Washington, D.C., formally the District of Columbia and commonly referred to as "Washington", "the District", or simply "D.C.", is the capital of the United States. The signing of the Residence Act on July 16, 1790, approved the creation of a capital district located along the Potomac River on the country's East Coast. The U.S. Constitution provided for a federal district under the exclusive jurisdiction of the Congress and the District is therefore not a part of any U.S. state.
The states of Maryland and Virginia each donated land to form the federal district, which included the pre-existing settlements of Georgetown and Alexandria. Named in honor of George Washington, the City of Washington was founded in 1791 to serve as the new national capital. In 1846, Congress returned the land originally ceded by Virginia; in 1871, it created a single municipal government for the remaining portion of the District.
Washington had an estimated population of 672,228 as of July 2015. Commuters from the surrounding Maryland and Virginia suburbs raise the city's population to more than one million during the workweek. The Washington metropolitan area, of which the District is a part, has a population of over 6 million, the seventh-largest metropolitan statistical area in the country.

Welcome to my IAD-FRA report! After another visit to the united states, it was time for me to return back to switzerland. Since I never tried the 748 so far, I decided to choose Lufthansa via FRA to Zurich. I had to pay for this trip all by myself, and since I'm only a student and sometimes low on money, I had to fly economy. I'm not complaining, if you sometimes fly economy you appreciate business much more! And LH economy class isn't that bad, but have a look yourself in my video! With businesses and people constantly coming and going and frequent policy changes, the state of D.C.'s economy is tough to gauge at times. "It's a little bit of a tale of two cities," Mark Ein, owner of the Washington Kastles told Washington Business Report. Ein says there are many bright spots in D.C.'s economy despite certain ones that impede growth. "D.C.'s one of the hottest cities in America right now and people want to be here," he said, pointing to a hot housing market and city-wide development as factors to boast. Lima means “lime” in Spanish. So as the name suggests, most of the dishes and beverages at Lima are either are prepared or complimented with lime in some fashion. Most notably in Ceviches, fresh fish dishes served raw and marinated in lime juice. A staple of South America, Ceviche is both light and healthy, and always bursting with flavor. Lime is also used in Caipirinha (the national cocktail of Brazil) and Mojitos to add zing to these traditional alcoholic refreshments. Even the butter at LIMA is infused with lime. Not surprisingly, it is also a personal favorite of owner Masoud A. By design, LIMA was created for those well versed in food, wine, music & style. A hybrid restaurant, lounge and bar on three separate levels (with an outdoor patio open year round), Lima is uniquely suited fo...

We discuss the current health care situation and the plan being considered by Republicans in the Senate.
The Republicans' time-crunched effort to pass a health-care bill is hitting a lot of resistance in the Senate. The Post's Paige W. Cunningham explains the key reasons why the party struggles to move a health-care plan forward.

Commissioned by the Washington Department of Health and directed by Chel White, these are anti-smoking ads intended for adolescents. The concept is to communicate that smoking would make oneself unappealing to one's peers. The thinking was this approach would resonate better with kids than a message about health concerns, which for most kids are far off on the horizon. Both public service ads were produced at Bent Image Lab, Portland Oregon. The advertising agency was Sedgwick Rd.

The activists from QUEEROCRACY, ACT UP NY and ACT UP Philadelphia painted slogans on their bodies instead of holding signs: “AIDS Cuts Kill” and “Fund PEPFAR, Fund Ryan White, Fund Global Fund, Fund Medicaid, Fund HOPWA.” “When you strip away the rhetoric of the fiscal cliff and the grand bargain, you see that these terms are a way to thinly veil draconian budget cuts that will leave millions around the world with absolutely nothing,” said Cassidy Gardner from QUEEROCRACY. On Thursday, Secretary Clinton is expected to announce a blueprint to end AIDS. The mandatory budget cuts will make this goal nearly impossible, resulting in at least 620,000 otherwise preventable deaths from HIV. The naked protest was timed to coincide with the World AIDS Day march of hundreds of AIDS activists marchi...

The University of Washington took an ambitious step today to assert its leadership in computer science education, research and entrepreneurial innovation with the establishment of the Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science & Engineering. The creation of the school is also a tribute to Allen’s vision of the role that science should play in society, by coupling technological innovation with the quest for solutions to humankind’s greatest challenges. A panel discussion featuring authors Sarah Knopp & Jesse Hagopian. A conservative consensus dominates the discussion about what's wrong with our schools and how to fix them: scapegoat teachers, vilify our unions, and promise more private control and m...arket solutions. In each case, students lose—especially students of color and the children of the working class and the poor. Education and Capitalism, written by teacher activists, speaks back to that elite consensus. It draws on the ideas and experiences of social justice educators concerned with fighting against racism and working for equality—of activists trying to recapture the radical roots of the labor movement. Informed by a revolutionary vision of pedagogy, schools, and education, the book offers a radical critique of education i...

During 2014, I was fortunate enough to undertake a semester abroad at Washington State University, in America’s Pacific Northwest. Studying Health and Physical Education, the world-class academics and sporting culture provided an incredible experience, which I will forever cherish. The town of Pullman was an infectiously happy and kind place. The pride that each student and staff member had in being a Washington State Cougar made for a tight knit college community. Creating an entire new life for myself abroad is by far the most rewarding thing I have ever done. From developing life-long friendships, to volunteering in local schools, watching college football, sharing Thanksgiving and Christmas with friends, and exploring the diverse landscapes of Washington State and Canada, studying ...
For the past few years astronomer Don Winget has been using the Z Machine, the world's largest x-ray generator, to create white dwarf "star stuff" here on earth. When he put a photograph of the Z Machine up on the projector in his Astronomy 301 course, it inspired fine arts student Leah Flippen to begin a painting of the same name. In this video Winget and Flippen talk about the machine, the painting, and the interplay between science and art. Sandia National Laboratories is considering buying the painting, to be hung right outside the actual machine. "In 1969, a group of black and Puerto Rican students occupied City College demanding the integration of CUNY, which at the time had an overwhelmingly white student body. The occupation spread to other CUNY campuses, forcing the Board of Trustees to implement a ground-breaking new admissions policy." Such occupations also occurred in the 1980s and 2000s. It's that time again. As graduate Film students at Hunter College in New York, we're very excited to see how the spreading Occupy Wall Street movement is giving new momentum to the militant protest culture of Cuny (City University, NYC). We filmed the second General Assembly at Hunter College, and the first "Occupy Cuny" teach-in at Washington Square Park on October 21st, 2011. There is no pain Jesus can't feel
No hurt He can not heal
All things work according to His perfect will
No matter what you're going through
Remember God is using You
For the battle is not yours
It's the Lord's
There's no sadness Jesus can't feel
And there is no sorrow
that He can not heal
For all things work
according to the Master's holy will
No matter what you're going through
Remember that God is only using You
For the battle is not yours
It's the Lord's
It's the Lord's
Yes It's the Lord's
Hold your head up high
Don't you fright
It's the Lord's
It's the Lord's
Yes It's the Lord's
No matter what
You're going through
Remember that God
Only wants to use you
For the battle is not yours
It's the Lord's
No matter what
You happen to go through right now
Remember that in the midst of it all
God only wants to use you
No matter what you're going through
For the battle is not yours
It's the Lord's
No matter what it is
That you're going through
Hold your head up, stick your chest out
And remember He's using you
No matter what you're going through
God is only using you
For this battle is not yours alone
This battle is not yours, no
You can not handle it all by yourself
No, no, no, no, no, no
It's not yours
This battle is not yours
It's the Lord's, not yours
This battle is not yours
The Lord is the only one who can fight it
He wants to use you as His vessel
So be open to Him
It's not yours
No It's not yours
It's the Lord's, not yours
The battle is not your's
It's the Lord's
Hallelujah
yeah!
