Barbury Castle is an Iron Age hill fort situated in Wiltshire, England. It is one of several such forts found along the ancient Ridgeway route. The site, which lies within the Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, has been managed as a country park by Swindon Borough Council since 1971. It is situated on Barbury Hill, a local vantage point, which, under ideal weather conditions, commands a view across to the Cotswolds and the River Severn. It has two deep defensive ditches and ramparts. The Old Ridgeway runs close by and the modern Ridgeway crosses through the castle. In the surrounding area are to be found round barrows, Celtic field systems and 18th-19th Century flint workings.
The site was first occupied some 2500 years ago, and was then in use during the Roman occupation of the area. Archaeological investigations at Barbury have shown evidence of a number of buildings, indicating a village or military garrison at this time.
In the 6th century the site became part of the Saxon kingdom of Wessex, following the defeat of the Romano-British at the Battle of Beranburgh, Beran Byrig or Beranbyrig in AD 556, the site of which is just north of the castle. Centuries later the area was a favourite haunt of the 19th century writer Richard Jefferies, who lived an hour’s walk away at Coate.
A castle (from Latin: castellum) is a type of fortified structure built in Europe and the Middle East during the Middle Ages by nobility. Scholars debate the scope of the word castle, but usually consider it to be the private fortified residence of a lord or noble. This is distinct from a palace, which is not fortified; from a fortress, which was not always a residence for nobility; and from a fortified settlement, which was a public defence – though there are many similarities among these types of construction. Usage of the term has varied over time and has been applied to structures as diverse as hill forts and country houses. Over the approximately 900 years that castles were built, they took on a great many forms with many different features, although some, such as curtain walls and arrowslits, were commonplace.
A European innovation, castles originated in the 9th and 10th centuries, after the fall of the Carolingian Empire resulted in its territory being divided among individual lords and princes. These nobles built castles to control the area immediately surrounding them, and were both offensive and defensive structures; they provided a base from which raids could be launched as well as protection from enemies. Although their military origins are often emphasised in castle studies, the structures also served as centres of administration and symbols of power. Urban castles were used to control the local populace and important travel routes, and rural castles were often situated near features that were integral to life in the community, such as mills and fertile land.

First time at the beautiful Barbury Castle and it definitely lived up to expectations! I had Zara in the Pony Open Novice which was a special class for the GB longlisted riders for Pony Europeans 2014. Zara behaved and performed impeccably - producing a lovely dressage test in front of the panel of selectors, followed by a class Double Clear (her 5th this season) to finish 6th out of 13 combinations but 4th best rider out of 11 (some riders had multiple rides) could not be more proud of her or asked anymore, WHAT an incredible pony. I can't wait to head back to Barbury next year with the horses.

Flight duration on part 1 and 2 approx 50 mins in air, amazing value for money as i only paid £60 ish for this, via Travelzoo. Flight included passing over or near Silbury Hill, Cherhill Monument, Calne, toward RAF Lyneham, then on to Wootton Bassett, down the M4 from J14 to J15, quick tour over Old Town and Croft Road Swindon, out over Wroughton / Plough Hill, over Barbury Castle, onto Marlborough (ish) before landing again.
Is it done by man as a joke? Then why have people had extraordinary experiences related to them? For example flying balls of light were reported as being seen in and around some crop circles. Is it an alien intelligence which tries to communicate with us? The geometry which can be found in crop circles includes complicated mathematics which can be also found in nature. Our new documentary "New Swirled Order" deals with these questions and presents some very extraordinary crop circle formations found in 2008, like the "Pi"-formation in Barbury Castle or the Crop Circle near Avebury Manor which showed our solar system with the planetary constellation of December 21 of 2012.
