Dave Nichols
Dave Nichols was a prominent musician in Houston, Texas, particularly on the jazz scene between the years 1982 and 1996. Nichols was a freelance bassist and recording engineer/producer for many different artists in the Houston area.
Education & music career
He studied music at the University of St. Thomas in Houston. Nichols was in a band called "Stratus" which recorded four CDs of original virtuosity.
Dave Nichols died at the age of 33 after battling cancer. A group of Houston musicians completed a recording of Nichols' previously unrecorded original material just hours before his death; this was later released on a CD called "Waltz of Hope".

David Nichols - DMT And The Pineal Gland: Facts vs Fantasy.
The pineal gland has a romantic history, from pharaonic Egypt, where it was equated with the eye of Horus, through various religious traditions, where it was considered the seat of the soul, the third eye, etc. Recent incarnations of these notions have suggested that DMT is secreted by the pineal at birth, during dreaming, and at near death to produce out of body experiences. Scientific evidence, however, is not consistent with these ideas. The adult pineal gland weighs less than 0.2 grams, and its principal function is to produce 30 micrograms per day of melatonin, a hormone that regulates circadian rhythm through very high a nity interactions with melatonin receptors. 90-year old WWII Buffalo Soldier Veteran - John J. Nichols
Buffalo Soldiers was the name given to black troops by Native Americans for their hair which resemble the buffalo and their fighting spirit. Following the Civil War all black regiments were formed in 1866 and existed until 1951 when the armed forces were integrated. John J. Nichols joined the cavalry in 1942 and actually trained with horses before being sent to fight in Europe where he fought with the infantry. While I was in Appomattox I had the chance to talk with Nichols and he told me about serving with Jackie Robinson and Joe Lewis, about his disciplinary problems, training horses, and fighting in Europe. This talk presented a brief overview of what psychedelics are, and several significant events in this field in the past four decades. A comparison will be made between molecular structures, and how they were related to the structure of the neurotransmitter serotonin. The receptors that have been identified as targets for psychedelics were discussed, and their brain localization noted, followed by a brief description of where the receptors are located, and what happens inside the cell after the receptor is activated by a psychedelic. Scientific evidence, however, is not consistent with these ideas. The adult pineal gland weighs less than 0.2 grams, and its principal function is to produce 30 micrograms per day of melatonin, a hormone that regulates circadian rhythm through very high a nity interactions with melatonin receptors. Very minute concentrations of DMT have been detected in brain, but they are not sufficient to produce psychoactive effects. Alternative explanations will be presented to explain how stress and near death can produce altered states of consciousness without invoking DMT.

This presentation will focus on current understanding of the structure-activity relationships of psychedelics at the 5-HT2A receptor from a molecular perspective that has included synthesis of libraries of compounds, in vitro effects on cloned wild-type and mutated receptors, in vivo studies in rats, and computational chemistry.
Until his retirement in June 2012, David E. Nichols, PhD, was the Robert C. and Charlotte P. Anderson Distinguished Chair in Pharmacology, and a Distinguished Professor of Medicinal Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology at Purdue University. He also was an Adjunct Professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the Indiana University School of Medicine. He currently is an Adjunct Professor of Medicinal Chemistry at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.
Nichols received his PhD from the University of Iowa in 1973, followed by a postdoctoral stint in Pharmacology. From his time as a graduate student, Nichols focused his research on the relationship between molecular structure and the action of substances that modify behavior. His research took him to Purdue University in 1974, where he remained until his retirement this year.
His research was funded by government agencies for more than three decades. Internationally recognized for his research on centrally active drugs, he is one of the world's foremost authorities on psychedelic agents, and founded the nonprofit Heffter Research Institute in 1993. He also was a pioneer in the study of the medicinal chemistry of dopamine D1 receptor agonists, and in 1991 he and his colleagues first showed that dopamine D1 agonists had remarkable efficacy in a primate model of Parkinson's disease. He consults for the pharmaceutical industry and has served on numerous committees and government review groups.

Buffalo Soldiers was the name given to black troops by Native Americans for their hair which resemble the buffalo and their fighting spirit. Following the Civil War all black regiments were formed in 1866 and existed until 1951 when the armed forces were integrated.
John J. Nichols joined the cavalry in 1942 and actually trained with horses before being sent to fight in Europe where he fought with the infantry.
While I was in Appomattox I had the chance to talk with Nichols and he told me about serving with Jackie Robinson and Joe Lewis, about his disciplinary problems, training horses, and fighting in Europe.

This talk presented a brief overview of what psychedelics are, and several significant events in this field in the past four decades. A comparison will be made between molecular structures, and how they were related to the structure of the neurotransmitter serotonin. The receptors that have been identified as targets for psychedelics were discussed, and their brain localization noted, followed by a brief description of where the receptors are located, and what happens inside the cell after the receptor is activated by a psychedelic. Comments included about the different intracellular signaling pathways that can be activated, and which one(s) may be important for altering consciousness. A diagram of connectivity between key brain regions was discussed, which will show how some of the effects of psychedelics may be induced. Particular note will be made of the difficulty in identifying psychedelic molecules in the absence of human experimentation, which is illegal. There will then be a discussion of the use of drug discrimination to identify "LSD-like" molecules, and an example from the author's laboratory of the use of rigid analogues to identify important structural features of molecules such as LSD. Finally, a discussion was presented of the unique psychopharmacology of LSD, which occurs in two time-dependent phases, and the hypothesis that LSD may be converted in the body into an active metabolite that may be responsible for this time-dependent activity.
