Buies Creek, North Carolina
Buies /ˈbuːiːs/ Creek is a census-designated place (CDP) located in the Neills Creek Township of Harnett County, North Carolina, United States and is the home of Campbell University. The population was 2,215 at the 2000 census. Buies Creek is a part of the Dunn Micropolitan Area, which is also a part of the greater Raleigh–Durham–Cary Combined Statistical Area (CSA) as defined by the United States Census Bureau.
History
The James Archibald Campbell House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977.
Incorporation
The tiny wooded hamlet of Buies Creek was incorporated by the North Carolina General Assembly in 1914. The town charter was repealed in 1967.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 2.3 square miles (6.0 km2), of which, 2.3 square miles (6.0 km2) of it is land and 89.27% is water.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 2,215 people, 612 households, and 211 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 974.0 people per square mile (376.7/km²). There were 698 housing units at an average density of 306.9 per square mile (118.7/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 84.20% White, 10.16% African American, 0.36% Native American, 2.71% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 1.31% from other races, and 1.22% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.08% of the population.

We knew this video was going to be controversial. Anytime race is discussed in any capacity, controversy ensues. The racial reconciliation concept was a joint effort between the Red House staff and us. They pointed out the fact that their employees and customer base were like the "Rainbow Coalition", and we thought something with a comical racial reconciliation theme would be fun, as well as a conversation starter.
For those of you who think this video is racist, we'd like you to distinguish between "racist" and "racial". Racism is "hatred or intolerance of another race or other races." Racial is "of, relating to, or based on a race". This video is very obviously racial as opposed to racist. This video doesn't promote or feature hatred or intolerance. Rather, it's the very opposite. This commercial promotes inclusion and reconciliation, if not in a comical way. To point out the obvious, the irony in this video is that it's completely ridiculous for people to relate furniture to their race. People of all colors are welcome at the Red House, which is something that is taken for granted today, but there was a time in the not-so-distant past during which things as simple as a water fountain were NOT for everyone.
If Saturday Night Live, Mad TV, or Dave Chappelle for that matter, were to address racial issues in a comical way (something that they all do VERY regularly), they would have pushed the envelope MUCH further.
Discussing race in the US is taboo. It always makes people feel uncomfortable. We think it's a shame that someone saying "I'm white" or "I'm black" creates such a stir. There are real cultural identities within different people groups, and these things should be celebrated and embraced, not swept under the rug.
This video is an attempt to use humor to spark a discussion about race issues, because we still have a long way to go.

In 1941 his father was arrested by the facists and imprisoned until the end of the war. Upon release in 1945, he resumed his work with Standard Oil. The family spent two very happy post-war years together.
However, while Peter's parents were in the United States on a business trip, Stalin's forces seized control of Romania as a vast Iron Curtain fell across Europe. Everyone knew that Peter's father was unable to return home because he would have been immediately arrested and executed. Around age 10 Peter, his older brother, and grandmother were put into hard labor. The boys lived with their grandmother and were required to perform the worst of near-slave-labor jobs by the communist government when they should have been attending school. During this time his grandfather was executed in a communist prison.
Peter was reunited with his parents in 1954 at the age of 15 after President Eisenhower arranged for the boys' freedom in return for some Russian spies held by the US. He arrived in this country and was greeted by his parents whom he hardly remembered.
He was accepted by the headmaster of Exeter academy despite having no knowledge of the English language and only a third-grade education. He mastered the language and academics necessary eventually to attend Princeton where he graduated cum laude. He subsequently earned an M.B.A. from Stanford.
Instead of following his father and entering the oil industry, Peter joined Young and Rubicam, a marketing and communications company, where he remained for 40-years retiring as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer.
He began coming to Chautauqua Institution in the year 2000 as he anticipated retirement. He and his wife purchased a Chautauqua cottage which they have decorated in red, white and blue.
His latest book CONSTANT CHOICE: An Everyday Journal from Evil Toward Good was published this year by Greenleaf Book Group Press.
Mr. Georgescu will be interviewed by "Chautauqua People" Producer, John Viehe, a member of the Chautauqua Institution Board of Trustees. Dr. Viehe teaches psychology at Campbell University in Buies Creek, NC during the academic year.

His latest book CONSTANT CHOICE: An Everyday Journal from Evil Toward Good was published this year by Greenleaf Book Group Press.
Mr. Georgescu will be interviewed by "Chautauqua People" Producer, John Viehe, a member of the Chautauqua Institution Board of Trustees. Dr. Viehe teaches psychology at Campbell University in Buies Creek, NC during the academic year.

Peter Georgescu was born in Bucharest where his family was in the upper levels of Romanian society. His father was employed by Standard Oil of New Jersey during World War II while the Romanian government was under control of Ion Antonescu, supported by the Iron Guard fascist movement.
Peter and his brother Costa were sent from Bucharest to live with their grandparents in the village of Lipova as their father joined the resistance movement. In 1941 his father was arrested by the facists and imprisoned until the end of the war. Upon release in 1945, he resumed his work with Standard Oil. The family spent two very happy post-war years together.
However, while Peter's parents were in the United States on a business trip, Stalin's forces seized control of Romania as a vast Iron Curtain fell across Europe. Everyone knew that Peter's father was unable to return home because he would have been immediately arrested and executed. Bahman (Faraz) Azad
Faraz Azad is an Iranian-American peace and justice activist living in the United States. He has a Master's degree in Economics and a Ph.D. in Sociology from American universities. He served in the Iranian Air Force as a 2nd Lieutenant between 1971 and 1973.
He is a former acting director of Center for Middle Eastern Studies at Rutgers University. He is currently a Professor of Economics and Sociology at Berkeley College in New Jersey.
Faraz has been active in the peace and justice movement since his arrival in the United States in 1973, first as a student activist against the previous regime in Iran and then as a member of the National Board of the U.S. Peace Council. He joined the Veterans For Peace in the early 1990s at the invitation of his close friend and then VFP President, Dave Cline. He is currently serving as the Chair of VFP's Iran Working Group, Organizational Secretary of the U.S. Peace Council, Co-Chair of Iran Pledge of Resistance, and an NGO representative of the World Peace Council at the United Nations. He is also the co-founder of the Campaign in Solidarity with the Iranian People's Green Movement, an international campaign in support of the Iranian people's democratic rights.
Michael Kramer
Veterans For Peace activist Michael Kramer was a member of the Israel Defense Forces and took part in the 1973 Arab-Israeli War. His personal experiences both as a settler and combatant led him to reassess his views on Zionism and the role of the U.S. in the Middle East. Kramer became a supporter of Palestinian self-determination and the Arab cause. He is currently a volunteer at the International Action Center in NYC where he has been coordinating a solidarity campaign with the Honduran people.
Michael T. McPhearson is a native of Fayetteville North Carolina and was a field artillery officer in the 24th Mechanized Infantry Division during Desert Shield /Desert Storm, also known as Gulf War I. In 1981 at the age of 17, Michael joined the Army Reserve as an enlisted soldier and attended basic training the summer between his junior and senior high school years. He is a ROTC graduate of Campbell University in Buies Creek, North Carolina with a B.S. degree in Sociology.
Michael is the National Coordinator for United For Peace and Justice and a current board member as well as a former Executive Director of Veterans For Peace. He is a member of Military Families Speak Out, works closely with the Newark based People's Organization for Progress and publishes the Mcphearsonreport.org expressing his views on war and peace, politics, human rights, race and other things.
