Mozambique (/moʊzæmˈbiːk/ or /mɔːzæmˈbiːk/), officially the Republic of Mozambique (Portuguese: Moçambique or República de Moçambique, pronounced: [ʁɛˈpublikɐ di musɐ̃ˈbiki]), is a country in Southeast Africa bordered by the Indian Ocean to the east, Tanzania to the north, Malawi and Zambia to the northwest, Zimbabwe to the west, and Swaziland and South Africa to the southwest. It is separated from Madagascar by the Mozambique Channel to the east. The capital and largest city is Maputo (known as "Lourenço Marques" before independence).
Between the 1st and 5th centuries AD, Bantu-speaking peoples migrated from farther north and west. Swahili, and later also Arab, commercial ports existed along the coasts until the arrival of Europeans. The area was explored by Vasco da Gama in 1498 and colonized by Portugal from 1505. After over four centuries of Portuguese rule, Mozambique gained independence in 1975, becoming the People's Republic of Mozambique shortly thereafter. After only two years of independence, the country descended into an intense and protracted civil war lasting from 1977 to 1992. In 1994, Mozambique held its first multiparty elections and has remained a relatively stable presidential republic.

In Mozambique's central Nhamapaza region, coaches, lorries and cars stand idle on the country's main highway, waiting for a military convoy to escort them safely north. This is the new normal in a country where clashes between the national army and Renamo, an armed insurgent group and elected opposition party, have intensified, reviving the spectre of a civil war that ended more than 20 years ago.

In the scope of UNEP's initiative "Clean Energy Mini-grids", EDP established a partnership to develop cost-effective, decentralized, clean energy applications in isolated off-grid communities. Following a screening process, an off-grid village was selected, Titimane, in Mozambique, given its more favorable enabling conditions: strong local partner SAN-JFS, biomass potential and more compact village. This project creates an opportunity to test a new business model (mini-utility based on fee-for-service) with innovative technologies (solar, storage, biomass, micro-grid, pre-payment) as a first step into a potentially large attractive and unserved market. This programme is a key contribution to the UN Secretary General’s Sustainable Energy for All (SE4All) Initiative and aims to introduce ...

The inSCALE project in Mozambique is part of a multi-country study that includes Uganda and is supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The project is working to increase coverage of integrated community case management (iCCM) through community health workers (CHWs) trained to adequately treat children under five years for diarrhoea, pneumonia and malaria. The goal of the project is to develop scalable innovations based on research which will have a positive impact on CHW motivation, performance and retention in order to increase the quality and coverage of iCCM. This will eventually lead to an increase in the number of children receiving appropriate treatment in their communities or being referred to health facilities. I like to spend some time in Mozambique
The sunny sky is aqua blue
And all the couples dancing cheek to cheek
It's very nice to stay a week or two
And fall in love just me and you.
There's a lot of pretty girls in Mozambique
And plenty time for good romance
And everybody likes to stop and speak
To give the special one you seek a chance
Or maybe say hello with just a glance.
Lying next to her by the ocean
Reaching out and touching her hand
Whispering your secret emotion
Magic in a magical land.
And when it's time for leaving Mozambique
To say goodbye to sand and sea
You turn around to take a final peek
And you see why it's so unique to be
Among the lovely people living free
