Damned or The Damned may refer to:
Dave Vanian (born David Lett, 12 October 1956) is a rock musician and lead singer of the punk rock band The Damned. Formed in 1976 in London, The Damned were the first British punk band to release a single, an album, have a record hit the UK charts, and tour the United States. With a fluid line-up since their founding, Vanian has been the only ever-present member.
Born in Hemel Hempstead, Vanian changed his name from Lett to Vanian in early life after a previous stint as a gravedigger – Vanian being a play on "Transylvanian". He remains one of the early influencers of gothic fashion, wearing dark and otherworldly clothing both on stage and off. He is known to be a fan of renaissance art, film noir and horror movies, all of which manifest in his stage appearance. In November 1976, the British music magazine NME stated that Vanian "resembles a runaway from the Addams Family".
In 1978, he was guest in the song "Don't Panic England", from the band Doctors of Madness. In 2004, he and Captain Sensible turned on the Christmas lights in Cambridge, causing some controversy.
Dave Vanian and the Phantom Chords (a.k.a. (the) Phantom Chords) were a 1990s British rock band, featuring The Damned's Dave Vanian on vocals. Playing rockabilly and gothic rock, sometimes referred to as gothabilly, they performed a mixture of covers and new material.
Following the 1989 breakup of The Damned, Vanian, guitarist Roman Jugg and bassist Bryn Merrick formed the Phantom Chords with Brendan Mooney (guitar) and Clyde Dempsey (drums). In 1990, the debut single by the band ("Johnny Remember Me", a cover of a Geoff Goddard song) was released on Polydor in Australia and M&G Records in the UK.
However, although an 11-track album (including "Johnny Remember Me") was written, and Polydor planned to release it, this did not happen, and only two one-sided acetates of it exist (although it has since become available through bootlegs). A promotional cassette was available for purchase at some of the venues when the band toured the United States later in 1993.
"New Rose" was the first single by British punk rock group The Damned, released on 22 October 1976 on [Stiff Records]]. It was the first single by a British punk group, and was released in the Netherlands, Germany and France in 1977.
Written by guitarist Brian James, "New Rose" was also included on the group's full-length debut album, Damned Damned Damned. The deadpan intro by singer Dave Vanian ("Is she really going out with him?") paid homage to the 1964 Shangri-Las song "Leader of the Pack".
The single's B-side was a cover of The Beatles' hit "Help!", performed about twice as fast as the original. Both songs became staples of The Damned's live shows, and appeared on various compilations.
"New Rose" was reissued in Stiff's Damned 4 Pack mail-order set. Original copies had a press-out centre, while re-issues had a solid centre. Copies from the four-pack had matrix details: "Bilbo tape" handwritten and "AY 50332" printed. A CD version was issued in the Stiff Singles 1976–1977 boxed set by Castle Music in 2003. "Help!" also appeared on Hits Greatest Stiffs.
Raymond Ian Burns (born 24 April 1954), known by the stage name Captain Sensible, is a singer, songwriter and guitarist.
Sensible co-founded the punk rock band The Damned, originally playing bass before switching to guitar. He embarked on a solo career during the 1980s, following a UK number one hit with his cover of "Happy Talk".
Sensible's signature headwear is a red beret.
Sensible was born in Balham, London, in 1954. He went to Stanley Technical School for Boys in South Norwood. The first musical instrument he played was a Bontempi organ.
Originally a member of the Johnny Moped band, Sensible joined The Damned in 1976 on the suggestion of his work colleague Rat Scabies, the band's drummer, filling a number of positions during his tenure (including bassist, lead guitarist and keyboardist), and eventually becoming the band's main songwriter following the departure of Brian James. He left in the 1980s to concentrate on solo projects, but rejoined in 1996 after Scabies left, and co-wrote Grave Disorder, the band's first new studio album for 8 years, in 2001. He continues to tour with the band and they released their latest album So, Who's Paranoid? on 17 November 2008.

Final encore from The Damned gig at Billboard with special guest, Dr El Suavo. The single was the second release from the band's Machine Gun Etiquette album, where it was listed as "Smash It Up (Part II)". The single was banned from BBC Radio 1's playlist because of its perceived anarchic lyrics, stalling at number 35 in the UK Singles Chart. It is widely considered to be a punk classic! The song's lyrics criticise hippie culture (referring to "blow wave hairstyles", "Glastonbury hippies") rather than advocate political revolution. It is of a two-part form: a melodic Quicksilver Messenger Service-like instrumental segues into an energetic pop-punk song. Chiswick reissued the single on their budget Big Beat imprint in February 1982. In November 2004, Ace Records issued the single on CD, ...

Great interview with Dave Vanian on Johnny Walker's Sounds of the Seventies
In 1976 New Rose was released by The Damned and in so doing became the first punk single to be released in the UK. 40 years later, Vic Galloway examines the importance of that moment in musical history; the song, it's production and the time that The Damned emerged from. Fresh from their anniversary concert at the Royal Albert Hall Vic asks if The Damned are now firmly part of the establishment. With contributions from Rat Scabies, Dave Vanian, Captain Sensible and Brian James.
THE BUZZING NOISE STOPS AFTER ABOUT 1 MINUTE, so don't let that turn you off. Takes the boys a while to hit their stride but we get great value out of their take on punk contemporaries and the guys who came to and went from the band. Steve Harris interpreted at this interview, which was held on April 16, 1986 at the Washington Hotel in Tokyo, Japan. We're now on Facebook: Look up the group "Musicians in Their Own Words"
The legendary group that is ,THE DAMNED performed at The Triffid in Brisbane. I was beyond stoked to see them and was fortunate enough to work my way right up the front and get some amazing footage. Please bare in mind that it was a LIVE SHOW,therefore there are some moments during the gig where my camera became part of the mosh-pit ! OH! And might I add that at around 16:32 during this video...Dave Vanian looks directly into the camera (heart melt). -ENJOY CHILDREN-
