A tropical cyclone is a rapidly rotating storm system characterized by a low-pressure center, strong winds, and a spiral arrangement of thunderstorms that produce heavy rain. Depending on its location and strength, a tropical cyclone is referred to by names such as hurricane (/ˈhʌrᵻkən/ or /ˈhʌrᵻkeɪn/), typhoon /taɪˈfuːn/, tropical storm, cyclonic storm, tropical depression, and simply cyclone.
Tropical cyclones typically form over large bodies of relatively warm water. They derive their energy through the evaporation of water from the ocean surface, which ultimately recondenses into clouds and rain when moist air rises and cools to saturation. This energy source differs from that of mid-latitude cyclonic storms, such as nor'easters and European windstorms, which are fueled primarily by horizontal temperature contrasts. The strong rotating winds of a tropical cyclone are a result of the conservation of angular momentum imparted by the Earth's rotation as air flows inwards toward the axis of rotation. As a result, they rarely form within 5° of the equator. Tropical cyclones are typically between 100 and 2,000 km (62 and 1,243 mi) in diameter.

Most of the information about Hurricane Matthew comes from forecasters at the National Hurricane Center in Miami. Scott Pelley spoke with its director, meterologist Rick Knabb, about how dangerous Matthew could be.
This visualization shows one of the largest simulations ever computed for Hurricane Katrina. The National Center for Atmospheric Research computed a complex numerical model that evolves the conditions of the storm resulting in a simulation that closely matches the actual event. The visualization was created by the Advanced Visualization Laboratory at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications, University of Illinois. The visualization shows the storm’s evolution over a 1.5 day portion of the simulation, as the storm gains energy over the warm ocean. Volume-rendered clouds show abundant moisture. Trajectories follow moist air rising into intense “hot tower” thunderstorms, and trace strong winds around the eye wall; rapidly rising air is yellow, sinking air blue. The sun, moon, a...

#1 in the Marchaloops series - I'm setting myself a challenge to put a loop a day online, all month long. In like a lion, out like a lamb, and beware the ides in between. Made with crazy Japanese sticky tape stuck onto clear 16mm leader. Said tape was procured at the magical convenience store that Dory and I found at the entrance to Hurricane Ridge in Olympic National Park last summer. "Hurricane Plaid" is dedicated to Jodie "Rad Plaid" Mack, plaid to know ya!
A Hurricane Creek run in the Hurricane Creek Wilderness Area of Newton County and the Ozark National Forest. This was a moderate flow and the first time for two of the boaters. I salvaged their gear once or twice along the way, but they returned the favor by helping me replace a completely flat tire and partial flat that some nice person decided inflict on my car while we were on the river that day. Had not been for my pals, bad things might have happened - like being stuck underneath a vehicle, much less alone in the middle of nowhere for a long time. The song for this paddle is Forgiven by Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals. I forgive the criminal that tampered with my vehicle that day. It was A GREAT DAY to be on the creek!!! Of note, the Ozark Highlands Trail parallels much of...

A Cogent Benger Documentary These theories are as wild as they are plausible. Using both 3D near-photorealistic CG animation and stylized 2D animation, intercut with location demonstrations and lab testing, and with dramatic “ticking clock” scenes inside the National Hurricane Center, HOW TO STOP A HURRICANE is part human drama and part technological exploration, about people with dreams, who strive to confront and control one of Nature’s most dangerous creations.
LULU SCOUT - HURRICANE (Official Music Video) Sound matters. Kids today color outside the lines. 11-year-old singer/songwriter Lulu Scout and 12-year-old DJ/Producer Aiden Jude have broken barriers with this slick and swinging remixed single of Scout’s original composition “Hurricane” which appears on her debut album Uncovered (Itunes). An adrenalizing achievement, Jude's mighty mix is filled with celestial soaring beats, action-packed pulses, and ambitious top lines that combust within this powerful dance floor filler. Meant for a dripping warehouse rather than the schoolyard, Hurricane introduces Scout's soaring vocals which float above a dizzying supernova of treble soaked synth-smashes. Infused with frosted peaks and sky scraping sparks, it’s a rallying cry, imbuing the elemental titl...
