A drainage divide, water divide, divide, ridgeline, watershed, water parting, or (in Canada) height of land, is the line that separates neighbouring drainage basins. In hilly country, the divide lies along topographical ridges, and may be in the form of a single range of hills or mountains, known as a dividing range. In flat country—especially where the ground is marshy—the divide may be harder to discern.
A valley floor divide is a low drainage divide that runs across a valley, sometimes created by deposition or stream capture.
Since ridgelines are easy to see and agree about, drainage divides are often natural borders defining political boundaries, as with the 18th century North America Royal Proclamation of 1763 that preceded the American Revolution.
Drainage divides can be grouped in three types:
A valley-floor divide occurs on the bottom of a valley and arises as a result of subsequent depositions, such as scree, in a valley through which a river originally flowed continuously.
The Great Dividing Range, or the Eastern Highlands, is Australia's most substantial mountain range and the third longest land-based range in the world. The range stretches more than 3,500 kilometres (2,175 mi) from Dauan Island off the northeastern tip of Queensland, running the entire length of the eastern coastline through New South Wales, then into Victoria and turning west, before finally fading into the central plain at the Grampians in western Victoria. The width of the range varies from about 160 km (100 mi) to over 300 km (190 mi).
The sharp rise between the coastal lowlands and the eastern uplands has affected Australia's climate, mainly due to orographic precipitation, and these areas of highest relief have revealed an impressive gorge country.
The Dividing Range does not consist of a single mountain range. It consists of a complex of mountain ranges, plateaus, upland areas and escarpments with an ancient and complex geological history. The physiographic division name for the landmass is called the East Australian Cordillera. In some places the terrain is relatively flat, consisting of very low hills. Typically the highlands range from 300 m to 1,600 m in height.
Range may refer to:
A national park is a park in use for conservation purposes. Often it is a reserve of natural, semi-natural, or developed land that a sovereign state declares or owns. Although individual nations designate their own national parks differently, there is a common idea: the conservation of 'wild nature' for posterity and as a symbol of national pride. An international organization, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and its World Commission on Protected Areas, has defined "National Park" as its Category II type of protected areas.
While this type of national park had been proposed previously, the United States established the first "public park or pleasuring-ground for the benefit and enjoyment of the people", Yellowstone National Park, in 1872. Although Yellowstone was not officially termed a "national park" in its establishing law, it was always termed such in practice and is widely held to be the first and oldest national park in the world. The first area to use "national park" in its creation legislation was the US's Mackinac Island, in 1875. Australia's Royal National Park, established in 1879, was the world's third official national park. In 1895 ownership of Mackinac Island was transferred to the State of Michigan as a state park and national park status was consequently lost. As a result, Australia's Royal National Park is by some considerations the second oldest national park now in existence.
The Continental Divide of the Americas (also known as the Continental Gulf of Division, the Great Divide, or merely the Continental Divide) is the principal, and largely mountainous, hydrological divide of the Americas. The Continental Divide extends from the Bering Strait to the Strait of Magellan, and separates the watersheds that drain into the Pacific Ocean from (1) those river systems that drain into the Atlantic Ocean (including those that drain into the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea), and (2) along the northernmost reaches of the Divide, those river systems that drain into the Arctic Ocean.
Though there are many other hydrological divides in the Americas, the Great Divide is by far the most prominent of these because it tends to follow a line of high peaks along the main ranges of the Rocky Mountains and Andes, at a generally much higher elevation than the other hydrological divisions.
The Continental Divide of the Americas begins at Cape Prince of Wales, Alaska, the westernmost point on the mainland of the Americas. The Divide crosses northern Alaska into the Yukon, then zig-zags south into British Columbia via the Cassiar Mountains and Omineca Mountains and northern Nechako Plateau to Summit Lake, north of the city of Prince George and just south of the community of McLeod Lake. From there the Divide traverses the McGregor Plateau to the spine of the Rockies, following the crest of the Canadian Rockies southeast to the 120th meridian west, from there forming the boundary between southern British Columbia and southern Alberta.

Flying among the beautiful untouched Australian bush. The 'Great Dividing Range' is a long stretch of mountains and hills stretching across the east coast of the Australian continent.
Once again Tim Flannery and John Doyle are off on a long journey through Australia, this time following the Great Dividing Range from Victoria up through New South Wales and Queensland, finishing in the Torres Strait. Their journey will encompass many stories about the range; from the geological formation, the fossils that lie witness to a deep past, the human interaction with the range and the environmental changes along the way. Tim and John will also be talking to people along the range about issues that matter to them. These issues will range from the serious to the light-hearted, from local to national, including the wealth divide, environmental destruction, sporting rivalries and Aussie legends.

Rokk Mann is an animated VFX short film. He is the metaphorical figure of all life. He is born, he learns, he grows and progresses, and, like all living, must return to where he came from. The backdrop to Rokk Mann's struggle for life is the ancient and rugged landscape of South East Queensland's Main Range National Park, or commonly known as 'The Great Dividing Range'. It was filmed on top of Mt Maroon.

Morning (so early) before the wedding my good friend Josh and I were on a plane to Sydney watching the sun rise over the great dividing range filled with low lying fog, as I proclaimed 'there is whipped cream in the mountains!' Carisse & Ben picked us up from the airport and we spent the day with them sharing stories as they made some final preparations. We were ridiculously well looked after, staying with their family and friends over the days we were there. The wedding day began with a slow journey out to the venue, documenting as we went. This is where you watch the video to see the story of the day :) C+B thank you so much for having Josh and I shoot your wedding. So grateful to have gotten to know you, your friends and family over the few days we spent in Sydney. More stories at //...
Driving home from the country on the Hume Highway M31 late afternoon on 11Jun2012. With Eril driving I get to look at the scenery (usually I'm busy focusing on the road) so I took a few random clips of the views passing at 110kmph. It was a 400Km drive and the time passed quickly... I've travelled this highway to/from NorthEast Victoria for 50+ years. Now we travel in high speed comfort and can do the trip in 4 hours, but I remember that the same trip started before sunrise and took all day when my parents travelled with the kids in the back seat of the old Holden station wagon! The Hume highway traverses the foothills of the Australian Great Dividing Range and the Victorian mountain peaks are just visible if you know where to look. Some even have snow at this time of the year and many car...

In 2011, TV3 produced two very special interviews featuring the scientist and broadcaster Eduard Punset and the presenter and humourist Andreu Buenafuente. The programmes, which generated considerable expectation and required a significant investment, consisted of conversations between Punset and Buenafuente about a range of issues concerning everyday life set against a video mapping projection of almost 100 m2. Tigrelab was chosen to develop the contents of the backdrop, an audiovisual "wall" 24 metres wide and 3.5 metres high. This reactive and continuously changing scene allowed the two men to continue to talk comfortably whilst they were taken from place to place...from a modernist library, to a New York building, to being surrounded by a futurist mesh created using images of codes. ...

While I was working in the Bathurst area for a couple of weeks I had the chance to have a detect around some old churches. This area was just great as it is the oldest settled area west of the Great Dividing Range. I found my oldest sixpence and shilling while there. Will be back to try for some gold as it was just too wet and cold this time.
V/LINE VIDEO Climbing the Summit. This is Heathcote Junction, the highest point of the Railway line between Melbourne and Albury. Here the line reaches a height of 349 metres to cross the Great Dividing Range. Trains travelling in both directions face a gradient of one in 50, testing the skills of train crews. The line opened in 1872 with the station opening in 1885 as Summit, the name later being changed to Heathcote Junction. Although no longer a junction, (the branch line to Bendigo that left from here was closed in 1968) the name has been retained. In 1962 the standard gauge line between Melbourne and Albury opened and dramatically changed rail operations between Melbourne and Sydney. Tuesday the 20th of March, 1990 - a typical day for rail operations crossing the Great Divide. In the...
