Aaron Burr

Aaron Burr, Jr. (February 6, 1756 – September 14, 1836) was an American politician. He was the third Vice President of the United States (1801–05); he served during President Thomas Jefferson's first term.

After serving as a Continental Army officer in the Revolutionary War, Burr became a successful lawyer and politician. He was elected twice to the New York State Assembly (1784–85, 1798–99), was appointed New York State Attorney General (1789–91), was chosen as a United States Senator (1791–97) from the state of New York, and reached the apex of his career as vice president.

The highlight of Burr's tenure as President of the Senate (one of his few official duties as vice president) was the Senate's first impeachment trial, of Supreme Court Justice Samuel Chase. In 1804, the last full year of his single term as vice president, Burr killed his political rival Alexander Hamilton in a famous duel. Burr was never tried for the illegal duel, and all charges against him were eventually dropped, but Hamilton's death ended Burr's political career.

Aaron Burr, Sr. (January 4, 1716–September 24, 1757) was a notable Presbyterian minister and college educator in colonial America. He was a founder of the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University) and the father of the third United States Vice President, Aaron Burr (1756–1836), who dueled—and killed—Alexander Hamilton.

Early years

A native of Connecticut, Burr was born in 1716 in present-day Fairfield to Daniel and Elizabeth Burr; his father was a wealthy farmer. He was of English ancestry (his grandfather Jehu Burr had been born in Lavenham, Suffolk, England, in 1625, settled in the Connecticut Colony as a young man, and died there in 1692). Aaron Burr attended Yale College (now Yale University), where he obtained a B.A. in 1735. After graduation, he studied theology in New Haven and witnessed the First Great Awakening. He was personally acquainted with Jonathan Edwards, and his wife Sarah, daughter of James Pierpont. Jonathan Edwards was a leader of the Great Awakening, a significant religious and spiritual movement of the 1730s and 1740s, and Burr's mentor.

Aaron Burr is a television advertisement created in 1993. It was the first commercial in the Got Milk? advertising campaign.

Synopsis

The ad takes place in a private museum filled with many artifacts revolving around the Burr-Hamilton duel. It is owned by a hapless history buff (portrayed by Sean Whalen), who is first shown spreading peanut butter over a piece of bread. He is listening to a classical radio station, which then halts to a radio announcer (voiced by Rob Paulsen) who then announces they will make a "random call" to a person to see if they can answer the question, "Who shot Hamilton in that famous duel?", making the man, while eating a curled bread slice, knowingly look around in his museum. His phone then rings, and he interrupts the radio announcer mid-sentence, answering the question correctly by saying "Aaron Burr". However, because of the peanut butter sandwich in his mouth, the announcer cannot hear him correctly. The man then tries to pour some milk into a glass, but is mortified to discover he only has a drop left. He only has a few seconds left and tries to say the answer again and again, but because the announcer cannot hear him, he hangs up. The ad ends with the history buff staring sadly at his phone, whispering "Aaron Burr...", as we fade out and the words "got milk?" appear.

In the Hebrew Bible and the Quran, Aaron אַהֲרֹן (UK /ˈɛərən/, US /ˈærən/) was the older brother of Moses (Exodus 6:16-20, 7:7; Qur'an 28:34) and a prophet of God. Unlike Moses, who grew up in the Egyptian royal court, Aaron and his elder sister Miriam remained with their kinsmen in the eastern border-land of Egypt (Goshen). When Moses first confronted the Egyptian king about the Israelites, Aaron served as his brother's spokesman ("prophet") to Pharaoh. (Exodus 7:1) Part of the Law (Torah) that Moses received from God at Sinai granted Aaron the priesthood for himself and his male descendants, and he became the first High Priest of the Israelites. Various dates for his life have been proposed, ranging from approximately 1600 to 1200 BC. Aaron died before the Israelites crossed the Jordan river and he was buried on Mount Hor (Numbers 33:39; Deuteronomy 10:6 says he died and was buried at Moserah). Aaron is also mentioned in the New Testament of the Bible.

Aaron Scotus

Aaron Scotus, Irish abbot and musician, fl. late 10th century – 14 December 1052.

Background

Aaron was an Irish abbot and music theorist, the term Scotus at the time denoting Irish (person).

St. Martin's of Cologne

A Benedictine, Scotus was the abbot of St. Martin, Cologne, Germany in the year 1042. He pilgrimaged in his youth to Colonia to the Gaelic-Irish convent of St. Martin. He became abbot of the same in 1042. He was identified with Aaron, abbot of St. Pantaleon. Today historians reject this identification.

Work as a composer

It is believed that he first introduced the Gregorian evening service (nocturns) into Germany. He authored two historically important treaties: De utilitate cantus vocalis et de modo cantandi atque psallendi and De regulis tonorum et symphoniarum. The library of St. Martin, Cologne conserves his work Tractatum de utilitate cantus vocalis et de modo cantandi atque psallendi. He wrote three musical treatises, all of which have been lost.

Aaron died on December 14, 1052.
