"Constant Sorrow" 1925-1950’s - Bluegrass From Root To Flower

Bluegrass collection does exactly what it says on the tin... adding a variety that's often missing from bluegrass collections. - RECORD COLLECTOR
"This three- disc set provides rich pickings for fans of what the sleeve affectionately calls Old Time Music" - UNCUTCharmingly known as “Old Time Music” or just “Old Timey”, the hillbilly precursor of bluegrass did indeed have a long history stretching back across the Atlantic to the pre-record folk music of Britain and Victorian parlour songs. As a direct result of the enormous growth of the recording industry in America in the 1920s and 1930s, many rural markets were exploited by the early phonograph companies. It was out of this music that bluegrass evolved.
Brother acts were immensely important among the roots of bluegrass. Living, playing and singing together day after day produced recordings that feature the most intricate musical interplay and vocal harmonies ever heard. A notable brother act was The Monroes. Charlie and Bill would ultimately form their own groups, with Bill being acknowledged as the father of bluegrass for his recordings with The Blue Grass Boys.
The Stanley Brothers (Ralph and Carter) formed their Clinch Mountain Boys in 1946 in emulation of Monroe’s new Blue Grass Boys. The brothers’ legacy has been acknowledged by Emmylou Harris, and Ralph continues to inspire at the age of 83, reaching a whole new audience through his involvement with the O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack.
Other notable contributors to Constant Sorrow include Uncle Dave Macon, Mainer’s Mountaineers, The Delmore Brothers, The Carlisle Brothers, Roy Hall’s Blue Ridge Entertainers, Jimmie Skinner, The Lonesome Pine Fiddlers, Jim Eanes & The Shenandoah Valley Boys, Mac Wiseman, The McCormick Brothers, Joe Maphis and Jimmy Martin. Classic bluegrass numbers include “I’m A Man Of Constant Sorrow”, “Footprints In The Snow”, “Orange Blossom Special”, “I’ll Fly Away”, “Angel Band” and “Feudin’ Banjos”.

I thought I had 'em all. Clearly, I did not. Thank you, Gyro, for the marvelous Constant Sorrow comp!

I'm trying to keep myself out of the fray and a little mellow but I just gotta say that the "Constant Sorrow" box is some of the best country I've heard in quite awhile. I don't know if its really all bluegrass but that's what I'm calling it because that's what Gyro says it is. And the "Bump Jump Jive" series is A-1++ as well.
Thanks, Gyro.

Larry Ehrlich was at end of a long day in a studio in Bristol, VA. Carter and Ralph Stanley as well as Ralph Mayo and Curley Lambert entered the studio in front of one microphone, and Ehrlich, after seeing them play hog callings, a couple of radio shows, and a barn dance, asked the band to sing some of the traditional songs they had been recording for the past 16 years. The results, completely unearthed until now, are no less than stunning. This is the Stanleys as listeners have never heard them: laid-back, relaxed, and full of recollection and goodwill, singing and playing songs as familiar to them as their upbringing. These are country and bluegrass songs to be sure, but also some of the old folk ballads that had come out of the Southern mountains along with some Anglo and Celtic ballads from the days of yore. A number of these tracks represent the only available live versions of songs from their repertoire, and a few more are almost impossible to come by in any other way. At least one cut, 'Drifiting Too Far from the Shore,' was closely associated with Bill Monroe, and a pair are co-written originals, the harrowing murder ballad 'The Tale of the Lawson Family' (once or twice covered by the Louvin Brothers) and the beautiful mountain love song 'Meet Me Tonight.' Ralph wrote a good many others here, or at the very least created original adaptations: 'Come All You Tenderhearted,' 'East Virginia Blues,' and 'Bound to Ride' among them. But it is on the old songs that the Stanleys shine the brightest: 'Poor Ellen Smith,' 'Dream of a Miner's Child,' and their 'John Henry' are deeply affecting. The fidelity is good throughout, but the feeling of the mix is what grabs the listener and won't let go. This is a welcome and necessary addition to the Stanley Brothers catalog.

The Stanley Brothers - A Long Time Ago, Live 1956 (Columbia Legacy)

1. Handsome Molly
2. East Virginia Blues
3. The Story Of The Lawson Family
4. Dream Of A Miners Child
5. Come All You Tenderhearted
6. Poor Ellen Smith
7. Darling Do You Know Who Loves You
8. Shout Little Lulie
9. Bound To Ride
10. Meet Me Tonight
11. My Long Skinny Lanky Sarah Jane
12. Little Bessie
13. Train 45
14. John Henry
15. Little Birdie
16. Drifting Too Far From The Shore
17. Orange Blossum Special
18. Nine Pound Hammer
19. Feast Here Tonight
20. Tragic Love

West Side's "Ridin' That Midnight Train: Starday-King Recordings 1958-1961" whittles down these legendary Stanley Brothers recordings into a manageable portion of bluegrass home fries (King's 109-track Early Starday-King Years 1958-1961 is not for the Stanley novice). Though the scene had changed much since the Stanley Brothers' '40s and early-'50s heydays, they managed to lay down some of the best work of their careers during this period, making this an excellent choice for longtime fans or those looking to build a respectable bluegrass collection.

The Stanley Brothers - Ridin' That Midnight Train, Starday-King Recordings 1958-1961 (West Side)

1 - Holiday Pickin' [A.K.A. Wild Horse]
2 - That Happy Night
3 - Love Me Darling Just Tonight
4 - She's More to Be Pitied
5 - How Mountain Girls Can Love
6 - The Memory of Your Smile
7 - Train 45
8 - Trust Each Other
9 - Ridin' That Midnight Train
10 - Shackles and Chains
11 - Man of Constant Sorrow
12 - How Far to Little Rock
13 - My Main Trial Is Yet to Come
14 - If I Lose
15 - Rank Strangers
16 - Let the Church Roll On
17 - Daybreak in Dixie
18 - Let Me Love You One More Time
19 - Finger Poppin' Time
20 - The Wild Side of Life
21 - The Drunken Driver
22 - Steel Guitar Rag
23 - You're Still to Blame
24 - Hey, Hey, Hey

Johnny
The music in the middle of disc 1 was called "country" or "mountain music" in the 1930s, and is now known as "oldtime". The rest of the songs and tunes are Bluegrass.
