Plot: The rise and fall of salsa singer, Héctor Lavoe (1946-1993), as told from the perspective of his wife Puchi, who looks back from 2002. In the early 1960s, Héctor arrives in New York from Ponce, Puerto Rico. Success comes quickly. "The more he grew as an artist," Puchi says, "the more he sank as a person." It's a tale of talent - creating salsa with Willie Colón, with the Fania All Stars, and as a soloist - and a story of disintegration - fueled by drugs, alcohol, partying, and depression. Puchi's voice - proud and querulous - dominates off-stage as Héctor's does on.

Quotes:
[from trailer]::Puchi: It was good. It was bad. It was beautiful.
Hector Lavoe: I love you.::Puchi: You always love me when you're high.
Puchi: Hector never knew how much people loved him. And that's the thing. It's like he didn't want to know.
Puchi: What's the first thing you're gonna do?::Hector Lavoe: What?::Puchi: When you're famous, silly.::Hector Lavoe: Why are you so sure that I'm gonna be famous?::Puchi: Because I know these things, that's why.
Priscilla: [referring to Puerto Rico] Where were you raised on the island?::Puchi: Oh, um, no. THIS island.::Priscilla: Here?::Puchi: Right here. I don't even remember what a palm tree looks like.::Hector Lavoe: It doesn't matter where she was raised, cause she got me now. Palm trees, beaches, pork hash, in person. It's like Berlitz dining.::Puchi: Maybe, uh, one day I'll get back to Puerto Rico. I get there.::Hector Lavoe: What did I say? You're there. Next, you meet my father. He thinks he owns the island.::Priscilla: We're from Ponce. All of our family still lives there. Hector and I are the only ones here. The only ones left. So, how long have you guys known each other?::Puchi: Oh, days.::Hector Lavoe: But it's destiny. [Smiles at Puchi]::Priscilla: [In Spanish] And your family? They live here?::Puchi: Mm-hmm.::Priscilla: Oh, I forgot. You don't speak Spanish.::Puchi: No, I do. I do speak...::Priscilla: Well, what does your family do?::Puchi: [In an irriatated tone] Sell dope. Yeah. Why, are you with the FBI or something? Because we should get that out of the way right now. What are you...? You know what, Hector? I came here to eat, not to be grilled.
Priest: Do you, Hector...::Puchi: He does. Hector, say I do.::Hector Lavoe: [groggily] I do.::Priest: Puchi...::Puchi: I do.::[looks around menancingly]::Puchi: Anybody object?
Puchi: Hector always knew he was gonna make it. It was like he was prepared for it.
Hector Lavoe: [after being hospitalized] I can't sing the same. I can't smile the same.
Puchi: What ever happened to your brother?::Hector Lavoe: He died when he got here. He was supposed to take care of me.::Puchi: Well, I guess we'll just have to take care of each other, okay?
Puchi: You know we haven't been straight for three hours a day, for what, 20 years? Not since we met. And we just go on with life like this. I love you, you know, but it's impossible, Puchi.::Puchi: Impossible? Impossible? Oh, I get it. Now that our son is dead, it all comes clear to you? I'm this horrible bitch and you're a great guy? And maybe the best thing to do is make it official now? Is that what you're saying Hector? All of a sudden a fucking light bulb went off in your head and now you're realizing you and me ain't good together? That's what you're fucking saying to me, Hector? So we're just gonna just break things up to fix it up? That's your fucking genius idea? Fix WHAT up? NOW? You f... you fucking selfish bastard. [walks towards the door, then turns and faces Hector] You can NEVER leave me.
