We wish you all a happy new year, good health and beware of the "Ship Of Fools"!

This may be programmatic for all TwilghtZoners in 2018! - RYP and Gyro1966

the iNMaTES "Shot in the Dark" 1980

UK garage rock / pub rock group formed late 70's with a short peak in the early 80's but a decades long career……Hit the charts 1979 with their first single, a cover of "Dirty Water", a 60's garagerock classic by The Standells. This single was followed by two albums very much in the vain of Dr. Feelgood and also produced by their producer Vic Maile. Then lead singer Bill Hurley had to take a break and the group never reached the same level of succes and attention, though they have continued to perform and release sporadically. - discogstrax:

The Metalunas "X-Minus-One" 1999

Mark Brodie's wonderful new concept album has finally arrived. It features his classic crunchy surf guitar sound, some well placed organ, and his wonderful writing. Mark has redefined small combo surf. Mark Cinnamon - bass and Rod Moore - drums support Mark's guitar work and occasional organ fills. If you liked Mark Brodie & the Beaver Patrol's incredible "Shores Of Hell" CD, you'll like this as well. An excellent adventure in surf 'n' space. - Phil DirtMark Brodie's specialty has been--more or less-- traditional instrumental guitar surfing music. Why mess with a good thing by adding neo-modern reinterpretations? X-MINUS-ONE is his 3rd album, and to date my fave of his. With The Metalunas he's plowing the same field as Man Or Astro-Man-- mixing guitar instros with 50's sci-fi space schlock. It's a fun mixture, and brings up memories of watching exciting (and often tacky) space films on Saturday afternoons. A few times on the album there are surprisingly long passages that could have come straight from even earlier RADIO shows, all adding to the effect. Among the highlights are "Shields Up!" (a cover of "Space Race" by The Hodads, also done by The Space Cossacks), "Blast Off!", and "Satellite Of Mystery", a quiet, moody piece that shows off Brodie's beautiful use of organ-- probably my favorite track here.
I have to say I enjoy The Metalunas MORE than anything I've heard by M.O.A., and look forward to hearing the follow-up, SWINGIN' PLANET. For more, also check out THE SHORES OF HELL by Mark Brodie & The Beaver Patrol (1996) and ESPIONAGE GARAGE by The Saboteurs (1998-- also with Brodie). And if space-surf turns your knobs, be sure to check out The Space Cossacks' INTERSTELLAR STOMP and TSAR WARS, as well as Destination: Earth's TRAPPED IN HYPERSPACE (my #1 album of the year 2000!!) and ADVENTURES IN NEWSPACE (2001). - By Henry R. "Ice Cold" (Buffalo Bop 55162)

The German Buffalo Bop label has been reissuing rare and obscure rockabilly and rock 'n' roll since the 70s - starting with LPs and switching over to CDs in the early 90s…...Buffalo Bop CDs usually have 30 tracks of rockabilly and rock 'n' roll from the 50s and early 60s - often very rare sides. Many of the issues have a subject or stylistic theme (juvenile delinquents, hot rods, trains, women singers, instrumentals, etc.). The tracks are mostly mastered from 45s and the sound quality is generally excellent - particularly on the later issues. Each CD comes with a booklet with a cover painting evocative of the music within and artist photos and label shots inside. With so many reissues available there are inevitably some duplications with other reissues but nevertheless there is a ton of great music available on these CDs not available elsewhere.

"Golden Era Of Doowops" Herald Records 1953-1963 (Relic 7059)

Herald Records existed for a good deal longer than most independent R&B labels, 1953 through 1963…...Founded by Freddie Mendelsohn, the company started off with a pair of hard blues recordings by Eddie Boyd and Little Walter Jacobs, but soon after, pressing plant owner Al Silver came aboard with another new partner -- later buying out Mendelsohn -- and transformed Herald into an R&B specialty label. The company began recording R&B harmony groups, including the Rocketeers and the Five Willows; it was in 1955 that they had their first success with the Nutmegs' "Story Untold," and later that year scored a major hit with "When You Dance" by the Turbans. Later acts included the Mint Juleps, Little Butchie Saunders and His Buddies, and the Debonaires. Beginning in 1958, the company began courting the rock & roll market with acts such as the Mello Kings, the Desires, and the Loungers, but it was Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs with "Stay," a monster hit in 1960, who did the best for the label. This 28-song collection includes all of Herald's biggest R&B and rock & roll hits, starting with the mid-1950s doo wop classic "Story Untold," driven by Leroy Griffin's impassioned lead singing. The Debonaires sing well enough on "Darling," but the most notable attribute of the pleasant midtempo ballad is the searing guitar solo by arranger Wesley L. Jackson. The Heralds, formed out of the Billy Dawn Quartet and the Four Dukes, offer more of a bluesy sound, complete with a raunchy band sound on "Gonna Love You Everyday," which, properly speaking, belongs on a blues rather than a doo wop anthology. From later in he label's history, "Teenage Bells" by the Loungers is a surprise, a lively and pleasing number that might easily have been a hit, but went unreleased until now. "Betty My Own" by the Dynamics is another diamond in the rough, a soaring, impassioned ballad with a gentle, unobtrusive orchestral accompaniment. "I Wanna Holler" and "Lindy Lou" by Little Butchie Saunders and His Buddies were well-intentioned attempt to treads on Frankie Lymon territory, and the latter, in particular, was a pretty fair rock & roll number, and rather catchy. The sound on this collection is, as with most of Relic Records' releases, extraordinary.

The Original Sins "Party's Over" 1990

Here's a band from my back yard, I had the pleasure of seeing live a few times over the years. The Original Sins were a four piece from Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, that began around 1987…...Their last LP was in 1997, but it's possible they may still get together once in a while in some form. John Terlesky also spent time in The Creatures, as well as a few other projects, such as : Fuzzface, Crush Nova, Suffacox, Brother JT, and Vibrolux. As of 2007 he was still releasing records under Brother JT, but I'm not sure if he's still doing that either. The sins released at least 9 full lengths, and a half a dozen singles. This is my favorite Sins record, oddly enough, it was released on the Australian Dog Meat Label. Party's Over is a compilation of songs, and unreleased outtakes from their The Hardest Way cd, as well as a remix from their 1987 Bar None Single. Here's a couple of articles you can check out. - shotgunsolution.blogspot.Line Up:
John Terlesky - Vocals, Guitar / Dan McKinney - Keyboards / Ken Bussiere - Bass / Dave Ferrara - Drums

"Chills & Fever" The Dot Records Story 1955-1962

POSITIVE POINTS:
1 In the 75 songs, there are many charted hits plus rare gems.
2 The songs are all original versions.
3 The sound is clean with no hiss.
4 The label & number is listed, plus composers and year of release
5 A nice essay
6 I bought this from Amazon.co.uk for about £4 when the Canadian $ was higher. Now the price is definitely right if you buy from seller.
HISTORY: Dot Records label was founded by Randolph C Wood, who ran an electrical appliance store in Tennessee, and started a mail-order business in 1948. In just 2 years, the mail-order concern overtook the store as the main source of income. In 1956, Wood moved the company to Hollywood, and much of the music would, from then on, be bought in or leased from independent producers. This actually worked in Dot’s favour, as smaller specialist companies had their finger on the pulse and would often furnish them with ready-made hits.
Dot’s biggest success was singer Pat Boone, who made his name with safe ‘vanilla’ versions of recordings by black artists. Other major artists include Tab Hunter, Fontaine Sisters (Marge, Bea and Geri Fontaine), Billy Vaughan, and later, Lawrence Welk. In my 90 albums by Lawrence Welk, the boss name Randy Wood would also appear.
Dot Records was sold to Paramount Pictures in 1957 for 3 million dollars, but founder Wood remained with the label for another decade. Their Sixties hits came with pop artists like Louis Prima, Keely Smith, Dodie Stevens, but the label rode the brief instrumental wave of popularity with the Chantays and Surfaris. Dot re-invented itself as a country label in the Seventies, but the back catalogue has passed through many hands.
Randy Wood died at the age of 94 in La Jolla, California in April 2011. The legend of the record company he created lives on in the music collected in this compilation.
CONTENT: This 3 CD set contains 75 songs from 1955 – 1962. To appreciate the value of the set and impact on the music industry, one can listen to these songs. I have compiled a detailed song listing (with chart position, year and personal comments) which is as follows:

FINAL THOUGHTS: I guess I grew up with the Dot Records label, with Pat Boone, Billy Vaughan, and later Lawrence Welk who switched from Coral to Dot in 1960. There is no Chantays or Surfaris because their hits are in 1963. You wonder why One Day Music stopped at 1962. The reason is probably due to the Copyright Law change, 1962 being the last year in the public domain. Anyway, there are many cherished hits and rare gems. You certainly get good value. The sound is alright. I enjoyed the entire set immensely. This brings back many happy memories of my teenager years. This set is highly recommended for all music lovers and collectors.

Holly Golightly "Truly She Is None Other" 2003

Holly Golightly's Truly She Is None Other is another fine slice of low-key bluesy garage pop from the former Headcoatee and current White Stripes crony…...Unlike that band, however, Golightly doesn't have much truck for noise and clatter; she is more apt to use honey and guile to capture her listeners. Tracks like "One Neck," "Walk a Mile," and "All Around the Houses" are downright slinky with her double-tracked, deadpan voice; the lo-fi, high-quality production (courtesy of Liam Watson); and resolutely mid-tempo approach. Her songs are perfect for late nights full of melancholy and restraint. Even songs like "You Have Yet to Win" and "She Said," which might be considered examples of the dreaded "rocking out," are rocked out in fine, reserved style, never breaking a sweat -- merely a heart or two. Most of the tunes (bar the previously mentioned "Fox" song) are Golightly originals, but the album also has a foray into acoustic blues with a convincing cover of Charles Brown's harrowing "Black Night" as well as covers of two little-known Kinks tracks: the rollicking "Time Will Tell" and the minor-key weeper "Tell Me Now So I Know," which are almost note-perfect (the vocal on the latter is one of her best ever). Truly She Is None Other is also one of Golightly's best albums; packed with great songs and performances, it re-establishes Golightly as a beacon of grace and restraint in a world sadly bereft of both. -  AllMusic Review by Tim Sendratrax:

"TWISTIN’ TIME" Vol. 1

Compilation of very cool and rare twist records from the early sixties. Wacky collection, this should appeal to those who like The Big Itch series and other comps in that weird vein! After Chubby Checker had a #1 hit with Hank Ballard’s “The Twist”, there was an avalanche of twist records released. Out of this mountain of records, we have culled the most rockin’, novel, stupid, inept and twistacular examples from an amazing time in American history! (Tubby Chess, liner notes)traxfromwax:

"Schoolday Blues" (Buffalo Bop 55158)

Schoolday Blues is yet another compilation from the folks at Buffalo Bop Records, the label for which, seemingly, no rockabilly-style single is too obscure to try and compile and sell -- and God bless 'em for it!.....The Love Brothers, evidently of Mississippi, open the set with "Baby, I'll Never Let You Go," cut for the By-Love label of Greenville, MS, sometime during the Eisenhower administration -- it owes a bit to "Be-Bop-a-Lula" and these boys didn't harmonize so much as shout in unison, but it does have a raw, bracing power. Evans Carroll and the Tempos, from the Bangar label, kick things up a notch with some Jerry Lee Lewis-style piano (and vocals) over a proto-psychobilly guitar riff, on "Come Back Baby," and the Jades, from the Oxboro label, throw the disc into overdrive with "Blue Black Hair." The Five Spots are a more traditional rockabilly outfit, fast tempos and pounding piano over a frenetic rhythm guitar while the drummer attacks the high-hat and the singer exhorts his would-be girlfriend to "Get With It." Frank Evans & the Topnotchers try for a more virtuoso-style, countrified approach and his vocal charisma nearly pulls off "Gotta Get Some Money," a close cousin to "Summertime Blues." "Make Love to Me" isn't quite as salacious as its title might lead one to expect -- Jack Scalese sings the postadenoidal lament, but producer Jack McFadden chose to emphasize the instrumental skills of Scalese's band, the Escorts; McFadden reversed himself on "Lucky Man," moving the singer forward in relation to the band, except for the prodigious lead guitar. Jack & the Knights don't sound like all that much, except for their drummer, whose attack on the skins almost overwhelms everyone but the singer and, on one break, the lead guitarist. The title track is the work of Pierre Maheu, who sang with a decided country twang -- the student lament went out from Glo Records credited to Ron and His Rattletones, whose ranks includes a sax and guitar. Slightly more effective is Billy Love's "I'll Find My Way," a pounding rocker with a call-and-response pattern to the vocal, between Love and a girl chorus. "Rockin' Country Fever" is a hybrid single, a rocking country number played and sung frantically by the Morris Brothers Band of Waynesborough, PA, who wind tighter with each chorus. Eddie Cash is one of a handful of singers here who resemble Elvis Presley vocally, no surprise in his case as he cut "Be My Baby" for Peak Records of Memphis, who clearly lacked Sam Phillips' luck at Sun. The delightfully named Danny & the Nitro-Tones cut the rock/novelty tune "International Whirl" -- a trip around the world girl by girl, set to a rocking beat -- for their own Nitro Records imprint. The Hazeltones featuring Paul Brody obviously listened a bit too much to "Heartbreak Hotel" before doing "I'm Just a Fool." Bob and the Bandits, by contrast, sound a lot like a cross between the Crickets featuring Buddy Holly, and the Bobby Fuller Four -- whatever happened them, or to Bob Reinhardt, or to Loki Records, is anyone's guess, but "I'm Gonna Stop Cryin'" is one of the highlights of the Buffalo Bop library; ditto the raw yet surprisingly sophisticated "Toe to Toe" by Frankie Mann and the Meteors; and John Sowell's "So Help Me Hannah," issued by Citation Records of Boston, MA, should probably have been on Robert Gordon's listening list in the 1970s. Jimmy Collins' rhythm guitar- and sax-heavy rocker "Just One More Time," from the J&S label from Lord-knows-where, sounds a bit like a lost Andy Starr track, while the Lancers' "My Little Girl," issued by Panther Records, kicks the beat into overdrive, a frantic, screaming rockabilly number with slashing guitars that sound several decades early in their arrival. The Spekulations, who evidently hailed from somewhere around Charlotte, NC, and recorded their "Hulu Hoop" at Arthur Smith Studios there, keep the beat frantic, even if the playing and singing is a bit sloppier and closer to garage punk than classic rockabilly. "Proof of Your Love" has an ominous, repetitive quality that gives it a dark, Gene Vincent-like tone, whereas Jim White and the Kingsmen sound like the reincarnation of Buddy Holly & the Crickets on "Teenage Doll," cut in Fort Smith, AR, by UBC Records -- one hopes the singer and guitarist made it somewhere, because they had the Crickets' sound down about as well as anyone this side of Bobby Fuller. Precisely who Arbis Hanyel was is anyone's guess -- that he sang with a dirty old man's leer is amply represented on the raunchy "Roadhouse Rock," which comes from way, way back in hillbilly territory; with a few changes, this could've been a Trumpet Records blues release. Speaking of which, "Cranberry Blues" is an entertaining piece of hillbilly nonsense with a high-wattage guitar break, courtesy of Robert Williams & the Groovers on the Tip-Top label. The frenetic "Bop 'n' Stroll" is from even further back in country territory, Aubrey Cagle looking to be more of Hank Snow's generation than Elvis Presley's. The Tradewinds sax- and rhythm-heavy "Wildwood Twist" is built on a catchy repetitive riff that makes it perfect as an under-two-minute dance number. One wonders what county south of the Mason-Dixon Line Pierre Simoncini came from, but he's got the lean, dark side of country cum rockabilly down right, in the obvious country adaptation "Buddy Went a-Courtin'." Ken Carlisle is a little too poppish for this collection, "I'm Just Walkin' in the Rain" sounding like a solid post-1960 Elvis number, rather than emulating the King's stripped-down Memphis originals, but he had charisma that makes it worth hearing. "The Long Blond Curls" is a nicely lusty rocker with a leisurely beat and a powerful lead vocal by Joey Rand and an economical but reasonably exciting guitar break. And it all ends on "Tears," a pumped-up country-based ballad with a too-slow beat from a less-than-perfect master by Hank Englund & the Ship-Mates. Apart from the last track, everything on this CD is in very good sonic shape -- as usual with Buffalo Bop's releases, there is no release information on any of the artists, but as is also usual for this label, more than a decade into their history, the quality of the music is strong enough to carry the release.(Bruce Eder, Allmusic)

The Odd Numbers "A Guide to Modern Living" 1997 + "Odd Numbers / Hi-Fives" Split G.I. 7"/45rpm

"I saw these guys back in 1997 in Costa Mesa, CA. They were playing a scooter rally at an Art Gallery and just blew the doors off the place. I bought this CD and these two split singles, but I lost track of them after that. I don't know if they released any more records. Hope you and your readers enjoy." - Billy KTHE INSIDE COVER of the new Odd Numbers album, A Guide to Modern Living (Eight One Nine Productions), depicts a dreary sky over a pier in Brighton, England.Any Who or Jam fan would place the shot from Quadrophenia or Setting Sons immediately and respectively. "I took that on vacation four years ago," guitarist and vocalist Dave Baisa says. "That was one of a few Quadrophenia references on the album. I wanted to have that kind of look." It was two years ago when the Odd Numbers flew off to Europe to perform on the continent's rock-festival circuit. The European tour turned tragic when drummer John Cummings suffered a complex leg fracture in a motorcycle mishap. Cummings is progressing well, Baisa says. Until Cummings is 100 percent, Dave Conrad is filling in on the drumkit......The tour gave the Odd Numbers confidence and incentive to continue as a band. "It was an ultimatum," Baisa says. "We had to keep going on. Once we realized we could work Europe and get stuff taken care of, we were getting stoked again." A Guide to Modern Living is the result of the group's resurgence. The album moves from the tinny AM radio sound of the Odd Numbers' early singles into thick, sculpted mod (not modern) rock grooves. "The Easy Life," "Another Day" and "When the World Was Young" are classic retro rock, beefed up with bigger production values. The addition of Modesto Briseño and Scott Burnhill on horns pumps up the sound even more.
Another European tour is scheduled for the end of April, but don't expect the Odd Numbers to forsake San Jose for Europe or L.A. The band is inextricably linked to this area, especially the front bar at the Usual in downtown San Jose. "We have a good reception in San Jose," Baisa says. "It's always been good for us. I wish every place was San Jose, actually." - By Todd S. Inouetrax:

"Trading Kisses" (Buffalo Bop 55157)

Trading Kisses is another rockabilly / rock & roll compilation from Buffalo Bop, the label that seems to have beaten the bushes for the most obscure local recordings of the 1950s and early 1960s…...The results here are a little more uneven than their best, as they either didn't try, or weren't able to find enough edgy rockabilly to fill the 30 slots on the CD. But where they do get it right, it's enjoyable on a level unique to this label. Eddie Cash sounds like Ral Donner at his most Elvis Presley-like on "Doing All Right," out of Memphis, with some powerful guitar and someone of considerable skill pounding away on the ivories. Jesse Lee King & His Crowns come off as a pure backwoods rockabilly outfit, appropriately enough from the Pines label from Jasper, Texas. The Sundowners, out of Texas, had some of what it took -- great breaks if a little weak in the main body of the song -- on "Live It Up," fronted by lead singer Wilbur Martin. And for a change of pace, "Tip Toe" is more of a teen pop novelty song, of the kind that the Earls excelled at, and is pleasant enough, though ideally it would better belong on a good white doo wop collection. Jackie Terrell is, similarly, more of a novelty-type rock & roller, and "I'm Gonna Look for You" comes off like a good piece of faux rock & roll -- Terrell's "I Stopped and I Thought" is a little bit more substantial. Don Bailey is a rock & roll crooner coming out of country-pop, and closer to post-1960 Elvis in his lighter moments than to anything from the 1950s. "Nervous Wreck" by Jesse Lee King, is close to a lost classic, with the odd touch of a trumpet somewhere in its mix of instruments. "She's Mine," by the Uptowners, is a fine Bo Diddley-based piece of rockabilly out of Fort Worth, Texas, while "Butter Ball," by Max Uballez, is closer in spirit to Carl Perkins. The title track, by Matt Lucas, is an enjoyable if unadventurous piece of straight-ahead rock & roll, perhaps a little too heavy on the Jordanaires-type chorus for some listeners' tastes. Jimmy Gray's "Chicksville USA" is the real article, a piece of high-powered, name-dropping rock & roll that came out of Shasta Records, no less, the label owned by former singing cowboy Jimmy Wakely. And "Party Doll" gets rougher treatment from Don Ellis & the Royal Dukes -- working on the Bee Records label, distributed by Roulette -- than Buddy Knox ever gave it. Larry Tamblyn later brushed with stardom as a member of the Standells, but he's still doing adenoidal teen rock & roll on "Patty Ann," an original with some surprisingly suggestive lyrics, but no hint on the record of the punk sneer that would carry him to stardom. A lot of the rest is pleasant, eminently danceable, if not memorable rock & roll, by people who never got anywhere near the heights to which Tamblyn ascended. Dick Donato's "Big Mean Blues" is just that, and a change of pace from a big part of this compilation, with a guitar-driven break and a raunchy sound throughout. The even bluesier "Sing Sing Sing" by Dean Beard, issued as a folk-style record, sounds like rockabilly trying to insinuate itself into the college crowd. Roc LaRue's "Baby Take Me Back" could pass for a Robert Gordon demo; Harold Casner's "That Is Why" is an original that has the singer sounding like Elvis circa G.I. Blues, but with a leaner band; Robin Montgomery's "Go Johnny," by contrast, is like a sequel to Chuck Berry's "Bye Bye Johnny" that only goes wrong with a not sufficiently energetic piano-driven break. Bo Diddley's influence runs throughout the beat and sound of both the Paley Brothers' "Hey Doll Baby" and "Arkansas Jane," by the Millionaires. The makers try to get even more primitive with Arnie Ginsburg & the 3-D's and "Pal Mal Rock," but it ends up a little too clunky as a recording -- as Ginsburg was evidently called "the Velvet Voice" and the song was released on Velvet Voice records, it can be considered a vanity record. Gil Gilroy & the Jolly Rockers make up for the lapse, with a Stratocaster-wielding player and a saxman on the side, who achieve a genuine, bracing primitive intensity on the CD's last track, "Laura Lee.”(Bruce Eder, Allmusic)

"The Golden Era Of Doo-Wops" Groups Of Parrot Records (Relic 7053)

Among the rarest R&B labels ever based in Chicago, Parrot Records, which existed from 1953 until 1956, was essentially a one-man operation, the dream-child of concert promoter and sometime deejay Al Benson…...Operated mostly out of Benson's home, Parrot never had any serious distribution outside of the Chicago area. The highlight of this collection is the four songs cut by the Flamingos, who came to Parrot after a stay with Chance Records and cut their first Parrot release, "Dream of a Lifetime," in late 1954. The group's stay on Parrot only lasted for two singles, after which they jumped to Chess-Checker -- the CD is worth the price just for their sultry-yet-jumping "Get With It," one of the best numbers that the group ever cut; it's so good that it's worth hearing just for the band's break. The rest of this collection is just as alluring -- the Rockettes' smooth, sultry R&B was almost retro for the 1950s, based in a post-big band sound with some '40s pop and jazz influences (they toured with jazz saxman Illinois Jacquet in 1953 and '54); their "Rockin' At Midnight" (a rewrite of "Good Rockin' Tonight") bridges the gap between the '40s and '50s-style R&B. Their work had a good beat and was extremely catchy, however, and is nicely dressed up by the soaring sax of Paul Bascomb -- Benson knew how to recruit a backing band. And then there are the Orchids, led by Gilbert Warren, a doo wop outfit that must rate as one of the most soulful and rocking vocal ensembles of the period, melding R&B with more teen-oriented rock & roll themes. The sound is superb throughout.(Bruce Eder, Allmusic)

"Poison Ivy" Gems From the Atco Vaults 1959-1962 CD 1-3

HISTORY: When one mentions Atco label, I would naturally think of Bobby Darin, Coasters and Ben E. King. Atco Records was a United States-based subsidiary label of Atlantic Records, its name simply an abbreviation of ATlantic COrporation. Founded by Herb Abramson in 1955 on his return from military service, it was initially intended as an outlet for artists and groups whose image didn’t fit its parent label, for at the time Atlantic was geared towards blues, jazz and R&B.
Atco Records also included artists, such as Mr. Acker Bilk, Sonny & Cher, Buffalo Springfield, Vanila Fudge and later the Bee Gees, Eric Clapton, Pete Townshend, Yes and Genesis.
CONTENT: This 3 CD set has 60 songs, with truly gems from the Atco vaults from 1959 – 1962. Since the website does not have a song listing, I have compiled a detailed song listing (with chart position in US and UK, year and my personal comments), which is as follows:

The Paybacks "Harder And Harder" 2004

Harder and Harder, the second album from Detroit's Paybacks, is a blistering collection of dirty, metallic garage rock songs…...Fronted by the androgynous, whiskey-voiced Wendy Case -- who is easily the toughest chick in rock since the days when Joan Jett loved rock & roll this much -- the band is equal parts swagger and stagger as it plugs away on melodic anthems like "Bright Side" and the glittery blues of "Jumpy." If scorching rockers like "Superrider" and "Scotch Love" assert how powerful and unrelenting this Motor City quartet can be, the soulfully executed ballad "Can You Drive?" suggests the band can do more than raise hell. But by calling this sonic firecracker Harder and Harder, the Paybacks will never be accused of false advertising. - AllMusic Review by John D. Luerssen

"Twistin Rumble" Vol 8

A speaker-twanging spectacular – filled with raw rare singles in a variety of genres – from soul to blues to R&B, with some sharp-edged rockers thrown into the mix for good measure!..…The package is overflowing with goodness – lots of romping rhythms that are definitely pulled from the twist generation, but which are light years away from the sounds of Chubby Checker! Many of these cuts would be right at home on one of those cool Popcorn Soul collections from years back – and would be perfect for blasting out of a shaggy ol' jukebox in some hidden streetcorner juke joint. Titles include "Do The Dive" by Ronnie Fuller, "Limbo" by The Capris, "Pony Twist" by Sonny & The Premiers, "Mister Mod" by The Latin Dimension, "The Rooster" by Gabriel & His Angels, "Pretty Mama Blues" by Arthur Griswald, "Good Food" by Menard Rogers, "Wabba Suzy Q" by Ace Holder, and "Catwalk" by Tiny Fuller. "Jungle Rock" (Buffalo Bop 55156)

Collection of wild 50s and early 60s based around the theme of the jungle including The Lion by Duke Mitchell, Deep In The Jungle, Parts 1 & 2 by Lincoln Chase, Jungle Rock by Bo & Joe & The Niteriders, Jungle Boogie by Ronny & Jonny, Jungle Call by The "Rockin'" Raymonds, Screaming (Part 2) by The Metropolitans, Voo-Doo Queen & The Medicine Man by Bill James & The Hex-O-Tones, Un-gowa by The Rimfires and others. Lots of the tracks feature wild and crazy animal and Tarzan sound effects. (Roots & Rhythm)The German Buffalo Bop label has been reissuing rare and obscure rockabilly and rock 'n' roll since the 70s - starting with LPs and switching over to CDs in the early 90s. Buffalo Bop CDs usually have 30 tracks of rockabilly and rock 'n' roll from the 50s and early 60s - often very rare sides.

"A Midnight Christmas Mess" - Vol 1 + !Oh! No! Not Another… midnight Christmas Mess again!!" - Vol 2 + "It's Midnight Christmas Xmess" - Vol 3

One of the most obscure albums I'll recommend within these pages is A Midnight Christmas Mess (1984) and its two follow-ups - Midnight Christmas Mess Again!! (1986) and Midnight Christmas Mess Part III (1987) - released by New York independent label-cum-record store, Midnight Records. Both on their label (active 1985-1989) and in their store (still alive and kicking), Midnight focuses on 60's garage rock, proto-punk, and psychedelia, as well as bands who continue in that tradition. Their Christmas LP series consisted of all-new recordings by largely now-forgotten East Coast bands, and the first volume is really a peach - non-stop nuggets of original Christmas songs that really, truly rock. The pickings are a little slimmer on the second and third editions, but fans of the genre will dig all three platters.
Bear in mind, the production is programmatically lo-fi, but if you love garage rock, you're used to that by now! Sadly, the Midnight Christmas Mess records are quite out-of-print and have never been reissued on CD. Last time I looked, they're not even listed in the Amazon database, and they are rarely hawked on eBay. But, Midnight Records - still around after all these years - claimed to have some vinyl copies available for mail order.
