Jeroen van Veen’s recordings of Minimalist piano music have received critical acclaim while also reaching a wide and receptive audience. Previous albums of Satie (BC94768), Einaudi (BC9452), Glass (BC9519), Riley (BC95217) and much more are now joined by the music of Michael Nyman, who may not have invented the genre as Satie did, but was the first to bring Glass, Reich and their contemporaries to wider attention and coin the term Minimalism to describe the way that they rebelled against European modernism and returned to a stripped-back tonality in ways that meshed with popular music of the time.
Michael Nyman (born 1944) is one of the most famous and successful film music composers of our time. His music, although inextricably connected with the visual action of a film, has the quality to stand on its own, to evoke and express the visual emotions in sounds only.
Nyman’s most famous film score is of the film “The Piano” , becoming an instant hit. Its openness and its deceptively simple musical lines appealed to a mass audience.
The music featured on this recording is either originally written for piano or arranged by the composer himself.
Minimal Music champion Jeroen van Veen has been fascinated by Nyman’s music his whole life, and the recording of it was a logical step. He is the ideal interpreter of this seductive, mind opening music.

Dedicated to the memory of the Juventus F.C. fans killed in the Heysel Stadium tragedy, in May 1985. It had a strong effect on movie director Peter Greenaway, who decided to model parts of his film The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover on this composition. In fact, this composition is perhaps the best example of the integration of Nyman's music to Greenaway's work. The final sequence of the movie was entirely choreographed around the fifth movement.

My music for The Draughtman’s Contract neatly draws together some musicological loose-ends of 1967 with some not-so-loose compositional ends (and means) of 1982. The setting of the film -England c.1695- suggested the use of (then) contemporary music, and immediately that of Henry Purcell not merely because he died in 1695 but because he was a better composer than anyone else in England at that time (and more or less ever since).
[…] One of the delights of working with Peter Greenaway is the possibilities it gives me of providing a ‘service’ and working precisely the same way I do when writing my ‘concert music’; but without The Draughtman’s Contract there would have been no opportunity to return, gratefully, to the music of my past, that of Henry Purcell.

Nyman's music is highly charged and persistently pushes the musicians to virtually impossible limits of technique which they respond to with rare dedication, offering original, imaginative solutions. But the mood, particularly in 'Chasing sheep is best left to shepherds', 'An eye for optical theory', is one of unutterable enjoyment and exuberant fun (a quality rare in contemporary music). By contrast, 'The garden is becoming a robe room' reveals a poignant, pleading, throbbing character where Nyman uses his musicians to paint dark, despairing colours, sometimes admitting a 'rude', maybe ironic baritone saxophone entry, but plumbing considerable depths of sorrow and anguish.

"1-100 was composed on 19 December 1975 as a sound track for a film by a friend of mine, Peter Greenaway. This film consists of the numbers one to a hundred, shot in an assortment of locations and contexts and edited in sequence. Peter Greenaway asked me to find some musical parallel for this additive arithmetic process and, additionally, to provide a rhythm to edit the numerical sequence to. [...] This recorded realisation of 1-100 consists of four unsynchronised superimposed readings. What interests me about musical processes is the fact that one can precisely specify the material and the method of articulation, and yet leave the system open in some way to bring about something more than mere unprogrammed incidentals: rather the complete transformation of the material, the effacement of the 'given' identity. This was a pleasantly unexpected consequence of making the four 'blind' (deaf?) superimpositions of the 100-chord sequence. Thus not only are entirely unforseen, accidental concurrences and staggered sonorities thrown up, but the original harmonic rhythm, the expected resolution of 'dissonant' chords, disappears almost entirely too."

I chose to make my showreel as an ongoing project, so always have the option to keep it updated, the plan is that each time has completed 2-3 projects, I will cut them into the current showreel. It is most projects that I had much fun with. A lot of personal projects and some from my work.

This remix marks the first time multi-million selling minimalist soundtrack composer Michael Nyman (The Piano; Gattaca; The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover) has allowed his work to be remixed. The "Reconstructions EP" is out on Last Night on Earth Recordings 9 July.

THE VIDEO
For the video, animator and director Nick Cobby wanted to add a human element to his visuals for the first time, asking Max Cooper fans to come down to his London studio to be filmed.
"After listening to the track, I was aware of how important the vocal element is in the track, which added an emotional and human element alongside Max's sonic soundscapes. I knew that i wanted to include real people for the first time, but i wanted to change their appearance; making them something more animated and kinetic, and therefore bring them into Max's world."
Each participant was filmed individually, concentrating on their facial expressions and head movements. Incorporating Kinect camera technology, depth data captured by the Kinect was used to create 3d point data of the individuals filmed. This 3d map was then reconstructed to re-create the participants, utilising code and creative technology to create a generative outcome.

THE MUSIC
The Reconstructions EP comprises two Max Cooper reworks – one abstract, one dancefloor - of Secrets, Accusations and Charges, Nyman's collaboration with the songwriter and vocalist David McAlmont.
The song first appeared on Nyman and McAlmont's album, The Glare. It places McAlmont’s lyrics, inspired by a newspaper story about a quiet suburban Scottish woman who was discovered to be a jewel thief, over Nyman’s theme for the film Gattaca.
As the Gattaca theme is an orchestral piece, both the Deconstruction and Reconstruction are built from samples of only two soundfiles: a track of McAlmont’s voice, and a single track of The Michael Nyman Ensemble playing the Gattaca theme.

Michael Nyman
Michael Laurence Nyman, CBE (born 23 March 1944) is an English composer of minimalist music, pianist, librettist and musicologist, known for numerous film scores (many written during his lengthy collaboration with the filmmaker Peter Greenaway), and his multi-platinum soundtrack album to Jane Campion's The Piano. He has additionally written a number of operas, including The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat, Letters, Riddles and Writs, Noises, Sounds & Sweet Airs, Facing Goya, Man and Boy: Dada, Love Counts, and Sparkie: Cage and Beyond, and he has written six concerti, four string quartets, and many other chamber works, many for his Michael Nyman Band, with and without whom he tours as a performing pianist. Nyman stated that he prefers to write opera rather than other sorts of music.
Early life and education
Nyman was born in Stratford, London to a family of Polish secular Jewish furriers.
Nyman was educated at the Sir George Monoux Grammar School, Walthamstow. He studied at King's College London under Alan Bush and was accepted at the Royal Academy of Music in September 1961, studying with Bush and Thurston Dart, focusing on piano and seventeenth-century baroque music. He won the Howard Carr Memorial Prize for composition in July 1964. In 1965–66 Nyman secured a residency in Romania, to study folk-song, supported by a British Council bursary.

"1-100 was composed on 19 December 1975 as a sound track for a film by a friend of mine, Peter Greenaway. This film consists of the numbers one to a hundred, shot in an assortment of locations and contexts and edited in sequence. Peter Greenaway asked me to find some musical parallel for this additive arithmetic process and, additionally, to provide a rhythm to edit the numerical sequence to. [...] This recorded realisation of 1-100 consists of four unsynchronised superimposed readings. What interests me about musical processes is the fact that one can precisely specify the material and the method of articulation, and yet leave the system open in some way to bring about something more than mere unprogrammed incidentals: rather the complete transformation of the material, the effacement of the 'given' identity. This was a pleasantly unexpected consequence of making the four 'blind' (deaf?) superimpositions of the 100-chord sequence. Thus not only are entirely unforseen, accidental concurrences and staggered sonorities thrown up, but the original harmonic rhythm, the expected resolution of 'dissonant' chords, disappears almost entirely too." -

I chose to make my showreel as an ongoing project, so always have the option to keep it updated, the plan is that each time has completed 2-3 projects, I will cut them into the current showreel. This remix marks the first time multi-million selling minimalist soundtrack composer Michael Nyman (The Piano; Gattaca; The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover) has allowed his work to be remixed. The "Reconstructions EP" is out on Last Night on Earth Recordings 9 July. __________________________________________________________________________________________ THE VIDEO For the video, animator and director Nick Cobby wanted to add a human element to his visuals for the first time, asking Max Cooper fans to come down to his London studio to be filmed. "After listening to the track, I was aware of how important the vocal element is in the track, which added an emotional and human element alongside Max's sonic soundscapes. I knew that i wanted to include real people for the first time, but i wanted to change their appearance; making them something more animated and kinetic, and therefore bring them into Max's world." Each participant was filmed individually, concentrating on their facial expressions and head movements. Incorporating Kinect camera technology, depth data captured by the Kinect was used to create 3d point data of the individuals filmed. This 3d map was then reconstructed to re-create the participants, utilising code and creative technology to create a generative outcome. __________________________________________________________________________________________ THE MUSIC The Reconstructions EP comprises two Max Cooper reworks – one abstract, one dancefloor - of Secrets, Accusations and Charges, Nyman's collaboration with the songwriter and vocalist David McAlmont. The song first appeared on Nyman and McAlmont's album, The Glare. It places McAlmont’s lyrics, inspired by a newspaper story about a quiet suburban Scottish woman who was discovered to be a jewel thief, over Nyman’s theme for the film Gattaca. As the Gattaca theme is an orchestral piece, both the Deconstruction and Reconstruction are built from samples of only two soundfiles: a track of McAlmont’s voice, and a single track of The Michael Nyman Ensemble playing the Gattaca theme. Michael Nyman's "Memorial"
Dedicated to the memory of the Juventus F.C. fans killed in the Heysel Stadium tragedy, in May 1985. It had a strong effect on movie director Peter Greenaway, who decided to model parts of his film The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover on this composition. In fact, this composition is perhaps the best example of the integration of Nyman's music to Greenaway's work. The final sequence of the movie was entirely choreographed around the fifth movement.

Jeroen van Veen’s recordings of Minimalist piano music have received critical acclaim while also reaching a wide and receptive audience. Previous albums of Satie (BC94768), Einaudi (BC9452), Glass (BC9519), Riley (BC95217) and much more are now joined by the music of Michael Nyman, who may not have invented the genre as Satie did, but was the first to bring Glass, Reich and their contemporaries to wider attention and coin the term Minimalism to describe the way that they rebelled against European modernism and returned to a stripped-back tonality in ways that meshed with popular music of the time.
Michael Nyman (born 1944) is one of the most famous and successful film music composers of our time. His music, although inextricably connected with the visual action of a film, has the quality to stand on its own, to evoke and express the visual emotions in sounds only.
Nyman’s most famous film score is of the film “The Piano” , becoming an instant hit. Its openness and its deceptively simple musical lines appealed to a mass audience.
The music featured on this recording is either originally written for piano or arranged by the composer himself.
Minimal Music champion Jeroen van Veen has been fascinated by Nyman’s music his whole life, and the recording of it was a logical step. He is the ideal interpreter of this seductive, mind opening music.

Dedicated to the memory of the Juventus F.C. fans killed in the Heysel Stadium tragedy, in May 1985. It had a strong effect on movie director Peter Greenaway, who decided to model parts of his film The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover on this composition. In fact, this composition is perhaps the best example of the integration of Nyman's music to Greenaway's work. The final sequence of the movie was entirely choreographed around the fifth movement.

My music for The Draughtman’s Contract neatly draws together some musicological loose-ends of 1967 with some not-so-loose compositional ends (and means) of 1982. The setting of the film -England c.1695- suggested the use of (then) contemporary music, and immediately that of Henry Purcell not merely because he died in 1695 but because he was a better composer than anyone else in England at that time (and more or less ever since).
[…] One of the delights of working with Peter Greenaway is the possibilities it gives me of providing a ‘service’ and working precisely the same way I do when writing my ‘concert music’; but without The Draughtman’s Contract there would have been no opportunity to return, gratefully, to the music of my past, that of Henry Purcell.

Nyman's music is highly charged and persistently pushes the musicians to virtually impossible limits of technique which they respond to with rare dedication, offering original, imaginative solutions. But the mood, particularly in 'Chasing sheep is best left to shepherds', 'An eye for optical theory', is one of unutterable enjoyment and exuberant fun (a quality rare in contemporary music). By contrast, 'The garden is becoming a robe room' reveals a poignant, pleading, throbbing character where Nyman uses his musicians to paint dark, despairing colours, sometimes admitting a 'rude', maybe ironic baritone saxophone entry, but plumbing considerable depths of sorrow and anguish.

"1-100 was composed on 19 December 1975 as a sound track for a film by a friend of mine, Peter Greenaway. This film consists of the numbers one to a hundred, shot in an assortment of locations and contexts and edited in sequence. Peter Greenaway asked me to find some musical parallel for this additive arithmetic process and, additionally, to provide a rhythm to edit the numerical sequence to. [...] This recorded realisation of 1-100 consists of four unsynchronised superimposed readings. What interests me about musical processes is the fact that one can precisely specify the material and the method of articulation, and yet leave the system open in some way to bring about something more than mere unprogrammed incidentals: rather the complete transformation of the material, the effacement of the 'given' identity. This was a pleasantly unexpected consequence of making the four 'blind' (deaf?) superimpositions of the 100-chord sequence. Thus not only are entirely unforseen, accidental concurrences and staggered sonorities thrown up, but the original harmonic rhythm, the expected resolution of 'dissonant' chords, disappears almost entirely too."

So I finally made a showreel. It is a mix of something old and of course the newest. I chose to make my showreel as an ongoing project, so always have the option to keep it updated, the plan is that each time has completed 2-3 projects, I will cut them into the current showreel. It is most projects that I had much fun with. A lot of personal projects and some from my work.

This remix marks the first time multi-million selling minimalist soundtrack composer Michael Nyman (The Piano; Gattaca; The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover) has allowed his work to be remixed. The "Reconstructions EP" is out on Last Night on Earth Recordings 9 July.

THE VIDEO
For the video, animator and director Nick Cobby wanted to add a human element to his visuals for the first time, asking Max Cooper fans to come down to his London studio to be filmed.
"After listening to the track, I was aware of how important the vocal element is in the track, which added an emotional and human element alongside Max's sonic soundscapes. I knew that i wanted to include real people for the first time, but i wanted to change their appearance; making them something more animated and kinetic, and therefore bring them into Max's world."
Each participant was filmed individually, concentrating on their facial expressions and head movements. Incorporating Kinect camera technology, depth data captured by the Kinect was used to create 3d point data of the individuals filmed. This 3d map was then reconstructed to re-create the participants, utilising code and creative technology to create a generative outcome.

The Reconstructions EP comprises two Max Cooper reworks – one abstract, one dancefloor - of Secrets, Accusations and Charges, Nyman's collaboration with the songwriter and vocalist David McAlmont.
The song first appeared on Nyman and McAlmont's album, The Glare. It places McAlmont’s lyrics, inspired by a newspaper story about a quiet suburban Scottish woman who was discovered to be a jewel thief, over Nyman’s theme for the film Gattaca.
As the Gattaca theme is an orchestral piece, both the Deconstruction and Reconstruction are built from samples of only two soundfiles: a track of McAlmont’s voice, and a single track of The Michael Nyman Ensemble playing the Gattaca theme.

Michael Nyman's "Memorial"
Dedicated to the memory of the Juventus F.C. fans killed in the Heysel Stadium tragedy, in May 1985. It had a strong effect on movie director Peter Greenaway, who decided to model parts of his film The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover on this composition. In fact, this composition is perhaps the best example of the integration of Nyman's music to Greenaway's work. The final sequence of the movie was entirely choreographed around the fifth movement.

Michael Nyman (born 1944) is one of the most famous and successful film music composers of our time. His music, although inextricably connected with the visual action of a film, has the quality to stand on its own, to evoke and express the visual emotions in sounds only.
Nyman’s most famous film score is of the film “The Piano” , becoming an instant hit. Its openness and its deceptively simple musical lines appealed to a mass audience.
The music featured on this recording is either originally written for piano or arranged by the composer himself.
Minimal Music champion Jeroen van Veen has been fascinated by Nyman’s music his whole life, and the recording of it was a logical step. He is the ideal interpreter of this seductive, mind opening music.

Jeroen van Veen’s recordings of Minimalist piano music have received critical acclaim while also reaching a wide and receptive audience. Previous albums of Satie (BC94768), Einaudi (BC9452), Glass (BC9519), Riley (BC95217) and much more are now joined by the music of Michael Nyman, who may not have invented the genre as Satie did, but was the first to bring Glass, Reich and their contemporaries to wider attention and coin the term Minimalism to describe the way that they rebelled against European modernism and returned to a stripped-back tonality in ways that meshed with popular music of the time.
Michael Nyman (born 1944) is one of the most famous and successful film music composers of our time. His music, although inextricably connected with the visual action of a film, has the quality to stand on its own, to evoke and express the visual emotions in sounds only.
Nyman’s most famous film score is of the film “The Piano” , becoming an instant hit. Its openness and its deceptively simple musical lines appealed to a mass audience.
The music featured on this recording is either originally written for piano or arranged by the composer himself.
Minimal Music champion Jeroen van Veen has been fascinated by Nyman’s music his whole life, and the recording of it was a logical step. He is the ideal interpreter of this seductive, mind opening music.

Dedicated to the memory of the Juventus F.C. fans killed in the Heysel Stadium tragedy, in May 1985. It had a strong effect on movie director Peter Greenaway, who decided to model parts of his film The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover on this composition. In fact, this composition is perhaps the best example of the integration of Nyman's music to Greenaway's work. The final sequence of the movie was entirely choreographed around the fifth movement.

My music for The Draughtman’s Contract neatly draws together some musicological loose-ends of 1967 with some not-so-loose compositional ends (and means) of 1982. The setting of the film -England c.1695- suggested the use of (then) contemporary music, and immediately that of Henry Purcell not merely because he died in 1695 but because he was a better composer than anyone else in England at that time (and more or less ever since).
[…] One of the delights of working with Peter Greenaway is the possibilities it gives me of providing a ‘service’ and working precisely the same way I do when writing my ‘concert music’; but without The Draughtman’s Contract there would have been no opportunity to return, gratefully, to the music of my past, that of Henry Purcell.

Nyman's music is highly charged and persistently pushes the musicians to virtually impossible limits of technique which they respond to with rare dedication, offering original, imaginative solutions. But the mood, particularly in 'Chasing sheep is best left to shepherds', 'An eye for optical theory', is one of unutterable enjoyment and exuberant fun (a quality rare in contemporary music). By contrast, 'The garden is becoming a robe room' reveals a poignant, pleading, throbbing character where Nyman uses his musicians to paint dark, despairing colours, sometimes admitting a 'rude', maybe ironic baritone saxophone entry, but plumbing considerable depths of sorrow and anguish.

"1-100 was composed on 19 December 1975 as a sound track for a film by a friend of mine, Peter Greenaway. This film consists of the numbers one to a hundred, shot in an assortment of locations and contexts and edited in sequence. Peter Greenaway asked me to find some musical parallel for this additive arithmetic process and, additionally, to provide a rhythm to edit the numerical sequence to. [...] This recorded realisation of 1-100 consists of four unsynchronised superimposed readings. What interests me about musical processes is the fact that one can precisely specify the material and the method of articulation, and yet leave the system open in some way to bring about something more than mere unprogrammed incidentals: rather the complete transformation of the material, the effacement of the 'given' identity. This was a pleasantly unexpected consequence of making the four 'blind' (deaf?) superimpositions of the 100-chord sequence. Thus not only are entirely unforseen, accidental concurrences and staggered sonorities thrown up, but the original harmonic rhythm, the expected resolution of 'dissonant' chords, disappears almost entirely too."

I chose to make my showreel as an ongoing project, so always have the option to keep it updated, the plan is that each time has completed 2-3 projects, I will cut them into the current showreel. It is most projects that I had much fun with. A lot of personal projects and some from my work.

This remix marks the first time multi-million selling minimalist soundtrack composer Michael Nyman (The Piano; Gattaca; The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover) has allowed his work to be remixed. The "Reconstructions EP" is out on Last Night on Earth Recordings 9 July.

THE VIDEO
For the video, animator and director Nick Cobby wanted to add a human element to his visuals for the first time, asking Max Cooper fans to come down to his London studio to be filmed.
"After listening to the track, I was aware of how important the vocal element is in the track, which added an emotional and human element alongside Max's sonic soundscapes. I knew that i wanted to include real people for the first time, but i wanted to change their appearance; making them something more animated and kinetic, and therefore bring them into Max's world."
Each participant was filmed individually, concentrating on their facial expressions and head movements. Incorporating Kinect camera technology, depth data captured by the Kinect was used to create 3d point data of the individuals filmed. This 3d map was then reconstructed to re-create the participants, utilising code and creative technology to create a generative outcome.

The Reconstructions EP comprises two Max Cooper reworks – one abstract, one dancefloor - of Secrets, Accusations and Charges, Nyman's collaboration with the songwriter and vocalist David McAlmont.
The song first appeared on Nyman and McAlmont's album, The Glare. It places McAlmont’s lyrics, inspired by a newspaper story about a quiet suburban Scottish woman who was discovered to be a jewel thief, over Nyman’s theme for the film Gattaca.
As the Gattaca theme is an orchestral piece, both the Deconstruction and Reconstruction are built from samples of only two soundfiles: a track of McAlmont’s voice, and a single track of The Michael Nyman Ensemble playing the Gattaca theme.

As the Gattaca theme is an orchestral piece, both the Deconstruction and Reconstruction are built from samples of only two soundfiles: a track of McAlmont’s voice, and a single track of The Michael Nyman Ensemble playing the Gattaca theme.

This remix marks the first time multi-million selling minimalist soundtrack composer Michael Nyman (The Piano; Gattaca; The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover) has allowed his work to be remixed. The "Reconstructions EP" is out on Last Night on Earth Recordings 9 July.
THE VIDEO
For the video, animator and director Nick Cobby wanted to add a human element to his visuals for the first time, asking Max Cooper fans to come down to his London studio to be filmed.
"After listening to the track, I was aware of how important the vocal element is in the track, which added an emotional and human element alongside Max's sonic soundscapes. I knew that i wanted to include real people for the first time, but i wanted to change their appearance; making them something more animated and kinetic, and therefore bring them into Max's world."
Each participant was filmed individually, concentrating on their facial expressions and head movements. Incorporating Kinect camera technology, depth data captured by the Kinect was used to create 3d point data of the individuals filmed. This 3d map was then reconstructed to re-create the participants, utilising code and creative technology to create a generative outcome.
THE MUSIC
The Reconstructions EP comprises two Max Cooper reworks – one abstract, one dancefloor - of Secrets, Accusations and Charges, Nyman's collaboration with the songwriter and vocalist David McAlmont.
