Today Skip Saylor will be covering a very interesting subject "How to become a studio musician"
Part 1:
The path to becoming a session musician is not very easy, especially in today's market. With studios closing down and being auctioned off,
it is still possible to make a decent living being a session musician but rules are changing, so we have to be on it!

I will be sharing my knowledge and experience to help you on your journey and I am really hoping that my advice will guide you along the way!
There are 3 common ways to getting gigs through:
- 1 Producers
- 2 Bands/songwriters
- 3 Internet
Now lets talk about each one of them in detail! Producers are people who make records come to life, they range from executives in 3 piece suits to an engineer with a home studio. From my experience, the home studio producers will give you much more work than a big record label, of course for a much smaller amount of money. You will likely find that these homegrown producers will most often refer you to bigger and better paying gigs, as they are always working with different musicians constantly, the way to find these producers is very simple; they are everywhere! I found my first session on craigslist and did a lot of work for free, before the money started to come in. You can find a list of local producers and just send them an email with your samples and wait for a reply, it might take a while to get started, but don't give up because eventually someone will come through.
When I moved to Los Angeles I got my hands on a list of local producers in my area and I remember sending more than a thousand emails out, those connections I made 8 years ago still bring me money today!

Bands are a very good tool. My advice is, be in as many bands as you can. Play with as many musicians as you can. You never know who they can become and if they like you, guess what? They will refer you! Also it's a great way to meet producers when your band is recording an album or a demo. And who knows? That producer just might want you for work on other sessions! ALWAYS EXCHANGE CONTACTS WITH PEOPLE YOU ARE WORKING WITH AND STAY IN TOUCH! This is a little trick I've learned a long time ago. I always take a persons info, it doesn't matter who it is as long as it has to do with music and I always stay in touch. When I'm stuck in LA traffic going to my next gig I call alot people of people just to say "Hi" and see how they are the doing. It is very important to keep your relationships fresh, that way they will remember who I am and when something comes up they will call me! NEVER ASK FOR WORK!!! It is ok to say: "Let me know if something comes up" I personally dislike it when people are only calling me to get gigs, I will never refer them...
The Internet is one of the key aspects in getting gigs. It is very important to have a great web presence and be marketable. Imagine a grocery store and you are a customer, there are way too many brands and way too many products so how will you choose from brands that you don't know? Simply by looking at the product, so make sure your product stands out and looks impressive! Invest a little time and money and create a website that people will want to go to! The way you present yourself is crucial. YOU HAVE TO MAKE A GOOD FIRST IMPRESSION!

Use social networking to your benefit. You won't believe how many gigs I get through Facebook and Twitter. Social networking is a big part of the market and most of the time it allows you to work from your home studio and you are not limited to just the city you're in, the whole world is open for you! In the past I've gotten paying gigs in Germany, France, Russia and many other countries just by using social networking!
Go to guitar forums and communicate with other musicians! AND BE NICE!!! Last part is a big thing I've noticed that on guitar forums people are tend to be aggressive with each other and almost 90% have know it all syndrome, which is really funny to see! I read what people post about me and other guitar players and it is very funny to see some guy saying that he could be a star and he is amazing blah, blah, blah you get the point.I hope this little article will help you to get where you want to be and do what you want to do.

Do you want to be a session musician? There are too many musicians in the world being churned out like a factory with the same setting. Break the mold and think of a niche otherwise you risk being another faceless boring musician with the same videos of the same styles and its forgettable!
get out of the safe zone and have a niche, whether thats sight reading, upright bass playing, double bass drum specialist or just looking like a zombie! Think of how you can do something more than play the same clean funk groove on guitar..
By the time you get to the front of the que you will be too old and life will have past you by!

At the end use all this stuff to create any music u desire. Or... You even don't need any sampler. Just use your friends, give them gadgets and transform your party into gizmo-jam-session. Session musician
Session musicians, also called studio musicians, are instrumental and vocal performers who are available to work with others at live performances or recording sessions. Usually such musicians are not permanent members of a musical ensemble with the singers that they are accompanying and they often do not achieve individual fame in their own right as soloists or bandleaders. However, some backing bands of session musicians have become well known (e.g., The Wrecking Crew).
The term is applied to those working in all musical styles. Versatility is one of the most important skills of session musicians as they may have to perform in a range of different settings. Session musicians are expected to learn parts rapidly and be skilled in both sight reading and improvising chords or a bassline from a lead sheet or chord chart (or, in country music, a song chart in the Nashville number system).
Session musicians are used in any situation where musical skills are needed on a short-term basis. Typically session musicians are used by recording studios to provide backing tracks for other musicians for recording sessions and live performances; recording for advertising, film and television; or theatrical productions. Some session musicians formed a rhythm section that was repeatedly used for recordings.

Tim Pierce
Tim Pierce (born 1959 in Albuquerque) is an American session guitarist. He has worked for many well-known artists, such as Rick Springfield, Bruce Springsteen, Bon Jovi, Johnny Van Zant, Meat Loaf, Patty Smith, Joe Cocker, Michael Jackson,Joan Armatrading, Madonna, Tina Turner, Rod Stewart, Roger Waters,Ricky Martin, Celine Dion, Eric Clapton, The Doobie Brothers, Elton John, Alice Cooper,Shakira, Carlos Santana, Ozzy Osbourne, Vasco Rossi, Eros Ramazzotti, Jovanotti, Christina Aguilera, Tracy Chapman, Johnny Hallyday,Phil Collins and The Cheetah Girls.
Pierce's parents were not musicians, although his father used to play the trumpet in his youth, which Pierce did not know. He first tasted mainstream success in the early 1980s, when he began recording with Rick Springfield, who was experiencing a resurgence in popularity due to his hit "Jessie's Girl." In addition to playing on the studio recordings that followed, he also joined Springfield's touring band throughout the 80's and appears in several of Springfield's music videos from the era. Using this experience as a launching pad, he began extending his talents to other musicians, and he has since appeared as a session musician on countless albums.

For the 6th edition of the annual Volvo Art Session in Zurich flora&faunavisions; were invited by EQAL Visual Productions to design and produce a new spectacular multimedia format. Breaking with the conventions of the previous editions, which initially focused on urban art, we created a 40 minutes fusion of contemporary dance, projection, music and live-painting. Our set up offered a 13 meters wide and 7 meters high rear projection , front projection mapping on a white foiled Volvo V90, light design and a stepped public gallery for a perfect view. We collaborated with the internationally renowned choreographer duo Wang Ramirez, who performed with interactive motion content and music. The show was closed by a live-music act from renowned musician Pablo Nouvelle accompanied by live-painting from Swiss street artist Ata Bozaci and highlighted by generated visuals on the rear screen. The journey led towards the overlapping of digital and analog realms, generated by rhythm an motion. Furthermore, flora&faunavisions; was responsible for the visual design of the invitation material as well as the key visual for the overall day long event. The path to becoming a session musician is not very easy, especially in today's market. With studios closing down and being auctioned off,
it is still possible to make a decent living being a session musician but rules are changing, so we have to be on it!

I will be sharing my knowledge and experience to help you on your journey and I am really hoping that my advice will guide you along the way!
There are 3 common ways to getting gigs through:
- 1 Producers
- 2 Bands/songwriters
- 3 Internet
Now lets talk about each one of them in detail! Producers are people who make records come to life, they range from executives in 3 piece suits to an engineer with a home studio. From my experience, the home studio producers will give you much more work than a big record label, of course for a much smaller amount of money. You will likely find that these homegrown producers will most often refer you to bigger and better paying gigs, as they are always working with different musicians constantly, the way to find these producers is very simple; they are everywhere! I found my first session on craigslist and did a lot of work for free, before the money started to come in. You can find a list of local producers and just send them an email with your samples and wait for a reply, it might take a while to get started, but don't give up because eventually someone will come through.
When I moved to Los Angeles I got my hands on a list of local producers in my area and I remember sending more than a thousand emails out, those connections I made 8 years ago still bring me money today!

Bands are a very good tool. My advice is, be in as many bands as you can. Play with as many musicians as you can. You never know who they can become and if they like you, guess what? They will refer you! Also it's a great way to meet producers when your band is recording an album or a demo. And who knows? That producer just might want you for work on other sessions! ALWAYS EXCHANGE CONTACTS WITH PEOPLE YOU ARE WORKING WITH AND STAY IN TOUCH! This is a little trick I've learned a long time ago. I always take a persons info, it doesn't matter who it is as long as it has to do with music and I always stay in touch. When I'm stuck in LA traffic going to my next gig I call alot people of people just to say "Hi" and see how they are the doing. It is very important to keep your relationships fresh, that way they will remember who I am and when something comes up they will call me! NEVER ASK FOR WORK!!! It is ok to say: "Let me know if something comes up" I personally dislike it when people are only calling me to get gigs, I will never refer them...
The Internet is one of the key aspects in getting gigs. It is very important to have a great web presence and be marketable. Imagine a grocery store and you are a customer, there are way too many brands and way too many products so how will you choose from brands that you don't know? Simply by looking at the product, so make sure your product stands out and looks impressive! Invest a little time and money and create a website that people will want to go to! The way you present yourself is crucial. YOU HAVE TO MAKE A GOOD FIRST IMPRESSION!

Use social networking to your benefit. You won't believe how many gigs I get through Facebook and Twitter. Social networking is a big part of the market and most of the time it allows you to work from your home studio and you are not limited to just the city you're in, the whole world is open for you! In the past I've gotten paying gigs in Germany, France, Russia and many other countries just by using social networking!
Go to guitar forums and communicate with other musicians! AND BE NICE!!! Last part is a big thing I've noticed that on guitar forums people are tend to be aggressive with each other and almost 90% have know it all syndrome, which is really funny to see! I read what people post about me and other guitar players and it is very funny to see some guy saying that he could be a star and he is amazing blah, blah, blah you get the point.I hope this little article will help you to get where you want to be and do what you want to do.

For the 6th edition of the annual Volvo Art Session in Zurich flora&faunavisions; were invited by EQAL Visual Productions to design and produce a new spectacular...
For the 6th edition of the annual Volvo Art Session in Zurich flora&faunavisions; were invited by EQAL Visual Productions to design and produce a new spectacular multimedia format. Breaking with the conventions of the previous editions, which initially focused on urban art, we created a 40 minutes fusion of contemporary dance, projection, music and live-painting.
Our set up offered a 13 meters wide and 7 meters high rear projection , front projection mapping on a white foiled Volvo V90, light design and a stepped public gallery for a perfect view.
We collaborated with the internationally renowned choreographer duo Wang Ramirez, who performed with interactive motion content and music. The show was closed by a live-music act from renowned musician Pablo Nouvelle accompanied by live-painting from Swiss street artist Ata Bozaci and highlighted by generated visuals on the rear screen. The journey led towards the overlapping of digital and analog realms, generated by rhythm an motion.
Furthermore, flora&faunavisions; was responsible for the visual design of the invitation material as well as the key visual for the overall day long event.

For the 6th edition of the annual Volvo Art Session in Zurich flora&faunavisions; were invited by EQAL Visual Productions to design and produce a new spectacular multimedia format. Breaking with the conventions of the previous editions, which initially focused on urban art, we created a 40 minutes fusion of contemporary dance, projection, music and live-painting. Our set up offered a 13 meters wide and 7 meters high rear projection , front projection mapping on a white foiled Volvo V90, light design and a stepped public gallery for a perfect view. Part 1:
The path to becoming a session musician is not very easy, especially in today's market. With studios closing down and being auctioned off,
it is still possible to make a decent living being a session musician but rules are changing, so we have to be on it!

I will be sharing my knowledge and experience to help you on your journey and I am really hoping that my advice will guide you along the way!
There are 3 common ways to getting gigs through:
- 1 Producers
- 2 Bands/songwriters
- 3 Internet
Now lets talk about each one of them in detail! Producers are people who make records come to life, they range from executives in 3 piece suits to an engineer with a home studio. From my experience, the home studio producers will give you much more work than a big record label, of course for a much smaller amount of money. You will likely find that these homegrown producers will most often refer you to bigger and better paying gigs, as they are always working with different musicians constantly, the way to find these producers is very simple; they are everywhere! I found my first session on craigslist and did a lot of work for free, before the money started to come in. You can find a list of local producers and just send them an email with your samples and wait for a reply, it might take a while to get started, but don't give up because eventually someone will come through.
When I moved to Los Angeles I got my hands on a list of local producers in my area and I remember sending more than a thousand emails out, those connections I made 8 years ago still bring me money today!

Bands are a very good tool. My advice is, be in as many bands as you can. Play with as many musicians as you can. You never know who they can become and if they like you, guess what? They will refer you! Also it's a great way to meet producers when your band is recording an album or a demo. And who knows? That producer just might want you for work on other sessions! ALWAYS EXCHANGE CONTACTS WITH PEOPLE YOU ARE WORKING WITH AND STAY IN TOUCH! This is a little trick I've learned a long time ago. I always take a persons info, it doesn't matter who it is as long as it has to do with music and I always stay in touch. When I'm stuck in LA traffic going to my next gig I call alot people of people just to say "Hi" and see how they are the doing. It is very important to keep your relationships fresh, that way they will remember who I am and when something comes up they will call me! NEVER ASK FOR WORK!!! It is ok to say: "Let me know if something comes up" I personally dislike it when people are only calling me to get gigs, I will never refer them...
The Internet is one of the key aspects in getting gigs. It is very important to have a great web presence and be marketable. Imagine a grocery store and you are a customer, there are way too many brands and way too many products so how will you choose from brands that you don't know? Simply by looking at the product, so make sure your product stands out and looks impressive! Invest a little time and money and create a website that people will want to go to! The way you present yourself is crucial. YOU HAVE TO MAKE A GOOD FIRST IMPRESSION!

Use social networking to your benefit. You won't believe how many gigs I get through Facebook and Twitter. Social networking is a big part of the market and most of the time it allows you to work from your home studio and you are not limited to just the city you're in, the whole world is open for you! In the past I've gotten paying gigs in Germany, France, Russia and many other countries just by using social networking!
Go to guitar forums and communicate with other musicians! AND BE NICE!!! Last part is a big thing I've noticed that on guitar forums people are tend to be aggressive with each other and almost 90% have know it all syndrome, which is really funny to see! I read what people post about me and other guitar players and it is very funny to see some guy saying that he could be a star and he is amazing blah, blah, blah you get the point.I hope this little article will help you to get where you want to be and do what you want to do.

For the 6th edition of the annual Volvo Art Session in Zurich flora&faunavisions; were invited by EQAL Visual Productions to design and produce a new spectacular...
For the 6th edition of the annual Volvo Art Session in Zurich flora&faunavisions; were invited by EQAL Visual Productions to design and produce a new spectacular multimedia format. Breaking with the conventions of the previous editions, which initially focused on urban art, we created a 40 minutes fusion of contemporary dance, projection, music and live-painting.
Our set up offered a 13 meters wide and 7 meters high rear projection , front projection mapping on a white foiled Volvo V90, light design and a stepped public gallery for a perfect view.
We collaborated with the internationally renowned choreographer duo Wang Ramirez, who performed with interactive motion content and music. The show was closed by a live-music act from renowned musician Pablo Nouvelle accompanied by live-painting from Swiss street artist Ata Bozaci and highlighted by generated visuals on the rear screen. The journey led towards the overlapping of digital and analog realms, generated by rhythm an motion.
Furthermore, flora&faunavisions; was responsible for the visual design of the invitation material as well as the key visual for the overall day long event.

Vocal trance is a subgenre of trance music that focuses on vocals and melodies. The sub-genre came into existence in the early 1990s, when trance was still developing. Although many early trance records used vocal samples mixed in with the beats, the earliest examples of the style appeared in 1992-93.
A typical track consists of three elements, though later tracks labeled vocal trance may not include all of them. A track begins with an intro of progressive beats. The melodic part starts incrementally, combining vocals, usually female, a melodic sound (for the most part high pitched and fast), and a bass pattern. Towards the end of the track, the melody fades out and the intro rhythm returns, usually with some minor changes.
Vocal trance producers frequently make use of session musicians, particularly females, for vocals on their tracks. Session vocalists have been featured on tracks that span different genres and sub genres, while some vocalists have chosen to work only within the electronic club and dance music genres.
Vocal trance was popular in Europe, notably Germany, Austria, Sweden, Netherlands, Belgium and Great Britain.
