Every race begins with the start. How you react and the direction you choose can determine if you're ahead or behind.
Why do it:
Working on starts consistently gives the athletes more confidence entering a race. A check list of a couple things to think about as they step up lessens any tentativeness about the process.
How to do it:
1) Grab your camera, or phone and film your swimmers.
2) Look for the first movement when you say GO!
3) Do the swimmers stand up first? Do they lift their head? Do the arms buckle and then help them leave?
4) Work with the swimmer to discover what extra movements they're instinctively putting into the take off... and take those movements out.
How to do it really well (the fine points):
Encourage experimentation... to the point where the athlete is trying something so new, they may make mistakes. This shows they're listening, and not going through the same movement with minor adjustments. Look for those movements that happen AFTER you say go, and before they really start to move themselves forward. Engage the hands in the process to initiate the first movement by pulling on the block, rather than just releasing. Show them the extranious movements they're putting in without knowing it, and have them work through the process.
Feedback is key, especially in the extra quick movements of a start.

This video was presented to the viewer as an online reference and a free example in order to provide a visual explanation of how to swim butterfly. If you just started learning this stroke, you might need some advice to make the process a little bit easier.
First of all, there are two kicks while swimming butterfly: the first kick occurs during the catch phase and the other one during the finish. Make sure to keep legs together and move both arms at the same time. Second kick is usually performed stronger in order to help arms fly above the water.
Second of all, keep in mind that butterfly is the hardest stroke in swimming and requires power along with good flexibility in shoulders. Work on your biceps, triceps, abs, and lower body (squads and jumps) as well as increasing flexibility.
Last but not least, come back to our swimming channel time to time and watch our butterfly swimming videos to improve your technique. Still have trouble learning it? Christine Jeffs
Christine Jeffs (born January 29, 1963) is a New Zealand-born director, editor and screenwriter known for directing the New Zealand film Rain (2001), the British motion picture Sylvia (2003), and the American independent film Sunshine Cleaning (2009). Jeffs is also renowned for her work on television commercials.
Jeffs lives in Auckland, NZ with her partner John Toon, who was the cinematographer on all of Jeffs' films.
Education and Career
Jeffs has directed a total of 4 films from 1993-2008, 2 of which she wrote herself. Jeffs began her career by working locally in post-production, most notably as an assistant film editor. Afterwards, Jeffs went on to attend the Australian Film, Television and Radio School, located in Sydney, Australia. Jeffs obtained a diploma in film editing in 1990, after which she held the position of assistant editor on three feature-length films: Ruby and Rata (1990), Crush (1992), and Absent Without Leave (1992).
Stroke (1993)
From her work as an assistant editor, Jeffs wrote, directed and edited her first short film Stroke in 1993, which unexpectedly gained attention from film festivals like Cannes and Sundance. Following her success with Stroke, Jeffs began to receive offers to direct commercials, and is now considered as one of New Zealand's most prominent commercial directors.

Every race begins with the start. How you react and the direction you choose can determine if you're ahead or behind. Why do it: Working on starts consistently gives the athletes more confidence entering a race. A check list of a couple things to think about as they step up lessens any tentativeness about the process. How to do it: 1) Grab your camera, or phone and film your swimmers. 2) Look for the first movement when you say GO! 3) Do the swimmers stand up first? Do they lift their head? Do the arms buckle and then help them leave? 4) Work with the swimmer to discover what extra movements they're instinctively putting into the take off... and take those movements out. Show them the extranious movements they're putting in without knowing it, and have them work through the process.
Feedback is key, especially in the extra quick movements of a start.

For years, state prosecutors have known that Kody Brown claimed to be married to three women as a member of a fundamentalist Mormon family.
In fact, one of Brown's sister wives, Christine, once worked with a Utah Attorney General's Office committee on polygamy to help shed light on the practice of plural marriage. For years, the Browns have lived in their Lehi home without the threat of prosecution.
But it wasn't until August, when the family — now with four wives — announced they were starring in a new TLC reality series, "Sister Wives," that police stepped in to investigate their family. Lehi police said Monday they were looking into whether the Browns could be charged with third-degree-felony bigamy charges.
"We are disappointed in the announcement of an investigation, but when we decided to do this show, we knew there would be risks," the Browns said in a statement issued Tuesday. "But for the sake of our family, and most importantly, our kids, we felt it was a risk worth taking."
Utah Attorney General's Office spokesman Paul Murphy said Lehi police had received complaints about the Browns after the reality TV show was announced. The office recently told Utah County prosecutors it's up to local police departments if they want to investigate the family.
Lehi police declined to comment Tuesday, referring only to Monday's media release. Deputy Utah County attorney Julia Thomas said authorities began investigating the Browns when they saw promotional trailers for "Sister Wives" airing on TV.
"It's generally known in the community there are polygamists in Utah County," she said. "The problem is we typically don't have them on TV admitting to breaking the law. We are being confronted with it in a very public manner."
The seven-episode, half-hour show, which airs Sundays at 11 p.m. pm TLC, follows Brown, his wives Meri, Janelle, Christine, the newly-wedded Robyn, and their 16 children through their daily lives in suburban Lehi.
Preliminary Nielsen ratings show that "Sister Wives" was the cable network's highest-rated original series premiere since the debut of "Cake Boss" in May 2009. It also was one of the five highest-rated premieres in the network's history.
The Utah Attorney General's Office for years has elected not to pursue charges against the Brown family. "It's been our policy — because of resources — that we would focus on the most serious crimes," said Murphy, who also works as a liaison between his office and fundamentalist Mormons in plural marriages. "In the past eight or nine years, we have been looking at crimes involving child abuse, incest, fraud and domestic violence."
According to a search of state court records, the Browns apparently have no prior criminal convictions or charges.
"The closest analogy to the Browns is Hugh Hefner," he added. "Here is a man who has three women. Do we want to spend state resources prosecuting these people and putting the kids in foster care?"
Lehi police didn't say when they expected to present their case to the Utah County Attorney's Office, nor did prosecutor Thomas know when charges might be screened by her office.
The family declined to make any further comments Tuesday, but in an earlier Tribune interview they stated the purpose of the show was to shed light on polygamist families of consenting adults.
"We really felt like this was such an important story," Janelle Brown said. "This was a story that hadn't been told, and we felt like there was so much benefit to showing our family."
