THE DEL MOROCCOS "Blue Black Hair" 2008

This incredible eclectic mix of '50s style r&b, rockabilly, girls group sound, jump blues, swing, Latin beat, etc. is a unique amalgam of styles and sounds that you won't hear from any other American band. Put Bill Haley, Big Joe Turner, Big Maybelle, Ronnie Dawson, and The Crystals into a blender, mix 'em up good, and you will have the Del Moroccos. This is just plain fun music that will have you dancing in your living room. The Del Moroccos are a powerful new 8 piece rock 'n' roll band (guitar, bass, drums, piano, saxes, and 3 sexy frontwomen) who put out an awesome full-length show of dirty R'N'R, R&B material with girl group vocals. Knock the Ray-ettes and Link Wray together, with a blast of garage, a hit of late '50s black rock 'n' roll, dress 'em up like Johnny Cash, and you get a raucous, mean mix of '50s garage. The members are veteran Chicago musicians from the rockabilly, surf, ska, jazz and R & B scenes, from bands including: Mighty Blue Kings, Jimmy Sutton's Four Charms, Deals Gone Bad, Cave Catt Sammy, The Stranger, Kevin O'Donnell's Quality 6, Reluctant Aquanauts and The Stacks. The Del Moroccos lead guitar player Jimmy Sutton, hand picked the line up for this relentless new sound. The Del Moroccos set list features choice selections of obscure, rockin' early independent record label songs and wild originals, capturing a sound that teeters somewhere between the 50's and 60's, and is performed with the emotion of early punk and mod revival. New on the scene, the Del Moroccos have shared the stage with SUN rocording artist Hayden Thompson, and the Queen of rockabilly, the legendary Wanda Jackson. (Black Cat Rockabilly)The Del Moroccos:
Gabrielle Sutton - Lead Vocals / Sarah Goldstien - Backing Vocals, Shakes / Adrienne Stoner - Backing Vocals, Shakes / Jimmy Sutton - Electrified Guitar / Beau Sample - Electrified Bass / Alex Hall - Drums / Aaron Hammes - Piano, Acoustic Guitar / Josh Bell - Saxophones

Prof. sez:

Here's another rarity in the series "essential but not available on cd".

As you know, these 7 tracks were originally released on flexi discs to all members of the British fan club. When the band broke up in 1970, it was decided between the band's ever loyal fan club secretary Freda Kelly, George Harrison and Paul McCartney that the fan club was to be dissolved, as well. A final present to the club members was conceived: an album that put all seven Christmas messages together. In Britain the LP was called "From Then To You”, which first came out on the Lytone label, and then later on Apple. In the USA, the LP was simply called "Christmas Album", and came out on Capitol/Apple. Reportedly, the release of the USA pressing was much delayed; copies were delivered two or three months after Christmas to unsuspecting fan club members.

Both the UK and USA versions are said to have been sourced from Freda Kelly's copies of the original flexi discs. To my ears, 1964, 1965, 1969 and possibly 1968 may have been tape sourced, as they don't have the crackling that's quite apparent on the other tracks, and which one would expect from such an inferior medium. However, the sound quality is about equal for all tracks, and none of these have the same fidelity as the regular EMI recordings.

Because the original release was limited and not for commercial purposes, demand for this LP quickly exceeded supply, and soon enough, counterfeit versions of both the UK and USA releases appeared in the early ‘70s. Later on during that same decade, a counterfeit version of the USA album that faithfully copied the original sleeve and record labels flooded the market. To this day, these are often mistaken for the real deal, and in my estimation, outnumber genuine pressings on a scale of 10 to 1.

This recording was sourced from a mint original 1970 fan club copy with authentic Sam Feldman/Bell Sound signature. The vinyl quality is good for this era, and most of the surface noise actually comes from the recordings itself. I have managed to clean up the crackling as thoroughly as possible, without harming the sound. This might well be the best digital version so far, at least compared to all the sources I have heard.

As for the content itself, 1966 to 1968 are probably the most interesting ones. Then again, the whole series gives an interesting glimpse into Beatleworld over the course of seven years. I think it's an essential listen for the above-average fan (and let's face it, most of us are).

Enjoy and Happy Holidays!

Info:
Mod, Beat, Soul

This 25-song CD is much more than just an excursion into the farther reaches of English Decca Records' vaults -- it's also a de facto tour of the playlists of some of England's hottest mod clubs of the mid-/late '60s; hardly a sound on this collection ever made it anywhere near a chart listing, anywhere in the U.K. (much less the U.S.A.), but a lot of what is here did get picked up locally in London among the mods that made up the audiences of most of these bands. Considering how badly England's Decca Records fared in the middle-late 1960's (apart from the Rolling Stones, the Small Faces, and the Moody Blues) in signing really solid acts, this is an astonishingly good collection of soul-influenced, mod-oriented singles from the company's vaults. A few of the acts included, such as the Small Faces, Tom Jones, St. Louis Union, Chris Farlowe, and the Amen Corner, made some kind of splash on the charts, but most of the musicians here got their chance on these single sides, failed to find success, and disappeared into the mist of musical history. The CD jumps headfirst into the kind of hard-rocking, intense soul numbers that were played to death in London' mod clubs, even if they never scraped even the lower reaches of the charts. The sound on these singles tells you right away why most of these groups were never going to make it as world-class recording acts, being too raw and direct -- without the distinctive hooks to get more than a listen from any radio deejays. By themselves, the Ronnie Jones track, coupled with those by Tom Jones, Steve Aldo, Graham Gouldman, Poets, the Eyes of Blue, and the Quik, justify the cost of this $20 import. The sound is excellent throughout, and it's also reassuring on some level to learn from the notes that Decca is digging so deeply into its vaults that these acts are nearly as obscure to the people producing this compilation as they are to us. Hello,

ACHTUNG SPITFIRE SCHNELL SCHNELL

Garage Rock'n Roll’n Soul Band from Mannheim, Germany

... Hits That Will Make You Dance, Scream And Holler!
Since starting over 17 years ago with a mix of Sixties Garage and Surf, they have been crafting their own style by putting Punk-Edge and a large dose of Sixties-Soul into the Garage Beat, making a positively explosive yet fiercely danceable mix - now for the first time held down to long-playing vinyl.
Recording and releasing this record remained a 100% DIY effort, we put all our hearts into. The record is limited and numbered to an edition of 300 and includes additional gimmicks like a comic book by amazing illustrator Martin Burkhardt, digital downloads (+1 Bonus Track), full linernotes & lyrics other cool stuff, making it a truely collectible piece of art – Ultimately this is a record that we would buy ourselves, pull out of the box from time to time, sit down, have a drink and give it a spin!

"Achtung Spitfire Schnell Schnell - What´s up with ... 7" EP (Decent Records)

FAZ WALTZ
For fans seeking the freshness of a 1970s glam revival.
It’s music that mixes the gritty aspects of glam rock while injecting itself with the high energy of power pop. Their style contains certain elements that nod toward the simplicity and infectiously poppy nature found with Gary Glitter, but with an overwhelming electrified rocking sensation longing for Jook or Hammersmith Gorillas.

Hello,

THE DEFECTORS - BABY GIMME LOVE (E.S.P. Recordings 2001) FLAC or @320

Tip!
Joachim Hiller (http://www.ox-fanzine.de/web/rev/28254/reviews.207.html)

The second album from The Defectors, Baby Gimme Love is a thunderous garage rock record that picks up from where the first left off. An album with a real high tempo, it is furious in it’s pursuit of the true garage rock sound. The retro stylings that are present throughout add a real character to this record, and move it from garage rock wannabe to a real high quality record. A true garage rock great.
