Nicholas Royle’s dazzlingly audacious new novel, An English Guide to Birdwatching, combines a page-turning story about literary theft, adultery and ambition with a poetic and moving investigation into our relationship to birds and the environment. With praise from Alison Moore (‘a daring novel, both wickedly playful and deeply touching’), Robert Macfarlane and Alex Preston, reviews across broadsheets and blogs, and a book tour with the ‘other’ Nicholas Royle, it’s off to a cracking start.

With his second graphic novel, prize-winning author Gareth Brookes once again twitches the curtains of the suburban south: A Thousand Coloured Castles, described by one reader as ‘Wallace and Gromit in the time of Brexit’, is a beautiful, observant depiction of a medical condition as well as a terrifying, if humorous, portrait of a marriage set in its ways.

Paula Knight’s extraordinarily powerful graphic memoir, The Facts of Life, is a clarion call to recognise that parenting isn’t the be-all and end-all of family. It is also, as Andy Oliver of Broken Frontier has said, ‘a gentle masterclass in all the storytelling tricks of which comics, and comics alone, are capable’.

FIRST DRAFTS 2017

Entry to our annual writing competition is now closed. We have had a record number of submissions this year. First Drafts is organised by Myriad to uncover exceptional new voices. There are very few competitions for a work in progress and this is a brilliant opportunity for aspiring authors to get their work noticed by publishers and agents. The winner will be announced at an event in London in November 2017.

COMING SOON…

In August, we launch S.V.Berlin’s The Favourite, an utterly immersive novel of estranged siblings, the untidiness of a sudden death and a grieving process that takes time to unfold. Bestselling author Elly Griffiths says she ‘hasn’t ever read a more assured or compelling debut.’

Later this year, we publish The Big Push: Exposing and Challenging Sustainable Patriarchy by leading US feminist Cynthia Enloe. Pulling back the curtain on patriarchy’s current workings, she reveals not only blatant sexism, but complicity and tokenism dressed up as modernization. As Helena Kennedy says, The Big Push is ‘a manual for taking us to the finishing line of gender equality. A jolt of new energy for longstanding feminists and a “must read” for our new generations’.
