The Teaches of Peaches

The Teaches of Peaches is the second studio album by Canadian recording artist Peaches, and her first under the stage name Peaches. It was released on September 5, 2000 by Kitty-Yo. Her indie-singer roommate Feist contributed vocals for the album.

In 2002, XL Recordings re-released the album and as well put out an "Expanded Edition" featuring a bonus disc.

Writing and development

After creating a six-track "Lovertits" EP, Peaches moved to Berlin, Germany. While visiting her old friend Jason Beck, who was enjoying modest European success as Chilly Gonzales in Berlin, Peaches landed a one-night gig. On the merits of that show alone, Berlin's Kitty-Yo label signed her on the spot. The label offered her the chance to record The Teaches of Peaches back home in Toronto.

Composition

Musically, The Teaches of Peaches, like many other electroclash albums, draws from 1980s new wave music. It incorporates the Roland MC-505 and lo-fi beats in songs such as "AA XXX", which also features a roller-rink electro bassline. "Sucker" and "Rock Show" employ guitar and Runaways-like singing.

Fun Fun

Fun Fun were a popular Italian Italo disco/synthpop musical group during the 1980s. Their hits included "Colour My Love" and "Baila Bolero".

Producers Dario Raimondi and Alvaro Ugolini teamed up with studio vocalists Antonella Pepe, Angela Parisi and Ivana Spagna to create a bouncy, high-energy, dancefloor-friendly sound. Their first release, 1983's "Happy Station", found success in Italy and other parts of Europe, thanks to several extended versions, including the notorious "Scratch" version. It also reached number 1 in South Africa.

Upon receiving invitations for live performances, Raimondi and Ugolini decided to use models for Fun Fun's public image rather than the vocalists themselves, a common tactic used in the European dance music scene by artists like Baltimora and The Real McCoy. "Have Fun!", the band's first full album from 1984, featured Francesca Merola and Roberta Servelli as the on-stage faces for the group. "Have Fun!" featured other popular dance singles, including "Give Me Your Love," "Living In Japan" and the band's oft-covered signature hit "Colour My Love", which became popular in American nightclubs because of its insistent synth bassline and easily mixable percussion intro.

Peach

The peach (Prunus persica) is a deciduous tree native to the region of Northwest China between the Tarim Basin and the north slopes of the Kunlun Shan mountains, where it was first domesticated and cultivated. It bears an edible juicy fruit called a peach or a nectarine.

The specific epithet persica refers to its widespread cultivation in Persia, whence it was transplanted to Europe. It belongs to the genus Prunus which includes the cherry, apricot, almond and plum, in the rose family. The peach is classified with the almond in the subgenus Amygdalus, distinguished from the other subgenera by the corrugated seed shell.

Peach and nectarines are the same species, even though they are regarded commercially as different fruits. In contrast to peaches, whose fruits present the characteristic fuzz on the skin, nectarines are characterized by the absence of fruit-skin trichomes (fuzz-less fruit); genetic studies suggest nectarines are produced due to a recessive allele, whereas peaches are produced from a dominant allele for fuzzy skin.

Fuck the Pain Away

"Fuck the Pain Away" is a song by Canadian electronic artist Peaches. It appears on her second album The Teaches of Peaches, released in 2000 on Kitty-Yo. It became her breakthrough song and has since remained her signature song. Its widespread licensing in films as well as numerous official and unofficial cover versions (including a notable cover by of Montreal) has led to a sustained popularity for the song.

Writing and inspiration

The song combines low-fidelity, rumbling bass with snare drums from a Roland TR-909 to make a "clickity-clack" rhythm. Muted yelling sounds can be heard in the background.

The song's lyrics established Peaches' reputation as a sex-positive feminist. She uses euphemisms to present a sexually aggressive image. The lyrics include references to tit sucking and The Pretenders' frontwoman Chrissie Hynde. The line "Stay in school, cos it’s the best" alludes to Peaches' previous occupation as a teacher. Peaches' vocal performance was described as vampy, lustful, and insouciant. Her bold delivery holds "between self-empowerment and self-destruction."
