Wide of field with American flag STORYLINE: US Interior Secretary Ken Salazar and relatives of United Flight 93 victims turned shovels of dirt at a groundbreaking ceremony on Saturday for a permanent national memorial at the western Pennsylvania crash site. The government intends to have the first phase of the memorial completed by September 11, 2011, the attacks' 10th anniversary. Gordon Felt of the Families of Flight 93 said on Saturday the victims' courage inspired people to work on the project. The 2,200 acre park (3.4 square miles) will feature a chapel with 40 chimes symbolising each of the victims at its entryway. A path will guide visitors to the crash site. The plane was travelling from Newark, New Jersey, to San Francisco when it was diverted by hijackers with the likely goal of crashing it into the White House or Capitol. Passengers rushed down the airliner's narrow aisle to try to overwhelm the hijackers after learning of the coordinated attacks. The commission concluded that the hijackers downed the plane as the hostages revolted. It was the only one of four hijacked planes that day that did not take a life on the ground. The initial phase represents the vast majority of the park and will cost 58 (m) million US Dollars, of which 30 (m) million US Dollars will be paid through private contributions. While visitors will be able to approach the edge of the crash site, only families of the victims will be able to enter the area, which will be planted with wild flowers.
