.The Battle of Los Angeles, also known as The Great Los Angeles Air Raid, is the name given by contemporary sources to the rumored enemy attack and subsequent anti-aircraft artillery barrage which took place from late 24 February to early 25 February 1942 over Los Angeles, California. The incident occurred less than three months after the United States entered World War II as a result of the Japanese Imperial Navy's attack on Pearl Harbor, and one day after the Bombardment of Ellwood on 23 February.
Initially, the target of the aerial barrage was thought to be an attacking force from Japan, but speaking at a press conference shortly afterward, Secretary of the Navy Frank Knox called the incident a "false alarm." Newspapers of the time published a number of reports and speculations of a cover-up. Some modern-day UFOlogists have suggested the targets were extraterrestrial spacecraft. When documenting the incident in 1983, the U.S. Office of Air Force History attributed the event to a case of "war nerves" likely triggered by a lost weather balloon and exacerbated by stray flares and shell bursts from adjoining batteries.

The following information comes from Wikipedia - The bombing of Darwin on 19 February 1942 was both the first and the largest single attack mounted by a foreign power against Australia. On this day, 242 Japanese aircraft attacked ships in Darwin's harbour and the town's two airfields in an attempt to prevent the Allies from using them as bases to contest the invasions of Timor and Java. The town was only lightly defended, and the Japanese inflicted heavy losses upon the Allied forces at little cost to themselves. The urban areas of Darwin also suffered some damage from the air raids, and there were a number of civilian casualties.
A greater number of bombs were dropped on Darwin than were used in the attack on Pearl Harbor. The air raids on Darwin represented a psychological blow to the Australian population, several weeks after hostilities with Japan had begun. The air raids were the first and largest of almost 100 air raids against Australia.
In 1942, Darwin was a small town with limited civil and military infrastructure. Due to its strategic position in northern Australia the Royal Australian Navy and Royal Australian Air Force had constructed bases near the town in the 1930s and early years of WW2. Darwin's pre-war population was 5,800.
Following the outbreak of the Pacific War in early December 1941, Darwin's defences were strengthened. In line with plans developed before the war, several Australian Army and RAAF units stationed in the town were also sent to the Netherlands East Indies to strengthen the defences of the islands of Ambon and Timor. In the two months before the air raids, all but 2,000 civilians were evacuated from the town. Japanese submarines I-121 and I123 laid mines off Darwin in January 1942.
By mid-February 1942 Darwin had become an important Allied base (included American, British and Canadian forces) for the defence of the NEI. The Japanese had captured Ambon, Borneo and Celebes between December 1941 and early-February 1942. Landings on Timor were scheduled for 20 February, and an invasion of Java was planned to take place shortly afterwards. In order to protect these landings from Allied interference, the Japanese military command decided to conduct a major air raid on Darwin. On 10 February a Japanese reconnaissance aircraft overflew the town, and identified an aircraft carrier (actually the seaplane tender USS Langley), five destroyers and 21 merchant ships in Darwin Harbour as well as 30 aircraft at the town's two airfields.
After the massive 19 February 1942 Japanese raid, the Northern Territory and parts of Western Australia's north were bombed 62 more times between 4 March 1942 and 12 November 1943. One of the heaviest attacks took place on 16 June 1942 when a large Japanese force set fire to the oil fuel tanks around the harbour and inflicted severe damage to the vacant banks, stores and railway yards. The Allied navies largely abandoned the naval base at Darwin after the initial 19 February attack, dispersing most of their forces to Brisbane, Fremantle and other smaller ports. Conversely, Allied air commanders launched a major build-up in the Darwin area, building more airfields and deploying many squadrons.
The four Japanese aircraft carriers (Akagi, Kaga, Hiryu and Soryu) that participated in the Bombing of Darwin were later sunk during the Battle of Midway in June 1942. A memorial ceremony is held every year on 19 February at the Cenotaph in Darwin. (END)

This short movie depicts the fiercest battle today in 1942, between the Japanese occupying troops and soldiers of the 1st Malay Brigade at Pasir Panjang. The Malay Brigade was commanded by the brave Lieutenant Adnan bin Saidi who fought along his men to defend Singapore’s last stand to their grisly deaths on the 14th Feb 1942.

By late February 1942 the Soviet winter offensive had pushed German forces back from Moscow on a broad front, to a stalemate in the Rzhev and Izium salients (shown as Isjum). Based on the German failure at Moscow, Soviet command lobbied for a new spring offensive to expand upon winter gains. The Izium bridgehead offensive, also known as the Barvenkovo Bulge, was to be committed in early May against a perceived weak-point in the German line near Kharkov. The Second Battle of Kharkov was a major Axis counter-offensive against this attack (conducted 12–28 May 1942).
The Soviet's dedicated sections of the 21st, 28th, 38th and 9th Army to the attack (765,000 men). They expected only two German divisions and the Romanian 3rd Army to oppose the operation (no more than 80,000 men). Due to poor intelligence, Soviet command was unaware of the level of German reinforcements entering the area.
The Wehrmacht had been preparing to re-initiate offensive level operations in the region under Operation Fredericus. Army Group South had received many reinforcements, taken from Army Group Center, meant to replenish units destroyed during the battle of Moscow. German mechanized forces were known, internally, to have substandard winter performance. As winter ended, weather conditions improved and unit combat effectiveness returned to a traditional level. This resulted in a twofold surprise to Soviet forces: They underestimated the size of German reserves, and their post-winter mobility.
The Red Army launched it's offensive on May 12th, from the Volchansk and Barvenkovo salients. After initial success, Soviet forces were defeated by a surprise double envelopment attack against the Donets region. The attack was committed by remnants of the German 6th Army and multiple elements of Army Group South: Including the 1st, 3rd and 4th Panzer Army, the Romanian 3rd Army, 3rd Panzer Corps and the Hungarian 2nd Army. The German operation pivoted on the incorporation of reconstituted units, reinforcements from Army Group Center and air support from the Luftwaffe's Fliegerkorps VII and the Kampfgeschwader bombing wings #27,51,55 and 76.
Soviet forces were surprised by the speed and coordination of the German attack and could not sustain their operation and repel flanking units simultaneously. The Luftwaffe achieved air superiority on May 15th allowing German command to attach bombing wings from Army Group Center to support the attack. This forced the Soviet 28th and 38th Army into a defensive mode and stalled their advance at Krasnohrad (shown as Krasnograd). Once the initial attack failed, Soviet forces attempted to retreat eastward toward the Donets River, but were blocked by advanced guard formations and forward security elements from 3rd Panzer Corps and a Hungarian 2nd Army mechanized contingency. Intense fighting continued into late May as German forces tightened the encirclement. Soviet commanders noted the severe casualties Luftwaffe attacks inflicted on trapped soldiers. By May 30th, the Red Army had lost 277,190 of 765,300 men (this number includes captured). Axis forces lost only 20,000 of 350,000 men; this was considered a great success and decisive victory.
The second battle of Kharkov was one of the last successful German operations on the eastern front. The majority of subsequent successes were defensive victories.

The Normandie was a luxury French liner which had found itself in New York when France collapsed. It was being converted to a troop ship when it caught fire on 9 February 1942 and sank as a result. The fire was caused by accident as sparks from welding caught fire and then ignited inflammable materials. There was an efficient fire fighting system on board but it was disconnected during the conversion process. However such was the paranoia about spies and the underworld, the feeling was that it could have been caused by a Nazi sympathiser or by the mafia. The result of the Normandie fire was to increase co-operation between the US authorities and organised crime which lead to further and deeper co-operation between the two at the time of the invasion of Sicily.

Army group
An army group is a military organization consisting of several field armies, which is self-sufficient for indefinite periods. It is usually responsible for a particular geographic area. An army group is the largest field organization handled by a single commander—usually a full general or field marshal—and it generally includes between 400,000 and 1,000,000 soldiers.
In the Polish Armed Forces and former Soviet Red Army an army group was known as a Front. The equivalent of an army group in the Imperial Japanese Army was a "general army" (Sō-gun (総軍)).
Army groups may be multi-national formations. For example, during World War II, the Southern Group of Armies (also known as the U.S. 6th Army Group) comprised the U.S. Seventh Army and the French First Army; the 21st Army Group comprised the British Second Army, the Canadian First Army and the US Ninth Army.
In U.S. Army usage, the number of an army group is expressed in Arabic numerals (e.g., "12th Army Group"), while the number of a field army is spelled out (e.g., "Third Army").

The German operation pivoted on the incorporation of reconstituted units, reinforcements from Army Group Center and air support from the Luftwaffe's Fliegerkorps VII and the Kampfgeschwader bombing wings #27,51,55 and 76. Soviet forces were surprised by the speed and coordination of the German attack and could not sustain their operation and repel flanking units simultaneously. The Luftwaffe achieved air superiority on May 15th allowing German command to attach bombing wings from Army Group Center to support the attack. This forced the Soviet 28th and 38th Army into a defensive mode and stalled their advance at Krasnohrad (shown as Krasnograd). Once the initial attack failed, Soviet forces attempted to retreat eastward toward the Donets River, but were blocked by advanced guard formations and forward security elements from 3rd Panzer Corps and a Hungarian 2nd Army mechanized contingency. Intense fighting continued into late May as German forces tightened the encirclement. Soviet commanders noted the severe casualties Luftwaffe attacks inflicted on trapped soldiers. By May 30th, the Red Army had lost 277,190 of 765,300 men (this number includes captured). Axis forces lost only 20,000 of 350,000 men; this was considered a great success and decisive victory. There was an efficient fire fighting system on board but it was disconnected during the conversion process. However such was the paranoia about spies and the underworld, the feeling was that it could have been caused by a Nazi sympathiser or by the mafia. The result of the Normandie fire was to increase co-operation between the US authorities and organised crime which lead to further and deeper co-operation between the two at the time of the invasion of Sicily.

The air raids on Darwin represented a psychological blow to the Australian population, several weeks after hostilities with Japan had begun. The air raids were the first and largest of almost 100 air raids against Australia.
In 1942, Darwin was a small town with limited civil and military infrastructure. Due to its strategic position in northern Australia the Royal Australian Navy and Royal Australian Air Force had constructed bases near the town in the 1930s and early years of WW2. Darwin's pre-war population was 5,800.
Following the outbreak of the Pacific War in early December 1941, Darwin's defences were strengthened. In line with plans developed before the war, several Australian Army and RAAF units stationed in the town were also sent to the Netherlands East Indies to strengthen the defences of the islands of Ambon and Timor. In the two months before the air raids, all but 2,000 civilians were evacuated from the town. Japanese submarines I-121 and I123 laid mines off Darwin in January 1942.
By mid-February 1942 Darwin had become an important Allied base (included American, British and Canadian forces) for the defence of the NEI. The Japanese had captured Ambon, Borneo and Celebes between December 1941 and early-February 1942. Landings on Timor were scheduled for 20 February, and an invasion of Java was planned to take place shortly afterwards. In order to protect these landings from Allied interference, the Japanese military command decided to conduct a major air raid on Darwin. On 10 February a Japanese reconnaissance aircraft overflew the town, and identified an aircraft carrier (actually the seaplane tender USS Langley), five destroyers and 21 merchant ships in Darwin Harbour as well as 30 aircraft at the town's two airfields.
After the massive 19 February 1942 Japanese raid, the Northern Territory and parts of Western Australia's north were bombed 62 more times between 4 March 1942 and 12 November 1943. One of the heaviest attacks took place on 16 June 1942 when a large Japanese force set fire to the oil fuel tanks around the harbour and inflicted severe damage to the vacant banks, stores and railway yards. The Allied navies largely abandoned the naval base at Darwin after the initial 19 February attack, dispersing most of their forces to Brisbane, Fremantle and other smaller ports. Conversely, Allied air commanders launched a major build-up in the Darwin area, building more airfields and deploying many squadrons.
The four Japanese aircraft carriers (Akagi, Kaga, Hiryu and Soryu) that participated in the Bombing of Darwin were later sunk during the Battle of Midway in June 1942. A memorial ceremony is held every year on 19 February at the Cenotaph in Darwin. (END)

The Soviet's dedicated sections of the 21st, 28th, 38th and 9th Army to the attack (765,000 men). They expected only two German divisions and the Romanian 3rd Army to oppose the operation (no more than 80,000 men). Due to poor intelligence, Soviet command was unaware of the level of German reinforcements entering the area.
The Wehrmacht had been preparing to re-initiate offensive level operations in the region under Operation Fredericus. Army Group South had received many reinforcements, taken from Army Group Center, meant to replenish units destroyed during the battle of Moscow. German mechanized forces were known, internally, to have substandard winter performance. As winter ended, weather conditions improved and unit combat effectiveness returned to a traditional level. This resulted in a twofold surprise to Soviet forces: They underestimated the size of German reserves, and their post-winter mobility.

By late February 1942 the Soviet winter offensive had pushed German forces back from Moscow on a broad front, to a stalemate in the Rzhev and Izium salients (shown as Isjum). Based on the German failure at Moscow, Soviet command lobbied for a new spring offensive to expand upon winter gains. The Izium bridgehead offensive, also known as the Barvenkovo Bulge, was to be committed in early May against a perceived weak-point in the German line near Kharkov. The Second Battle of Kharkov was a major Axis counter-offensive against this attack (conducted 12–28 May 1942).
The Soviet's dedicated sections of the 21st, 28th, 38th and 9th Army to the attack (765,000 men). They expected only two German divisions and the Romanian 3rd Army to oppose the operation (no more than 80,000 men). Due to poor intelligence, Soviet command was unaware of the level of German reinforcements entering the area.
The Wehrmacht had been preparing to re-initiate offensive level operations in the region under Operation Fredericus. Army Group South had received many reinforcements, taken from Army Group Center, meant to replenish units destroyed during the battle of Moscow. German mechanized forces were known, internally, to have substandard winter performance. As winter ended, weather conditions improved and unit combat effectiveness returned to a traditional level. This resulted in a twofold surprise to Soviet forces: They underestimated the size of German reserves, and their post-winter mobility.

The Normandie was a luxury French liner which had found itself in New York when France collapsed. It was being converted to a troop ship when it caught fire on 9 February 1942 and sank as a result. The fire was caused by accident as sparks from welding caught fire and then ignited inflammable materials. There was an efficient fire fighting system on board but it was disconnected during the conversion process. However such was the paranoia about spies and the underworld, the feeling was that it could have been caused by a Nazi sympathiser or by the mafia. The result of the Normandie fire was to increase co-operation between the US authorities and organised crime which lead to further and deeper co-operation between the two at the time of the invasion of Sicily.

In 1942, Darwin was a small town with limited civil and military infrastructure. Due to its strategic position in northern Australia the Royal Australian Navy and Royal Australian Air Force had constructed bases near the town in the 1930s and early years of WW2. Darwin's pre-war population was 5,800.
Following the outbreak of the Pacific War in early December 1941, Darwin's defences were strengthened. In line with plans developed before the war, several Australian Army and RAAF units stationed in the town were also sent to the Netherlands East Indies to strengthen the defences of the islands of Ambon and Timor. In the two months before the air raids, all but 2,000 civilians were evacuated from the town. Japanese submarines I-121 and I123 laid mines off Darwin in January 1942.
By mid-February 1942 Darwin had become an important Allied base (included American, British and Canadian forces) for the defence of the NEI. The Japanese had captured Ambon, Borneo and Celebes between December 1941 and early-February 1942. Landings on Timor were scheduled for 20 February, and an invasion of Java was planned to take place shortly afterwards. In order to protect these landings from Allied interference, the Japanese military command decided to conduct a major air raid on Darwin. On 10 February a Japanese reconnaissance aircraft overflew the town, and identified an aircraft carrier (actually the seaplane tender USS Langley), five destroyers and 21 merchant ships in Darwin Harbour as well as 30 aircraft at the town's two airfields.
After the massive 19 February 1942 Japanese raid, the Northern Territory and parts of Western Australia's north were bombed 62 more times between 4 March 1942 and 12 November 1943. One of the heaviest attacks took place on 16 June 1942 when a large Japanese force set fire to the oil fuel tanks around the harbour and inflicted severe damage to the vacant banks, stores and railway yards. The Allied navies largely abandoned the naval base at Darwin after the initial 19 February attack, dispersing most of their forces to Brisbane, Fremantle and other smaller ports. Conversely, Allied air commanders launched a major build-up in the Darwin area, building more airfields and deploying many squadrons.
The four Japanese aircraft carriers (Akagi, Kaga, Hiryu and Soryu) that participated in the Bombing of Darwin were later sunk during the Battle of Midway in June 1942. A memorial ceremony is held every year on 19 February at the Cenotaph in Darwin. (END)

Following the outbreak of the Pacific War in early December 1941, Darwin's defences were strengthened. In line with plans developed before the war, several Australian Army and RAAF units stationed in the town were also sent to the Netherlands East Indies to strengthen the defences of the islands of Ambon and Timor. In the two months before the air raids, all but 2,000 civilians were evacuated from the town. Japanese submarines I-121 and I123 laid mines off Darwin in January 1942.
By mid-February 1942 Darwin had become an important Allied base (included American, British and Canadian forces) for the defence of the NEI. The Japanese had captured Ambon, Borneo and Celebes between December 1941 and early-February 1942. Landings on Timor were scheduled for 20 February, and an invasion of Java was planned to take place shortly afterwards. In order to protect these landings from Allied interference, the Japanese military command decided to conduct a major air raid on Darwin. On 10 February a Japanese reconnaissance aircraft overflew the town, and identified an aircraft carrier (actually the seaplane tender USS Langley), five destroyers and 21 merchant ships in Darwin Harbour as well as 30 aircraft at the town's two airfields.
After the massive 19 February 1942 Japanese raid, the Northern Territory and parts of Western Australia's north were bombed 62 more times between 4 March 1942 and 12 November 1943. One of the heaviest attacks took place on 16 June 1942 when a large Japanese force set fire to the oil fuel tanks around the harbour and inflicted severe damage to the vacant banks, stores and railway yards. The Allied navies largely abandoned the naval base at Darwin after the initial 19 February attack, dispersing most of their forces to Brisbane, Fremantle and other smaller ports. Conversely, Allied air commanders launched a major build-up in the Darwin area, building more airfields and deploying many squadrons.
The four Japanese aircraft carriers (Akagi, Kaga, Hiryu and Soryu) that participated in the Bombing of Darwin were later sunk during the Battle of Midway in June 1942. A memorial ceremony is held every year on 19 February at the Cenotaph in Darwin. (END)

By late February 1942 the Soviet winter offensive had pushed German forces back from Moscow on a broad front, to a stalemate in the Rzhev and Izium salients (shown as Isjum). Based on the German failure at Moscow, Soviet command lobbied for a new spring offensive to expand upon winter gains. The Izium bridgehead offensive, also known as the Barvenkovo Bulge, was to be committed in early May against a perceived weak-point in the German line near Kharkov. The Second Battle of Kharkov was a major Axis counter-offensive against this attack (conducted 12–28 May 1942).
The Soviet's dedicated sections of the 21st, 28th, 38th and 9th Army to the attack (765,000 men). They expected only two German divisions and the Romanian 3rd Army to oppose the operation (no more than 80,000 men). Due to poor intelligence, Soviet command was unaware of the level of German reinforcements entering the area.
The Wehrmacht had been preparing to re-initiate offensive level operations in the region under Operation Fredericus. Army Group South had received many reinforcements, taken from Army Group Center, meant to replenish units destroyed during the battle of Moscow. German mechanized forces were known, internally, to have substandard winter performance. As winter ended, weather conditions improved and unit combat effectiveness returned to a traditional level. This resulted in a twofold surprise to Soviet forces: They underestimated the size of German reserves, and their post-winter mobility.
The Red Army launched it's offensive on May 12th, from the Volchansk and Barvenkovo salients. After initial success, Soviet forces were defeated by a surprise double envelopment attack against the Donets region. The attack was committed by remnants of the German 6th Army and multiple elements of Army Group South: Including the 1st, 3rd and 4th Panzer Army, the Romanian 3rd Army, 3rd Panzer Corps and the Hungarian 2nd Army. The German operation pivoted on the incorporation of reconstituted units, reinforcements from Army Group Center and air support from the Luftwaffe's Fliegerkorps VII and the Kampfgeschwader bombing wings #27,51,55 and 76.
Soviet forces were surprised by the speed and coordination of the German attack and could not sustain their operation and repel flanking units simultaneously. The Luftwaffe achieved air superiority on May 15th allowing German command to attach bombing wings from Army Group Center to support the attack. This forced the Soviet 28th and 38th Army into a defensive mode and stalled their advance at Krasnohrad (shown as Krasnograd). Once the initial attack failed, Soviet forces attempted to retreat eastward toward the Donets River, but were blocked by advanced guard formations and forward security elements from 3rd Panzer Corps and a Hungarian 2nd Army mechanized contingency. Intense fighting continued into late May as German forces tightened the encirclement. Soviet commanders noted the severe casualties Luftwaffe attacks inflicted on trapped soldiers. By May 30th, the Red Army had lost 277,190 of 765,300 men (this number includes captured). Axis forces lost only 20,000 of 350,000 men; this was considered a great success and decisive victory.
The second battle of Kharkov was one of the last successful German operations on the eastern front. The majority of subsequent successes were defensive victories.

The Normandie was a luxury French liner which had found itself in New York when France collapsed. It was being converted to a troop ship when it caught fire on 9 February 1942 and sank as a result. The fire was caused by accident as sparks from welding caught fire and then ignited inflammable materials. There was an efficient fire fighting system on board but it was disconnected during the conversion process. However such was the paranoia about spies and the underworld, the feeling was that it could have been caused by a Nazi sympathiser or by the mafia. The result of the Normandie fire was to increase co-operation between the US authorities and organised crime which lead to further and deeper co-operation between the two at the time of the invasion of Sicily.

On Feb 14, 1942, Bukit Brown Municipal Cemetery, Seh Ong Cemetery, Sime Road and Adam Road were all aspects of one of a WWII battlefield in one of the last battles between the Imperial Japanese Army and British Empire forces before the fall of Singapore. On June 17, 2012, Jon Cooper, a battlefield archaeologist, led two dozen participants on a tour of the key sites in an event organised by All Things Bukit Brown, to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Fall of Singapore on Feb 15, 1942 and raise awareness of the historic value of a place once known as "Cemetery Hill" in war maps. Jon will lead another tour in July, either on the 22nd or 29th. Synopsis:
On the evening of Sunday 15th February 1942, after the heaviest artillery barrage of the Singapore campaign, Colonel Ichikawa's 3rd Battalion, 11thRegiment, 5th Division IJA charged across Lornie Road, up Sime Road, and then left along Kheam Hock road in a flanking attack on Cemetery Hill, as Colonel Shimada's tank company on the golf course provided covering fire.
Defending Bukit Brown were the 4th Battalion of the Suffolk Regiment, comprised mostly of part-time territorials and inexperienced recruits, shipped from the flat fields of Eastern England to the humid tropical jungles of Singapore.

On Feb 14, 1942, Bukit Brown Municipal Cemetery, Seh Ong Cemetery, Sime Road and Adam Road were all aspects of one of a WWII battlefield in one of the last battles between the Imperial Japanese Army and British Empire forces before the fall of Singapore.
On June 17, 2012, Jon Cooper, a battlefield archaeologist, led two dozen participants on a tour of the key sites in an event organised by All Things Bukit Brown, to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Fall of Singapore on Feb 15, 1942 and raise awareness of the historic value of a place once known as "Cemetery Hill" in war maps.

Synopsis:
On the evening of Sunday 15th February 1942, after the heaviest artillery barrage of the Singapore campaign, Colonel Ichikawa's 3rd Battalion, 11thRegiment, 5th Division IJA charged across Lornie Road, up Sime Road, and then left along Kheam Hock road in a flanking attack on Cemetery Hill, as Colonel Shimada's tank company on the golf course provided covering fire.
Defending Bukit Brown were the 4th Battalion of the Suffolk Regiment, comprised mostly of part-time territorials and inexperienced recruits, shipped from the flat fields of Eastern England to the humid tropical jungles of Singapore.

By late February 1942 the Soviet winter offensive had pushed German forces back from Moscow on a broad front, to a stalemate in the Rzhev and Izium salients (shown as Isjum). Based on the German failure at Moscow, Soviet command lobbied for a new spring offensive to expand upon winter gains. The Izium bridgehead offensive, also known as the Barvenkovo Bulge, was to be committed in early May against a perceived weak-point in the German line near Kharkov. The Second Battle of Kharkov was a major Axis counter-offensive against this attack (conducted 12–28 May 1942).
The Soviet's dedicated sections of the 21st, 28th, 38th and 9th Army to the attack (765,000 men). They expected only two German divisions and the Romanian 3rd Army to oppose the operation (no more than 80,000 men). Due to poor intelligence, Soviet command was unaware of the level of German reinforcements entering the area.
The Wehrmacht had been preparing to re-initiate offensive level operations in the region under Operation Fredericus. Army Group South had received many reinforcements, taken from Army Group Center, meant to replenish units destroyed during the battle of Moscow. German mechanized forces were known, internally, to have substandard winter performance. As winter ended, weather conditions improved and unit combat effectiveness returned to a traditional level. This resulted in a twofold surprise to Soviet forces: They underestimated the size of German reserves, and their post-winter mobility.
The Red Army launched it's offensive on May 12th, from the Volchansk and Barvenkovo salients. After initial success, Soviet forces were defeated by a surprise double envelopment attack against the Donets region. The attack was committed by remnants of the German 6th Army and multiple elements of Army Group South: Including the 1st, 3rd and 4th Panzer Army, the Romanian 3rd Army, 3rd Panzer Corps and the Hungarian 2nd Army. The German operation pivoted on the incorporation of reconstituted units, reinforcements from Army Group Center and air support from the Luftwaffe's Fliegerkorps VII and the Kampfgeschwader bombing wings #27,51,55 and 76.
Soviet forces were surprised by the speed and coordination of the German attack and could not sustain their operation and repel flanking units simultaneously. The Luftwaffe achieved air superiority on May 15th allowing German command to attach bombing wings from Army Group Center to support the attack. This forced the Soviet 28th and 38th Army into a defensive mode and stalled their advance at Krasnohrad (shown as Krasnograd). Once the initial attack failed, Soviet forces attempted to retreat eastward toward the Donets River, but were blocked by advanced guard formations and forward security elements from 3rd Panzer Corps and a Hungarian 2nd Army mechanized contingency. Intense fighting continued into late May as German forces tightened the encirclement. Soviet commanders noted the severe casualties Luftwaffe attacks inflicted on trapped soldiers. By May 30th, the Red Army had lost 277,190 of 765,300 men (this number includes captured). Axis forces lost only 20,000 of 350,000 men; this was considered a great success and decisive victory.
The second battle of Kharkov was one of the last successful German operations on the eastern front. The majority of subsequent successes were defensive victories.

By mid-November 1942, the Germans had pushed the Soviet defenders back at great cost into narrow zones generally along the west bank of the Volga River.
On 19 November 1942, the Red Army launched Operation Uranus, a two-pronged attack targeting the weaker Romanian and Hungarian forces protecting the German 6th Army's flanks. The Axis forces on the flanks were overrun and the 6th Army was cut off and surrounded in the Stalingrad area. Adolf Hitler ordered that the army stay in Stalingrad and make no attempt to break out; instead, attempts were made to supply the army by air and to break the encirclement from the outside. Heavy fighting continued for another two months. By the beginning of February 1943, the Axis forces in Stalingrad had exhausted their ammunition and food. The remaining elements of the 6th Army surrendered. The battle lasted five months, one week, and three days.

The film aims to explain British culture and character. Starting with the ubiquitous pub visit, the film breezes through geography lessons, food, entertainment and traveling on the British Home Front. It was made by the Ministry of Information (United Kingdom) with the assistance of the US Office of War Information. Remarkably the film is not a patronizing propaganda piece like so many other similar productions made during the war.
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND / CONTEXT
The United States and Great Britain have been firm allies for a century. Their mutually beneficial relationship particularly deepened during World War 2, when the circumstances of war brought hundreds of thousands of Americans through the British Isles.
The United States entered the war in December 1941, and American ground forces arrived in Belfast the following month. By February 1942 members of the U.S. Eighth Air Force were on the ground, building towards a strategic bombing campaign. American and British naval and air units cooperated in fierce battles for the control of the Atlantic. The U.S. troop build-up progressed quickly at first to support Operation Bolero, the buildup for a proposed invasion of France. Bolero was suspended amidst concerns that a 1942 or 1943 cross-channel invasion would be premature, and troops were diverted to North Africa and the Mediterranean. In the second half of 1943 the American buildup in Great Britain resumed in earnest.
The United Kingdom served as a critical base for American operations throughout the war. U.S. troops embarked from there for the invasion of North Africa in November 1942, and for subsequent operations in the Mediterranean. American units participating in the Combined Bomber Offensive and the air war over Europe were based in England. Great Britain served as the training ground and staging area for Operation Overlord, the massive amphibious invasion of Europe through Normandy on June 6, 1944 – D-Day. Over 1,600,000 American servicemen and women were in Great Britain as the invasion was launched. Numbers dwindled thereafter, but as late as April 30, 1945 there were still over 224,000 airmen, 109,000 communications zone troops, and 100,000 in hospitals or preparing to serve as individual replacements.
At the height of the American presence in Great Britain, American servicemen and women were ubiquitous through much of the island nation. They built or occupied vast encampments of their own, but also spent time in local pubs and establishments, toured the countryside, and befriended British families. Both nations established impressive programs to bring the two cultures together amicably, and to accommodate and entertain the visitors. Tens of thousands of American servicemen married English women, bringing them back to the United States after the war ended. American Forces Radio Network broadcast from the United Kingdom, bringing music and news from “home” to the British air waves. American Red Cross Service Clubs opened to entertain American servicemen off their bases. Pieces of American life and culture were seen and felt across the United Kingdom throughout the war, and Americans in turn took pieces of British life and culture home with them.

In the second half of 1943 the American buildup in Great Britain resumed in earnest.
The United Kingdom served as a critical base for American operations throughout the war. U.S. troops embarked from there for the invasion of North Africa in November 1942, and for subsequent operations in the Mediterranean. American units participating in the Combined Bomber Offensive and the air war over Europe were based in England. Great Britain served as the training ground and staging area for Operation Overlord, the massive amphibious invasion of Europe through Normandy on June 6, 1944 – D-Day. Over 1,600,000 American servicemen and women were in Great Britain as the invasion was launched. Numbers dwindled thereafter, but as late as April 30, 1945 there were still over 224,000 airmen, 109,000 communications zone troops, and 100,000 in hospitals or preparing to serve as individual replacements.
At the height of the American presence in Great Britain, American servicemen and women were ubiquitous through much of the island nation. They built or occupied vast encampments of their own, but also spent time in local pubs and establishments, toured the countryside, and befriended British families. Both nations established impressive programs to bring the two cultures together amicably, and to accommodate and entertain the visitors. Tens of thousands of American servicemen married English women, bringing them back to the United States after the war ended. American Forces Radio Network broadcast from the United Kingdom, bringing music and news from “home” to the British air waves. American Red Cross Service Clubs opened to entertain American servicemen off their bases. Pieces of American life and culture were seen and felt across the United Kingdom throughout the war, and Americans in turn took pieces of British life and culture home with them.

VIII Fighter Command was the fighter arm of Eighth Air Force in the World War II European Theater. Its primary mission was to escort the heavy bombers of VIII Bomber Command to their targets in Occupied Europe, providing protection against Luftwaffe interceptors.
It was formed at Selfridge Field, Michigan in February 1942. In May, the headquarters moved to England to conduct combat operations over Occupied Europe. After the end of the European War in May 1945, VIII Fighter Command took part in the occupation of Germany until May 1946 while simultaneously coordinating its own demobilization. It inactivated in March 1946 at RAF Honington, the last Royal Air Force station used by the USAAF to be returned to the British Ministry of Defence.,,
The first P-47C Thunderbolts arrived in England in late December 1942, and equipped the 4th Fighter Group which somewhat reluctantly traded in their Spitfires for the type. P-47Cs also reequipped the 82nd, 83rd, and 84th Squadrons of the 78th Fighter Group. P-47Cs were also supplied to the 56th Fighter Group which left their P-47Bs back home in the States when they transferred to England. Engine and radio problems caused some delays, but the first operational sorties began on March 10, 1943, and consisted of high-altitude escort duties and fighter sweeps. The first encounter with German fighters came on April 15 when the P-47Cs of the 335th Squadron shot down three German fighters for a loss of three of its own.
The high-altitude performance of the P-47C was far superior to anything the Luftwaffe could put up against it, but at low and medium altitudes the P-47C could not match the maneuverability and climb rates of its opponents. However, the P-47C could out-dive just about anything in the sky, and many a Thunderbolt saved itself from a sticky situation by using its superior diving performance to break off combat at will when it proved necessary to do so...
With arrival of the first P-51 groups, the strategic air war began shifting in the Allies' favor. The P-51 Mustang first entered squadron service in Europe with the British in early 1942. The Allison V-1710-engined P-51A (Mustang I) was successful in RAF service, although the British found the aircraft's performance inadequate at higher altitudes. Rolls-Royce engineers rapidly realized that by equipping the Mustang with a Rolls-Royce Merlin engine with its two speed, two stage supercharger, performance would substantially improve. Also, by using a four-bladed propeller, rather than the three-bladed one used on the P-51A, the performance was again greatly improved. The XP-51B achieved a level speed of 441 mph at 29,800 feet, over 100 mph faster than the Allison-engined P-51A at the same altitude. At all altitudes, the rate of climb was approximately doubled...
During 1943, Nazi Germany produced 18,953 combat aircraft (Axis total 19,584) compared to 101,639 produced by the Allies. During 1944 the numbes were 33,804 vs 125,718. During 1945 the numerical difference was even greater, at 6,987 vs 60,494... By mid 1944, most of the Luftwaffe's most experienced fighter pilots in the west were killed...
At war's end the 8th's fighters had claimed 5,280 enemy aircraft shot down and 4,100 more claimed destroyed on the ground. Losses were 2,113 in total. Some 260 VIII FC pilots became aces, each with five or more aerial victories, though the command also recognized planes destroyed on the ground...
