Craig Mathieson

Craig Mathieson is currently the film critic for the Sunday Age, and each week his reviews also appear in Sydney’s Sun-Herald newspaper. Prior to joining Fairfax Media, he was the film critic for Rolling Stone Australia and then The Bulletin.

Born and raised in rural Victoria, Mathieson began writing professionally about popular music at the age of 17. He worked as a magazine editor in his twenties and has subsequently written or co-written five books about music, and still writes extensively on the topic for The Age, Sydney Morning Herald and Rolling Stone Australia. Because one screen is not enough, Mathieson is also a television critic for The Age.

When not watching, listening, or writing, the 44-year-old is a married father of two living in Melbourne’s inner-west.

Genre/style/region of cinema I am most passionate about: 1950s American cinema

A film that changed me/my mind: Claire Denis’ Beau Travail, because the depth of feeling is remarkable, especially in a masculine milieu where physical presence blots emotional access. The feel for body, spaces, and the power ritual was revelatory. Also, the ending is transcendent.

MIFF 2015 film I’m most looking forward to: The Club from Pablo Larrain.

I’m looking forward to Critics Campus because: Writing about film flourishes with the exchange of ideas and this is an opportunity to cut across generations, experience and standing.

Cinema excites me because: It provides the most intimate of personal experiences and delivers an endless expanse of viewing.
