Johnny & The Hurricanes "The Definitive Collection" 1959-1965

Johnny & the Hurricanes were typical of the many landlocked instrumental R&B combos who were swept up in the surf craze of the early '60s. Based in Toledo, OH, and led by saxophonist Johnny Paris, the Hurricanes had virtually nothing in common with the reverb-drenched California surf sound, favoring instead a sort of raw, ragged frat-house R&B that was somewhat reminiscent of Junior Walker. This two-disc collection has everything you need, starting with the group's first hit, 1959's scorching "Crossfire," and two unlikely covers of an old folk tune, "Red River Valley" (done by the Hurricanes as "Red River Rock") and the minstrel song "Blue Tail Fly" (done as "Beatnik Fly"). A lot of the selections here draw on the same bag of tricks, but everything is so well executed that it hardly matters. This is indeed the definitive collection of this interesting combo. Thanks. One of my favorite instrumental bands, and one of my best concert memories.

Every Saturday (11pm) and Sunday (4pm) in the 60's "Sand Storm" was the intro and outro for the Top Twenty Show on BFBS in Germany (Britisch Forces Broadcasting Service), the soundtrack of my youth. I remember siiting in my father's VW listenig to the Top Twenty while my parents were visiting friends for tea...

"Buckeye" by Johnny And The Hurricanes was also dj Johnny Walker's theme on Radio Caroline.

montysmusic,
Paderborn. Iserlohn and Willich were in reach of BFBS like the city of Essen in the Ruhrgebeat where I live since my birth. In the sixties every year in the summer I went to the north Netherlands beaches. This was the paradise for off-shore radio stations like Caroline, London (Big L), Northsea, Veronica, Sutch etc

Psyclist, thanks for the 11th Dreamday. Did you post this randomly, or did you see the comment in the other page? Either way, Thanks again.

Thanks for Johnny & The Hurricanes. Great music from the past.

There will never be a better era again for radio than the sixties offshore radio stations. Pirates, as we said then. Caroline, London, Scotland, 270, 390, Essex, King, Invecta, Atlanta, City, Veronica, Uilenspiegel, REM, Syd, Nord, Mercur, Britain, England, 227, 355, Dolfijn, and later Atlantis, Mi Amigo, RNI, Laser, Capital...did I forget some?

Hey RYP,
great Memories we are sharing. Happened that I also listened to the Top 20 and to Radio Caroline and London in my Father's VW near the Ruhrgebeat Area. Later in the Sixties my Favourite Radioshow was "The Saturday Show" also broadcasted on BFBS every Saturday of course from 10 am to 12 am. Nowadays I listen to radiosunrise.de, which also was a Pirate Station in the Sebties. Those Memories....

Thanks for the Johnny and the Hurricanes gents. Their version of the Theme from Dr. No is soooo good. What's hilarious are the comments on YT by old guys from Ohio who just discovered the existence of the Live At The Star Club LP and feel deeply betrayed by the vocals. They should have a big plate of jambalaya and get over it...

pimokeitis,
yes I forgot to mention "The Saturday Show" with the dj Brian Matthews I think. This was the other event of the week where all the popular musicians appeared with their top hits live played at the BBC.
And there was another week highlight in '68 - '70: "SuperClean DreamMachine" with Ad Visser on Hilversum 3. A great psychedelic program with music from The Byrds, Crome Syrcus, Earth Opera, Timothy Leary, Jimi Hendrix Experience, Country Joe & The Fish, John Mayall, The Fugs, Beach Boys, Captain Beefheart, The Association, Yardbirds, The Doors, The Small Faces, The Velvet Underground, Pink Floyd, Fairport Convention, The Crazy World of Arthur Brown, Jefferson Airplane etc.
In 1968 for the first time I heard there Dr. John's "Gris-Gris"... that changed my life because that must have come from another star!

You'll find some taped original programs at:

On second thought, I did forget to mention several pirate stations from the 60s...Seagull, Delmare, VRON, BBMS.

@ montysmusic and RYP - I was in Pirmasens and Massweiler Germany in that same time, specifically 1971-1972, and absolutely loved Radio Caroline when I could get it. BFBS almost never happened, unless I was on the road.
