The Wailuā River is a 20-mile-long (32 km)river on the island of Kauaʻi in the U.S. state of Hawaii. It is formed by the confluence of its North and South forks just west of Wailua and enters the Pacific Ocean at 22°2′42″N 159°20′11″W / 22.04500°N 159.33639°W / 22.04500; -159.33639 (Mouth of Wailua River)Coordinates: 22°2′42″N 159°20′11″W / 22.04500°N 159.33639°W / 22.04500; -159.33639 (Mouth of Wailua River). It is the only navigable river (by boats larger than kayaks) in the Hawaiian Islands. It is a center of activity for locals and visitors in the form of boat tours to Fern Grotto, kayaking and water skiing.
The North Fork begins near the Mount Waiʻaleʻale at coordinates 22°3′35″N 159°29′33″W / 22.05972°N 159.49250°W / 22.05972; -159.49250 (North Fork Wailua River) and flows 12.2 miles (19.6 km) east to its junction with the South Fork. The South Fork forms at the junction of several streams southwest of Hanamaulu and flows 8.1 miles (13.0 km) east, over Wailua Falls, to its junction with the North Fork.
Fern Grotto is a fern covered, lava rock grotto located on the Wailua River on the eastern side of Kauai in the Hawaiian archipelago. It forms a natural amphitheater which greatly increases the acoustics of the many bands that are hired to perform live music, which has traditional themes. Several boat companies give river tours which lead to the grotto. On April 24, 2006, the Grotto was closed by the Hawaii State Department of Land and Natural Resources for safety reasons. Heavy rains in March, 2006, caused a number of rocks and boulders to fall from the ceiling of the Grotto onto the viewing area below. It was re-opened in 2007 by the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources following artificial reinforcement of the rock walls and installation of ramps to access to the grotto. Prior to the 2006 flooding visitors were allowed to enter the grotto. Today the grotto may only be viewed from the designated observation deck.
Access to the Grotto is by boat on the Wailua River as part of the Wailua River State Park. Tour boats ply the waters of the park and the Grotto has long been a popular stop on the tour. Fern Grotto was nearly destroyed when the island of Kauai was hit by hurricane Iniki in 1992. Most of the ferns hanging from the grotto were torn from the rocks and, though much of the plant life has rebounded, the grotto has yet to recover much of the grandeur for which it was previously known. In spite of the damage, it remains one of the most popular and beautiful spots on the island.
A river is a natural flowing watercourse, usually freshwater, flowing towards an ocean, sea, lake or another river. In some cases a river flows into the ground and becomes dry at the end of its course without reaching another body of water. Small rivers can be referred to using names such as stream, creek, brook, rivulet, and rill. There are no official definitions for the generic term river as applied to geographic features, although in some countries or communities a stream is defined by its size. Many names for small rivers are specific to geographic location; examples are "run" in some parts of the United States, "burn" in Scotland and northeast England, and "beck" in northern England. Sometimes a river is defined as being larger than a creek, but not always: the language is vague.
Rivers are part of the hydrological cycle. Water generally collects in a river from precipitation through a drainage basin from surface runoff and other sources such as groundwater recharge, springs, and the release of stored water in natural ice and snowpacks (e.g. from glaciers). Potamology is the scientific study of rivers while limnology is the study of inland waters in general.
Kauaʻi or Kauai (/kə.ˈwaɪ.iː/; Hawaiian: [kɐwˈwɐʔi]) is geologically the oldest of the main Hawaiian Islands. With an area of 562.3 square miles (1,456.4 km2), it is the fourth largest of the main islands in the Hawaiian archipelago, and the 21st largest island in the United States. Known also as the "Garden Isle", Kauaʻi lies 105 miles (169 km) across the Kauaʻi Channel, northwest of Oʻahu. This island is the site of Waimea Canyon State Park.
The United States Census Bureau defines Kauaʻi as Census Tracts 401 through 409 of Kauaʻi County, Hawaiʻi, which is all of the county except for the islands of Kaʻula, Lehua, and Niʻihau. The 2010 United States Census population of the island was 67,091, with the largest town by population being Kapaʻa.
Hawaiian narrative indicates the name's origin in the legend of Hawaiʻiloa—the Polynesian navigator attributed with discovery of the Hawaiian Islands. The story relates how he named the island of Kauaʻi after a favorite son; a possible translation of Kauaʻi is "place around the neck", meaning how a father would carry a favorite child. Another possible translation is "food season".
Kaua'i: KAYAKING THE WAILUA RIVER + MUDDY HIKE TO SECRET FALLS (June 6, 2014) [10-minute video compilation] "Hawaiian Sling" was the name of our kayak. What they said was a moderate 2-mile round trip hike through the Wailua rainforest, original home of the first Hawaiians (who paddled from the Marquesas Islands to Kauai almost 1500 years ago) was a f*^€ing UP-TO-YOUR-KNEES IN MUD, mosquito-infested, MESS, with very hazardous mangrove roots. We were grateful to walk across streams, which I called "nature's washing machine". On the plus side, we learned about the flora and fauna of Kauai's most sacred area. We got up at 5:30 AM so we could check in by 7:45 AM to paddle 4 miles on the Wailua River, which is the only navigable river in Hawaii. This peaceful river winds through a tropical gar...

http://www.ncl.com/excursions/search?Ntt=NWK_02 Drive through Lihue Town and head north along the dramatic coastline to the Wailua River. At the marina, your guide will direct you to a flat-bottom motor launch for your journey up Hawaii's longest navigable river. At the head of the river, you'll disembark for a brief walk to the Fern Grotto, a hauntingly beautiful cave. Board your motorcoach and continue a bit further into the valley of the Sleeping Giant. From here, a short walk will bring you to Opaeka'a Falls. Note: The pathways at the Fern Grotto may be slippery. Fern Grotto may be substituted by the Pacific Paradise Gardens if not available. An additional optional shopping stop may be provided. https://www.ncl.com/cruise-destinations/hawaii-cruises
http://www.escapetokauai.com/ Come with us on a guided video journey to Secret Falls, found by kayaking two miles up Kauai's Wailua River and then hiking one and a half miles through dense jungle.
Beautiful kayak trip my wife and I took on the Wailua River in Kauai, including a hike to the spectacular Secret Falls. The hike includes lush forested areas, cascading smaller falls, and ends in a visit to Secret Falls. We hope you enjoy the video. Let us know if you have any questions or comments.
I'm not trying to cutout the outfitters but this trip is easy and less expensive if you do it on you own. Many of the rental companies offer full day rentals for ~$55 for a 2 person kayak. They will load your car and provide you a map to the falls. Wailua River is Hawaii's largest navigable river. The launch point is in the Wailua State Park. You will kayak about 2 miles upriver to the fork in the river. Take the right fork. A short distance ahead and through several tree tunnels take the left side of the island to the bank area where you pull your kayak to shore. It's easier to start the trail to the falls from the left side . The trail follows the river for 1 ½ miles. The elevation change is minimal. You reach a beautiful 120' waterfall with a large swimming pool area. PLEASE USE CAUTION...
Today we went out with the Wailua River Guides on a kayak excursion to the "Secret Falls". We enjoyed the leisurely paddle up the river to the trail head of our hike. The jungles that we went through were amazing. We did have to cross the stream so those that do not feel like a hike over slippery surfaces would be fun should think about doing another sort of activity. The falls were amazing, we got to swim underneath them in the pool and have lunch before we began our return trip. Honolulu, the capital of the Hawaiian Islands has developed into a lively city. In the heart of the city there’s a statue in honour of King Kamehama The Third who in 1840 moved his government residence from the island of Maui to Honolulu on Oahu, thus unifying the island kingdom. In later years the Victorian Iolani Palace became the new residence of those who ruled Hawaii. Hawaii wouldn’t be Hawaii if it were not for its world famous surfers when during the winter season the northern part of Oahu with its Waimea Bay, Banzai Pipeline and Sunset Beach is extremely popular with surfers. A total of a hundred and thirty two islands, atolls and reefs make up the island group of Hawaii. Not all of Kauai's gems are accessible by road, in fact, most of it's waterfalls can't be seen from drivable overlooks. The Wailua river-fed Secret Falls is no exception. In this video Nanea Marston discovers Secret Falls for herself. "The falls are about 30 minutes from Wailua's river mouth. You can rent kayaks at many spots near the mouth, or for a shortened trip, launch from the boat ramp right at the Kamokila Hawaiian Village." "From here it's another hour of hiking, so pack your hiking shoes and some bug spray, just in case." Our awesome guide bruddah Ryan from Duke's Kayak Adventures (best deal!) leads us on a fun kayak trip to hike, enjoy a rope swing and Uluwehi Falls aka Secret Falls (note: The guy behind Mel at the waterfall is hilarious just posing!) We cross the stream, check out some sleeping fern and have an amazing time. Awesome job on Mama Kim's first time kayaking, she did so good! Props! We passed two tour groups, we were so fast lol! (Not shown but I wanted to share: we learned about different Hawaiian plants and fruits. If every family had a breadfruit tree no one would ever starve. #Truth. Also learned about the noli fruit and it's natural super antioxidant healing powers). We also stop along after our trip to see Opaekaa Falls and Wailua Falls with a rainbow on our last day in Kauai! We'll see ...

Traveler Megan McCormick begins her journey in the island paradise of Hawaii on Kauai, the least explored of the islands. She is invited to a Hula ceremony and learns that dancing was how the natives expressed their history and culture in the days before the Hawaiian language evolved. The main staple of the Hawaiian diet is a vegetable called taro. Megan lends a hand with the harvest, and is invited to taste the fruit of her labors at a Luau the following evening. Meanwhile, she kayaks down the Wailua River into the rainforest and treks into the forest to an isolated spot where she takes a refreshing dip in a waterfall. From Kauai, Megan flies to Oahu, the most populated of the islands. At the tourist haven of Waikiki she heads for the beach and takes a surfing lesson, learning how to fe...
So long, boy you can take my place
I've got my papers, I've got my pay
So pack my bags and I'll be on my way
To Yellow River
Put my gun down, the war is won
Fill my glass high, the time has come
I'm going back to the place that I love
Yellow River
Yellow River
Yellow River is in my mind and in my eyes
Yellow River
Yellow River is in my blood, it's the place I love
Got no time for explanations
Got no time to lose
Tomorrow night you'll find me sleeping underneath the moon
At Yellow River
Cannon fire lingers in my mind
I'm so glad that I'm still alive
And I've been gone for such a long time
From Yellow River
I remember the nights were cool
I can still see the water pool
And I remember the girl that I knew
