White horses are born white and stay white throughout their lives. White horses may have brown, blue, or hazel eyes. "True white" horses, especially those that carry one of the dominant white (W) genes, are rare. Most horses that are commonly referred to as "white" are actually "gray" horses whose hair coats are completely white.
White horses have unpigmented skin and a white hair coat. Many white horses have dark eyes, though some have blue eyes. In contrast to gray horses which are born with pigmented skin they keep for life and pigmented hair that lightens to white with age, truly white horses are born with white hair and mostly pink, unpigmented skin. Some white horses are born with partial pigmentation in their skin and hair, which may or may not be retained as they mature, but when a white horse lightens, both skin and hair lose pigmentation. In contrast, grays retain skin pigment and only the hair becomes white.
White colorings, whether white markings, white patterns or dominant white are collectively known as depigmentation phenotypes, and are all caused by areas of skin that lack pigment cells (melanocytes). Depigmentation phenotypes have various genetic causes, and those that have been studied usually map to the EDNRB and KIT genes. However, much about the genetics behind various all-white depigmentation phenotypes are still unknown.

The Uffington White Horse is a highly stylised prehistoric hill figure, 110 m long (374 feet), formed from deep trenches filled with crushed white chalk. The figure is situated on the upper slopes of White Horse Hill in the English civil parish of Uffington (in the county of Oxfordshire, historically Berkshire), some 8 km (5 mi) south of the town of Faringdon and a similar distance west of the town of Wantage; or 2.5 km south of Uffington. The hill forms a part of the scarp of the Berkshire Downs and overlooks the Vale of White Horse to the north. Best views of the figure are obtained from the air, or from directly across the Vale, particularly around the villages of Great Coxwell, Longcot and Fernham. The site is owned and managed by the National Trust and is a Scheduled Ancient Monument. The Guardian stated in 2003 that "for more than 3,000 years, the Uffington White Horse has been jealously guarded as a masterpiece of minimalist art," and also inspired the creation of other white horse hill figures.
Whitehorse or White Horse may refer to:
White is an achromatic color, literally a "color without hue", that is a mixture of the frequencies of all the colors of the visible spectrum. It is one of the most common colors in nature, the color of sunlight, snow, milk, chalk, limestone and other common minerals. In many cultures white represents or signifies purity, innocence, and light, and is the symbolic opposite of black, or darkness. According to surveys in Europe and the United States, white is the color most often associated with perfection, the good, honesty, cleanliness, the beginning, the new, neutrality, and exactitude.
In ancient Egypt and ancient Rome, priestesses wore white as a symbol of purity, and Romans wore a white toga as a symbol of citizenship. In the Middle Ages and Renaissance a white unicorn symbolized chastity, and a white lamb sacrifice and purity; the widows of kings dressed in white rather than black as the color of mourning. It sometimes symbolizes royalty; it was the color of the French kings (black being the color of the queens) and of the monarchist movement after the French Revolution as well as of the movement called the White Russians (not to be confounded with Belarus, literally "White Russia") who fought the Bolsheviks during the Russian Civil War (1917-1922). Greek and Roman temples were faced with white marble, and beginning in the 18th century, with the advent of neoclassical architecture, white became the most common color of new churches, capitols and other government buildings, especially in the United States of America. It was also widely used in 20th century modern architecture as a symbol of modernity, simplicity and strength.
The horse (Equus ferus caballus) is one of two extant subspecies of Equus ferus. It is an odd-toed ungulate mammal belonging to the taxonomic family Equidae. The horse has evolved over the past 45 to 55 million years from a small multi-toed creature, Hyracotherium, into the large, single-toed animal of today. Humans began to domesticate horses around 4000 BC, and their domestication is believed to have been widespread by 3000 BC. Horses in the subspecies caballus are domesticated, although some domesticated populations live in the wild as feral horses. These feral populations are not true wild horses, as this term is used to describe horses that have never been domesticated, such as the endangered Przewalski's horse, a separate subspecies, and the only remaining true wild horse. There is an extensive, specialized vocabulary used to describe equine-related concepts, covering everything from anatomy to life stages, size, colors, markings, breeds, locomotion, and behavior.
Horses' anatomy enables them to make use of speed to escape predators and they have a well-developed sense of balance and a strong fight-or-flight response. Related to this need to flee from predators in the wild is an unusual trait: horses are able to sleep both standing up and lying down. Female horses, called mares, carry their young for approximately 11 months, and a young horse, called a foal, can stand and run shortly following birth. Most domesticated horses begin training under saddle or in harness between the ages of two and four. They reach full adult development by age five, and have an average lifespan of between 25 and 30 years.

Not content with the ground view of white horses from the Ridgeway trail, I decided to throw the quadcopter in the air to get a proper view of the Uffington and Hackpen. Stunning views from above on this perfect sunny evening. Made for gorgeous FPV flying.
The oldest chalk hill figure in the UK at around 3000 years old... dating back to the Bronze Age. There is some dispute as to whether this represents a horse or indeed a dragon. There is a "Dragon Hill" nearby which is reputed to be where St George slayed the dragon itself. For us to to still be able to see this now in 2015, means it must have been maintained by at least 120 generations of human beings... ensuring it didn't get overgrown by grass... and the chalk was recut/refilled. Amazing. :-) Aerial Photography: Martin McKinney Aerial Assistant: James Lawrence Edit & Post: Matt Lawrence

The Uffington White Horse is a 110 meter-long Bronze Age (~4,500 year old) figure incised into the chalk hillside near a hilltop. It is visible in its entirety only from a distance or from the air. Some say it is a dragon and not a horse. Although there are other hillside white horses in England, all but this one are relatively modern (1700s or later). To reach this site, it's about 2km from a parking lot, through sheep pastures. The view from the site is awesome, through the Vale of the White Horse. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uffington_White_Horse for further information.
We spent the weekend hiking & camping on The Ridgeway next to Uffington Castle, White Horse & Dragon Hill. The weather was perfect, only covered about 8 miles total but had a great time. (note: there was nothing but wind noise on the audio so I muted it, hence the silent soundtrack.)

Tony Robinson and other Time Team regulars present a radical picture of the British Iron Age, concentrating on the charismatic hill forts which litter our islands. This period was virtually ignored by our antiquarian forebears, who were more interested in the Roman conquest of Britain. We now realise that over 3000 years ago, the mysterious iron age peoples shaped the landscape that we know. Many of the tracks, boundaries and hill forts are still visible today. Modern archaeologists like Barry Cunliffe, Mike Parker Pearson and J.D. Hill have thrown new light on impressive structures such as Maiden Castle, Dorset and Danebury, Hampshire. They suggest the function of these places was social and religious rather than military. Other sites visited include Castell Henllys, Pembrokeshire; Yeaver...
So, finally went out for my first real solo overnigher and the first night using my new DD Frontline Hammock. It was brilliant. The weather couldn't have been better I don't think. The massive storm that was predicted passed by me but pasted villages to the east of my location. This is a very long video, I'll blame Zed Outdoors for that though LOL I've been watching too many of his full length movies :P Anyhow, I hope you enjoy it and can manage to get to the end of the video. There are a bunch of recipes online to make this, but basically it's just a 10:1 mix of Paraffin Wax (10 parts) to Bees Wax (1 part). It's extremely easy to do and by all accounts really improves the water proofing ability for canvas and other clothing. Also in this video are shouts to a couple of very fine folks... Today I met up with Ant from ManstuffTV (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCo54KPZixPbZcX9GPOrptpQ) for a bimble in Wyre Forest. It was a good day out, rained a bit on us but nothing too much. This is also a VR for Phil, Outdoorlip1 (https://www.youtube.com/user/lip03pd). The VR is actually at 10:33 Phil hit 400 subs (well he's over that now), and has asked for us to do a brew in the woods. So that's what we did. He's also informed us how much he hates the word bimble so we just had to say it as much as we could LOL Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/m1xzg/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/m1xzg Music: GREEN LEAVES by Jason Shaw http://freemusicarchive.org/music/Jason_Shaw/Audionautix_Acoustic/GREEN_LEAVES_____________2-15 Please remember to LIKE, SHARE and COMMENT. David Bedford's 1978 score The Song of the White Horse was commissioned for a BBC television documentary. The work charts a journey along an ancient Berkshire footpath between a stone-age burial mound and the famous White Horse of Uffington, celebrating King Alfred's victory over the Danes at the Battle of Englefield in the 9th century (using words by G.K. Chesterton). Set for small ensemble and a children's choir, it famously climaxes with the choir reaching stratospherically high notes by inhaling Helium gas.
Say you're sorry, that face of an angel
Comes out just when you need it to
As I paced back and forth all this time
Cause I honestly believed in you
Holding on, the days drag on
Stupid girl, I should have known
I should have known
I'm not a princess, this ain't a fairy tale
I'm not the one you'll sweep off her feet
Lead her up the stairwell
This ain't Hollywood, this is a small town
I was a dreamer before you went and let me down
Now it's too late for you and your white horse, to come around
Baby I was naive, got lost in your eyes
And never really had a chance
I had so many dreams about you and me
Happy endings, now I know
I'm not a princess, this ain't a fairy tale
I'm not the one you'll sweep off her feet
Lead her up the stairwell
This ain't Hollywood, this is a small town
I was a dreamer before you went and let me down
Now it's too late for you and your white horse, to come around
And there you are on your knees
Begging for forgiveness, begging for me
Just like I always wanted but I'm so sorry
Cause I'm not your princess, this ain't a fairytale
I'm gonna find someone someday who might actually treat me well
This is a big world, that was a small town
There in my rearview mirror disappearing now
And its too late for you and your white horse
Now its too late for you and your white horse, to catch me now
Oh, whoa, whoa, whoa
Try and catch me now
Oh, it's too late to catch me now
