The Balkan Peninsula and the Balkans is a peninsula and a cultural area in Southeast Europe with different and disputed borders. The region takes its name from the Balkan Mountains that stretch from the east of Serbia to the Black Sea at the east of Bulgaria.
The Balkans meet the Adriatic Sea on the northwest, Ionian Sea on the southwest, the Mediterranean and Aegean Sea on the south and southeast, and the Black Sea on the east and northeast. The highest point of the Balkans is Mount Musala 2,925 metres (9,596 ft) on the Rila mountain range in Bulgaria.
From Antiquity through the Middle Ages, the Balkan Mountains had been called by the local Thracian name Haemus. According to Greek mythology, the Thracian king Haemus was turned into a mountain by Zeus as a punishment and the mountain has remained with his name. A reverse name scheme has also been suggested. D. Dechev considers that Haemus (Αἷμος) is derived from a Thracian word *saimon, 'mountain ridge'. A third possibility is that "Haemus" (Αἵμος) derives from the Greek word "haema" (αἵμα) meaning 'blood'. The myth relates to a fight between Zeus and the monster/titan Typhon. Zeus injured Typhon with a thunder bolt and Typhon's blood fell on the mountains from which they got their name.
Al Jazeera (Arabic: الجزيرة al-ǧazīrah IPA: [æl dʒæˈziːrɐ], literally "The Peninsula", referring to the Arabian Peninsula), also known as JSC (Jazeera Satellite Channel), is a Doha-based state-funded broadcaster owned by the Al Jazeera Media Network, which is partly funded by the House of Thani, the ruling family of Qatar. Initially launched as an Arabic news and current affairs satellite TV channel, Al Jazeera has since expanded into a network with several outlets, including the Internet and specialty TV channels in multiple languages.
Al Jazeera is among the largest news organizations with 80 bureaus around the world. Al Jazeera is owned by the government of Qatar. While Al Jazeera officials have stated that they are editorially independent from the government of Qatar, this assertion has been disputed.
The original Al Jazeera channel's willingness to broadcast dissenting views, for example on call-in shows, created controversies in the Arab States of the Persian Gulf. The station gained worldwide attention following the outbreak of war in Afghanistan, when it was the only channel to cover the war live, from its office there.
Al Jazeera Balkans (AJB) is an international news television station headquartered in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina aimed at the media markets of the countries that used to be constituent units of SFR Yugoslavia. It is part of the Al Jazeera Media Network.
The station broadcasts in Bosnian-Croatian-Serbian six hours daily, with subtitled Al Jazeera English programmes being shown the remainder of the day. Al Jazeera Balkans is a sister channel of the Arabic language Al Jazeera and the English language channel Al Jazeera English.
The station broadcasts news analysis and features as well as documentaries, live debates, current affairs, business, technology, and sports highlights.
On 22 September 2010, after months of speculation, the Qatari government-owned Qatar Media Corporation (later renamed Al Jazeera Media Network) announced the US$1.56 million purchase of NTV 99, a local channel based in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Named Al Jazeera Balkans (AJB), the project was envisioned as "a leader in providing high quality news and current affairs in the region [of former Yugoslavia]" with planned offices throughout the Balkans and bureaus in key locations worldwide.

Watch more VICE documentaries here: http://bit.ly/VICE-Documentaries Turbofolk is tacky, high-octane techno with melodies based loosely on traditional Balkan folk music. Which would make it the same as popular music in pretty much any country in Europe if it wasn't also paid for by the Serbian and Croatian mafias (sometimes the Montenegrin) and served as the soundtrack to some of the most heinous war crimes since the Holocaust. It's a bit of a trippy scene. The Madonna of Turbofolk, Ceca Ražnatović, is currently under house arrest for embezzlement and hiding a cache of assault rifles in her basement. So we caught up with her protege, Goga Sekulic, a heavily...

Last night a D.J. saved my life
Last night a D.J. saved my life
yeah
'cause I was sittin' there bored to death
And in just one breath he said: You gotta get up
You gotta get off
you gotta get down
girl.
You know
you drive me crazy
baby
You've got me turning to another man.
Called you on the phone
no one's home -
Baby
why'd you leave me all alone?
And if it wasn't for the music I don't know what I do.
Last night a D.J. saved my life
Last night a D.J. saved my life from a broken heart.
Last night a D.J. saved my life
Last night a D.J. saved my life with a song.
You know I hopped into my car - didn't get very far
I know.
Before I had you on my mind - why be so unkind?
You've got your women all around
all around this town.
But I was trapped in love with you and I didn't know what to do
But then I turned on the radio
found out all I need to know.
- Check it out. -
Last night a D.T. saved my life
. . .
Last night a D.J. saved my life
. . .
listen up to your local D.J. - you better hear what he's got to sa
There's not a problem
That I can't fix
'cause I can do
On the double. And
you don't let it
Trouble your brain
'cause away goes trouble
Down the drain. Said
Away goes trouble down
The drain. - Well
