would add or change if I were doing this animation today, but it was my first Flash project so I'll keep it as is. Flaws and all.

Made this in my third year of my animation studies, here in Belgium.
Based on the characters and story of the comic 'Calvin and Hobbes'.

This is just an animationexercice. I don't claim to make the 'perfect Calvin and Hobbes film'. I know the voice isn't very suitable, but i am a Belgian animationstudent. I did what was in my capabilities.
These are about 300 drawings handdrawn with pencil and all inked by hand. All scanned one by one and made the sound.

Hobbes (Calvin and Hobbes)
Hobbes is one of the two main characters in the comic strip Calvin and Hobbes by Bill Watterson. He is Calvin's stuffed tiger and best friend, and is depicted with two distinct identities.
Hobbes' personality
Hobbes is seen in two differentiating perspectives. Calvin perceives him as a live tiger and a best friend. To everybody else, he's a stuffed tiger.
Hobbes is often shown to be smarter and wiser than Calvin when he is perceived as a real tiger. He is seen reading more often than his owner and tries to be the voice of reason when Calvin tries to perform a risky stunt or engage in a dubious scheme. Hobbes' advice mostly has no effect on Calvin, who usually ignores Hobbes's reasoning and winds up getting in trouble for his actions. Because of this, some fans say that Hobbes represents Calvin's conscience. However, Hobbes is shown to be terrible at math, quite possibly worse than Calvin himself.
Hobbes is named after Thomas Hobbes, a philosopher who at times had a poor outlook on life and human nature. When Hobbes is shown to be alive, he is proud of his species and glad not to be a human, showing that when Hobbes comes to life, he too believes he is a real tiger.

Thomas Hobbes
Thomas Hobbes of Malmesbury (/hɒbz/; 5 April 1588 – 4 December 1679), in some older texts Thomas Hobbs of Malmsbury, was an English philosopher, best known today for his work on political philosophy. His 1651 book Leviathan established social contract theory, the foundation of most later Western political philosophy.
Though on rational grounds a champion of absolutism for the sovereign, Hobbes also developed some of the fundamentals of European liberal thought: the right of the individual; the natural equality of all men; the artificial character of the political order (which led to the later distinction between civil society and the state); the view that all legitimate political power must be "representative" and based on the consent of the people; and a liberal interpretation of law which leaves people free to do whatever the law does not explicitly forbid.
He was one of the founders of modern political philosophy and political science. His understanding of humans as being matter and motion, obeying the same physical laws as other matter and motion, remains influential; and his account of human nature as self-interested cooperation, and of political communities as being based upon a "social contract" remains one of the major topics of political philosophy.

A Flash animated school project from 2008. At the time neither my computer nor the school's could manage all of the scenes in one file. Nor, for some reason, could either computer manage to render them out to an editable video file. Only now, after rediscovering the project, have I been able to render it out and see it as originally conceived. There are a lot of things I would add or change if I were doing this animation today, but it was my first Flash project so I'll keep it as is. Flaws and all.

I did not make this animation, nor do I own calvin and hobbes. Calvin and Hobbes belongs to It's creator Bill Watterson and The united press syndicate. That being said, It's pretty cool. Too bad Watterson didn't let his strip be animated. I guess he just didn't want to hand creative control over to a studio. Totally understandable.

Too bad Watterson didn't let his strip be animated. I guess he just didn't want to hand creative control over to a studio. Totally understandable.

The Hobbesian doctrine of sovereignty dictates complete monopoly of power within a given territory and over all institutions of civilian or ecclesiastical authority. On the other hand, Hobbes insists on the fundamental equality of human beings. Mr. Richey discusses the works of Thomas Hobbes and John Locke, two of the most influential philosophers of government in the seventeenth century. Hobbes and Locke were both influential in the development of social contract theory. In Leviathan, Thomas Hobbes advances the idea of a permanent social contract in which people give up sovereignty to a governing authority in order to avoid the state of nature, which is a state of war with "every man against every man." After the Glorious Revolution, John Locke responded with his Two Treatises of Government, in which he argued that people enter into a social contract and form a government in order to preserve their natural rights (life, liberty, and property). In Locke's social contract, the people retain sovereignty and reserve the right to alter or abolish the social contract if the government fails to protect their natural rights. I spend the first part of the lecture providing a summary of Hobbes' Leviathan, followed by a summary of Locke, then I use a graphic organizer to compare and contrast Hobbes' and Locke's social contract philosophies, noting key similarities and differences between the two theorists.

This lecture is designed specifically for AP European History students studying Absolutism and Constitutionalism in preparation for their exam, but can also serve students in other disciplines, such as US History and Government, as well.

O absolutismo de Hobbes

Thomas Hobbes (1588-1679), inglês de família pobre, conviveu com a nobreza, de quem recebeu apoio e condições para estudar, e defendeu ferrenhamente o poder absoluto, ameaçado pelas novas tendências liberais. Teve contato com Descartes, Francis Bacon e Galileu.
Preocupou-se, entre outras coisas, com o problema do conhecimento, tema básico das reflexões do século XVII, representando a tendência empirista. Também escreveu sobre política: as obras De Cive (Do Cidadão) e Leviatã.
O que acontece no século XVII, época em que Hobbes viveu? O absolutismo, atingindo o apogeu, encontra -se em vias de ser ultrapassado, e enfrenta inúmeros movimentos de oposição baseados em ideias liberais.
Hobbes nasceu na era de ouro elisabetana, mas sua vida adulta foi marcada por esses conflitos entre reis e o parlamento. Ele era crítico da democracia e por conseguinte, da monarquia parlamentar inglesa.
Quando estourou a guerra entre rei e parlamento ele se manteve a favor do rei, e teve que se exilar na França em 1640. Um país onde todo aquele que quisesse defender o absolutismo era bem-vindo.
Hobbes encarou a questão da legitimidade do poder absoluto e da fundamentação da criação do estado em sua grande obra Leviatã, que publicou na França em 1651, dois anos depois da vitória de Cromwell, e quando seu governo ditatorial começava a se consolidar.
Por que deve existir o Estado e de onde vem o seu poder absoluto? Essa é a pergunta central da obra magna de Hobbes. Na França, havia a teoria do direito divino dos reis de governar, mas nosso filósofo era um homem racional demais para abraçar tal teoria. Hobbes inova no pensamento político da época ao defender que a organização social deve ser entendida e explicada não como uma teia de jogo de interesses entre classes sociais diferentes, mas do mesmo modo como a ciência explica o movimento dos corpos através de suas relações de causa e efeito, tendo como princípio básico o entendimento do movimento como um fenômeno natural. Filosofia, para ele, era física dos corpos.
A nova filosofia
Hobbes tinha um notável conhecimento de línguas clássicas. Entretanto, essas línguas serviram-lhe para se aproximar de poetas e historiadores e não para revisitar e meditar os filósofos antigos.
Tinha decidida aversão por Aristóteles e mais ainda pela filosofia escolástica (que então era interpretada de modo inteiramente inadequado).
Entretanto, ficou entusiasmado pelos Elementos de Euclides, com sua rigorosíssima construção dedutiva, que ele considerou modelo de método para o filosofar.
Também exerceram notável influência sobre Hobbes o racionalismo cartesiano, com suas instâncias derivadas da revolução cientifica, e Bacon, com sua concepção utilitarista do saber.
Mas talvez a influência mais poderosa tenha sido exercida por Galileu com sua física, tanto que, em várias partes da obra de Hobbes, fica evidente a intenção de ser o Galileu da filosofia, em especial o Galileu da ciência política. Entendida como estudo do movimento a física não remonta a antes de Galileu, diz expressamente Hobbes, ao passo que a filosofia civil não remonta a antes de sua própria obra Do cidadão (1642).
No De corpore, Hobbes expressa muito eficazmente a nova tempera espiritual e (como já haviam feito muitas páginas de Descartes e de Bacon) sanciona o fim de uma época do filosofar e o início de urna nova, que fecha as portas ao pensamento antigo e medieval, sem possibilidades de apelo por muito tempo.
Em particular, Hobbes destaca o seguinte:
a) o grande mérito de Galileu;
b) a necessidade de fundar urna nova ciência do Estado com base no modelo galileano;
c) a vacuidade e inconsistência da filosofia grega;
d) a perniciosidade da mistura operada pela filosofia veteromedieval cristã entre a Bíblia e a filosofia platônica e especialmente a aristotélica, que Hobbes considera uma traição da fé cristã;
e) a necessidade de expulsar o monstro metafísico e de distinguir a filosofia da religião e das Escrituras.

O que acontece no século XVII, época em que Hobbes viveu? O absolutismo, atingindo o apogeu, encontra -se em vias de ser ultrapassado, e enfrenta inúmeros movimentos de oposição baseados em ideias liberais.
Hobbes nasceu na era de ouro elisabetana, mas sua vida adulta foi marcada por esses conflitos entre reis e o parlamento. Ele era crítico da democracia e por conseguinte, da monarquia parlamentar inglesa.
Quando estourou a guerra entre rei e parlamento ele se manteve a favor do rei, e teve que se exilar na França em 1640. Um país onde todo aquele que quisesse defender o absolutismo era bem-vindo.
Hobbes encarou a questão da legitimidade do poder absoluto e da fundamentação da criação do estado em sua grande obra Leviatã, que publicou na França em 1651, dois anos depois da vitória de Cromwell, e quando seu governo ditatorial começava a se consolidar.
Por que deve existir o Estado e de onde vem o seu poder absoluto? Essa é a pergunta central da obra magna de Hobbes. Na França, havia a teoria do direito divino dos reis de governar, mas nosso filósofo era um homem racional demais para abraçar tal teoria. Hobbes inova no pensamento político da época ao defender que a organização social deve ser entendida e explicada não como uma teia de jogo de interesses entre classes sociais diferentes, mas do mesmo modo como a ciência explica o movimento dos corpos através de suas relações de causa e efeito, tendo como princípio básico o entendimento do movimento como um fenômeno natural. Filosofia, para ele, era física dos corpos.
A nova filosofia
Hobbes tinha um notável conhecimento de línguas clássicas. Entretanto, essas línguas serviram-lhe para se aproximar de poetas e historiadores e não para revisitar e meditar os filósofos antigos.
Tinha decidida aversão por Aristóteles e mais ainda pela filosofia escolástica (que então era interpretada de modo inteiramente inadequado).
Entretanto, ficou entusiasmado pelos Elementos de Euclides, com sua rigorosíssima construção dedutiva, que ele considerou modelo de método para o filosofar.
Também exerceram notável influência sobre Hobbes o racionalismo cartesiano, com suas instâncias derivadas da revolução cientifica, e Bacon, com sua concepção utilitarista do saber.
Mas talvez a influência mais poderosa tenha sido exercida por Galileu com sua física, tanto que, em várias partes da obra de Hobbes, fica evidente a intenção de ser o Galileu da filosofia, em especial o Galileu da ciência política. Entendida como estudo do movimento a física não remonta a antes de Galileu, diz expressamente Hobbes, ao passo que a filosofia civil não remonta a antes de sua própria obra Do cidadão (1642).
No De corpore, Hobbes expressa muito eficazmente a nova tempera espiritual e (como já haviam feito muitas páginas de Descartes e de Bacon) sanciona o fim de uma época do filosofar e o início de urna nova, que fecha as portas ao pensamento antigo e medieval, sem possibilidades de apelo por muito tempo.
Em particular, Hobbes destaca o seguinte:
a) o grande mérito de Galileu;
b) a necessidade de fundar urna nova ciência do Estado com base no modelo galileano;
c) a vacuidade e inconsistência da filosofia grega;
d) a perniciosidade da mistura operada pela filosofia veteromedieval cristã entre a Bíblia e a filosofia platônica e especialmente a aristotélica, que Hobbes considera uma traição da fé cristã;
e) a necessidade de expulsar o monstro metafísico e de distinguir a filosofia da religião e das Escrituras.

This is an introduction to the political views of Thomas Hobbes, which are often deemed paradoxical. On the one hand, Hobbes is a stern defender of political absolutism. The Hobbesian doctrine of sovereignty dictates complete monopoly of power within a given territory and over all institutions of civilian or ecclesiastical authority. On the other hand, Hobbes insists on the fundamental equality of human beings. He maintains that the state is a contract between individuals, that the sovereign owes his authority to the will of those he governs and is obliged to protect the interests of the governed by assuring civil peace and security. Thomas Hobbes published Leviathan (1651) in the midst of the English Civil War. Hobbes concluded that human beings could only live together if placed under the rule of an absolute sovereign.
This video is a parody of "What Does the Fox Say?" and was more directly inspired by MrBettsClass, who recorded "What Does John Locke Say?" a few months before we released this video.

Pinker: I might want to resuscitate Thomas Hobbes and have dinner with him, the 17th century English philosopher who's mostly -- and I think I'm unfairly -- associated with the idea that life in the state of nature is nasty, brutish, and short. Hobbes was a witty and brilliant writer. He was a kind of psychologist who had a physiological, mechanistic view of thinking and emotion. He said reasoning is but reckoning -- reckoning in the original sense of computation or calculation. He thought deeply about the problems of violence, and had an analysis of the causes of violence that I think are quite valid today. He put his finger on what might be the greatest violence reduction technique ever invented. That is a responsible government. And he . . . Wherever you turn, I think, in psychology and philosophy, you find areas in which he had some _______ or _______. So I would love to pick his brains if I could. I'd ask him how he would solve the problem of policing the police. He had this concept of the leviathan -- that is a government to which people would voluntarily surrender their autonomy in exchange for having to adjudicate disputes and basically keep us from each other's throats.
