Despair is one of the Endless, fictional characters from Neil Gaiman's comic book series, The Sandman.
Despair is the twin sister of Desire. She is squat, flabby and pale-skinned, with black hair, gray eyes, and pointed teeth. Her voice is little more than a whisper, and she has no odor, but her shadow smells musky and pungent, like the skin of a snake. She does not wear clothes. On a finger of her left hand she wears a ring with a hook attached to it, with which she habitually carves her flesh. The hook is her sigil in the galleries of the other characters. Her realm is a gray space in which floats a white fog and countless mirrors, which are connected to mirrors in the human world, through which she looks on those who are in despair. The only other inhabitants of her realm are her pet rats.
Despair sometimes acts together with Desire when they are plotting against the elder Endless, most notably when Despair takes on a challenge with Morpheus over the life of Joshua Abraham Norton, seemingly at Desire's bidding. She is less distanced from the family than Desire, though, and seems to have some feeling at least for Delirium, and also seems to miss Destruction so much that she is able to manipulate Dream into feeling guilty over Destruction's abandoning of his duty. She does not say much, and consequently appears brusque, but her speech at Morpheus' wake in The Wake reveals her sympathy and feeling for him.

D'Israeli drawing Despair of the Endless From Neil Gaiman's Sandman Books at Birmingham Comic Con on 7/8/2011
The diminutive versions of the Endless from Neil Gaiman's Sandman mythos are back. Little Delirium throws a party for her dour sister Despair and invites siblings Dream, Destruction, Death, Destiny and Desire. Story and art by Jill Thompson!
Twenty-five years since THE SANDMAN changed the landscape of modern comics, Neil Gaiman's legendary series is back! THE SANDMAN: OVERTURE heralds New York Times best-selling writer Neil Gaiman's return to the art form that made him famous, ably abetted by artistic luminary JH Williams III (BATWOMAN, PROMETHEA), whose lush, widescreen images provide an epic scope to The Sandman's origin story. From the birth of a galaxy to the moment that Morpheus is captured, THE SANDMAN: OVERTURE will feature cameo appearances by fan-favorite characters such as The Corinthian, Merv Pumpkinhead and, of course, the Dream King's siblings: Death, Desire, Despair, Delirium, Destruction and Destiny. "People have often asked me what happened to Morpheus to make it possible for him to be captured in THE SANDMAN...
My 2nd in the tributes to the Endless. This one is for the 2nd oldest sibling Death. The song used is Ghost Train by Counting Crows. DISCLAIMER: I do not own the Sandman Chronicles those are owned by Neil Gaiman and the artists featured therein. Nor do I own Ghost Train that song belongs to Counting Crows. Also the artworks of Death that appear in the video that are not fro The Sandman Chronicles are from google images, Deviantart, and Photobucket and they are fantastic.
My 3rd in the tributes to The Endless Desire featuring the song Red Right Hand by Nick Cave. I felt this song fit Desire's personality and everything very well. Again please comment on these I would really like some feedback. DISCLAIMER! I do not own The Sandman Chronicles those belong to Neil Gaiman and all the artists and contributors who helped to create them. Nor do I own the song Red Right Hand that song is owned by Nick Cave and his record company. All the art featured herein was obtained from google images, DevinatArt and Photobucket and is amazing
This is my tribute to Destiny of the Endless. Destiny was particularly difficult to make a video for because he doesn't have much emotion, and pictures of him are VERY scarce... The song used is Framing Hanley's Not What They Said and is owned by the band and their record company. The Sandman Chronicles is owned by Neil Gaiman, DC Comics, Vertigo, and all the other writers featured within. I wil NOT be making any money from this video it is purely for entertainment purposes. If you like it please comment, like, and favorite. Be polite in your commenting please, thank you.
I can stand this video about as much as I can draw or speak Swedish (I CAN'T). But I did post it to Neil Gaiman's Twitter once upon a time when I used Twitter and he said he liked it so that was encouraging. Also I was twelve or thirteen when I did this. Animated by Jarku "Sage" Virtanen featuring music by Supergott and a character of Neil Gaiman's.
The last ones were just a joke. I mean Destruction, Destiny and Despair...because any good actor/actreess with a great make up and efects can do this. I think Tommy Lee Jones should be Destiny, or maybe someone like Al Pacino or Gary Oldman. And to Despair I really don't know, but I think she should look like a sumo fighter. LOL On my cast...: Johnny Depp is Sandman, Emily Browning is Death, Tori Amos is Delirium and Angelina Jolie is Desire. Tell me what you think about it. the song is Question! - SOAD *** Now-a-days I'm thinking about Evanna Lynch as Delirium, I just would change her hair to something more..colorful. And I was thinking Tilda Swinton or Hilary Swank definitly should play Desire because of their androgynous look. Oh yeah, I almost forgotten...I was thinking maybe Hug...
Living in Torment
Praying for the End
An end to the Agony
Cannot stand the Pain
Time is running out
Life is near the end
Yesterday's beyond my reach
Tomorrow Awaits my Death
Existence without reason
Disdain for all that's alive
Remembering the days of laughter
Realizing it was a Lie
Don't dwell in the past
Look to the Future
For the solution
That has to come
Nothing makes sense anymore
Living in complete confusion
Death is the only Constant
And the only solution
I'm losing faith in all I know
Nothing to ease the suffering
Only hope is Death's forgiveness
To guide me from Despair
Blood on my hands
Flowing from my veins
Death fills my last hours
Awaiting the Final Gift
Eternal Suffering
Crying out in Death
Condemned existence
At the Revelation of Death
Terror from the Grave
Never again to rise
Eternity of Darkness
Forever to fill my eyes
Misery of life
Grows nearer to Death
Never again to feel the Pain
