Musiq Soulchild
Musiq Soulchild or Musiq (/ˈmjuːsɪk/; born Taalib Johnson; September 16, 1977) is an American singer and songwriter whose style blends funk, alternative rock, blues, jazz, some gospel influences and hip hop.
Biography
Musiq was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, grew up in a strict Muslim household and is the oldest of nine children. At an early age, Musiq left home and dropped out of school at the age of 17. It was during that time Musiq started to build a reputation for being musically gifted, beat boxing for MC's, free styling on the open mic circuit, scatting at a jazz club, or just performing a cappella in the streets of Philadelphia, which is where he got the name "Musiq" and later added "Soulchild", which is intended to respect and represent the legacy and traditions of past soul artists. He cites as his inspiration such icons as Stevie Wonder, James Brown, Patti LaBelle, Billie Holiday, Sly & the Family Stone and Ray Charles.
Musiq Soulchild has had 2 platinum albums, 2 gold albums and 7 hit singles. He has received awards from Billboard, BET, ASCAP, BMI, and Soul Train. He has also earned award nominations from MTV, the American Music Awards, the NAACP, and 11 Grammy nominations, including 3 for his 2007 album Luvanmusiq.

American Drone Industries films an Evening Under the Stars at Wolf Creek Amphitheater
American Drone Industries was contacted by the production company behind the Wolf Creek Amphitheater concert featuring Fantasia, Musiq Soulchild, Dru Hill, and various other musicians. The production company wanted a video to highlight the evening, the performances and the electricity of the crowd. American Drone Industries used multiple drones to capture and stream live video. Live audio from the concert was integrated with royalty free music from The Passion HiFi and inclucdes a brief excerpt from an electrifiying performance by Grammy winning artist, Fantasia Barrino.

Yamaha Drum Artist Mark Colenburg is 100% music. Having played since age 2, the drums are no longer an instrument for Colenburg. They're an extension of his body and a vehicle for artistic expression.
As drummer Mark has had the opportunity to perform with some of today's greats-- Common, Mos Def, Lalah Hathaway, Kenny Garrett, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Lauryn Hill, the list goes on. For the Robert Glasper Experiment, Colenburg has won last year's Grammy for "Best RnB Album" and toured the globe for variety of live perfomrnaces.
Mark Colenburg has made his presence felt amongst a seriously happening group of musicians (Casey Benjamin, Derrick Hodge, and Robert Glasper.) With a rhythmic conception that draws from artists like Philly Joe to J-Dilla, Mark Colenburg´s sound is both historically informed and progressive.
In this video, Mark performs with fellow musician & Blue Note Artist Derrick Hodge on bass. Known as a hybrid bassist as well as a solo artist, Derrick Hodge has performed and recorded with various artists including Common, Q-Tip, Kanye West, Timbaland, Jill Scott, Mos Def, Musiq Soulchild, Floetry, Gerald Levert & The Robert Glasper Experiment.

Upon completing college, he inked songwriting deal with EMI Records; then eventually working for DJ Jazzy Jeff’s A Touch of Jazz Productions. At age 30, bassist, composer, and producer Derrick Hodge is a modern “jack of all trades.” His depth and knowledge of hip-hop, jazz, soul, and gospel has allowed him to excel in the record industry. Derrick’s many accomplishments have made him one of the most requested musicians as of date.
The Philadelphia native was playing the bass in church at age 7. While attending middle school, he was learning and mastering both the upright acoustic and electric bass. Because he didn’t have formal training for the bass, Derrick learned and played the bass by watching his peers play the violin in concert band and orchestra. After completing high school Derrick attended Temple University where he received his Bachelor’s Degree in Music.
Throughout his career he’s worn many shoes in the business. He’s contributed music score’s for Spike Lee’s “When The Levee’s Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts” and his “Miracle At St. Anna.” Derrick also scored the movies “The Recruiter” and “The Black Candle.” In addition to scoring music, he’s played and backed with the likes of Jill Scott, Common, Q-Tip, Musiq Soulchild, Terell Stafford, Mulgrew Miller, Terence Blanchard, and Kanye West. Derrick is currently the musical director for Grammy-Award winning soul vocalist Maxwell.

Whalum’s latest Mack Avenue Record’s release “Everything Is Everything: The Music of Donny Hathaway” features guest artists Lalah Hathaway, Jeff Golub, and Musiq Soulchild. The eleven tracks feature songs recorded throughout Donny’s short and amazing life as one of soul music’s innovators and accomplished vocalists.
Kirk, a native of Memphis, Tennessee, was raised in the church but was no stranger to soul music. Currently, he serves as the President and Executive Director of the Stax Museum of American Soul Music. He’s also earned his Masters in Religion and is an ordained minister. Over the last 20 years Kirk has recorded and backed some of the most successful vocalists ranging from Whitney Houston, Luther Vandross, Barbara Streisand, Take 6, Quincy Jones, Babyface, and Nancy Wilson.
Both Kirk and vocalist Lalah Hathaway sat down with journalist and interviewer Brian Pace at this year’s 2010 Detroit International Jazz Festival on the new CD.
