The Mo-dettes "The Story So Far..." 1980 + Peel Session 02.04.1980

"Ramona! Jane! Kate! June! The Mo-dettes are gonna steal your boyfriend!!!"The Mo-dettes (that's MODE-ettes, not modettes! These girls were no mods!) were an all-girl punk band formed in London in 1979. If you've heard early Raincoats or Slits stuff, or better yet LiLiPUT or Girls at Our Best, you should have an idea of what they sounded like. In fact Kate Korus, the Mo-dettes' guitarist even played with the Slits for a while, as well as the Castrators. Kate moved to London from the U.S. in the mid 70's and met June Miles-Kingston (who had previously played drums with Richard Dudanski in the Banks Of Dresden) on the set of The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle, where they were both working as musicians. Jane Crockford (the bassist) was also hanging around the GRnRS set, though I'm not sure if she was working, she might just have been there because she had been sharing a flat with Johnny Rotten and Sid Vicious after running away from home. Somebody eventually introduced the girls to Ramona Carlier (the lead singer), who had studied ballet in Switzerland before moving to London, apparently because there wasn't enough of a punk-rock scene back at home. And so the Mo-dettes were born. Hang on to your boyfriends.
The Mo-dettes played their first show at Acklam Hall, opening for the Vincent Units, and released their first single "White Mice", b/w "Masochistic Opposite" on their own label, Mode. They released several other singles after that and an album, but their first single remained their biggest hit. The group's last single came out in 1981, and though they did record some more material after this none of it was released. Shortly after the last 7" came out, the Mo-dettes got a second guitarist, Melissa Ritter, who played her first show as a Mo-dette just four days after joining the band. In February of 1982 Ramona quit and June sang for a couple months until Sue Slack joined as their new singer, but then Kate quit too, and as it was Kate that had started the whole thing in the first place the Mo-dettes didn't last much longer once she was gone.
In the late 80's June Miles-Kingston played drums for a band called the Communards, put out a solo single on Go! Discs and collaborated on some stuff with Fun Boy Three and Everything but the Girl. Kate Korus recorded a single with Jenny from the Belle Stars.
It seems that the Mo-dettes weren't appreciated by all of their female peers. In an interview with Nardwuar, the Human Serviette, Jane Wiedlin of the Go-Go's said "The Mo-Dettes were always really mean to us," when asked if the Go-go's had ever played shows with the Mo-dettes. Nardwuar asked Jane why and she elaborated "I don't know. I think they were just mean." Another band, the Dolly Mixture, had a song called "How come you're such a hit with the boys, Jane?" that is purportedly about Jane Crockford, and listening to the song one gets the impression that Jane Crockford was not a hit with the Dolly Mixture. I guess the Mo-dettes were not nice. The Mo-dettes:

Wild Billy Childish & CTMF - Sq 1 - 2016
Damaged Goods - DAMGOOD 452CD
ripped to MP3 @320
Includes Scans

Childish has lost none of his urgency or vibrancy and as the title suggests SQ1 is no musical departure. Childish and his latest group start at square one again and find originality in the repetition of new beginnings. CTMF wrestle songs from the moment with abandon and grace, while their zen punk frontman weaves brutally honest poetry in his classic straight edge delivery.

Containing kinetic, tight but not over-polished songs of searingly honest confessions, call to arms subversion of commercial music and self-reflection this album manages the rare feat of being both inspiring and high quality from start to finish whilst retaining an almost amateurish charm. Childish pulls off English eccentricity and punk pastiche without sounding like a version of anyone but CTMF.

Twelve outsider pop art gems later and you’re left knowing this is the real deal: a living legend, an underground artist, poet and family man who we should cherish dearly and celebrate as he releases his latest debut album.

Tracks:
01 A Song For Kylie Minogue
02 Sq 1
03 Turn And Run
04 The Good Mind
05 It Points To The Clue
06 By The Way Of Love And Hate
07 CTMF
08 A Glimpse Of Another Time
09 When I think About You

The Eyes Of Mind - Tales Of The Turquoise Umbrella -1984

vinyl rip (not mine) to mp@320 with scans

Back on December 12, RYP shared the Battle of The Garages Vol. 3 - The Paisley Underground.
"Drama, Drama" from this band was included in that compilation. Here is their one and only album. As received, that particular track was added as a bonus track.

This has a wonderfully trippy paisley-psych-pop sound.

From the back cover: Let's go back to California. The Eyes Of Mind were a spinoff from L.A psychpunk geniuses Three O'Clock, this band had an even more fey, marvelously twee sound that was so reminiscent of British art pop circa 1967 that they were hooked up with original British production wizard Mark Wirtz (Tomorrow, etc...) who brought all his Abbey Road skills to bear in creating this endlessly wonderful album, the band's only surviving epitaph. Members included Jamie Phelan (guitar, lead vocals), Mark Kuhlman (Keyboards, harmony vocals), Rick Tracy (bass) and finally Troy Howell (drums) who had previously played with Michael Quercio in Salvation Army.

Tracks

01 Dream Life
02 Alice
03 With You Again
04 She Only Knows
05 Time
06 Yesterday's Gone
07 She's Got Stars
08 The Game
09 Train
10 This Place Before
11 Drama Drama (Bonus)

Nice to see this. I remember a Trouser Press review on them that began "Imagine four Chrissie Hyndes in one band and you'll begin to get an idea of what the Mo-Dettes are like." I need to find that issue so I can read alongside listening -- thereby totally recreating my teen years.

Ida (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ida_(band))

Founder member are Elisabeth Mitchell (also active as Children music artist) and Dan Littleton (that is also Mitchell Husband (Ohh My Gosh another Indie folk band driven by a married Couple. luckily Ida don't seem to be a Christan music band (cause that will be a clichè in the clichè. I Think that is quite more easy find a Black Bear visting his cousins at Noth Pole that a not married christian male female indie folk band, particurally duo). Other Ida Members are bassist vocalist Karla Schickele
and violist Jean Cook & Ruth Keatin. another musician that have played with Ida is Julia Kent, active as solo artist and as members of first inception of Antony and the Johnsons, and Meloria Graeger Rasputina that played Cello on their first Album. Ida play a changing blend of indie folk, pop, dream pop that have the characteristiscs ( for me) to be sure worth to be listen. Ida music is an intense or visceral but sure in not a sort of background music you listen without point your attention on.

It's been said by tourists for hundreds of years that Heaven is Paris...inhabited by Greeks and you're certainly the living embodiment of that tradition. Noted your condescending apology. Perhaps you could tell us the date of the post where you apologized for Hollande.

Even though you blog the music of the American South you don't seem to be aware of our reality. I can assure you all those folks and their relatives and descendents are quite happy that Trump won. Why aren't you happy for us? Surely not even a Parisian soapdodge and part-time blogger would deign to think he knows what's best for people living thousands of miles away with whom he has nothing in common in a culture he knows little about...but you never know.

The one I was after is a version of the Bo Diddley? tune with the “C.a.d.i.l.l.a.c.” chorus - not the Downliners Sect cut. I’ll remember it one day.

Regards and best wishes for 2017. Keep sharin’ fab music.

I just discover your message!
NO condescendance in my words. I just refered about what Trump tell about Paris/France and people of Bataclan ("if they had guns they didn't die").Nothing to do with US election, I never had the suffisance for judging what american People think or vote! At the difference of Mr Trump with France, I have a good idea what is life in the south or in the US. I read american writers like James Lee Burke an others, read US newspapers . I have NOT a stupid vision of a country full of rednecks or WASP, or such caricatures. About 10 days before the vote, I said to everybody here that Trump will win, so you're totally wrong. But your vision of Europe and France...Ou la la! Shut of Fox TV and try looking by yourself. Dont worry for Hollande, I was waiting for nothing with him. Smile a little. If american and french people can't speak, what about other countrys?
