British National, commonly known as BN(O), is one of the major classes of British nationality under British nationality law. Holders of this nationality are British nationals and Commonwealth citizens, but not British citizens. The nationality itself does not grant right of abode anywhere in the world, including United Kingdom or Hong Kong, but all BN(O)s are permanent residents of Hong Kong. BN(O)s are subject to British immigration controls and do not have the automatic right to live or work in the United Kingdom.
The British National status was created by the Hong Kong Act 1985 in anticipation of transfer of sovereignty of Hong Kong on 1 July 1997. This nationality was "tailor-made" for Hong Kong residents with British Dependent Territories Citizen status by virtue of their connection with Hong Kong: it allowed the people of Hong Kong to retain a relationship with the United Kingdom after the transfer of sovereignty of Hong Kong to the People's Republic of China. BN(O)s enjoy consular protection as British nationals would when travelling outside Hong Kong. However, since most BN(O)s also holds Chinese nationality, they do not enjoy consular protection in Mainland China and Macau, owing to the Master nationality rule. From 1 July 1987 to 30 June 1997, nearly 3.4 million of British Dependent Territories Citizens in Hong Kong successfully registered for British National. All BDTCs in Hong Kong lost their BDTC status on 1 July 1997, and any BDTC who did not register as a BN(O) automatically acquired Chinese nationality or British Overseas Citizenship, depending on their ethnicity.

A: British Overseas Nationals are not required to have a visa when visiting Canada. They do need to hold a British National (Overseas) passport issued in the UK to persons who were born, naturalized or registered in Hong Kong.

Burundi has launched a drive to register all foreigners, sparking fears among overseas nationals that the scheme could be a pretext for government surveillance. All non-Burundians in the crisis-hit country will be required to report to border police offices in the coming two months. Public Security Minister Alain-Guillaume Bunyoni insisted last month that the move was aimed at granting foreigners a bio-metric ID card. Foreign nationals -- who also include people from West Africa including Congolese, as well as Indians -- will be required to attend police stations in person and carry their travel documents.

The Chinese government Thursday helped evacuate 225 nationals of 10 countries from the conflict-ridden Yemen, following its own evacuation of 571 Chinese nationals.
Linyi missile frigate departed Port of Aden in Yemen for Djibouti at 10:25 on Thursday, local time.
The people on board were from Pakistan, Ethiopia, Singapore, Italy, Germany, Poland, Ireland, Britain, Canada and Yemem. The evacuation process took place based on the requests made by these countries and is humanitarian aid in nature, Chinese Foreign Ministry said in a press release.
"Past two nights, there's some bombing in the areas, so that's why we are afraid and we traveled to Aden, so we will go back to Pakistan," said a Pakistani evacuee.
Chinese navy in the missile frigate prepared resting places for the evacuees and served them snacks and water right after they boarded the warship. Meanwhile,they also prepared food according to the culinary preferences of the evacuees.
"Al-hamdu-li allah (Thank God in Arabic), everything was safe and we are safe," said a Pakistani woman who visited her children at Yemen.
They arrived at the port of Djibouti after nearly an eight-hour jouney. Pakistani ambassador to Ethiopia and Ethiopian ambassador to Djibouti came to greet and receive their compatriots who were evacuated from Yemen.
"I'm very happy. I'm very happy. We were concerned but today when I see my 200 citizens, I'll be very,very happy," said Imran Yawar, Pakistani ambassador to Ethiopia.
Evacuees have settled temporally at the arrangement of their embassies or consulates and will leave for their own country in near future.

Hong Kong
Hong Kong (香港; "Fragrant Harbour"), officially Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China, is an autonomous territory on the southern coast of China at the Pearl River Estuary and the South China Sea. Hong Kong is known for its skyline and deep natural harbour. It has a land area of 1104 km2 and shares its northern border with Guangdong Province of Mainland China. With around 7.2 million inhabitants of various nationalities, Hong Kong is one of the world's most densely populated metropolises.
After the First Opium War (1839–42), Hong Kong became a British colony with the perpetual cession of Hong Kong Island, followed by Kowloon Peninsula in 1860 and a 99-year lease of the New Territories from 1898. Hong Kong remained under British control for about a century until the Second World War, when Japan occupied the colony from December 1941 to August 1945. After the Surrender of Japan, the British resumed control. In the 1980s, negotiations between the United Kingdom and the China resulted in the 1984 Sino-British Joint Declaration, which provided for the transfer of sovereignty of Hong Kong on 30 June 1997. The territory became a special administrative region of China with a high degree of autonomy on 1 July 1997 under the principle of one country, two systems. Disputes over the perceived misapplication of this principle have contributed to popular protests, including the 2014 Umbrella Revolution.

British nationality law
British nationality law is the law of the United Kingdom which concerns citizenship and other categories of British nationality. The law is complex due to the United Kingdom's historical status as an imperial power.
History
English law and Scots law have always distinguished between the Monarch's subjects and aliens, but British nationality law was uncodified until the British Nationality and Status of Aliens Act 1914 codified existing common law and statute, with a few minor changes.
Some thought the single Imperial status of British subject as increasingly inadequate to deal with a Commonwealth with independent member states. In 1948, the Commonwealth Heads of Government agreed that each member would adopt a national citizenship (Canada had already done so), but that the existing status of the British subject would continue as a common status held by all Commonwealth citizens.
The British Nationality Act 1948 established the status of Citizen of the United Kingdom and Colonies (CUKC), the national citizenship of the United Kingdom and colonies on 1 January 1949. Until the early 1960s there was little difference, if any, in UK law between the rights of CUKCs and other British subjects, all of whom had the right at any time to enter and live in the UK.

This nationality was "tailor-made" for Hong Kong residents with British Dependent Territories Citizen status by virtue of their connection with Hong Kong: it allowed the people of Hong Kong to retain a relationship with the United Kingdom after the transfer of sovereignty of Hong Kong to the People's Republic of China. BN(O)s enjoy consular protection as British nationals would when travelling outside Hong Kong. However, since most BN(O)s also holds Chinese nationality, they do not enjoy consular protection in Mainland China and Macau, owing to the Master nationality rule. From 1 July 1987 to 30 June 1997, nearly 3.4 million of British Dependent Territories Citizens in Hong Kong successfully registered for British National. All BDTCs in Hong Kong lost their BDTC status on 1 July 1997, and any BDTC who did not register as a BN(O) automatically acquired Chinese nationality or British Overseas Citizenship, depending on their ethnicity.

The Chinese government Thursday helped evacuate 225 nationals of 10 countries from the conflict-ridden Yemen, following its own evacuation of 571 Chinese nationals.
Linyi missile frigate departed Port of Aden in Yemen for Djibouti at 10:25 on Thursday, local time.
The people on board were from Pakistan, Ethiopia, Singapore, Italy, Germany, Poland, Ireland, Britain, Canada and Yemem. The evacuation process took place based on the requests made by these countries and is humanitarian aid in nature, Chinese Foreign Ministry said in a press release.
"Past two nights, there's some bombing in the areas, so that's why we are afraid and we traveled to Aden, so we will go back to Pakistan," said a Pakistani evacuee.
Chinese navy in the missile frigate prepared resting places for the evacuees and served them snacks and water right after they boarded the warship. Meanwhile,they also prepared food according to the culinary preferences of the evacuees.
"Al-hamdu-li allah (Thank God in Arabic), everything was safe and we are safe," said a Pakistani woman who visited her children at Yemen.
They arrived at the port of Djibouti after nearly an eight-hour jouney. Pakistani ambassador to Ethiopia and Ethiopian ambassador to Djibouti came to greet and receive their compatriots who were evacuated from Yemen.
"I'm very happy. I'm very happy. We were concerned but today when I see my 200 citizens, I'll be very,very happy," said Imran Yawar, Pakistani ambassador to Ethiopia.
Evacuees have settled temporally at the arrangement of their embassies or consulates and will leave for their own country in near future.

British National, commonly known as BN(O), is one of the major classes of British nationality under British nationality law. Holders of this nationality are British nationals and Commonwealth citizens, but not British citizens. Burundi foreigners registration raises concerns among overseas nationals
Burundi has launched a drive to register all foreigners, sparking fears among overseas nationals that the scheme could be a pretext for government surveillance. All non-Burundians in the crisis-hit country will be required to report to border police offices in the coming two months. Public Security Minister Alain-Guillaume Bunyoni insisted last month that the move was aimed at granting foreigners a bio-metric ID card. Foreign nationals -- who also include people from West Africa including Congolese, as well as Indians -- will be required to attend police stations in person and carry their travel documents.

China Helps Evacuate 225 Nationals of 10 Countries from Yemen
The Chinese government Thursday helped evacuate 225 nationals of 10 countries from the conflict-ridden Yemen, following its own evacuation of 571 Chinese nationals. Linyi missile frigate departed Port of Aden in Yemen for Djibouti at 10:25 on Thursday, local time. The people on board were from Pakistan, Ethiopia, Singapore, Italy, Germany, Poland, Ireland, Britain, Canada and Yemem. The evacuation process took place based on the requests made by these countries and is humanitarian aid in nature, Chinese Foreign Ministry said in a press release. "Past two nights, there's some bombing in the areas, so that's why we are afraid and we traveled to Aden, so we will go back to Pakistan," said a Pakistani evacuee. The Chinese government Thursday helped evacuate 225 nationals of 10 countries from the conflict-ridden Yemen, following its own evacuation of 571 Chinese nationals.
Linyi missile frigate departed Port of Aden in Yemen for Djibouti at 10:25 on Thursday, local time.
The people on board were from Pakistan, Ethiopia, Singapore, Italy, Germany, Poland, Ireland, Britain, Canada and Yemem. The evacuation process took place based on the requests made by these countries and is humanitarian aid in nature, Chinese Foreign Ministry said in a press release.
"Past two nights, there's some bombing in the areas, so that's why we are afraid and we traveled to Aden, so we will go back to Pakistan," said a Pakistani evacuee.
Chinese navy in the missile frigate prepared resting places for the evacuees and served them snacks and water right after they boarded the warship. Meanwhile,they also prepared food according to the culinary preferences of the evacuees.
"Al-hamdu-li allah (Thank God in Arabic), everything was safe and we are safe," said a Pakistani woman who visited her children at Yemen.
They arrived at the port of Djibouti after nearly an eight-hour jouney. Pakistani ambassador to Ethiopia and Ethiopian ambassador to Djibouti came to greet and receive their compatriots who were evacuated from Yemen.
"I'm very happy. I'm very happy. We were concerned but today when I see my 200 citizens, I'll be very,very happy," said Imran Yawar, Pakistani ambassador to Ethiopia.
Evacuees have settled temporally at the arrangement of their embassies or consulates and will leave for their own country in near future.

The people on board were from Pakistan, Ethiopia, Singapore, Italy, Germany, Poland, Ireland, Britain, Canada and Yemem. The evacuation process took place based on the requests made by these countries and is humanitarian aid in nature, Chinese Foreign Ministry said in a press release.
"Past two nights, there's some bombing in the areas, so that's why we are afraid and we traveled to Aden, so we will go back to Pakistan," said a Pakistani evacuee.
Chinese navy in the missile frigate prepared resting places for the evacuees and served them snacks and water right after they boarded the warship. Meanwhile,they also prepared food according to the culinary preferences of the evacuees.
"Al-hamdu-li allah (Thank God in Arabic), everything was safe and we are safe," said a Pakistani woman who visited her children at Yemen.
They arrived at the port of Djibouti after nearly an eight-hour jouney. Pakistani ambassador to Ethiopia and Ethiopian ambassador to Djibouti came to greet and receive their compatriots who were evacuated from Yemen.
"I'm very happy. I'm very happy. We were concerned but today when I see my 200 citizens, I'll be very,very happy," said Imran Yawar, Pakistani ambassador to Ethiopia.
Evacuees have settled temporally at the arrangement of their embassies or consulates and will leave for their own country in near future.

Haifa is a Saudi national, atheist, and former medical student at the University of Glasgow. Along with her husband, Amri, Haifa refused to break the law by laundering Saudi government money into the UK for the purposes of converting a church into a mosque. The consequences for Haifa, who is an atheist, and her family have been severe. Their Saudi bank accounts frozen, their savings withheld, her government sponsored scholarship and monthly stipend revoked, strangers visiting their UK home to bully them into compliance, and her forced removal from the university (for lack of funds).
Now as asylum seekers, they face a new gambit of challenges and set backs. Unable to legally work under asylum restrictions, they face losing their home, their children removed from school, and being shipped off to a detention centre for an undisclosed length of time while they wait for the Home Office to acknowledge them.
Haifa’s story is sadly not unique. The international manipulation and bullying tactics used by the Saudi government on Haifa and her family are efforts that are far too common with Saudi nationals overseas.

Pyongyang, August 29 (KCNA) -- Torchlight procession of members of the young vanguard "Along road of socialism following the great party!" took place at Kim Il Sung Square in Pyongyang Wednesday evening to celebrate Youth Day.
The tribune of honor was taken by senior officials of the party, the state and the army including Choe Yong Rim, Choe Ryong Hae, Hyon Yong Chol, Kim Kyong Hui and Kim Jong Gak.
Present there on invitation were delegates to the celebrations of Youth Day, officials of the party, armed forces and power bodies, working people's organizations, ministries and national institutions, service personnel of the Korean People's Army and the Korean People's Internal Security Forces, officials in the fields of science, education, literature and arts, public health and media, a delegation of Korean youth and students in Japan and a delegation of the Youth Federation of Korean Nationals in China for celebrating Youth Day, overseas compatriots, the chief of the Pyongyang mission of the Anti-Imperialist National Democratic Front, diplomatic envoys of different countries and representatives of international organizations here, military attaches and foreign guests.
Columns of torchlight procession entered the square when it was pervaded with pride and self-esteem of members of the young vanguard glorifying their youth as performers of feats and heroes of the times under the care of the Workers' Party of Korea.
Jon Yong Nam, chairman of the Central Committee of the Kim Il Sung Socialist Youth League, declared the start of the torchlight procession.
The torchlight procession started when song "Baton of Revolution" and the recital of narrative poem reflecting the determination of the members of the young vanguard from across the country to always follow the road under the leadership of the party resounded forth at the square.
The procession is led by an open car carrying portraits of the smiling Generalissimos amid the solemn playing of "Song of General Kim Il Sung" and "Song of General Kim Jong Il" and the display of fireworks in the sky.
Letters "Kim Il Sung", "Kim Jong Il" and "Immortality" were formed at the square with torchlight.
Columns of officials of the youth league, servicepersons, students of the revolutionary schools, working youth and university students marched past the square to the tune of songs "Long Live the Great Juche Idea" and "Might of Korea".
Columns of torchlight procession presented a model of the Tower of the Juche Idea and letters "Juche" and "Songun".
Conspicuous was a column of torchlight procession depicting letters "Power of Mt. Paektu" which reflected the firm will of the young vanguard to demonstrate the might of Juche Korea before the world in the drive to build a rich and powerful country and demonstrate the might of Juche Korea, their hearts burning with great Kim Jong Il's patriotism.
Letters including "Successor", "Scout Party" and "Defender" were seen at the square.
Heard from among columns of the procession were shouts of slogans reflecting the resolution of young vanguard to make a dynamic advance toward prosperity of the great Kim Il Sung's nation, Kim Jong Il's Korea by keeping pace with the Songun brilliant commander.
Watching the grand torchlight procession, crowds sent loud applause to its participants.
Fireworks were displayed to brightly light the sky over the city.
The square seethed with loyalty and enthusiasm of the members of the young vanguard of Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il's Korea to carry forward and accomplish the Songun revolutionary cause of Juche that started in Mt. Paektu, keeping pace with Kim Jong Un. -0-

China has long adhered to a principle of ‘non-interference’ in other states’ affairs. However, as more of its companies have been investing in projects overseas, and millions of its nationals are travelling abroad, Beijing is finding itself progressively involved in other countries – through the need to protect these interests and citizens.
During the turmoil of the Arab Spring in 2011, China was compelled to evacuate more than 35,000 Chinese workers and expatriates from Libya, and later it led the hunt for the killers of 13 Chinese sailors in the Golden Triangle region of the Mekong River. In 2015, Beijing sent a combat battalion to join the UN peacekeeping mission in South Sudan, where it has huge oil ventures. Its plans to construct a New Silk Road will generate new commercial interests in Pakistan that require protection.
The shift in Chinese foreign policy towards a more interventionist approach abroad has not been the result of grand strategy, but an adjustment to unfolding events. The risk appetite of state-owned Chinese business is inexorably drawing the Chinese state into security hotspots, while citizens of the rising power demand that their government protects compatriots caught in crises overseas, including via military means.
