Ian McShane - Lovejoy Interview
Ian David McShane[1] (born 29 September 1942) is an English actor, director, producer and voice artist.
Despite appearing in numerous films, McShane is best known for his television roles, particularly BBC's Lovejoy[2] (1986–94) and HBO's drama series Deadwood (2004–06).[3] McShane starred as King Silas Benjamin in the NBC series Kings, Bishop Waleran in The Pillars of the Earth, Tai Lung in Kung Fu Panda, and as Blackbeard in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.
McShane was born in Blackburn, Lancashire, on 29 September 1942, the son of Irene (née Cowley) (b. 1921) and footballer Harry McShane (1920–2012).[2][3][4] His father was Scottish and his mother, who was born in England, was of Irish and English descent.[5] McShane grew up in Urmston, Lancashire, and attended Stretford Grammar School. He studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and was still a student there when he appeared in his first film, 1962's The Wild and the Willing.[2] McShane was a member of National Youth Theatre.
In Britain, McShane's best known role may be that of antiques dealer Lovejoy in the hit BBC drama series of the same name.[2][3] He also enjoyed fame in the United States as English cad Don Lockwood in the soap opera Dallas and as an English cockfighting aficionado in the miniseries Roots. Even before Lovejoy, McShane was a pin-up as a result of appearances in television series such as Wuthering Heights (1967, as Heathcliff), If It's Tuesday, This Must Be Belgium (1969, as Charlie), Jesus of Nazareth (1977, as Judas Iscariot), and Disraeli (1978)—as well as films like Sky West and Crooked (1965) and Battle of Britain (1969).
In the United States, he is perhaps best known for the role of historical figure Al Swearengen in the HBO series Deadwood,[3] for which he won the 2005 Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Television Drama.[2] He was also nominated for at the 2005 Emmy Award and Screen Actors Guild Awards.
Within the science fiction community, McShane is best known for playing the character Robert Bryson, Ph.D. in Babylon 5: The River of Souls.
In 1985, he appeared as an iconic MC on Grace Jones' Slave to the Rhythm, a concept album which featured his narration interspersed throughout, and which sold over a million copies worldwide.[6][7]
Other recent roles include Captain Hook in Shrek the Third, Iofur Raknison (known as Ragnar Sturlusson in the film) in The Golden Compass, Tai Lung in Kung Fu Panda (for which he received an Annie Award nomination), and Mr. Bobinsky, the strange Russian neighbor in Coraline. In live-action, he has performed in the comedy Hot Rod, the action/thriller Death Race, and The Seeker. He has appeared on the NBC television drama series The West Wing as a Russian diplomat.
During 2007–08, he starred as Max in the 40th anniversary Broadway revival of Harold Pinter's The Homecoming, co-starring Eve Best, Raúl Esparza and Michael McKean, and directed by Daniel Sullivan, at the Cort Theatre (16 December 2007 to 13 April 2008).
In 2009, McShane appeared on the short-lived NBC television drama series Kings, which was based on the biblical story of David. His portrayal of King Silas Benjamin, an analogue of King Saul, was highly praised, with one critic saying, "Whenever Kings seems to falter, McShane appears to put bite marks all over the scenery."[8]
In 2010, McShane starred in the miniseries The Pillars of the Earth as Bishop Waleran Bigod. The series was a historical drama set in 12th century England and adapted from Ken Follett's novel of the same name.
Also in 2010, the Walt Disney Company confirmed that McShane would play Blackbeard in the fourth installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, On Stranger Tides.[9] In 2013, McShane played King Brahmwell in Bryan Singer's Jack the Giant Slayer.[10]
Since 2010, McShane has narrated the opening teases for each round of ESPN's coverage of The Open Championship.[11]
In 2012, McShane had a guest role for two episodes as Murder Santa, a sadistic serial killer in the 1960s in the second season of American Horror Story, alongside Jessica Lange and Zachary Quinto.
In 2016 he will join the cast of the HBO series Game of Thrones in Season 6.
McShane has been married three times: he first married and divorced Suzanne Farmer in the 1960s. In 1977, McShane began a relationship with actress Sylvia Kristel (star of the sex film Emmanuelle) after meeting her on the set of The Fifth Musketeer.[13] The affair ended his marriage to his second wife, the model Ruth Post, who is the mother of his two children, Kate and Morgan.[2] In 1980, he married actress Gwen Humble. NBC president Angela Bromstad said Kings was just too hard to promote in 30 seconds. Well, here's the first of a few promos I slapped together, while a minute rather than 30 seconds, still gives more than than those horrible, ambiguous promos NBC did run.

A tribute to the queen and the king from the NBC TV show Kings. Mostly featuring the events of The New King and Queen Rose's reaction to them -- Susanna Thompson did a magnificent job playing this part, so I couldn't resist.
Technically, they were far from a happy couple (to put it mildly), but let's forget about it for a while ;)

Susanna Thompson
Susanna Thompson (born January 27, 1958) is an American television, stage and film actress. She is known for her roles in films Little Giants (1994), Ghosts of Mississippi (1996), Random Hearts (1999) and Dragonfly (2002), and as Karen Sammler on ABC drama series Once and Again (1999–2002). From 2012 to 2014, Thompson starred as Moira Queen as a regular cast member in the CW series Arrow.
Career
Thompson received a Dramatic Award for her role as Luisa in A Shayna Maidel. She was also nominated for Best Actress by the San Diego Critics Circle for her role in Agnes of God. She may be best known for her television work, which includes playing Karen Sammler on Once and Again, Michelle Generoo in an episode of The X-Files and a recurring role as the Borg Queen in the Star Trek: Voyager two-part episodes "Dark Frontier" (1999) and "Unimatrix Zero" (2000). Thompson also portrayed Denise Hydecker in the 1998 made-for-TV movie The Lake.
One of Thompson's most controversial television appearances was on an episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine entitled "Rejoined". In the episode, she participated in one of US television's first same-sex kisses. The episode first aired on October 30, 1995. She made a guest appearance on Law and Order: SVU on October 7, 2003 in the season five episode "Mother", playing Dr. Greta Heints, a psychiatrist who rehabilitates sex offenders in order to prepare them for a return to society. She is attacked and knocked unconscious in the early scenes of the episode, and in the course of the investigation, Detectives Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) and Elliot Stabler (Christopher Meloni) discover Heints has been accused of having a romantic relationship with one of her patients.

Allison Miller
Allison Miller (born September 2, 1985) is an American actress. She is best known for playing Michelle Benjamin on the NBC series Kings, Skye Tate on the Fox series Terra Nova, and Carrie on the NBC series Go On.
Early life
Miller was born in Rome, Italy, to American parents Margo and John Winn Miller. Her father is the former publisher of The Olympian newspaper in Olympia, Washington. He retired in January 2009 to pursue other interests. Her parents have since left Washington and moved back to the eastern United States.
Miller moved a lot as a child, growing up mostly in Lexington, Kentucky, before she started high school in State College and finished at Maclay School in Tallahassee, Florida.
Miller very briefly attended Boston University before attending Rhodes College for her Freshman year. She then transferred to the University of Florida in Gainesville. She is a sister of Kappa Delta sorority and was featured in a story in Kappa Delta's newsletter The Angelos.
In 2006, Miller dropped out of college and moved to Hollywood to pursue her career full-time. In addition to acting, she has training in voice, tap, and jazz, as well as in modern dance. She is a mezzo-soprano and plays the piano and the guitar. She is proficient in Spanish and French.

Kings (U.S. TV series)
Kings is an American television drama series which aired on NBC. The series' narrative is loosely based on the Biblical story of King David, but set in a kingdom that culturally and technologically resembles the present-day United States.
Advance showings received mostly positive critical reviews. The Sunday March 15, 2009 premiere placed fourth in network television ratings for that evening. After four episodes aired, NBC moved it to a Saturday slot, but only showed one more episode before pulling the series until summer. The remaining seven episodes were aired on Saturdays in June and July; however, Kings was canceled after failing to find a sufficient audience.
Plot
Kings is set in the fictional Kingdom of Gilboa, a modern absolute monarchy. Gilboa is ruled by King Silas Benjamin, who originally formed the united kingdom two decades before from the three warring countries of Gilboa, Carmel, and Selah. He believes that he has been divinely anointed king, and he often cites the day when a swarm of Monarch butterflies once landed on his head in the form of "a living crown" which called upon him to form the Monarchy and Kingdom.

Kings
King Silas Benjamin came to power in a mythical battle against the rival neighbor republic of Gath, capitalizing brilliantly and ruthlessly on his near-godly image. Farm-boy David Shepherd performs as well, saving Silas's crown prince in another epic battle, but is too noble and naive to aspire personal benefit rather then devoutly serve king and country. Nevertheless, after Silas decides to abuse David's legend, the hero is drawn into palace intrigues culminating into coup plans against Silas.

I like toys, odd musical instruments, skiing and tennis. I drive a Jeep. I work out of my studio, Cow On The Wall, in Los Angeles. I was born in Paris, Texas, in 1969 and began playing around on the family piano at the age of four. My parents quickly got me lessons, and I soon began making my own little songs. The first piece was a little ditty called "Ghost Dance." It was awful, but it gave me an idea of what I wanted to do in life. At age eight, when I saw STAR WARS, I knew for sure. I played the French horn in middle and high school marching band. In front of a mirror, I practiced conducting with a magic wand to a collection of Leonard Bernstein records my parents gave me. I continued playing piano and later bought some drums. (Of course, yes, I was in a couple of high school garage bands.) I purchased my first synthesizers when I was 14 -- a Casiotone MT-40, a Moog Bass, and a Mirage DSK. Attending the University of Texas in Austin, I failed to impress the music panel with my piano playing, so I received a nice letter informing me that I was not accepted into the School of Music and "should consider another career path." In hindsight, probably the best letter I ever received. While in college, I had the good fortune to secure a summer internship at Disney Studios in their film music department. This lead to my first job after college for Disney's Hollywood Records. After two years, I moved to Disney Music Publishing and managed their print music division. In 1996, I began freelance work: arranging music and writing method books for Hal Leonard Publishing. I authored more than 25 instrumental method books, including the best-selling piano method, "Piano for Dummies," and the award-winning series, "FastTrack Music Instruction." Oliver Queen Suite (01:07:57) • Who are you Blake Neely? I'm a composer, conductor, arranger, orchestrator, pianist and author. I'm also a husband, father, brother and son. I like toys, odd musical instruments, skiing and tennis. I drive a Jeep. I work out of my studio, Cow On The Wall, in Los Angeles. I was born in Paris, Texas, in 1969 and began playing around on the family piano at the age of four. My parents quickly got me lessons, and I soon began making my own little songs. The first piece was a little ditty called "Ghost Dance." It was awful, but it gave me an idea of what I wanted to do in life. At age eight, when I saw STAR WARS, I knew for sure. I played the French horn in middle and high school marching band. In front of a mirror, I practiced conducting with a magic wand to a collection of Leonard Bernstein records my parents gave me. I continued playing piano and later bought some drums. (Of course, yes, I was in a couple of high school garage bands.) I purchased my first synthesizers when I was 14 -- a Casiotone MT-40, a Moog Bass, and a Mirage DSK. Attending the University of Texas in Austin, I failed to impress the music panel with my piano playing, so I received a nice letter informing me that I was not accepted into the School of Music and "should consider another career path." In hindsight, probably the best letter I ever received. While in college, I had the good fortune to secure a summer internship at Disney Studios in their film music department. This lead to my first job after college for Disney's Hollywood Records. After two years, I moved to Disney Music Publishing and managed their print music division. In 1996, I began freelance work: arranging music and writing method books for Hal Leonard Publishing. I authored more than 25 instrumental method books, including the best-selling piano method, "Piano for Dummies," and the award-winning series, "FastTrack Music Instruction."
