Long-distance trails (or long-distance tracks, paths, footpaths or greenways) are the longer recreational trails mainly through rural areas, used for non-motorized recreational travelling (walking, backpacking, cycling, horse riding or cross-country skiing).
Any route named as a "trail" (or "way", in the UK) will probably be marked, or identified on a map, but it will usually only be described as "long-distance" if it takes the average user more than one day to travel from end to end. Typically, a "long-distance" trail, way or path will be at least 50 km (31 mi) long, but some in Britain are several hundred miles long, and many in the US are much longer.
In some countries, official "trails" will have the surface specially prepared to make the going easier.
In the UK long-distance paths are simply existing rights of way (over private land) "joined together" (perhaps with specially negotiated linking sections) to make a named route. Generally the surface is not especially prepared (which can come as a surprise to walkers from abroad, who find their distance-covering estimates need to be rethought to take rough ground into account) except in special places such as converted rail tracks, or some "busy" hilly areas where stone slabs are laid to prevent erosion.
Long distance or Long-distance may refer to:
New York is a state in the Northeastern United States and is the United States' 27th-most extensive, fourth-most populous, and seventh-most densely populated state. New York is bordered by New Jersey and Pennsylvania to the south and Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Vermont to the east. The state has a maritime border in the Atlantic Ocean with Rhode Island, east of Long Island, as well as an international border with the Canadian provinces of Quebec to the north and Ontario to the west and north. The state of New York, with an estimated 19.8 million residents in 2015, is often referred to as New York State to distinguish it from New York City, the state's most populous city and its economic hub.
With an estimated population of nearly 8.5 million in 2014, New York City is the most populous city in the United States and the premier gateway for legal immigration to the United States. The New York City Metropolitan Area is one of the most populous urban agglomerations in the world. New York City is a global city, exerting a significant impact upon commerce, finance, media, art, fashion, research, technology, education, and entertainment, its fast pace defining the term New York minute. The home of the United Nations Headquarters, New York City is an important center for international diplomacy and has been described as the cultural and financial capital of the world, as well as the world's most economically powerful city. New York City makes up over 40% of the population of New York State. Two-thirds of the state's population lives in the New York City Metropolitan Area, and nearly 40% live on Long Island. Both the state and New York City were named for the 17th century Duke of York, future King James II of England. The next four most populous cities in the state are Buffalo, Rochester, Yonkers, and Syracuse, while the state capital is Albany.
I Am may refer to:
Tommy Hartung is an animator and sculptor whose work employs homemade means and materials to create science fiction docudramas. Utilizing what the artist terms “dead cinema,” Hartung’s hand-crafted props and analog techniques are against the grain of current computer-generated animation spectacles. He was born in 1979 in Akron Ohio and grew up on a farm in Western New York. Currently Hartung lives and works in Queens New York. His work has been exhibited at the Hammer Museum, PS1 MoMa, Rotterdam Film Festival and Art:21 created several short documentaries on his life and work.
Exploring the didactic potential of the moving image, Hartung’s moving images analyze the creation and dissemination of cultural narratives through entertainment. Often taking the major themes of modernism as his subject matter, his work has addressed colonial expansion and exploration, evolution, conquest, and innovation. The montages of stop motion animation and found footage explore trauma, mortality, ethics and war. Drawing upon a diverse range of sources, including Chelsea Manning's court testimony, BBC documentaries, Anna Karenina, the Gnostic gospels, and the 1967 classic coming-of-age novel The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton, Hartung experiments with the history of film and video and the conventions of narrative, fragmenting and deconstructing his source material. He is currently represented by On Stellar Rays gallery.

Wainwright's Coast to Coast Walk is one of the most popular long distance trails in Britain, and one of the world's great walks. It is an exhilarating adventure, and once completed will be an achievement that will be in the memory for ever. But what is it like walking the 190 miles from St Bee on the Irish Sea to Robin Hood's Bay on the North Sea? It is certainly challenging even for the experienced walker. This video gives a walkers eye view through rain, wind and sun following A Coast to Coast Route Guide produced by Tony & Chris Grogan (Skyware Press 2014 http://www.skyware.co.uk/coastto.htm)
The Dales Way is one of Britain’s best loved, most written about, most beautiful long-distance walks. LONG TREK OVER by Sue Sprenkle KENYA – Chin jutted out and eyes slightly closed, Nduri Isandap bobs to the low, resonating music. The shrill acappella chorus quickly gains momentum and volume. Layer upon layer of beaded necklaces clank in perfect rhythm with each bouncing dance step the women take. In the center of the tight circle, Isandap feels the excitement of the music. She lets out a “yelp” and jumps straight up, stiff as a board yet beautiful and regal. A smile slowly spreads across her weathered face, though her eyes remain sad. It’s been a long time since Isandap had anything to smile about, let alone celebrate. It’s been a rough year. Her husband died a few months ago, leaving her and six children to fend for themselves during one of the worst droughts in Kenya’s history. Wit...
How does an artist find relief from the pressures of the studio? In this film artist Tommy Hartung leaves his Ridgewood, Queens studio and takes an extended run through the streets and woods of the surrounding neighborhoods. As he jogs, Hartung discusses how running is a necessary physical and mental break from the daily challenge of his intensive in-studio filmmaking practice. Hartung’s cramped space—filled with the architectural and figurative models that populate his experimental films—evidences long hours spent working in the studio. Running along the unpaved footpaths of Forest Park, Hartung draws a connection between the contemplative isolation of jogging and a childhood spent in the woods near his family’s farm in far Western New York. Hartung eventually completes a full loop, havi...
There is a select community of people that know a great deal about the trail, but the majority of people have very little knowledge of the trail or that it even exists. The Appalachian Trail truly is a National Treasure! What takes place on this journey will have an impact on you for the remainder of your life. The trail leaves an impression on your heart, the trail leaves an impression on your soul. The setting of the Appalachian Trail is a catalyst for genuine human interaction. A day like most: waking up, going to work, eating lunch, going home. Such mundanities offer a ritualised structure, ensuring protection from the dangers of thought or self-analysis. I don't love you any more. Why am I unable to tell you? Why do I keep up this charade? Why imprison myself when emancipation is just a few words away? The cycle continues. ------------------------------------------------------------ I made this film in two weeks, after buying a HD camcorder less than a month ago. OFFA'S DYKE PATH WALK SHOWN IN A SLIDESHOW OF PHOTOGRAPHS "The Solitary Rambler", which began in 1993, is my series of amateur video productions featuring my journeys in the countryside set to a musical soundtrack I have composed on the keyboards. For more details and information check out my website - http://solitaryrambler.co.uk "Mound of Mercia" Filmed in November 2005 using photographs taken in 1990 Running time: 47 minutes Whilst I was growing up in Chepstow in Monmouthshire I always had an ambition to one day walk the entire length of a long distance footpath, which started near to where I lived. In 1990 I finally fulfilled that ambition. 15 years after completing the walk I read a diary I wrote during the two weeks I walked along the whole stretch of this 176 mile waymarked ro...
Just a little pre-warning, there is a smidge of corse language in this one The Grande Randonnée (French), Grote Routepaden (Dutch), Grande Rota (Portuguese) or Gran Recorrido (Spanish) is a network of long-distance footpaths in Europe. Here in Mallorca we have 2, the GR221 or Ruta de Pedra en Sec and the GR222 Ruta Artà - Lluc (still in development), the former of which I have been threatening to do for years, it was only my impending new job with holiday restrictions that's finally got me off my butt and out there on my first long distance trail. Back on December 7 last year, me and a friend set off on our 5 day adventure along the GR221. The reason for choosing December to do the trail is easy... it's cool. I did the first section in mid October and suffered from the heat even that lat...
This video is taken from an 8mm cine film shot in July 1968. The quality was not brilliant but YouTube editing has improved it considerably. I have used the stabilisation tool to remove camera shake and added colour enhancement. The film itself is a record of a walk along the River Gipping in Suffolk from Ipswich to Stowmarket. The walk took place before the long distance footpath was established and it is clear that the photographer had to make his way through some very heavy undergrowth. To see some more recent pictures and the restoration work being undertaken by the River Gipping Trust, have a look at our website - http://www.rivergippingtrust.org.uk/
The West Highland Way (WHW) completed and opened on 6th October 1980 by Lord Mansfield, stretches for 96 miles (154.5 kilometres) from Milngavie on the outskirts of Glasgow to Gordon Square in Fort William. It is by far the most popular, and best – long distance footpath in Scotland, United Kingdom. It offers tremendous variety, beginning in the pastoral landscapes beneath the Campsies, past the serene beauty of Loch Lomond, and on into increasingly rugged and majestic Highlands. It then crosses the vast, awe-inspiring expanse of Rannoch Moor, with a glimpse down Glencoe, before crossing the hills to lovely Loch Leven. The route finally reaches Fort William via the beautiful Glen Nevis. The WHW uses many ancient roads, including drovers’ roads, military roads and old coach roads, and is t...
Roman roads (Latin: viae; singular: via) were physical infrastructure vital to the maintenance and development of the Roman state, and were built from about 500 BC through the expansion and consolidation of the Roman Republic and the Roman Empire. They provided efficient means for the overland movement of armies, officials, and civilians, and the inland carriage of official communications and trade goods. Roman roads were of several kinds, ranging from small local roads to broad, long-distance highways built to connect cities, major towns and military bases. These major roads were often stone-paved and metaled, cambered for drainage, and were flanked by footpaths, bridleways and drainage ditches. They were laid along accurately surveyed courses, and some were cut through hills, or conducte...
Alone with the phone again
The deepening light seeps in my mind
I'm desperate to hear a voice
Can this really be my choice?
I'm fifty and I'm tricky
And I'm sick of being alone
You're twenty-five and pretty
But you're old enough to know
That actions form a pattern
And the heart's the last to know
And I'm waitin' for another friend
Callin' long distance again
My mind is an antique room
There's overstuffed chairs and carpets too
Where nobody ever comes
It's a good place to run away from
And I'm runnin' from a love
With every step I take
And if I can fall for you then
From the last one I am saved
And it's a cold grey wet December
Shity shity day
And I'm waitin' for another friend
Calling long distance again
You're dark and your French voice is lovely
And you're bright eyes light the receiver across the miles
I'm listening close and I'm hoping
To learn love, but I don't know how
Calling long distance again
Calling long distance again
I'm calling long distance again
