Shemp Howard (March 11, 1895 – November 22, 1955) was an American actor and comedian. Born Samuel Horwitz, he was called "Shemp" because "Sam" came out that way in his mother's thick Litvak accent. He is best known today for his role as the third stooge in the Three Stooges, a role he first portrayed at the beginning of the act in the early 1920s (1923-1932) while the act was still associated with Ted Healy and known as "Ted Healy and his Stooges", and again from 1947 until his death in 1955. Between his times with the Stooges, Shemp had a successful film career as a solo comedian.
Shemp was born in Manhattan, New York, and raised in Brooklyn. He was the third-born of the five Horwitz brothers, the sons of their Lithuanian Jewish parents: Solomon Horwitz (1872-1943) and Jennie Horwitz (1870-1939). Moe Howard and Curly Howard were his younger brothers.
Shemp's brother, Moe Howard, started in show business as a youngster, on stage and in films. Eventually, he and older brother Shemp tried their hands as minstrel-show-style "blackface" comedians with an act they called "Howard and Howard—A Study In Black". Meanwhile, they also worked for a rival vaudeville circuit at the same time, by appearing without makeup.

In addition, he is being pestered by a young TV exec who wants his team for a live show at his city. Amidst all this, Moe can't help but think back to the past starting from the beginning of the team's career with Ted Healy and their break from him to eventually having a successful film career in shorts. Yet that can't obscure the tragedy of Jerome "Curly" Howard's stroke and death or the death of his other brother, Shemp. While he reminisces, Moe must decide whether to gamble on whether there will be a new generation of fans who will let the team to enter a new phase of their career.

Genres: Comedy, Musical, Short,Before he rejoined the Three Stooges team in 1947, Shemp Howard had his own solo 2-reeler comedy series at Columbia Pictures. This 1945 release doesn't have much of a story...inventor Tom Kennedy moves next door to 'human horsefly' Shemp, who proceeds to make his life miserable in a series of wacky slapstick encounters. If you like Shemp you'll like this flick, because it's all Shemp from start to finish! He's clearly having a good time here and who wouldn't, getting to work alongside babes like Christine McIntyre and Rebel Randall. I especially like the Jonathan Winters-like vocal sound effects Shemp emits at a couple of points. Produced at the Hugh McCollum unit, directed by Harry Edwards, co-written by Ed Bernds.
Here's Shemp Howard in what many consider to be his best Columbia solo short, MR. NOISY.
Two min clip of Shemp Howard at his best. This taken from a 1956 episode called, "For Crimin' Out Loud (1956)". Shemps last film as he died November 22, 1955 at the age of 60.

Here's my tour of the grave cites of all of the Three Stooges. They are buried at four different cemeteries total, and the map slide at the beginning of the video gives you all of those details.
Stooge Shemp Howard, in a rare dramatic role, stars in this post-code movie with the pre-code look and feel. Also starring Weldon Heyburn, a Gable lookalike, and in the title role, Rose Hovak. Directed by Luther Reed.
In 1955, Stooge Shemp Howard (older brother of Moe and the late Jerry or "Curly") died of a heart attack. The Three Stooges still owed Columbia Pictures four shorts by the terms of their contract. Producer Jules White shot new footage of Moe and Larry and edited it together with bits recycled from previous shorts and stock footage (both of which included Shemp). When continuity required that Shemp appear in these new scenes, a body double (Joe Palma) stood in for him, appearing only from behind or with an object obscuring his face. They also dubbed in audio of Shemp's voice, although occasionally its Palma's actual voice. I pulled out all the fake Shemp footage (also a couple of lines referring to Shemp's conspicuous absence) from those four shorts and strung them together. (Sorry, the a...

The Three Stooges were an American vaudeville and comedy act of the early to mid–20th century, best known for their numerous Columbia short subject films which are still syndicated on television. Their hallmark was physical farce and slapstick. In films, the Stooges were commonly known by their first names of "Moe, Larry, and Curly" or "Moe, Larry, and Shemp" (among other lineups, depending on the particular film). There were a total of six stooges over the act's run, with only three active at any given time. Moe and Larry were always present during the film era throughout the ensemble's run of more than forty years. Here the episode is called "Color Craziness". Enjoy!
This is the full interview of Moe Howard of The 3 Stooges on The Mike Douglas Show. I combined the 7 part video found elsewhere on YouTube into one video.

Let's face it. We watch The Three Stooges for one reason. The mayhem ! So why not watch JUST that ? I took the "mayhem" from 169 shorts (sorry, 'Woman Haters' I place in a wholly other category, 'Punch Drunks' is ground zero for me; Joe Besser's 16, mostly remakes of far superior fare and the last 4 'Fake Shemp' shorts, also remakes) and strung them together. Along the way, certain favorite, non-mayhem moments are included (usually as a prelude to mayhem !) to break it up. This is Part 1. (QUADRA A/V) If you liked this video, please give it a thumbs up and spread the word to like minded fans.
On Saturday February 4th, 2012 , and by telephone hook-up, Joan Maurer was the special guest at the REPS Meeting in Seattle, Washington. Joan Maurer is the daughter of the late Moe Howard of the legendary Three Stooges. The purpose of the Radio Enthusiasts of Puget Sound is to Celebrate those Golden Days of Radio. While the Three Stooges were on film and not on radio, their work was contemporary with many of the classic radio shows of the period that we all love and we very much enjoyed our time with Joan and learning about the history of Moe Howard and the Three Stooges.
Three Stooges fans rejoice! These beautifully restored and extremely rare routines are in color for the very first time. Take a privileged look behind the scenes with rare interviews, specials and classic TV apperances.
From mid 1975, an NBC Nightly News segment in which John Chancellor intros a new piece about the classic comedy trio, "The Three Stooges" which discusses their impact on the generation of the 1970s, most fans of which weren't even born when the original reels first aired in theaters back in the early 1930s. Moe Howard, (who it is mentioned died right after this piece was completed) gives what has to be his final interview, albeit brief. Rare piece on a great team! NOTE: THE AUDIO IS VERY LOW. PLEASE TURN UP YOUR VOLUME TO LISTEN TO THE PIECE. THANKS!
