Tamerlano (Tamerlane, HWV 18) is an opera in three acts written for the Royal Academy of Music (1719), with music by George Frideric Handel to an Italian text by Nicola Francesco Haym, adapted from Agostin Piovene's Tamerlano together with another libretto entitled Bajazet after Nicolas Pradon's Tamerlan, ou La Mort de Bajazet.
One of Handel's major works, he composed it in the space of 20 days in July 1724, in a year in which two more great operas were composed by him: Giulio Cesare and Rodelinda. Eve Meyer has noted how the role of Bajazet was one of the first major tenor roles in opera, as well as the place of the opera in the contemporary fashion for Turkish culture (turquerie).
It was first performed at the King's Theatre, London, on 31 October 1724, around the time of the annual performance of Nicholas Rowe's Tamerlane plays (4–5 November). There were 12 performances and it was repeated on 13 November 1731. The opera then received a production in Hamburg with the recitative in German and the arias in Italian. The first modern production was in Karlsruhe on 7 September 1924. Amongst recent productions, it appeared in the repertory of the Washington National Opera in 2008 and of the Los Angeles Opera in November 2009; both productions featured tenor Placido Domingo, who is also the general director of both companies.

In questa lezione di Storia:
Nella seconda metà del XIII secolo l’impero mongolo costituito da Gengis Khan fu frazionato in quattro stati indipendenti: il khanato cinese del Gran Khan, il khanato dell’Orda d’Oro, il khanato di Persia e il khanato di Chagatai. La divisione dell’impero determinò una forte frammentazione politica, segnata da contrapposizioni interne. Di questa debolezza si giovò, nella seconda metà del XIV secolo, un nobile di Samarcanda, Timur lo zoppo, chiamato dagli occidentali Tamerlano.
Egli costituì, dal 1380 al 1405 un grande impero esteso dall’India alla penisola arabica che andò a minacciare anche i domini ottomani in Asia Minore, bloccando l’avanzata turca e l’assedio di Costantinopoli, concedendo così qualche decennio di vita in più all’impero bizantino.

Wedded though I am to online information gathering, sometimes it takes a printed brochure to get the travel juices flowing. A few months ago the mail carrier brought a booklet from Les Talens Lyriques, a fine period-instrument/vocal ensemble based in France and led by harpsichordist Christophe Rousset ... Tamerlano on a Saturday night, and a Sunday matinee performance of Alcina. Those were the first pieces in a simple travel puzzle ... * * * ... ....

It was rock 'n' roll that spoke to her — Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix were favorites ... This is the L.A ...
