Geylang

Geylang is an urban planning area and township located on the eastern fringe of the Central Region of Singapore. It is bordered by Hougang and Toa Payoh to the north, Marine Parade to the south, Bedok to the east and Kallang to the west.

Situated just outside Singapore's Central Business District, Geylang is well served by the country's transport network. Geylang Road and Sims Avenue are major roads that run through the area, connecting Geylang with Kallang and the city in the west, as well as Bedok and Changi in the east. Six Mass Rapid Transit stations serve the town, Aljunied, Dokota, Eunos, MacPherson, Mountbatten MRT Station and Paya Lebar.

Despite its town status, Geylang is infamously better known as being the red-light district of Singapore. With many brothels dotting Geylang Road and along various other lanes in the town. Asian prostitutes mostly from other countries like Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam and China work in Geylang, and visitors and locals alike flock to the area each evening and stay till morning. The town is home to hundreds of brothels. Some are regulated, while others operate behind the scenes illegally. The houses in Geylang operating in sex practices are easily identifiable, their house numbers are large and bright red.

Geylang Road

Geylang Road (Chinese: 芽笼路 ; Malay: Jalan Geylang) is a major trunk road linking Singapore's eastern suburban areas with the country's central business district. Deriving its name from the area of Geylang where the road cuts through, it is fronted on both sides by low-rise shophouses protected statutorily from urban redevelopment in keeping with its history and urban heritage.

The road itself begins at the east where it meets Changi Road at the junction with Geylang Serai and Joo Chiat Road and continues westward until Kallang Road over the Kallang River at Sir Arthur's Bridge. Previously it was the only main thoroughfare linking Changi and Kallang, the former being where the current international airport is situated. As traffic mushroomed, Geylang Road was converted into a one-way street, and a parallel road, Sims Avenue, was constructed to the north to cater for traffic in the opposite direction.

Orchard Towers

Orchard Towers (Chinese: 豪杰大厦) is an 18-story office building in Singapore located on the corner of Claymore Road and Orchard Road. Construction was completed in 1975. The first five floors are a combination of bars and retail outlets with the remainder leased as offices. During the day the building functions as a retail and office style building, but the building is best known as a landmark entertainment complex famously described as the "Four Floors of Whores" or simply the "Four Floors". In addition, one of the towers houses 58 freehold condominium residential units.

Orchard Tower houses the Embassy of Romania on the 8th floor, Honorary Consulate of Mauritius on the 9th floor and the Embassy of Cambodia on the 10th floor.

Overview

There are various bars and clubs catering for many tastes. Rather than acting as a group of conventional brothels, Orchard Towers serves as an establishment where clients are able to meet and pick up prostitutes. These prostitutes are mostly freelancers who are in Singapore on tourist visas and thus working illegally, and the complex is thus regularly raided by police. They are primarily from Vietnam, Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia, Russia, Ukraine and a few from mainland China and South America.

Singapore

Singapore (ⁱ/ˈsɪŋɡəpɔːr/), officially the Republic of Singapore, and often referred to as the Lion City, the Garden City, and the Red Dot, is a global city in Southeast Asia and the world's only island city-state. It lies one degree (137 km) north of the equator, at the southernmost tip of continental Asia and peninsular Malaysia, with Indonesia's Riau Islands to the south. Singapore's territory consists of the diamond-shaped main island and 62 islets. The islands were settled from the second century AD by a series of local empires. In 1819, Sir Stamford Raffles founded modern Singapore as a trading post of the East India Company; after the company collapsed, the islands were ceded to Britain and became part of its Straits Settlements in 1826. During World War II, Singapore was occupied by Japan. It gained independence from Britain in 1963, by uniting with other former British territories to form Malaysia, but was expelled two years later over ideological differences. After early years of turbulence, and despite lacking natural resources and a hinterland, the nation developed rapidly as an Asian tiger economy, based on external trade and its human capital.
