Dreams So Real "Rough Night In Jericho" 1988

By far, this cd captures a defining moment in my life as a then-freshman at the University of Georgia. My two best friends made their first roadtrip from Augusta to come see me while they were still in high school. It had to be November, 1988. We thought it was so cool to get into a bar at 18 years old and we were all such huge music fans, it was recommended that we go to the Uptown Lounge to see Dreams So Real. The music sounded so good live and the Uptown is an Athens legend, I remember thinking, "I am 18, in college, good tunes...I am the king of the world." RNIJ as an album is absolutely STELLAR! My personal favorite is "Victim." I went on to work at the Camelot Music store at the Georgia Square Mall in Athens, and when "Gloryline" was released they did an in-store appearance. I have pictures with them and my cds are signed by the band. GREAT, GREAT, TIMES! I am so proud to have been there. I must've seen DSR 50 times (minimum). Does anyone remember "Holly Faith?" - By Michael P. Harley "Harley4477" (Evans, GA United States)I first heard of these guys in college in 1988, when I went to go see The Church in concert and a band I had never heard of called Dreams So Real were opening. They pretty much just played this album in a different order (as another reviewer remarked) and I was blown away. The next day, I went to the local record store and bought the album. I was blown away again, and about 15 years later, this album still gets consistent play. REM comparisons aren't totally out of order (DSR were from Athens, also) but these guys incorporate more straight-ahead rock into their sound. Standout tracks are...um...all 10. Seriously, the album hangs together spectacularly. From the hard rocking opener "Rough Night In Jericho", to the gospel tinged "Bearing Witness", to the great closer "Love Fall Down", this has been one of my all time faves since my first listen. I have a huge music collection, and there just aren't many records I can say that about. Follow the advice of everyone who has reviewed this unknown (a travesty indeed) classic and hunt down a copy of this great rock record. - By Nathaniel Slautich "bobaphat"

Review by
by Ed Whitelock, 1st August 2016

It may sound strange to say that this anthology of music recorded between 1968 and 1972 took me back to the 1990s, but Grapefruit Records’ David Wells has compiled the kind of collection that was once so common during what we might call “the golden age of the CD box set” that occurred during that final decade of the millennium, just before the download revolution. Sets like Rhino’s expanded Nuggets anthologies opened up a world of unknown sounds and performers to curious music fans. Oftentimes, too, the expansive liner notes in the accompanying booklets were as valuable as the songs themselves in guiding listeners to new discoveries.

The three-CD I’m a Freak Baby: A Journey Through the British Heavy Psych and Hard Rock Underground Scene: 1968-72 is just such an anthology that introduces listeners to an important and too-often overlooked transition period in UK rock. The songs and performers here bridge the period between the congruent movements of the British folk revival and psychedelic scene and what would develop into the first wave of British heavy metal along with the progressive movement. There are even early echoes of what would become punk (or stirrings of why the punk movement became necessary) to be found here.

As Wells clarifies in his excellent liner notes, the bands represented here, unlike those of the folk revival and early psychedelic scenes, were comprised mostly of working class kids who were seeking sounds that supplied “a visceral rather than a cerebral impact”, which is not to say that this music is any less intelligent. Though, of course, many critics were slow to acknowledge the emotional and intellectual nuances of these guttural musings, which might be gathered under the general banner of stoner rock. Wells paints a picture of a “teenage wasteland” for working class British youth and amplifies the importance that this music played for its artists and listeners.

Hallo RYP,

THE DADDS - French Kiss + Idées Choc & Propos Chic

Superb debut release by this bunch of french beatniks who sing in their native language. Here you get 7 tracks of wylde garage-punk, enriched with a shot of rhythm’n’blues and a touch of pure sixties pop, incl. a fab cover of the SPADES classic ‘You gonna miss me’ (of course,
sung in french!!!). Drenched in swirlin’ organ grooves, wailin’ harmonica sounds and merciless fuzz attacks, the DADDS sound like a mixture of the KINKS, Jaques Dutronc, the CREATION, Ronnie BIRD and the SEEDS. French charm and a very danceable 60’s beat are unbeatable weapons to make your next cocktail party a huge success and believe us, these guys got plenty of both!
(Soundflat Newsletter_08_08_07)

The Dadds überzeugen auf ihrer 7-Song-EP "French Kiss" (Beyond Your Mind/Cargo) durch beschwingten Drive, charmant angerotzten Gesang und eine herrlich trashige Orgel. "Je Vais Te Manquer" ist eine gelungene Verbeugung vor den 13th Floor Elevators, das Instrumental "The Clouds Have Groovy Faces" erinnert dezent an Gun Club und "Johnny Thunders Is My Broom" könnte auch von den Standells oder den Seeds in einem selten fröhlichen Moment stammen. "I Am Dorian Gray" hört man hingegen an, dass The Dadds auch aktuellere Bands wie The Libertines zu ihren Einflüssen zählen. Très bien.

After several years of underground activism, THE DADDS released their second album on GROOVIE RECORDS (LP) (April 2009) and GREEN COOKIE (CD). Formed in 2002 in western France, the band is playing one of the most groovy and stylish garage rock. Influenced by the best of French psychedelic pop and the mod/freakbeat sound of Carnaby street, our five young beatnicks take up the energy, spirit and ingenousness of primeval rock n’ roll again. Let’s mention that THE DADDS sing in French and that their lyrics are seen as funny and literary...

Formed in 2002, The Dadds is a wildly 60’s garage band in which voluptuously melt the groove of British R’n’B’. The Dadds are able to combine English rock’n’roll with French pop music, everything kept at a rather retro level.
The English rock elements show some parallels to The Buzzcocks, The Kinks, the Beatles and The Who, the French pop and rock side hints Les Problemes or Ronnie bird. This mixture of French and English influences is reflected in the vocals, too. There are eight songs in The Dadds’ native language and two songs in english.

THE SPACE CAKES

60s influenced rockin’ Neo-Psychedelic Garage from Mestre, Italy with Fuzz, Farfisa & More

The band was born in 1991 as a garage-punk quartet. The first release, the self-produced EP Out of My Mind (1993), proved to be well accepted by all the garage fans.
The Space Cakes soon gained a place among Italy's favorite garage bands. 1995 saw the release of the LP "Taste the Flavour Of" (1995, Helter Skelter). Important underground magazines wrote enthusiastic reviews about this record, while the San Francisco based radio KFJC broadcasted it extensively, so that it became No. 6 in the November 1995 playlist. The same year a contribution to the compilation "Tales from the Boot" featured an energetic live version of the classic "She's the One".
The success of "Taste..." opened new doors, and in 1996 Detour Records, leader among garage mod labels, released The Sailing Ship (1996, Detour Records DR 045), as one of the first singles by a non-british band. Again, excellent reviews expressed general approval for a sound which was slightly changing towards more sophisticated harmonies. Their fame was increased by Fritz Radio, Berlin, which broadcasted the record along the winter of 1996/97.
In 1997, the band was asked by Detour to take part in two tribute-compilations composed of songs respectively written by Oasis & The Beatles. The band faced the challenge, and turned "Some Might Say" into a psycho-garage number, while respectfully rendered an organ mod version of "Love Me Do". The CDs were released 1997+1998 from Tribute Records.
And finally, the brand new CD In A Forbidden Place is being released during autumn 1998 …being at one time classical and innovative. The Hammond organ perfectly blends with the Vox guitar, while the bass and drums spiral through complex though uptempo rhythms. A series of instrumental songs opens new roads to follow.

Record-Reviews:

"... this beautiful album is certainly not inferior than those of bands, as for instance Menswear, that take the covers of english magazines. ... Go buy it!"
- Claudio Sorge (RUMORE - no. 42-43)

"... an album that makes you like it for its primitive spirit..."
- Elio Bussolino (ROCKERILLA - no. 181)

"... They have written some absolutely stark and perfect
fuzz & Farfisa gems ... This album blew me away ... "
- Phil Dirt (KFJC Radio, September '95)

"... Perfectly fitting into the last Detour production, this single ... shows all the class of the quintet from Mestre, in the framework of a garage speckled with pop tinges, with an unchained Matteo Bevilacqua at the organ ... Slight shivers and good vibrations, that are impossible to resist."
- John Vignola (ROCKERILLA - n.195)

"The excellent 7" ... forges pop inlaid gems.
Electrical shocks and good sense of rhythm
for one of this year home singles."
- Jacopo Barozzi (MUCCHIO SELVAGGIO - n.242)

"... A good production, two excellent tracks ..."
- Luca Frazzi (RUMORE - n.57)
