Elvis Costello - Out Of Our Idiot 1982-1987 Rare & Unreleased (1987)

Following in the tradition of Taking Liberties and Ten Bloody Marys & Ten How's Your Fathers, Out of Our Idiot compiles 21 rarities Elvis Costello released during the early and mid-'80s, usually under pseudonyms. Many of these songs are collaborations -- "Seven Day Weekend" is a rollicking duet with Jimmy Cliff; Elvis sings "Baby It's You" with Nick Lowe; Costello and T-Bone Burnett form the Coward Brothers -- hence the album's billing as a "various-artists" record, which is indicative of its freewheeling, goofy humor. Even with a cover of Richard Thompson's harrowing "Withered and Died," Out of Our Idiot is pure fun, and it's not just for collectors. Costello's throwaways are frequently excellent, whether it's covers (Yoko Ono's "Walking on Thin Ice," Smokey Robinson's "From Head to Toe," "So Young"), genre exercises, jokes, or full-fledged songs. Most of the songs on Out of Our Idiot were later included as bonus tracks in the Demon/Rykodisc reissue series, but this remains the only place "Little Goody Two Shoes" (a working version of "Inch by Inch") is available. Besides, it's a great listen in its own right. (Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Allmusic)

Outtakes? These are the songs that didn't make it to the official releases. Even Elvis's outtakes are better than most bands best efforts. 'Turning The Town Red' is a radio classic (that has never been played on the radio). 'Black Sails In The Sunset' is a beautiful pop song. 'The Flirting Kind', 'Heathen Town', etc. As a songwriter myself, I could only hope that my work measures up to Elvis's outtakes. Elvis is a master songwriter who has written so many great tunes that he can allow some of them to never see the light of day. I'm going to go through his trash cans and a probably find enough material to launch my own career. Thanks Elvis. (Record Runner)

Sun Ra - Singles; The Definitive 45s Collection 1952-1991 (2016)

The set contains much of Ra's more accessible work, making it an excellent (and very generous) introduction for newcomers, but there's also plenty of material that might've escaped notice from longtime fans.

In addition to hundreds of studio albums, live recordings, and compilations, the Sun Ra discography also contains dozens of singles, many of them dating from the early days of the artist's career, before he really took off for the outer cosmos. His singles have been collected before, particularly on the 1996 double CD The Singles, issued by Evidence Records. Strut's 2016 collection contains three discs' worth of material, but it isn't just a reissue of the previous set with a bonus disc tacked on. This one includes recordings that were unearthed since the '90s, including plenty of spoken word pieces. (Norton Records has released several LPs and singles of Ra's "Space Poetry" since the 2000s.) Not everything from the previous set is included -- the older one had a few more alternate versions as well as songs recorded with singer Juanita Rogers and bluesman Lacy Gibson (Ra's brother-in-law) that are missing here. Everything that is included, however, is completely essential. (Allmusic)

The immense output of Sun Ra and his many backing bands, coupled with the limited production of many of his releases has long defied dedicated collectors. Parallel to a vast list of LP releases, Sun Ra released numerous 45 RPM singles; one-off meteorites from his prolific cosmic journey. Working closely with Sun Ra LLC and Art Yard Records, it is with great pride that Strut presents a definitive collection of the rare singles released by Sun Ra across his illustrious career, spanning 1952 to 1991.
Released prolifically during the 1950s and more sporadically thereafter, primarily on the Saturn label, the 45s trace the development of Sun Ra’s forward-thinking “Space-Bop” and his unique take on jazz and blues traditions which remains unlike anything else from the period. As with his LPs, most 45s were only pressed in small runs and have since become extremely rare and sought after. Some have only been discovered in physical form in recent years; some were planned and penciled but allegedly never made it to vinyl and some appeared as one-off magazine singles and posthumous releases. Johnny Adams - Man Of My Word (1998)

udging by this, his last recording, Johnny Adams had a lot of music left in him when he died at age 67. As with all of his remarkably consistent Rounder efforts, Man of My Word is marked by conscientious song selection, expert backing, and, foremost, Adams's absolutely commanding vocals. With producer Scott Billington back at the helm, and backed by a crack session crew led by fellow New Orleans stalwart Walter "Wolfman" Washington, Adams tackles this selection of soul tunes with characteristic verve and savvy; the man simply didn't have it in him to sing a note carelessly. Highlights here include Dan Penn and Spooner Oldham's Memphis-styled "It Tears Me Up," Bobby Charles's easy-grooving "I Don't Want to Know," and the gospel closer, "Never Alone." But it's all good. It really is. --Steven Stolder

Adams kept cranking out solo albums for the Rounder imprint and this one was the ninth such effort, finding him in tip-top shape vocally and in full command of his consummate powers. In addition to top-notch new material from Dan Penn ("It Ain't the Same Thing"), Carson Whitsett ("Bulldog Break His Chain"), Bobby Charles ("I Don't Want to Know") and Jonnie Barnett ("Going Out of My Mind Sale"), Adams takes on William Bell's "You Don't Miss Your Water," Brook Benton's "Looking Back" and Percy Sledge's "It Tears Me Up." Closing out the album is a duet with Aaron Neville on the gospel chestnut "Never Alone." (Cub Koda, Allmusic)

Furry Lewis - In His Prime (1927-1928) Yazoo L-1050

Even before his rediscovery in 1959, Furry Lewis's lofty place in Memphis blues history had been secured on the strength of a mere 23 songs recorded between 1927 and 1930. Lewis's innovative guitar work and his pained vocals take center stage on these 14 recordings. Lewis shows terrific versatility on these sides: His incredible fingerpicking uses dramatic bass tones on "Jellyroll" and rolls banjo-style on "Mistreatin' Mamma." His high-pitched slide wails through "Why Don't You Come Home." Lyrically, he was capable of both great wit and dark imagery ("I believe I'll buy me a graveyard of my own/I'm gonna kill everybody that ever done wrong."). The Lewis staple "Kassie Jones (Parts 1 and 2)" is here, although his other classic, "John Henry," isn't. --Marc Greilsamer

Furry Lewis was never better than he was on these early recordings. Lewis's Memphis sound was very different from the more familiar Delta sound of Robert Johnson and his followers, and his magnificent singing, guitar-playing, and songwriting will come as a revelation to blues fans who have somehow overlooked this blues giant. The sound-quality of these recordings far exceeds what might reasonably be expected of music recorded so long ago. Highly recommended! (Blues World)

The Omens - Destroy The ESP (2005)

In the line of Fuzztones; Cynics; Morlocks (80s); Fiends.

Packing a surprising amount of punch into a twenty two-minute body, Destroy the ESP is a jaunty, discordant, primal trip through a range of sounds and effects. Exuding a real fuzzy, post-punk feel with rock'n'roll sensibilities and cascading rhythms and grooves, all cylinders are constantly firing, and constantly propelling the band through their songs with as much talent as swagger. This is a band that will make your speakers pulsate, and will make your foot involuntarily tap.

I can't for the life of me put my finger directly on what makes this record so damn enjoyable. The rhythms, while loud and distorted, maintain an undeniable catchiness that will keep you lost in the groove. The volume on the band's amplifiers might not always be to eleven, but the energy is always peaking. "Hey Moody" shows the band at their frenetic best, with a real driving guitar line and some damn fine work on the drums to carry the groove and the song itself to the next level. Each song is able to follow up very well on the one before it, and the result is an album that flows just as well as it rocks. The rollicking grooves and air-tight rhythms could not compliment the vocals better, which range from a voice full of attitude in the singing parts to the occasional instance where the singer lets loose like a wildcat and pushes a gritty scream out of his vocal cords.

There's just no solid way to knock the band, as they have a solid grip on every possible element of their songwriting process. Their garage rock stylings coupled with an undeniable rock'n'roll groove offer more than a fair share of moments to remember. While the angular guitar work during the verses is nothing breathtaking, some of the moments that the guitarist is allowed to truly let loose on are great. Busting right out of the gate with "I Lost My Mind," the Omens waste no time in fusing together their two styles into a tight and interesting package.

While the garage rock with rock'n'roll influence tag is more than likely to incorrectly conjure assumptions about the White Stripes, this band has far more to offer than that overrated duo could muster. This is definitely a band to keep your eyes out for; give this a try. (Punk News)
