Australia (/ɒˈstreɪliə/, /ə-/, colloquially /-jə/), officially known as the Commonwealth of Australia, is an Oceanian country comprising the mainland of the Australian continent, the island of Tasmania, and numerous smaller islands. It is the world's sixth-largest country by total area. Neighbouring countries include Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and East Timor to the north; the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu to the north-east; and New Zealand to the south-east.
For about 50,000 years before the first British settlement in the late 18th century, Australia was inhabited by indigenous Australians, who spoke languages grouped into roughly 250 language groups. After the European discovery of the continent by Dutch explorers in 1606, Australia's eastern half was claimed by Great Britain in 1770 and initially settled through penal transportation to the colony of New South Wales from 26 January 1788. The population grew steadily in subsequent decades; the continent was explored and an additional five self-governing crown colonies were established. On 1 January 1901, the six colonies federated, forming the Commonwealth of Australia. Since federation, Australia has maintained a stable liberal democratic political system that functions as a federal parliamentary democracy and constitutional monarchy comprising six states and several territories. The population of 24 million is highly urbanised and heavily concentrated in the eastern states and on the coast.
Cat Island may refer to:
The following locations are named Cat Island:
The domestic cat (Felis catus or Felis silvestris catus) is a small, typically furry, domesticated, and carnivorous mammal. They are often called house cats when kept as indoor pets or simply cats when there is no need to distinguish them from other felids and felines. Cats are often valued by humans for companionship and for their ability to hunt vermin. There are more than 70 cat breeds; different associations proclaim different numbers according to their standards. The International Progressive Cat Breeders Alliance (IPCBA) recognizes 73 cat breeds while TICA (The International Cat Association) recognizes 58, CFA (The Cat Fanciers' Association) recognizes 44 and Federation International Feline (FIFE) recognizes 43.
Cats are similar in anatomy to the other felids, with a strong, flexible body, quick reflexes, sharp retractable claws, and teeth adapted to killing small prey. Cat senses fit a crepuscular and predatory ecological niche. Cats can hear sounds too faint or too high in frequency for human ears, such as those made by mice and other small animals. They can see in near darkness. Like most other mammals, cats have poorer color vision and a better sense of smell than humans. Cats, despite being solitary hunters, are a social species and cat communication includes the use of a variety of vocalizations (mewing, purring, trilling, hissing, growling, and grunting), as well as cat pheromones and types of cat-specific body language.
A feral cat is a domestic cat who has been born and raised without contact with humans, or a cat who has not had contact with humans for a significant period of time and has become unsocialized. It is distinguished from a stray cat, which is a homeless socialized cat who could potentially become comfortable living in a home again.
The meaning of the term feral cat varies between professions and countries, and is sometimes used interchangeably with other terms such as free-roaming, street, alley, or community cat. Some of these terms are also used to refer to stray cats, although stray and feral cats are generally considered to be different by rescuers, veterinarians, and researchers. Stray cats are socialized cats who no longer live in homes, but could potentially be successfully reintroduced to a home environment.
A 2013 article in the Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery found that rescuers and veterinarians in the United Kingdom tended to distinguish feral cats from domesticated cats based on traits such as their levels of socialization, ownership, and confinement, and on the amount of fear of, interaction with, and dependence upon humans. They found that rescuers and veterinarians tended to agree that feral cats were cats that had not had much human contact (particularly before eight weeks of age), would try to avoid humans, and would prefer to escape rather than attack a human. However, veterinarians and rescuers disagreed on whether a feral cat would tend to hiss and spit at or attack a human during an encounter, and disagreed on whether adult ferals could potentially be tamed. The article provided a composite definition of a feral cat as a cat that would choose not to interact with humans, could survive with or without human assistance, and would hide or defend itself when trapped rather than allowing itself to be handled.
The terms big cat and great cat, while not a biological classification, are used informally to distinguish the larger felid species from smaller ones. A narrower definition of it includes five members of the genus Panthera: the tiger, lion, jaguar, leopard, and snow leopard. Only members of this genus are able to roar. A more expansive definition additionally includes the cougar, clouded leopard and cheetah. Especially the clouded leopard is considered an evolutionary link between big and small cats.
Despite enormous differences in size, various species of cat are quite similar in both structure and behaviour, with the exception of the cheetah, which even more significantly stands out from the other big and small cats. All cats are carnivores and efficient apex predators. Their range includes the Americas, Africa, Asia, and Europe.
The ability to roar comes from an elongated and specially adapted larynx and hyoid apparatus. When air passes through the larynx on the way from the lungs, the cartilage walls of the larynx vibrate, producing sound. The lion's larynx is longest, giving it the most robust roar. Only members of the Panthera genus contain this elongated hyoid.

Our cattery has been established for over 11 years and is a favourite with many Adelaide cat owners. Its success is attributed to the safe and caring environment we provide for feline visitors and the peace of mind we provide to cat owners when they are away from home. Each one of our veterinary practices in Trinity Gardens, Burnside and Prospect have dedicated cat boarding facilities with extra capacity available during peak periods.

A short movie I made about the highly probable existence of big cats in Australia. I decided to make this because firstly, I am interested in cryptozoology and mysteries and things like that. It is a very interesting topic and quite a few people have a story to share.I have also seen a black panther twice and heard a very similar noise to the one I put at the end of the video which is of a female cougar in heat. Please comment - especially if you have seen something like this in Australia. *Also, by 'black panther' that includes melanistic leopards, jaguars and possibly cougars are there have been reports of black cougars in the US.* *I can't believe this has gotten over 10k views already!! Thanks guys :) * *over 200,000 people have viewed this! Seems more people are interested in this...

Chris Dickman is a Professor in Terrestrial Ecology at the School of Biological Sciences, Sydney University. He has studied interactions between native and introduced species in the arid regions of Australia for many years. In this video, Chris discusses the diet of feral cats in Australia. Feral cats live, hunt and reproduce in the wild. They have the body shape, acute senses and fine coordination perfectly suited for stalking and capturing prey. These traits have allowed feral cats to adapt to some of Australia's harshest conditions and invade almost all parts of the continent. Cats probably arrived in Australia as pets of European settlers and were later deliberately introduced in an attempt to control rabbits and rodents. Cats now occupy 99% of Australia, including many offshore isla...

The first recorded sighting of Caddy, as it is popularly known, was in 1897. Since then there have been 200 sightings of the creature, which reportedly has a horse-like head, needle thin teeth, a long scaly body and muscles that ripple when it swims. Dr Edward Bousfield, a former biologist has studied the mountain of reported sightings and speculates that the creature is a type of reptile left over from pre-historic times, feeding on fish, squid and sea birds, but without hard evidence the creature remains a mysterious unexplained m...

"Macavity" is performed by Brenda Braxton and Marlene Danielle; "Memory" is performed by Loni Ackerman ("Evita" in L.A. and on Broadway) and Lisa Mayer. Please identify other performers if you know who they are.
Recorded: Saturday, August 13, 2016 Warhola, nephew of the artist Andy Warhol (who dropped the “a” from his last name early in his career), recounts his family’s relationship with his famous uncle. Several times a year, he, his siblings, and his parents surprised Andy and his mother with a visit to their home in New York City. Warhol’s house, always crammed with all kinds of things, including 25 cats, was a giant playground for the children. But the author’s mother considered the place an untamed mess. To her “Gee, Andy, when you going to get rid of this stuff?” he countered, “Ohhh, no. This is art.” Additionally, Jame Warhola talks about his career as an illustrator of children's picture books, science fiction and young adult novel cover artist, and Mad Magazine illustrator.

In Australia we consider ourselves a nation of pet lovers and yet, studies show pet populations are actually in decline, could the reason be Australia is just not pet friendly enough? Dr Chris Brown, Australian Veterinarian, says, “Owning a pet brings happiness to people’s lives and bonds communities together, so why are we making it so hard for people? I believe pet ownership should be encouraged as they give us simple joys that can help us in so many ways”. So with the help of Mars Petcare Australia, Dr Chris Brown is taking the campaign to government, the Australian community and social media to #keepauspetfriendly. With pets considered part of the family in most Australian households and growing fear that we’re on the way to regulating them out of our lives, Dr Chris Brown will share ...
We are the city cats
We came along to see you, Tom
Hey, where are you
Come on
The other cats have told us
You're so beautiful and strong
Hey, where are you
Come on
We'd like to know
If this is really so
We didn't only come to say hallo
* We're the city cats
City cats, city cats, city cats
Don't try to hide
'Cause we can see by night
We're the city cats
City cats, city cats, city cats
Don't strike a light
'Cause we are dynamite
(We are dynamite)
(We are dynamite)
You're hiding in the darkness
Tom, you seem to be afraid
Hey, where are you
Come on
We'll hunt you down
We're starting now
Because it's getting late
Hey, where are you
Come on
If you're this man
This famous lover man
Tonight you'll have to prove it, if you can
* (Repeat)
We promise we will love you only
We'll share you love, you won't be lonely
Where are you Tom, we are exploding
