Brisbane shivers through coldest day in more than four years

15 reading now

Brisbane has experienced its coldest day since 2013, with the top temperature reaching just 16 degrees on Friday.

The last time it was so cold in Brisbane was on June 30 that year, with a top of 15.9 degrees. Earlier the same month, Brisbane dropped to a top of just 13.6 degrees.

However, there is much better news for the weekend, with the rain expected to clear and leave a mostly sunny weekend.

It was a grey and damp day on Friday, as a bank of winter morning storms swept across the south-east.

The "not overly common" weather event saw 44 millimetres dumped at Victoria Hill, near Warwick, in the 24 hours to 9am.

Meanwhile, Beechmont, on the Gold Coast hinterland, received more than 20 millimetres and Brisbane Airport recorded almost 13 millimetres.

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Harry Clark said after 9am the showers had been "pretty light", with most Brisbane suburbs receiving less than 10 millimetres of rain.

The South Burnett region received to heaviest falls after 9am, with Proston recording 15 millimetres in just over 5 hours.

The forecasters said the storms are not particularly unusual.

"It's not overly common but it's definitely not unheard of," he said.

"This stuff tends to happen all year round.

"It is outside our typical storm season but the drivers for these storms are different to the drivers of our summer storms."
