Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (/ˈɡɑːndi, ˈɡæn-/;Hindustani: [ˈmoːɦənd̪aːs ˈkərəmtʃənd̪ ˈɡaːnd̪ʱi]; 2 October 1869 – 30 January 1948) was the preeminent leader of the Indian independence movement in British-ruled India. Employing nonviolent civil disobedience, Gandhi led India to independence and inspired movements for civil rights and freedom across the world. The honorific Mahatma (Sanskrit: "high-souled", "venerable")—applied to him first in 1914 in South Africa,—is now used worldwide. He is also called Bapu (Gujarati: endearment for "father", "papa") in India. In common parlance in India he is often called Gandhiji. He is unofficially called the Father of the Nation.
Born and raised in a Hindu merchant caste family in coastal Gujarat, western India, and trained in law at the Inner Temple, London, Gandhi first employed nonviolent civil disobedience as an expatriate lawyer in South Africa, in the resident Indian community's struggle for civil rights. After his return to India in 1915, he set about organising peasants, farmers, and urban labourers to protest against excessive land-tax and discrimination. Assuming leadership of the Indian National Congress in 1921, Gandhi led nationwide campaigns for easing poverty, expanding women's rights, building religious and ethnic amity, ending untouchability, but above all for achieving Swaraj or self-rule.

Filmmaker Vikram Gandhi explains how to start your own religion by sharing secrets from the making of his award-winning film Kumaré. Can a "fake" spiritual tradition be as true as "real" one? Can the stories we believe in bring us happiness? In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

The saga of the Gandhi family continues.. There has been intense curiosity about Indira, Rajiv and Sanjay, an obsession spanning more than five decades. We saw their weddings & too many funerals. They seemed blessed - and then cursed - as the young wives became widows. They never spoke. They never told us how it had really been. And so the world continued to speculate.. I had first met Maneka long back when Sanjay was alive, and powerful. She was young and a feisty girl then. The woman who sat before me in 2003 was changed. She seemed somewhat war-weary, somewhat resigned; but social conscience and honesty intact. Her old humour came through in flashes. Her strength and bravery was evident. In this Rendezvous, Maneka Gandhi broke her long silence and shared the relationships, the love and...
