The sanctuary, known as the Altis, consists of an unordered arrangement of various buildings. Enclosed within the temenos (sacred enclosure) are the Temple of Hera (or Heraion/Heraeum) and Temple of Zeus, the Pelopion and the area of the altar, where the sacrifices were made. To the north of the sanctuary can be found the Prytaneion and the Philippeion, as well as the array of treasuries representing the various city states. The Metroon lies to the south of these treasuries, with the Echo Stoa to the East. To the south of the sanctuary is the South Stoa and the Bouleuterion, whereas the West side houses the Palaestra, the workshop of Pheidias, the Gymnasion and the Leonidaion.

The Statue of Zeus at Olympia, in southern Greece, was counted as one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World and was even singled out for the awe it inspired in all who beheld it. It was a monumental work of art – more than 40 feet tall, made of gold and ivory over a wooden framework – seated majestically on a cedar wood throne decorated with gold, ivory, ebony, and precious stones. The statue was created in a nearby workshop by the renowned sculptor Pheidias, who also sculpted the monumental statue of Athena in the Parthenon. Although the statue was lost by the fifth century A.D., we have a good idea of its general appearance from coins bearing its likeness, mentions in ancient literature, and Roman copies that it may have inspired. We also have intriguing archaeological evidence of Pheidias' workshop and from the temple itself. In this lecture I will discuss the statue and its sculptor, the techniques of manufacture, what we know the statue's history and its fame across the classical world, and its place in the religious traditions of the Greeks.

The Archaeological Museum of Olympia (SEP 2013) is one of the great museums of Greece in Olympia, Elis, and houses artifacts found in the archaeological site of Ancient Olympia.
The museum was built opposite the excavation site in a valley northwest of the Kronion hill. Designed by Patroklos Karantinos, it was officially opened in 1982. One of the best known exhibits is the Nike of Paeonius, which is featured on the medals awarded during the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens.

Olympia, Greece
Olympia (Greek: Ὀλυμπία; Ancient Greek: [ˈolympia]; Modern Greek: [oliˈbia] Olympía), a sanctuary of ancient Greece in Elis on the Peloponnese peninsula, is known for having been the site of the Olympic Games in classical times.
The Olympic Games were held every four years throughout Classical Antiquity, from the 8th century BC to the 4th century AD. The first Olympic Games were in honor of Zeus.

The Statue of Zeus at Olympia, in southern Greece, was counted as one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World and was even singled out for the awe it inspired in all who beheld it. It was a monumental work of art – more than 40 feet tall, made of gold and ivory over a wooden framework – seated majestically on a cedar wood throne decorated with gold, ivory, ebony, and precious stones. The statue was created in a nearby workshop by the renowned sculptor Pheidias, who also sculpted the monumental statue of Athena in the Parthenon. Although the statue was lost by the fifth century A.D., we have a good idea of its general appearance from coins bearing its likeness, mentions in ancient literature, and Roman copies that it may have inspired. We also have intriguing archaeological evidence of Pheidias' workshop and from the temple itself. In this lecture I will discuss the statue and its sculptor, the techniques of manufacture, what we know the statue's history and its fame across the classical world, and its place in the religious traditions of the Greeks.

The museum was built opposite the excavation site in a valley northwest of the Kronion hill. Designed by Patroklos Karantinos, it was officially opened in 1982. One of the best known exhibits is the Nike of Paeonius, which is featured on the medals awarded during the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens.

Well, good afternoon from sunny Athens. We are currently exploring the Greek capital. We recently actually spent a few days traveling around Meteora and now we're finishing up our trip here in Athens. We've got two full days to explore the city which isn't a lot of time but we're going to try to do our best.
Our first stop was one of the most recognized sights in Athens - the Parthenon, which was dedicated to the goddess Athena who was seen as the patron of Athens.
After sunset we lingered atop Mount Lycabettus for some night views of the city before taking the funicular down to the bottom. Seeing the Acropolis all lit up at night was a pretty cool sight!
Next up we visited the Temple of Zeus which once housed the statue of Zeus, and was considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
When it comes to shopping, there are a few different options. We made our way to Monastiraki, which is one of the principal shopping districts in Athens. Here we visited both the Flea Market and the antique shops in the area.
The Agora was the central spot in ancient Greek city-states, and it is where people gathered.
So we are wrapping up our time here in Athens. Any surprises or final thoughts to share? Yeah, something that really surprised me were just the amount of stray animals that I saw on the streets.
I also thought there was really good dining options as well. We had a number of really good Greek meals and also some really good International food too.
Final thoughts, I think this is a really underrated capital in Europe. A lot like Warsaw in Poland so if you have an opportunity to visit Athens in Greece definitely do so.
So what did you think of Athens? Well, I thought it was a really cool city and I actually had a great time here. It kind of reminded me a little bit of Tel Aviv with the Mediterranean feel but also Berlin because it is very artsy and gritty. So it's a really cool place to check out. Great food, lots of attractions. You have a mix of antiquity with urban.

How To Conquer Greece Without Launching 1000 Ships
1. Learning to Love a Malaka
Although the word Malaka isn’t “nice” sometimes it’s meant to be friendly. Malaka means “jerkoff” but in Greece we use it as a term of endearment. People might say, “Hey jerkoff,” but don’t worry. You’ll be able to tell if they mean it by their tone of voice. Use your better judgment and go with the flow.
2. Most everything closes at noon for a few hours. No soup for you.
In Spain its called “siesta” and they have it in Greece too. In some of the more touristy areas you’ll find everything stays open but if your visit takes you off the beaten path they will most likely be closed in the afternoon. Make sure you make that trip to the market and get your errands done in the morning and spend your “siesta” down at the beach.
3. Dramamine Taxis
Greece has over 6,000 islands but only 250 of them are inhabited. Although some of the islands have airports most don’t and you’ll have to take a ferry to visit them. Ferries will range in cost from 10 to 75 EUR with travel out of Athens being more expensive. Airfare will range between 100 – 300 EUR depending on where you’re visiting, what time of year it is, and possibly how much you slip the guy booking your tickets.
4. Avoid Mykonos if you’re on a budget.
The clubs stay open till the morning, the beaches are gorgeous, and the bar is always pumping out music. Along with the great nightlife and romantic scenery comes a very hefty price point. Mykonos is not the island to visit if you’re on a budget. Drinks on this island are just as overpriced as they are in New York City, 12 -15 EUR a pop. Dinner will run you at least 50 EUR and hotel rooms start at around $250 EUR a night. One of your suitcases should probably just be filled with cash.
5. Hypochondriacs rejoice! Antibiotics can be purchased over the counter.
If you’re like my mom you’ll want to stock up on over the counter antibiotics while you’re in Greece. You don’t need a prescription in Greece to buy them and they’re stronger then the stuff the pharmacist gives you here (America for me, I’m not sure where in the world you are). I would like to say that you shouldn’t take medicine if you don’t need it. Antibiotics should only be taken if you have an infection so please consult with your doctor before self medicating. And for the love of all that is holy take the entire cycle even if you start to feel better, finish the cycle! Otherwise we’re just building antibacterial resistant superbugs that are going to wipe us all out. But no, really, enjoy your trip.
6. Food in Greece is amazing on any budget
Greece is known for its seafood, olives, honey, feta cheese, and healthy veggies. Even if you’re traveling on a budget and can’t afford to eat at restaurants (which usually run anywhere between 15 – 50 EUR a meal) you can grab Gyro and Suvlaki on the street. They’ll usually run 2 – 3 EUR each and they’re just as filling. Vegetarians: just learn to pronounce the word “spanakopita” before you leave and the cheese and spinach pies will get you right at about the same price point.
7. No one in Greece tips. But if you do you will be treated like a god (lowercase god that is).
In general people do not tip in Greece as wait staff gets paid a living wage, but they will treat you like a king if you do. At the beach bar I usually give them 3 to 5 euros throughout the day and they make sure my drink is always full. A EUR or two goes a long way. If you’re looking for hospitality in Greece, throw in a smile and you are golden.
8. Visit before or after the peak season
End of summer in Greece (end of July to end of August) is very expensive. During that time in Greece the tourists outnumber the citizens! Because of this prices on hotel accommodations, flights, and ferries are inflated. Visiting before or after peak season can save you a lot of money. Consider visiting in June or September so you can still enjoy the beach.

10. Find the Bouzoukia for the real Greek night life experience.
Most of Greece’s nightlife is now very mainstream. The Bouzoukia is where you will experience live Greek music, dancing, and flower throwing. There is usually a headliner like Anna Vissi (think the Greek equivalent to Madonna) if you are in Athens but you can find a cheap alternative in some of the smaller towns and islands with unknown singers.

The Cyclades are also known as The Pearls Of Greece and it seems as though the gods have scattered a handful of beautiful pearls into the deep blue Aegean Sea. In ancient times they were also known as The Islands Of Light because Apollo, the God of Light and Learning, was born here and also worshipped on the islands. Santorini is the most southerly of the Cyclades Islands and the legendary location of the mythical lost island of Atlantis and also a breathtaking island paradise of rock, lava, sea and light.Crete is the ‘Island Of Light’ and the birthplace of Zeus. Heraklion is the capital of the largest and most southerly of the Greek islands on which a highly developed culture has existed for four thousand years. Although Greece is the home of ancient gods, birthplace of European civilisation and a country of great warriors and philosophers it is also a country of many islands with tiny villages and white houses, a deep blue sea and almost constant sunshine.Athens is a lively city set in historic surroundings. Unique among all other Greek temples is the Acropolis whose imposing appearance and artistic decoration signified the great influence and power of ancient Athens. Six female figures, the Karyatides, support the southern hall of the Ionic Temple of Erechtheion that stands on sacred ground close to the main temple. The imposing Mitrópolis is the main Greek Orthodox cathedral in Athens. A total of four architects designed this cathedral whose walls comprise the remains of no less than seventy former sacred buildings. The Cyclades Islands are situated in the middle of the Southern Aegean that like a magic circle flows around its former centre, the sacred island of Delos, Mykonos. For centuries this picturesque former pirate village in the middle of Cyclades group of islands has been the meeting place for artists, V.I.P.’s and the international glitterati. The Cyclades are also known as The Pearls Of Greece and it seems as though the gods have scattered a handful of beautiful pearls into the deep blue Aegean Sea. In ancient times they were also known as The Islands Of Light because Apollo, the God of Light and Learning, was born here and also worshipped on the islands. Santorini is the most southerly of the Cyclades Islands and the legendary location of the mythical lost island of Atlantis and also a breathtaking island paradise of rock, lava, sea and light.Crete is the ‘Island Of Light’ and the birthplace of Zeus. Heraklion is the capital of the largest and most southerly of the Greek islands on which a highly developed culture has existed for four thousand years. It’s no wonder that in these magnificent islands in the Aegean numerous gods, knights and tourists have always found much good fortune and enchantment!

Things to do in Santorini:
1. A stroll down Oia. Enjoy the sunset and Amoudi Bay and have dinner there
2. A stroll down Fira. Enjoy the magnificent view of the glistening caldera. We don't recommend the cable car. Try lunch at Mama's House
3. Wine Museum. Santorini has a selection of wine museum that you can chose from and enjoy.
4. Kamari beach. Buy a beer from the local market and enjoy this beautiful black beach
5. Picnic at Pyrgos. Pyrgos is the highest point of the island Santorini. Stop by a beautiful restaurant for coffee and enjoy the panaromic view of the island from here.
6. Sunset at Akrotiri lighthouse
7. Dinner at Metaxi Mas in Exo Gonia
8. Play with the cats of Santorini
9. Enjoy a dip in your private jacuzzi or pool (a lot of hotels come with these in Oia and Fira)
10. Stop by the pretty blue dome churches and take a moment to enjoy it's beauty

PIGS is a term coined by the business and financial press as a way to refer to Portugal, Italy, Greece and Spain during their current financial plight.
What started as a pejorative label used by neoconservatives, mainly from English speaking countries, was eventually taken up for some time without any qualms by the media.
Excessively high levels of public and private debt, government deficits, a property bubble and, generally speaking, very disappointing political and economic policies, have put the PIGS in the crosshairs. It is alleged that the PIGS won’t be able to bear the pressure of sharing a common currency with their stronger European brethren. In this analysis, the forced exit of at least some of the PIGS from the Euro would lead soon to the demise of the European currency.
Yet, how much truth is there to this?
I have attempted to illustrate the stereotypes brought up by the term PIGS. In other words, what we would see if we were to translate into images the articles we read in the financial press. This is how I imagine economists see us.
The result is a collection of clichés, both true and incomplete. The same way a travel guide carefully avoids anything seemingly unattractive, this book shows much of what we find embarrassing, oftentimes rightly, and at times unfairly. Either way, it’s just an artifice with which to highlight a specific aspect of life in the PIGS. In the end, what stands out the most is the glaring absence in these images of all that is positive, beautiful and promising in our countries – and that still endures.

During the Easter Holidays, the Classics and RP departments joined together for their quadrennial trip to Greece. Led by an enthusiastic team consisting of Mrs ...
During the Easter Holidays, the Classics and RP departments joined together for their quadrennial trip to Greece. Led by an enthusiastic team consisting of Mrs Steven, Mme Holdsworth, Mr Jones and Mr Verry, thirty boys spanning Years 7-Sixth Form departed from QEH at 4am on a Saturday morning. After a hectic day of travel and a well-earned rest, we were introduced to our erudite tour guide, Maria, who would accompany us around the most famous landmarks of Mainland Greece and The Peloponnese.
Over the next six days, we visited a vast number of sights including The Oracle at Delphi, the home of the Olympic Games at Olympia, the incredible theatre at Epidaurus (you can whisper in the orchestra and be heard by the entire crowd), the dramatic Corinth canal, the Acropolis of Athens, several archaeological museums and a pottery workshop where we made ancient-style dolls. On top of all this, we had free time to explore Delphi, Tolon and Olympia by night and to take part in mind-bending quizzes organised by the teachers. Greece is known for its food, and we had the chance to try some amazing fresh fish and local delicacies such as baklava.
The trip was a tremendous success and we all thoroughly enjoyed it.

The sanctuary, known as the Altis, consists of an unordered arrangement of various buildings. Enclosed within the temenos (sacred enclosure) are the Temple of Hera (or Heraion/Heraeum) and Temple of Zeus, the Pelopion and the area of the altar, where the sacrifices were made. The hippodrome and later stadium were also nearby. To the north of the sanctuary can be found the Prytaneion and the Philippeion, as well as the array of treasuries representing the various city states. The Metroon lies to the south of these treasuries, with the Echo Stoa to the East. To the south of the sanctuary is the South Stoa and the Bouleuterion, whereas the West side houses the Palaestra, the workshop of Pheidias, the Gymnasion and the Leonidaion.

Great Wonders: The Statue of Zeus at Olympia
The Statue of Zeus at Olympia, in southern Greece, was counted as one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World and was even singled out for the awe it inspired in all who beheld it. It was a monumental work of art – more than 40 feet tall, made of gold and ivory over a wooden framework – seated majestically on a cedar wood throne decorated with gold, ivory, ebony, and precious stones. The statue was created in a nearby workshop by the renowned sculptor Pheidias, who also sculpted the monumental statue of Athena in the Parthenon. Although the statue was lost by the fifth century A.D., we have a good idea of its general appearance from coins bearing its likeness, mentions in ancient literature, and Roman copies that it may have inspired. The Archaeological Museum of Olympia (SEP 2013) is one of the great museums of Greece in Olympia, Elis, and houses artifacts found in the archaeological site of Ancient Olympia. The museum was built opposite the excavation site in a valley northwest of the Kronion hill. Designed by Patroklos Karantinos, it was officially opened in 1982. One of the best known exhibits is the Nike of Paeonius, which is featured on the medals awarded during the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens.
