Live like a prime minister in 'original Chequers' stately home that once belonged to William Pitt the Younger... on sale for £12m
Not many houses can boast of being owned by a former prime minister, hosting Sir Winston Churchill for regular lunches and having had Margaret Thatcher as a close neighbour.
But Holwood House, a sprawling mansion just east of the village of Keston, Kent which is dubbed 'the original Chequers', also has the price tag to match its illustrious history.
The 25,000-square foot house has been put up for sale for £12million, further evidence of the booming property market in the South.
The huge sum is a far cry from the house's celebrated links to the abolition of the slave trade.
Its former owner, William Pitt the Younger, who became the youngest Prime Minister in 1783 at the age of just 24, paid just £8,950 for the house in 1785 despite his 'consistently unsteady finances.'
The story goes that Mr Pitt and his friend and fellow politician, William Wilberforce, sat together under a large oak tree in the grounds and discussed the abolition of slavery.

British Prime Minister David Cameron received Chinese President Xi Jinping at Chequers on Thursday, the third day of Xi's state visit to the United Kingdom.
Cameron welcomed Xi to his official country residence and the two leaders strolled in the garden surrounding the house before returning for more than four hours of talks with other officials.
Both Xi and Cameron hailed a "golden era" in China-UK relations and vowed to enhance exchanges and cooperation, especially in innovation, anti-corruption and the building of the rule of law.
Later in the day, the two leaders headed to a local pub called The Plough at Cadsen for a traditional fish and chip supper. They also drank pints of ale and chatted with locals.
The visit to Chequers by Xi and his wife Peng Liyuan ended with a home banquet at Cameron's residence.
At around 22:00, Xi and his wife left London for Manchester by airplane.

Chequers
Chequers, or Chequers Court, is the country house retreat of the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. The residence is located near Ellesborough, to the south of Aylesbury in Buckinghamshire, England, at the foot of the Chiltern Hills. Coombe Hill, once part of the estate, can be seen just behind. It has been the private retreat of the Prime Minister since 1921.
Origin of the name Chequers
The original house probably gained its name in the 12th century because it may have been built or inhabited by an individual named Elias Ostiarius (or de Scaccario), who was acquiring land in the Ellesborough area at the time. The name "Ostiarius" meant an usher of the Court of the Exchequer. Elias Ostiarius' coat of arms included the chequer board of the Exchequer, so it is likely he named his estate after his arms and position at court. The house passed through generations of the De Scaccario family (spelt in many different forms) until it seems to have passed into the D'Awtrey family, whose name was eventually anglicised to Hawtrey.
