Govardhan Asrani born 1 January 1941 in Jaipur, India , popularly known simply as Asrani, is an actor in Indian films whose Bollywood career has spanned over 35 years. His wife Manju Bansal is an actress.
He was born in a middle class Sindhi family. His father migrated to Jaipur after the Partition of India and opened a shop selling carpets. He has four sisters and three brothers: two elder and one younger. Asrani was highly uninterested in business and very weak in mathematics. He completed his matriculation from St. Xaviers School and did his graduation from Rajasthan College, Jaipur. He simultaneously worked as a voice artist on All India Radio, Jaipur, to pay for his education. His ultimate aim was to become an actor.
He began to learn acting from Sahitya Kalbhai Thakkar from 1960 to 1962. In 1962, he traveled to Mumbai and began to seek opportunities to act. In 1963, Hrishikesh Mukherjee advised him to learn acting professionally.
In 1964 Asrani joined the Film Institute in Poona. He acted in four other movies, mainly as actor or supporting actor in Gujrati from 1967 to 1969 before landing his first Hindi movie role in Umang, a low-budget movie, which had Subhash Ghai and Paintal. In 1969, he was offered the role of Rajesh Khanna's friend in Aradhana, but Rajesh was more comfortable with an older person and preferred Sujit Kumar. His old advisor, Hrishikesh Mukherjee also passed him over for the movie Anand, giving the role to an older person, but gave Asrani a role in Bawarchi. This role set the tone for a number of supporting or comic roles like Abhimaan (supporting), Chala Murari Hero Banne (comedy), Chupke Chupke (comedy), Choti Si Baat (comedy) or his most remembered role, as the jailer in Sholay. He acted in Khoon Pasina, marking a serious role other than comedy. He was hugely talked about in the 1970s and is one of Amitabh Bachchan's close friends. In the 2007 Abhishek-Aishwarya wedding, Asrani and Prem Chopra were the only two of Amitabh's old friends invited.
Asrani has acted in over 300 films over the last 35 years and also in close to 150 Gujarati films.

Asrani
Govardhan Asrani, popularly known simply as Asrani, is an Indian actor and director whose Bollywood career has spanned five decades. He has played in both Gujarati and Hindi films, and his roles include lead hero performances, character roles, comedic roles, as well as supporting parts.
Early life
Asrani was born in a middle class Hindu Sindhi family. His father migrated to Jaipur after the Partition of India and opened a shop selling carpets. He has four sisters and three brothers: two elder and one younger. Asrani was highly uninterested in business and very weak in mathematics. He completed his matriculation from St. Xaviers School and did his graduation from Rajasthan College, Jaipur. He simultaneously worked as a voice artist at All India Radio, Jaipur, to pay for his education. His ultimate aim was to become an actor.
He is married to actress Manju (nee Bansal), with whom he fell in love working together in films like Aaj Ki Taaza Khabar and Tapasya. In Aaj Ki Taza Khabar, Asrani played as Champak Boomia / Amit Desai and Manju played role of Kesari Desai and for this role Asrani won Filmfare Award for Best Comedian. Later the couple acted in Hum Nahin Sudhrenge, a home production directed by Asrani in 1980.

Govardhan Asrani born 1 January 1941 in Jaipur, India , popularly known simply as Asrani, is an actor in Indian films whose Bollywood career has spanned over 35 years. His wife Manju Bansal is an actress.
He was born in a middle class Sindhi family. His father migrated to Jaipur after the Partition of India and opened a shop selling carpets. He has four sisters and three brothers: two elder and one younger. Asrani was highly uninterested in business and very weak in mathematics. He completed his matriculation from St. Xaviers School and did his graduation from Rajasthan College, Jaipur. He simultaneously worked as a voice artist on All India Radio, Jaipur, to pay for his education. His ultimate aim was to become an actor.
He began to learn acting from Sahitya Kalbhai Thakkar from 1960 to 1962. In 1962, he traveled to Mumbai and began to seek opportunities to act. In 1963, Hrishikesh Mukherjee advised him to learn acting professionally.
In 1964 Asrani joined the Film Institute in Poona. He acted in four other movies, mainly as actor or supporting actor in Gujrati from 1967 to 1969 before landing his first Hindi movie role in Umang, a low-budget movie, which had Subhash Ghai and Paintal. In 1969, he was offered the role of Rajesh Khanna's friend in Aradhana, but Rajesh was more comfortable with an older person and preferred Sujit Kumar. His old advisor, Hrishikesh Mukherjee also passed him over for the movie Anand, giving the role to an older person, but gave Asrani a role in Bawarchi. This role set the tone for a number of supporting or comic roles like Abhimaan (supporting), Chala Murari Hero Banne (comedy), Chupke Chupke (comedy), Choti Si Baat (comedy) or his most remembered role, as the jailer in Sholay. He acted in Khoon Pasina, marking a serious role other than comedy. He was hugely talked about in the 1970s and is one of Amitabh Bachchan's close friends. In the 2007 Abhishek-Aishwarya wedding, Asrani and Prem Chopra were the only two of Amitabh's old friends invited.
Asrani has acted in over 300 films over the last 35 years and also in close to 150 Gujarati films.

Abhimaan (Hindi: अभिमान, Urdu: ابھِمان, translation: Pride) is a 1973 Bollywood musical drama film starring Amitabh Bachchan; his real-life wife, Jaya Bachchan; Asrani; and Bindu. It was directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee.
The film is perhaps best remembered for its songs, composed and arranged by the late S. D. Burman, written by Majrooh Sultanpuri, and sung by playback singers Mohammed Rafi, Lata Mangeshkar, and Kishore Kumar. Film was declared Hit by Trade Guide, The Bollywood trade magazine published at that time. Jaya Bachchan won the Filmfare Best Actress Award for Abhimaan. According to author Raju Bharatan, Hrishikesh Mukherjee based the film's story on the life of singer Kishore Kumar and his first wife, Ruma Ghosh.

Synopsis - Tapasya - meaning penance is the story of Indu, eldest child of Prof Chandrakant Sinha takes on the responsibility of rearing her younger siblings, Vinod, Madhu and the youngest sister. Indu is the breadwinner of the family and acts as both father and mother to the children. The family doctor, young Sagar Verma who treated Chandrakant through his terminal illness falls in love with Indu, which is reciprocated. Being the only son of his widowed mother brings expectations Sagar's wife is expected to take on the responsibility of managing the affairs of their palatial home, giving up her siblings and her parental home. This is not possible for Indu, who is willing to sacrifice her own love and happiness at the altar of responsibility to her brother and sisters. It is only when the children are settled in their own homes that Indu can think for herself. Sagar in the meantime has handed over his clinic to a locum and left without any forwarding address or informing anyone of his return date. Now that Indu is free, where is Sagar? Has he also given up on Indu as her siblings have and left her alone in her twilight years? Does Indu have any happiness in store for her, or is her life a penance (Tapasya) at the altar of responsibility.

Govardhan Asrani born 1 January 1941 in Jaipur, India , popularly known simply as Asrani, is an actor in Indian films whose Bollywood career has spanned over 35 years. His wife Manju Bansal is an actress. He was born in a middle class Sindhi family. His father migrated to Jaipur after the Partition of India and opened a shop selling carpets. He has four sisters and three brothers: two elder and one younger. Asrani was highly uninterested in business and very weak in mathematics. He completed his matriculation from St. Xaviers School and did his graduation from Rajasthan College, Jaipur. He simultaneously worked as a voice artist on All India Radio, Jaipur, to pay for his education. His ultimate aim was to become an actor. Govardhan Asrani born 1 January 1941 in Jaipur, India , popularly known simply as Asrani, is an actor in Indian films whose Bollywood career has spanned over 35 years. His wife Manju Bansal is an actress.
He was born in a middle class Sindhi family. His father migrated to Jaipur after the Partition of India and opened a shop selling carpets. He has four sisters and three brothers: two elder and one younger. Asrani was highly uninterested in business and very weak in mathematics. He completed his matriculation from St. Xaviers School and did his graduation from Rajasthan College, Jaipur. He simultaneously worked as a voice artist on All India Radio, Jaipur, to pay for his education. His ultimate aim was to become an actor.
He began to learn acting from Sahitya Kalbhai Thakkar from 1960 to 1962. In 1962, he traveled to Mumbai and began to seek opportunities to act. In 1963, Hrishikesh Mukherjee advised him to learn acting professionally.
In 1964 Asrani joined the Film Institute in Poona. He acted in four other movies, mainly as actor or supporting actor in Gujrati from 1967 to 1969 before landing his first Hindi movie role in Umang, a low-budget movie, which had Subhash Ghai and Paintal. In 1969, he was offered the role of Rajesh Khanna's friend in Aradhana, but Rajesh was more comfortable with an older person and preferred Sujit Kumar. His old advisor, Hrishikesh Mukherjee also passed him over for the movie Anand, giving the role to an older person, but gave Asrani a role in Bawarchi. This role set the tone for a number of supporting or comic roles like Abhimaan (supporting), Chala Murari Hero Banne (comedy), Chupke Chupke (comedy), Choti Si Baat (comedy) or his most remembered role, as the jailer in Sholay. He acted in Khoon Pasina, marking a serious role other than comedy. He was hugely talked about in the 1970s and is one of Amitabh Bachchan's close friends. In the 2007 Abhishek-Aishwarya wedding, Asrani and Prem Chopra were the only two of Amitabh's old friends invited.
Asrani has acted in over 300 films over the last 35 years and also in close to 150 Gujarati films.

He began to learn acting from Sahitya Kalbhai Thakkar from 1960 to 1962. In 1962, he traveled to Mumbai and began to seek opportunities to act. In 1963, Hrishikesh Mukherjee advised him to learn acting professionally.
In 1964 Asrani joined the Film Institute in Poona. He acted in four other movies, mainly as actor or supporting actor in Gujrati from 1967 to 1969 before landing his first Hindi movie role in Umang, a low-budget movie, which had Subhash Ghai and Paintal. In 1969, he was offered the role of Rajesh Khanna's friend in Aradhana, but Rajesh was more comfortable with an older person and preferred Sujit Kumar. His old advisor, Hrishikesh Mukherjee also passed him over for the movie Anand, giving the role to an older person, but gave Asrani a role in Bawarchi. This role set the tone for a number of supporting or comic roles like Abhimaan (supporting), Chala Murari Hero Banne (comedy), Chupke Chupke (comedy), Choti Si Baat (comedy) or his most remembered role, as the jailer in Sholay. He acted in Khoon Pasina, marking a serious role other than comedy. He was hugely talked about in the 1970s and is one of Amitabh Bachchan's close friends. In the 2007 Abhishek-Aishwarya wedding, Asrani and Prem Chopra were the only two of Amitabh's old friends invited.
Asrani has acted in over 300 films over the last 35 years and also in close to 150 Gujarati films.
