Students in a St. Francis School history class in Hawaii had a special guest on Thursday, May 9 to talk about WWI. That was veteran character actor Don Stroud. Teacher Rick Saunders had shown the students Stroud's 1971 movie, "Von Richthofen and Brown," a story about the Canadian pilot, Roy Brown, who many believe shot down Germany's notorious "Red Baron." Stroud played Brown:

Stroud talked about what it was like to fly in the primitive open cockpit bi-planes made of canvas and wood and how easy it was for them to incinerate upon impact. He talked about surviving a crash while filming a key dogfight scene over a river in Ireland. Stroud said his surfing experience in Hawaii helped him keep his cool after he went down into the river strapped to his seat. He freed himself and saved the unconscious pilot.
Stroud took questions talked about his movie career which included more than 100 feature films. He showed a highlight reel of his movie.
Stroud's most recent work was in "Django Unchained," in which he was shot by Oscar winner Christoph Waltz.

Don Stroud
Donald Lee "Don" Stroud (born September 1, 1943) is an American actor and surfer who appeared in many films in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, and has starred in over 100 films and 175 television shows to date.
Early life
Stroud was born and grew up in Honolulu, Hawaii, the son of comedian and vaudevillien Clarence Stroud (of the Stroud Twins), and singer Ann Livermore (née McCormack), who toured the world with Frank Sinatra. Stroud's mother and stepfather owned and operated the popular "Embers Steak House" and nightclub where Ann performed nightly. Don thrived on the beach in Waikiki under the watchful eyes of such mentors as Blackout, Mud, Buckshot, Rabbit and Steamboat. Stroud learned much from these famous beach boys, and in 1960, at the age of 17, he placed fourth in the "Duke Kahanamoku World Surfing Championship" at Makaha, Hawaii. He also earned a black belt in the Hawaiian martial art of Kajukenbo Self Defense.
Career
Stroud was surfing at Waikiki when he was discovered by actor Troy Donahue who was filming ABC's Hawaiian Eye and needed a stunt double for his surfing scenes. Don, at 18, 6'2" and 175 pounds, stepped up and was hired on the spot. He loved the gig so much, he decided to go to Hollywood to give acting a try. Upon arriving in Los Angeles, he landed a variety of jobs, including parking cars, bouncer and then manager of the world famous Whisky a Go Go nightclub on the Sunset Strip, where such greats as Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix and Jim Morrison of the Doors appeared. It was at the "Whisky" that actor Sidney Poitier turned Don on to his acting career. Stroud went on to become one of Hollywood's great heavies and character actors.

Angel Unchained (1970) Full Movie
(aka Hells Angels Unchained) Following a gang fight, biker Angel (Don Stroud) calls it quits and leaves his gang, the Nomads, in pursuit of a new life. He meets hippie community leader Jonathan Tremaine (Luke Askew), who is running from the anti-hippie townsfolk. Angel is quick to fall in love with another hippie, Merilee (Tyne Daly). When the situation becomes too tough to handle, Angel is forced to ask the Nomads to help out the hippies. They agree to, but their ineptitude to fight calls for him to face the scathing village people alone. Portions of this movie were filmed on the property I currently live at in Mesa, AZ which is why I originally tracked it down....if you're a fellow local I'm sure you'll enjoy seeing how our fine city looked nearly 50 years ago!
