The Holy Land (Hebrew: אֶרֶץ הַקוֹדֵשׁ Eretz HaKodesh, Latin: Terra Sancta; Arabic: الأرض المقدسة Al-Arḍ Al-Muqaddasah) is an area roughly located between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea but also includes the Eastern Bank of the Jordan River. Historically, it is synonymous with both the Land of Israel and Palestine and currently it is part of the State of Israel, the Palestinian Territories, the Lebanese Republic, the Syrian Arab Republic and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. It is considered holy by certain Jews, Christians, and Muslims.
Part of the significance of the land stems from the religious significance of Jerusalem, the holiest city to Judaism, the historical region of Jesus's ministry, and the Isra and Mi'raj event in Islam and Mount Nebo, where Moses presumably died. The perceived holiness of the land to Christianity was part of the motivation for the Crusades, as European Christians sought to win the Holy Land back from the Muslim Seljuk Turks. The Turks had taken over the Holy Land after defeating the Muslim Arabs, who had in turn conquered the area from the Christian Byzantine Empire.
Good Friday is a Christian religious holiday commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and his death at Calvary. The holiday is observed during Holy Week as part of the Paschal Triduum on the Friday preceding Easter Sunday, and may coincide with the Jewish observance of Passover. It is also known as Holy Friday, Great Friday, Black Friday, or Easter Friday, though the last term properly refers to the Friday in Easter week.
Good Friday is a widely instituted legal holiday in many national governments around the world, including in most Western countries (especially among Anglican and Catholic nations) as well as in 12 U.S. states. Some governments, such as Germany, have laws prohibiting certain acts, such as dancing and horse racing, that are seen as profaning the solemn nature of the day.
The etymology of the term "good" in the context of Good Friday is contested. Some sources claim "good" to simply mean pious or holy, while others contend that it is a corruption of "God Friday". The Oxford English Dictionary supports the first etymology, giving "of a day or season observed as holy by the church" as an archaic sense of good (good, adj. 8c), and providing examples of good tide meaning "Christmas" or "Shrove Tuesday", and Good Wednesday meaning the Wednesday in Holy Week.
Washington, D.C., formally the District of Columbia and commonly referred to as "Washington", "the District", or simply "D.C.", is the capital of the United States. The signing of the Residence Act on July 16, 1790, approved the creation of a capital district located along the Potomac River on the country's East Coast. The U.S. Constitution provided for a federal district under the exclusive jurisdiction of the Congress and the District is therefore not a part of any U.S. state.
The states of Maryland and Virginia each donated land to form the federal district, which included the pre-existing settlements of Georgetown and Alexandria. Named in honor of George Washington, the City of Washington was founded in 1791 to serve as the new national capital. In 1846, Congress returned the land originally ceded by Virginia; in 1871, it created a single municipal government for the remaining portion of the District.
Washington had an estimated population of 672,228 as of July 2015. Commuters from the surrounding Maryland and Virginia suburbs raise the city's population to more than one million during the workweek. The Washington metropolitan area, of which the District is a part, has a population of over 6 million, the seventh-largest metropolitan statistical area in the country.
Pope Francis (Latin: Franciscus; Italian: Francesco; Spanish: Francisco; born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, 17 December 1936) is the 266th and current Pope of the Roman Catholic Church, a title he holds ex officio as Bishop of Rome, and Sovereign of the Vatican City. He chose Francis as his papal name in honor of Saint Francis of Assisi. Francis is the first Jesuit pope, the first from the Americas, the first from the Southern Hemisphere and the first non-European pope since the Syrian Gregory III in 741.
Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Bergoglio worked briefly as a chemical technologist and nightclub bouncer before beginning seminary studies. He was ordained a Catholic priest in 1969 and from 1973 to 1979 was Argentina's provincial superior of the Society of Jesus. He was accused of handing two priests to the National Reorganization Process during the Dirty War, but the lawsuit was ultimately dismissed. He became the Archbishop of Buenos Aires in 1998 and was created a cardinal in 2001 by Pope John Paul II. He led the Argentine Church during the December 2001 riots in Argentina, and the administrations of Néstor Kirchner and Cristina Fernández de Kirchner considered him a political rival. Following the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI on 28 February 2013, a papal conclave elected Bergoglio as his successor on 13 March.
The Franciscan Monastery of the Holy Land is a beautiful building located in Northeast DC. I got there too late in the day to take a guided tour, which would have let me see some of the underground sites, but I did get to walk around the beautiful cloister and see the main church building. I hope you'll get a chance to take a tour and see what I came too late to view!

We are a new community called 'The Hermits of St. Francis'. We want to revive the franciscan rule, living in poverty, silence and prayer. This old hermitage, called St. Bartholomew monastery, is near assisi in italy. It was visited by St. Francis and his first companions. now it is on the brick of ruin. We would like to repair it and bring it back to what it was in the past. For the sake of God, help us. We need 500.000 dollars to repair this old hermitage, full of story and art. Unless we act now, soon it will fall to ruin. We have no money, as we live in poverty according to St. Francis rule. Please, help us. Just give us one stone, for the sake of God. We will be grateful to you in our prayer.
This tour of the Franciscan Monastery is excellent and is followed briefly by a drive-by tour of closed monuments in Washington DC including the Washington Monument which is completely covered in scaffolding
RORATE EXCLUSIVE (video courtesy of Rorate Caeli Blog Spot) Video of Franciscans of the Immaculate Seminary the day it was shuttered by Commissioner Volpi When will the mainstream media demand answers? On December 8, 2013, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, the Theological Seminary of the Immaculate Mediatrix (STIM) of the Franciscans of the Immaculate (FI) was closed by their Apostolic Commissioner, Fr. Fidenzio Volpi. On the same day, one of the friars filmed the entire day, which presents, along with additional footage, the way of life in that same seminary. Volpi meets with Pope Francis the day the seminary was closed. This footage was then kept in secret, witness of something no longer tolerable to those in power, unseen until now. 3 HOURS Healing Gregorian Chant 432Hz | Bendictus | Powerfull music for healing body mind and spirit Gregorian chant is the central tradition of Western plainchant, a form of monophonic, unaccompanied sacred song of the western Roman Catholic Church. Gregorian chant developed mainly in western and central Europe during the 9th and 10th centuries, with later additions and redactions. Although popular legend credits Pope St. Gregory the Great with inventing Gregorian chant, scholars believe that it arose from a later Carolingian synthesis of Roman chant and Gallican chant. Gregorian chants were organized initially into four, then eight, and finally 12 modes. Typical melodic features include a characteristic ambitus, and also characteristic intervallic patterns relative to a referential mod...

With only basic equipment, they did the filming and put together the presentation with sensitivity and understanding.
Mission is integral to the Franciscan charism. Five of us student friars went to Nicaragua to find out why. Given the communal nature of the trip, I decided to document the experiences of my brothers, not just my own, so to let them share our story while I filmed and edited. Find more reflections at breakinginthehabit.org.
Fr. Dan brings the Franciscan tradition to life by imagining our faith journeys in terms of "dating" as a dynamic, creative, and renewing spiritual thread for twenty-first century Christians.

Anyone who visits the basilica of the Sacro Convento, with its famous frescos of Giotto and Cimabue, is impressed and astonished by the sight of its richness, which is so in contrast with the teaching of 'il poverello' Francis. The tomb of Francis lies in the lowest part of the basilica. The inhabitants of the monastery do not call themselves Franciscans but Conventuals. They see themselves as keepers of his tomb, as protectors and promotors of his thoughts. The Franciscanbs who live in the sanctuary Eremo delle Carceri. The statue of St. Anthony is carried from the Franciscan monastery all the way to the main square, and back. Saint Anthony of Padua was a Portuguese Catholic priest and friar of the Franciscan Order. He was born and raised by a wealthy family in Lisbon, Portugal, and died in Padua, Italy. Noted by his contemporaries for his powerful preaching, expert knowledge of scripture, and undying love and devotion to the poor and the sick, he was one of the most-quickly canonized saints in church history. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anthony_of_Padua
