Donald Earl "Don" Messick (September 7, 1926 – October 24, 1997) was an American voice actor, best known for his voice over roles for Hanna-Barbera.
His best-remembered vocal creations include Scooby-Doo, Bamm-Bamm Rubble and Hoppy in The Flintstones, Astro in The Jetsons, Muttley in Wacky Races and Dastardly and Muttley in Their Flying Machines, Sebastian the cat in Josie and the Pussycats; Gears, Ratchet, and Scavenger in The Transformers, Papa Smurf in The Smurfs, and Dr. Benton Quest in Jonny Quest.
Messick was born in Buffalo, New York, the son of Binford Earl Messick, a house painter, and Lena Birch (née Hughes).
At first, Messick wanted to be a ventriloquist, and even supported himself as one for a time. His big break came in the mid-1940s. His first major voice over role was as Raggedy Andy on the radio series The Raggedy Ann Show.
At MGM, Tex Avery was producing the Droopy cartoons. The regular voice actor Bill Thompson was not available. Daws Butler, who voiced characters for MGM, suggested that Avery seek out Messick, and so, he was hired to voice Droopy.

Facts on one of Hannah Barbara's legendary voice actors Don Messick
Thousands of year in the past, teenage caveman Tor transforms into The Mighty Mightor via his magical club, and sets out to protect his neolithic village from evil-doers. The great Don Messick contributes his vocal artistry to the show.
This is from a converted two projector slide show from 1980, done as a school project while I was attending Brooks Photography Institute for the Los Padres National Forest Park Service. Shot with Kodachrome film with a 35mm camera, I spent about a week with the YACC (Young Adult Youth Corps) on location near Santa Barbara, CA. Although renamed as the Youth Conservation Corps, the program is still in existence today and gives young people a way to work for the National Forest Service doing lots of jobs to maintain our parks. One of the most interesting trivia aspects of this show is the narrator. On a billboard at school was a torn piece of paper with a phone number of a professional broadcaster who offered students free narration for their projects. No name was on the note, just a number...
This is where the famous "muttley laugh" came from... this animated series began in 1965, three years before muttley was created. Did you know - Don Messick used that "dirty snicker" as far back as 1949's "Wags To Riches" for Tex Avery, at MGM. Later, he used it again on several Huckleberry Hound cartoons in the late '50s, and eventually, as Muttley. (courtesy Barry I. Grauman)

A tycoon (voiced by Don Messick) decides to give away $1,000,000 to the most unfortunate person he finds, which ends up being Top Cat. He gives the check to Benny, who tries to show it to Top Cat (who ignores him), so he tries to cash it himself. A merchant overhears him and tells all his associates. Everybody gives things to Top Cat thinking he is a millionaire, and that he'll pay them back.
This is a rare pilot from 1970 of Hanna-Barbera's primetime TV cartoon series, WHERE'S HUDDLES? What you'll see are full color storyboard drawings by Iwao Takamoto, Jerry Eisenberg and Willie Ito that were filmed and set to a complete soundtrack in order to demonstrate to CBS what the series would look like. Some of the character voices were changed once the series went into full production. Any glitches or imperfections you notice were on my original source tape. Overall, the quality is pretty good. Enjoy! Includes the vocal talents of Cliff Norton, Mel Blanc, Paul Lynde, Nancy Kulp, Joe Besser, Don Messick and Allan Melvin.
Dibble gets a new partner on the beat: the dog Griswald. Top Cat and the gang attempt to outwit him, but the dog always seems to be one step ahead. T.C. manages to get the dog removed from duty after he bites the police sergeant and the police commissioner (Don Messick).

Jazz (Daws Butler impersonating Phil Silvers), the new cat in town (known as "A.T." – All That), takes over the pool hall, steals Top Cat's girlfriend, sways the gang and cleans up the alley. This sparks a contest between the pair. However, when both Jazz and Top Cat are offered a part in a Hollywood film, they assume that it is another trick. The offer turns out to be legitimate, and Benny is cast in the starring role in The Thing from the Alley. He leaves for Hollywood in a limo, accompanied by Top Cat and the gang in the guise of Benny's manager, valet, vocal coach, tailor and chauffeur. After that, Officer Dibble catches Jazz using the police phone, now declaring that Jazz "is just as bad as Top Cat". Jazz and his buddy Beau (Don Messick) are forced to keep the alley clean for 30 days
