Santa's Funk & Soul Christmas Party Vol. 1 - 3

R+B Christmas obscurities of a very high quality.
A great selection of rare funk jewels with a christmas background. The guy who compiled it seems to have a big knowledge of oldschool Funk & Soul and arranged these tracks in a great way.

The project started in 2010 when Jan illustrated the diversity of more than 50 Christmas tunes in the field of Jazz, Funk and Soul to Tobias Kirmayer of Tramp Records, Germany. Although some of the titles had already been compiled, there were exceptional songs that grabbed their attention. Major record companies owned a handful of the initially pre-selected songs. Despite the fact that these terrific songs never topped the charts the quality of this compilation easily shakes hands with famous Christmas records of major artists like James Brown or Lou Rawls. Ladies and gentlemen, sing along, shake your hips and dance because: Santa's Funk & Soul Christmas Party is goin' on.

Arthur Conley - Sweet Soul Music (2016)

Atlantic Records had the "southern soul" music market well covered during the sixties with a roster that included legends Wilson Pickett and Otis Redding, along with a host of other soul music stars. Arthur Conley, while definitely in Atlantic's second tier of performers, nevertheless made many worthwhile recordings that have aged well. He was a protégée of Otis Redding, although he sounded more like Sam Cooke. While "Sweet Soul Music" overshadows any of Arthur Conley's other records and is the song for which he is best remembered, there are enough other hard-to-find goodies on this collection to satisfy any lover of "southern soul" music. (The Soul Detective)

01. Sweet Soul Music
02. Funky Street
03. I Got a Feeling
04. You Really Know How to Hurt a Guy
05. Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da
06. Shake, Rattle & Roll
07. Burning Fire
08. One Night Is All I Need
09. A Change Is Gonna Come
10. Hearsay
11. I'm Gonna Forget About You
12. I've Been Loving You Too Long (To Stop New)
13. This Love of Mine
14. Put Our Love Together
15. Otis Sleep on
16. Baby What You Want Me to Do
17. Hand In Glove
18. Ha! Ha! Ha!
19. Run on
20. I'll Take the Blame
21. Is That You Love
22. I Can't Stop (No, No, No)
23. Love Got Me
24. Keep on Talking
25. People Sure Act Funny
26. Love Comes and Goes
27. Shing-A-Ling
28. Wholesale Love
29. Stuff You Gotta Watch

Eddie Hinton - Bandcestors 1965-1971

Southern Blues-Rock; Blue-Eyed, Backwoods Soul; Rhythm & Blues; Swamp Music; and Country-Fried Rock. This is a fine comp of (mostly) early Eddie Hinton sides. This must be what toured the Alabama fraternity circuit - solid covers of r&b hits and misses.

For a while, Tuscaloosa was home to two of the greatest blue-eyed soul musicians the South ever produced.
Eddie Hinton was a fine guitarist and songwriter but he made his mark as a vocalist. Author Peter Guralnick described Hinton as "the last of the great white soul singers."
Tippy Armstrong was a brilliant guitarist. He played lead with Muscle Shoals' famed house band, the Swampers, on sessions with people like Albert King, Wilson Pickett and Tony Joe White. People who heard him play in the 1960s with groups like The Rubber Band can testify to the intensity he brought to live performances.
Hinton, fighting a losing battle with personal demons, died in 1995 at age 51. Armstrong, who had demons of his own, died even younger, at age 32.
Though they both played in/slocal '60s bands and both became associated with the recording industry in Muscle Shoals, it seems odd that Armstrong and Hinton never combined to make a commercial recording. It would have been dynamite.
They did, however, record a few demos together in Birmingham in the mid-1970s as part of a group with the working name "Tuscaloosa All-Stars." The release of those recordings, and others that feature Hinton's 1960s singing with a local band named the "5 Men-Its," on a new CD suggests what Southern music lost with their deaths.

1 Eddie Hinton Nice Girl (Vocal Eddie Hinton)
2 Tuscaloosa All-Stars Keep On Goin'
3 Tuscaloosa All-Stars I Could Fall in Love With You
4 Eddie Hinton Just Another Wild Love Affair (Vocal Eddie Hinton)
5 Tuscaloosa All-Stars I Didn't Wanna Lose (Vocal Mike Duke)
6 The 5 Men-its Old Man
7 Tuscaloosa All-Stars Come With Me
8 Tuscaloosa All-Stars Irene, the Soap Opera Queen
9 Eddie Hinton You Made Me Sing, (Vocal Eddie Hinton)
10 The 5 Men-its Blue Feelin (Vocals Eddie Hinton)
11 The 5 Men-its You're Gonna Lose That Girl
12 The 5 Men-its Neighbor, Neighbor (Vocal Eddie Hinton)
13 The 5 Men-its The Night Before (Vocal Eddie Hinton)
14 The 5 Men-its Turn On Your Love Light (Vocal Eddie Hinton)
15 The Bozo Band Bozo Band Medley
16 The 5 Men-its Walkin' With Mr. Lee (Lead Guitar Eddie Hinton)

The Revellions - The Revellions (Dirty Water Records 2008)

Another stunning Garage band to come out of Dublin, The Revellions were originally an instrumental surf band. With a pounding rhythm section, a swirling Farfisa keyboard, a guitar player shooting out riffs like early morning target practice and a psychotic vocalist screaming like a drunken banshee, The Revellions know how to keep it primitive. Very fast, very loud, very cool.

1 Ain't No Fool - 3:11
2 Down On Your Luck - 3:31
3 Up To You - 3:11
4 I Don't Mind - 2:17
5 Groundswell - 1:54
6 Not The Attraction - 3:14
7 Walking Away - 3:07
8 Have It All - 3:29
9 Telling Lies - 3:08

Thank you for drawing the world's attention (for it is indeed the world that drops by this charmed bazaar daily) to these two humble and gifted musicians. They passed too soon, but their musical prowess lives on...

Thanks, Gyro, for the Eddie Hinton. It's definitely white soul. Gravely. Not quite Lonnie Mack, but that's a high standard.
