Artist-in-residence programs and other residency opportunities exist to invite artists, academicians, curators, and all manner of creative people for a time and space away from their usual environment and obligations. They provide a time of reflection, research, presentation and/or production. They also allow an individual to explore his/her practice within another community; meeting new people, using new materials, experiencing life in a new location. Art residencies emphasize the importance of meaningful and multi-layered cultural exchange and immersion into another culture.
Some residency programs are incorporated within larger institutions. Other organisations exist solely to support residential exchange programs. Residencies can be a part of museums, universities, galleries, studio spaces, theaters, artist-run spaces, municipalities, governmental offices, and even festivals. They can be seasonal, ongoing, or tied to a particular one-time event. They exist in urban spaces, rural villages, container ships and deep in nature. Hundreds of such opportunities and organisations exist throughout the world.
An artist is a person engaged in one or more of any of a broad spectrum of activities related to creating art, practicing the arts, and/or demonstrating an art. The common usage in both everyday speech and academic discourse is a practitioner in the visual arts only. The term is often used in the entertainment business, especially in a business context, for musicians and other performers (less often for actors). "Artiste" (the French for artist) is a variant used in English only in this context. Use of the term to describe writers, for example, is valid, but less common, and mostly restricted to contexts like criticism.
Wiktionary defines the noun 'artist' (Singular: artist; Plural: artists) as follows:
The Oxford English Dictionary defines the older broad meanings of the term "artist":
A Webby Award is an award for excellence on the Internet presented annually by The International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences, a judging body composed of over one thousand industry experts and technology innovators. Categories include websites, advertising & media, online film & video, mobile sites & apps, and social.
Two winners are selected in each category, one by members of The International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences, and one by the public who cast their votes during Webby People’s Voice voting. Each winner presents a five-word acceptance speech, a trademark of the annual awards show.
Hailed as the "Internet’s highest honor," the award is one of the older internet-oriented awards, and is associated with the phrase "The Oscars of the Internet."
The Webby Awards began in 1996, sponsored by the Academy of Web Design and Cool Site of the Day. The first Webby Awards were produced by Kay Dangaard at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel as a nod to the first site of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (Oscars). That first year, they were called "Webbie" Awards. The first "Site of the Year" winner was the pioneer webisodic serial The Spot.
Complex but logically composed, Jenny Trinks' works are inspired by architecture and urban spaces. The German artist has been exploring the art of glass fusing since 2007. Her initial studies were in painting and photography, until she discovered the translucent properties of glass. "Glass was a completely new material for me and now it is the most important material," she says. Trinks completed post-graduate studies at the Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design Halle in Germany. Her works have been exhibited and nominated for awards internationally, including the Czech Republic, United States, France, Germany, and Japan. During her May 2014 Residency, Trinks continued to explore the connection between paint and sculpture. "With paintings on glass, I collect and build up layers...

Milwaukee artist Robert Meincke's proposal for the 2015-2016 Pfister Artist in Residence. My proposal for the gallery space at the Pfister is to fill the gallery from wall to wall and ceiling to floor with painted panels. Each panel is the size of an open newspaper and can be mounted flush to one another, creating a larger unified piece. In the weeks leading up to the residency I will prepare around 60 panels; cut to dimension, sanded, primed, and ready to mount. This will streamline the process for me. Once the residency begins I would start each day by reading the morning paper, selecting a specific article and finding a subsequent image that relates. I would then mount the newspaper to the prepped panel and begin painting. I have become a master of this process , making it ex...
