Blood On The Saddle "Blood On The Saddle" 1984

"Country punkcore! Pretty, pretty cool stuff if you like old country, rockabilly and punk!"These California cow-punks are less concerned with revering C&W icons than trashing them at a furious pace: Blood on the Saddle's idea of country is Hank Williams OD-ing in the back of his car; their western, that of spaghetti flicks. On the quartet's first album, ragged harmonies, yodelled vocals and the slap of stand-up bass lend authenticity, making the record a rodeo where even the horses are doing speed. One of the band's three lead singers, ex-BANGLE Annette Zilinskas, vocalizes on the best songs, including "Do You Want to Dance?" and "(I Wish I Was a) Single Girl (Again)," where she sounds like a real down-home country singer trying to stay straight while her band, out of control, beats her to the finish.Blood On The Saddle:

The Galaxy Trio "Saucers Over Vegas" 1994 + "Cocktails With The Gravity Girl" 1996 - 7"/45rpm

Awesome Dick-Dale influenced sounds that make one run for the shoreline between the jazzy twangs of the formidable bass and the taunting leads. Tasty. I'd throw it more than 5 stars if I could. My tastes include SCI, Dead, MMW, blues and jazz. - amazonEstrus Records presents THE GALAXY TRIO with their smokin' all-instro surf/punk debut, "Suacers Over Vegas." After seeing these Portland, OR. natives deliver the goods live it was obvious that they didn't need no stinkin' big studio wankin' to get it on, these cats peeled paint offa cars in the parking lot! So we threw'em into Egg Studios, gave'em a case of Schmidt and had'em blast thru their shit live, direct to 2-track and the result is the "Saucers Over Vegas" 10"/CD. Eight dark powerful instros hot outta da harem and ready for a brawl, sorta like a warped melding of The Wipers & Dick Dale! So, slap on that turban and keep watchin' the skies, 'cause there are "Saucers Over Vegas" and THE GALAXY TRIO can't be far behind! - Estrustrax:

Anibal Velasquez Y Su Conjunto "Mambo Loco" 1962-1978

Mambo Loco' is a compilation of tracks by Anibal Velasquez, the legendary accordionist from Barranquilla in Colombia. In fact, when not crate-digging in Africa, Analog Africa founder Samy Ben Redjeb can often be found in Colombia. This coupled with the fact that many of the tracks presented here have become essential during Analog Africa DJ sets and have set fire to more than one dance-floor, means this new release has all the hallmarks of becoming another Analog Africa classic. The opener to this set, "Carruseles," begins with some piano that's straight out of Little Richard, before a brief pause, then the band blazes into some serious Latin music. But that's the spirit of Anibal Velasquez and his band -- they attacked what they did in the spirit of rock & roll. It doesn't matter whether it's a cumbia, a guaracha, or whatever, this is simply rock through a different musical prism, and every bit as stirring as Chuck Berry. "Que Paso" and "Santo Amor" both take Colombian sounds to places they'd never been before, and even when Velasquez gets rootsy, as on "Cumbia Bogotana," it's very much on his own terms. The nearest analogy is with the punks who upended rock, or even the very first generation of rockers, who subverted the forms and split everything wide open. This is high-octane music, a sound revelation that's absolutely invigorating and convincing. (Chris Nickson, Allmusic)

The Trilobites "Savage Mood Swing" 1989

In 1988 the Trilobites came to the attention of the fledgling rooArt label. The band contributed "All hail the new right" to rooArt inaugural Yougblood compilation. That led to a full recording contract which resulted in the 12-inch ep & cd ep "I can't wait for the summer to end" (mars 1989). Then englishman Steve James produced the Trilobites' debut studio album, "Savage mood swing" (march 1990). Between recording the album and it's release, the Trilobites also undertook a successful European tour (late 1989). - McFarlane in the "Encyclopedia of Australian rock and pop".The Trilobites were a Sydney-based band in the late 80s and early 90s. They mainly played around Sydney's southern suburbs, often at The Den at Penshurst, Caringbah Inn, and Sylvania Hotel. When Savage Mood Swing was released in 1990 The Trilobites had already released several good solid singles, an EP, plus a live album, and were deservedly enjoying the embryo of indie success with a growing live following amongst punters plus a sprinkling of airplay on Radio Triple J.
Savage Mood Swing appeared to be The Trilobites' one big effort to produce a polished album for release on CD and crack into the Big Time. Here's a rundown of the tracks:
1. "Minibar Of Oblivion": a tale of creditcard-fuelled debauchery. 2. "The Girl From Mossad": song about being accosted by a sexy Israeli secret agent/terrorist at an int'l airport. 3. "She Was Alone": a morbid tale of drug-dealing intrigues. 4. "When I Blink": a nice commentary on the over-caffienated pace of our modern-yet-sick little world. 5. "Fuck=Love": a brutally fast-paced statement on the superficiality of many girl-meets-boy encounters. 6. "New Head": acidic statement on peer pressure ("I won't laugh at your jokes anymore"). 7. "I Feel Good": amphetamine-driven punk ode to the joys of hedonistic excess. 8. "Last Train": gritty punk ballad about riding the train home drunk. 9. "One Step Ahead": result of one too-many pulp novels about underworld organised crime. 10. "Don't Touch": about being a wretchedly frustrated plain drone in a world where beauty costs money. The Trilobites:
Mike Dalton: vocals / Martin Martini: guitar, vocal / Paul Skates: guitar / Scott Leighton: bass / Paul Styman: bass.

The Gasolines "Pura Veneta" 2008

This band just keeps making better records! Brazil's Gasolines are a superb band that produce consistently interesting and cool tracks. Their music is reverb with exotic percussion and original writing. I love this!

The Sadies "New Seasons" 2007

The Sadies return with their fifth studio album, New Seasons. Featuring the brotherly harmonies and dazzling guitar interplay of Dallas and Travis Good, New Seasons is the band's most confident studio album to date. The Sadies' inspired amalgam of psychedelic country rock, surf, bluegrass and Ennio Morricone-inspired instrumentals has made them the preeminent torchbearers of cosmic American music. This time, the band that has previously collaborated with Neko Case, Jon Spencer and Garth Hudson has brought Jayhawk Gary Louris to produce the album's gorgeously layered harmonies. New Seasons proves that The Sadies have the vocal chops to equal their instrumental mastery. The Sadies follow the roots of American music to their logical end and in a transcendent leap of faith, forge on to new planets, new worlds, New Seasons. This is a limited edition LP, there will only be one pressing of New Seasons on vinyl. Be sure to reserve yours now! All pre-orders of this album come with a free digital version, available in your Stash on release date. Check your Stash on October 2nd to download the tracks! - amazonIt's almost disorienting to imagine that a band as good as the Sadies can still find room to improve each time they go into the studio, but Canada's greatest contribution to Americana since Blue Rodeo have been consistently topping themselves with each new album, and their sixth, New Seasons, is another triumph. It should come as no surprise that the Sadies are in superb instrumental form here and demonstrating an effortless mastery of a range of different sounds and styles; "What's Left Behind" is a superb evocation of the late-period Byrds with guitar work that would make Clarence White envious, "The Trial" is a deeply atmospheric Southern gothic tale with just the right degree of ominous atmosphere, "A Simple Aspiration" could pass for a lost Paisley Underground classic with its subtly psychedelic guitar figures, "The Land Between" is simply gorgeous folk-rock, and the opening bluegrass breakdown makes you wish these guys had let listeners hear more than 48 seconds of it. But for a band that used to prefer playing instrumentals over approaching the vocal mike, brothers Dallas Good and Travis Good have learned to sing nearly as well as they play guitar, and their harmonies add another layer of beauty and mystery to their music. The group's songwriting continues to impress, with the heartbroken "Sunset to Dawn" and "The Trial" sounding uncannily like lost country classics and the two-part "The Last Inquisition" showing they know how to write a good scary guitar figure for themselves. While ex-Jayhawk Gary Louris helped produce New Seasons, precious little of his influence is audible here; the Sadies have created a powerful and evocative sound on their previous albums, and with New Seasons they've given that sound its ideal definition. - Review by Mark Demingtrax:

The Gasolines "Tanger Hotel" 2003

I like this band. Perhaps it is because they are illusive in the US, or maybe it's the simple direct arrangements. I'm not sure it matters. There's something direct, emotional, and real in their recordings. It's not intellectualized, and it's not lo-fi or no-fi. The Gasolines play honest instrumentals that I find myself coming back to. - Phil DirtThe Gasolines are on the road for over 15 years. According to legend, Alexandre Kanashiro, the band's guitarist, had an epiphanic moment in a show of Guitar Wolf in 1993 in the U.S. and decided to assemble a band to play Link Wray.
Back in Brazil, rode the Gasolines. What began with influences of Link Wray was increasing its range of influences and have been incorporated Latin rhythms, melodies movies Bang Bang, Latin Jazz and, of course, always with a footprint Surf.
There are already four CDs and a demo released. The first demo, "Wild and Primitive" is a rarity and unfortunately not be offered. The first demo CD, "Sonido de la Frontera," already shows that the band came with the first appearance of the version of Tico Tico no Cornmeal and reissues from Link Wray and Ennio Morricone, plus his own compositions. The second CD, "La Shereefa," brings more reinterpretations of movie themes and more influences from Latin music. The third CD, "Tanger Hotel," was first released by Allied Cheap, and brings some songs already present in the previous demo. The fourth and latest CD, "Pure Veneta," already has an even wider set of influences, from music by Italian, Latin, Dub, and a mandatory version of the band's primary influence, Link Wray.
The band, which today includes Alexandre Kanashiro on guitar, drums Fabio Barbosa, Julian Campbell on bass and Richard on guitar Granata percussion, has performed throughout Brazil and in various festivals (including first Campeonato Mineiro de Surf , Sons of summer night) and was winner of the first GDP, which occurred in 2007. With this, the band became godmother night Aquatic PiB 2009, which took place on July 9 in CB Bar in Sao Paulo.
In August, the band released one more contract and play every Friday of the month in Astronete with a different repertoire each week. Start with Link Wray and end only with classic Surf Music, going for a night and an Exotic Jungle Jazz. Almost a deconstruction of his main influences and references. You may see the details of each night on our agenda next door while listening to their albums. from: trustarvibrations.blogspottrax:

"Mambo Mania!" The Kings & Queens Of Mambo (Rhino CD)

Mambo Mania! may not be the last word on the Afro-Cuban music of the 1950s and '60s, but for beginners, it's a darn nice place to start. Rhino can usually be counted on to do its homework when assembling compilations, and this superb 18-song CD is no exception. Serious fans of what came to be called salsa will be more than familiar with such classics as Celia Cruz's "Tumba La Cana, Jibarito," Beny More's "Me Gusta Mas El Son" and Tito Puente's "Guaguanco Margarito" -- all of which are essential listening for even the most casual salseros. Recorded in 1949, the oldest song here is the infectious "Un Poquito De Tu Amor" by Desi Arnaz, who became well known for his role on the television comedy "I Love Lucy." From Tito Rodriguez, Cachao and the ultra-influential Machito to master percussionists/band leaders Ray Barretto and Mongo Santamaria, many of salsa's all-time greats are well represented by this outstanding collection. REDD KROSS "PHASESHIFTER" 1993

On Phaseshifter, Redd Kross has stripped away many of the '60s and '70s pop-culture trappings that figured prominently on earlier recordings (covers of Brady Bunch and Charles Manson songs, for instance).... As a result, the band (basically brothers Jeffrey and Steven McDonald) have brought their strong melodic sense, psychedelic punk/metal mix, and fine harmonies to the fore on standout tracks like "Lady in the Front Row" and "Monolith." The brothers' '70s-TV obsession certainly hasn't disappeared, though, as evidenced by songs like "After School Special" and the Partridge Family-inspired cut "Dumb Angel" (Susan Dey being replaced here by keyboardist Gere Fennelly); but they seem more bent on cutting straightforward and driving, power pop/rock anthems than going in for their '80s-style, HR Pufnstuf form of garage psychedelia, and even the paisley is conspicuously missing, replaced by t-shirts and jeans. Is the shift due in part to the pervasive influence of grunge and Nirvana? Maybe. But one should remember that, as early as 1980, Redd Kross was incorporating the same Black Flag, hardcore stylings that Cobain and company were admittedly inspired by. It doesn't really matter, though, since this album stands on it own just fine, especially considering the inclusion of one of the band's best rockers ("Crazy World") and most rewarding pop tunes ("Pay for Love"). For some great Redd Kross music, get both Phaseshifter and the band's 1997 release, Show World. (by Stephen Cook, All Music Guide)

The Gasolines "La Shereefa" 2000

This is a really nice instrumental surf album full of exotic percussion, fine playing, great melodies, and rich arranging. I've heard rumors of these guys for a while, but this is the first time I've been able to hear their music. The sound is a little ambient or raw, but it doesn't seem to interfere with total enjoyment. The originals are very well written, and the covers are mostly rearranged obscuros, or at least not often covered. I'm looking forward to more from the Gasolines.
A primeira demo, Wild and Primitive, é uma raridade.

Tommy Ridgley "The New Orleans King Of The Stroll" (Ric Label 1960-1964)

Excellent collection of tracks recorded in the early 60's for Ric Records and reissued by Rounder. This is gritty R&B from New Orleans with great sound quality. The horns are riffing, the beat is strong and Tommy is in fine form. The final 2 tracks are from a rare single on the Johen label cut in 1964. These are also good and the last track "I Want Some Money Baby" may be the best on the whole disc. Beautiful stuff from a long ago era. (Record Runner)Tommy Ridgley was a solid R&B vocalist who was quite successful with novelty tunes and silly songs, but he was also a good romantic balladeer. This 15-track collection mostly covers Ridgley material from 1960 to 1964 for the Ric label, and ranges from laments like "Please Hurry Home" and "I Love You Yes I Do" to such comic material and dance-based numbers as "Double Eyed Whammy" and "The Girl from Kooka Monga." Ridgley wasn't as booming or dynamic as some other Crescent City vocalists, but he made several nice period pieces and soul tunes, several of which are included on this set.(Ron Wynn, Allmusic)trax:

The Barracudas "Garbage Dump Tapes - House Of Kicks Sessions 1982" 1990

Formed in London, England in 1978 as a neo-surfing band their lone UK Top 40 entry in 1980 was the derivative "Summer Fun".Wills made a pair of albums with a group called the Fortunate Sons (originally a trio, but later a quartet with Chris Wilson), whose bassist wound up in the Barracudas when Wills and Gluck decided to restart the band in early '89. The first order of business was to polish up the tapes of the lost second album from 1982. House of Kicks' belated release as Garbage Dump isn't exactly the Rosetta Stone of '80s music, but it is a potent dose of solid garage rock, albeit without the same tuneful charm as Mean Time (with which it shares eight songs); in hindsight, that underscores the roles Chris Wilson and Pete Gage played on that album. Overall, the biggest failings are the vocals, which are hoarsely unattractive and rather weak in the harmony department, and the unimaginative, overly nostalgic production style. Jeremy Gluck (vocals), Robin Wills (guitar & vocals), David Buckley (bass & vocals) and Nick Turner (drums)

The Gasolines "Sonido De La Frontera" 1998

banda de Surf Music instrumental de São Paulo (SP). Coisa da Ordinary Records, muito bom. No arquivo tem o encarte.E tirado a partir de um CDr, daí a qualidade de gravação é ótima.
EXOTIC INSTRUMENTAL MACUMBA LATIN ROCK’N’ROLL FROM SÃO PAULO BRASIL - Founded in 1993 by guitarist ALEXANDRE KANASHIRO, the GASOLINES play instrumental rock'n'roll with afro-latin and global influences. The brazilians' repertoire blends psychedelic cumbia, guitarrada, calypso, dub, and especially american rock'n'roll of the 1950s-60s. - discogsThe band started their activities in 1993 as a trio (guitar, drums and bass) playing rockabilly, surf instrumentals and rock and roll from 50s. After some line up changes, they recorded their first demo album on 1996 (“Wild & Primitive”) with a very limited pressing. The band added some percussion, to get a little bit of a Latin flavour in their sound. Since then their repertoire is composed only of surf and rock instrumentals with Latin and Brazilian musical influences. Their second CD, titled “Sonido de la Frontera”(Sound of The Frontier) issued on 1998 shows the band's new sound directions. Their third CD titled “La Shereefa”, was issued on 2000 and shows a more rehearsed band, with great guitar riffs and some excellent instros composed by the group musicians. On their last (3rd) album on CD, the band included some Spanish songs ("Gaspacho", "Hotel Loneliness" and "Malagenã"), with clever arrangements, mixing the surf music with the sound of the traditional Flamenco guitar sound. The Gasolines used to tour in São Paulo and other near cities and their current line is Alexandre Kanashiro (guitar), Fábio Barbosa (drums), Cesar Vaz (bass) and Gustavo Barreto (drums, percussion).

Roy Head "An Introduction to Roy Head" 197

This is a repackaging of Head's Crazy Cajun LP from the 1970s called "Same People" with three non-LP tracks added. And since Head is one of the finest white soul shouters ever, it's a pleasure to have these recordings available. (Roots & Rhythm)Damned few artists have ever convincingly pulled off the "white man's JAMES BROWN" trip, or would even dare try...there's Detroit soul rocker MITCH RYDER...new millennium Brit belter JAMES HUNTER...and the woefully underrated ROY HEAD. An impossible to categorize party starter not unlike LONNIE MACK and DELBERT MCCLINTON, HEAD busts out sixteen sweaty, juke joint-ready slabs of hard country, swaggering southern soul and bad-ass rock & roll punctuated by throbbing bass lines, red hot horns, and head-smackin' screams on this shattering platter. The chooglin' funk of SOUL TRAIN is a greasy laundry list of RNB legends in the vein of SHORTY LONG's MOTOWN gem FUNCTION AT THE JUNCTION; HEAD also slashes his way through impressive throw downs of JUNIOR PARKER's DRIVING WHEEL, DOUG SAHM's Tex-Mex mix SHE'S ABOUT A MOVER, and THE SOUL SISTERS' cult classic I CAN'T STAND IT. He may be best remembered for his lone mid-sixties smash TREAT HER RIGHT...which isn't included here...but even without it, AN INTRODUCTION TO ROY HEAD is a rafter-raisin' boogie-man blast straight from the Texas roadhouse.(Crawdaddy)

"Roots Of Mambo" 1930-1950

Before the mambo craze hit the U.S. in the 1950s, there were hints, both subtle and obvious, of its development. The music on Roots of Mambo 1930-1950, along with its liner notes, written in both French and English (though the French ones seem to be a bit more comprehensive), trace the chronology of this development, from "Saint Louis Blues" to "The Peanut Vendor" to "Cubana Be, Cubana Bop" to "Manteca," and explain how different cultural styles (Afro-Caribbean rhythms, African-American jazz) ended up creating Latin jazz (which the notes incorrectly equate with mambo and salsa -- they're related, not identical). But history aside, what's best about Roots of Mambo 1930-1950 is the music itself. As the tracks are listed -- for the most part -- chronologically, the progression from the bluesier sounding "Doin' the Rhumba" by Cab Calloway to the full-out meandering, dark polyrhythms of Dizzy Gillespie and his orchestra in "Afro-Cuban Suite" (the trumpeter, as a bandleader, is included 11 times on the two-disc set, which is fitting, as he was one of the main contributors and innovators of Latin jazz) is heard clearly, like pieces being put into a puzzle. There are a lot of great horn riffs and solos, pulsating beats, and impassioned singing (Calloway even affects a hyper-trilled "R" in "The Congo Congo" as he talks about the extreme popularity of the new music) that make the album move nicely (and it's long -- each disc clocks in significantly over an hour). When "Lamento," Aimé Barelli's version of "Cubano Be, Cubana Bop," closes the second album, the audience is set up well for what is to come next. The opening notes of Pérez Prado's "Mambo No. 5" can almost be heard as Barelli and his orchestra play their last riff, and if listeners weren't already turned on to the energy of mambo beforehand, there's no way they can avoid being so now. (Allmusic)John Lee Hooker’s « Mambo Chillen », The Hawketts « Mardi Gras Mambo », Earl Bostic’s « Mambostic » and the name of one of Willie Egans’ record labels – just a few examples of the influence of the mambo wich should be familiar to many readers. By the mid-fifties the term « mambo » - much as salsa was to be a couple of decades later – had really become a catch - all term within the music business for « exotic » sounding music. « We were trying to play a calypso-type style », recalls Hawketts drummer John Boudreaux of the  aforementionned number on www.bestofneworleans.com, and Hooker’s piece is hardly Afro-Cuban. But just what was the mambo ? This double CD sets out to explain. The detailed notes (even more detailed in the French version) define the style as the union of Afro-Cuban music and American jazz, an evolution from Cuban forms such as the danzon, the son, and particurarly on this evidence, the rumba. Given the early dates of many of these titles, it is no surprise to find some very seretypical attitudes - the Congo seems to be the thirties’ punter’s choice for country of origin (please pipe down at the back, you ethnomusicologists) – and perharps equally un surprisingly, Cab Calloway is responsible for a lot of this, mugging his way shamelessly through several tracks with terrible lyrics – « chili con conga , that’s a new song-a, chili con conga, let’s beat the bonga’indeed ! – but allied to some very convincing sounding music from his orchestra. Elsewhere both Duke Ellinghton and Louis Armstrong turn in fine, if contrasting, treatments of the ground-breaking « Peanut Vendor », and the collection opens in fine stylewith Manolo Castro And His Havana Yatch Club Orchestra’s 1931 rendering of « Saint Louis Blues », which certainly does have the spanish tinge. Moving on, actual Cuban musicians become more involved with the mainland’s musical out put and the late forties « Cubop » experiments of Dizzie Gillespie are well-represented (ranging from some very pretentious items to several lovely « authentic » Afro-Cuban sounds), as are Machito’s recordings, though these are most often recalled nowadays more for Charlie Parker’s presence. Throughout, the Cuban groups are lively and unfailingly interesting. Some readers may like to note the presence of such sidemen with R&B pedigrees as Cecil Payne and Al Sears. Particularly note worthy and intriging are the two 1950 titles by Erskine Hawkins, R&B sides (one sung by Jimmy Mitchell), though with a definitive Latin persuasion. This is just one more facet of a truly fascinating set. Norman DARWEN – BLUES & RHYTHM

High Noon "Texas Style" 1994

High Noon formed in Austin, Texas in 1988 through a mutual love of Rockabilly music. They then proceeded to be named Austin's Best Rockabilly Band seven years in a row. During that time they released a multitude of 45s, 78s, CDs and even a 10" disc. They played not only throughout the United States, but in Russia, Scandinavia, Japan, Central Europe and The Canary Islands. They even played at Carnegie Hall with Ronnie Dawson and performed on the Late Night with Conan O'Brien Show in 1994. In 1996, they decided to take a break and do other things. Since 1996, Kevin Smith played with a wide variety of Austin bands including the Asylum Street Spankers, 8 1/2 Souvenirs, Hot Club Of Cowtown and many others. Sean Mencher moved to Maine where produced bands from New York, Boston and Vermont. He also formed his own group, Sean Mencher and his Pine Tree Three, and performed regularly with Wayne "The Train" Hancock. Shaun Young formed Shaun Young and his Texas Trio, as well as playing drums for the Horton Brothers and another act he helped form, the Jive Bombers. A turning point was when they got together for a reunion at the Viva Las Vegas 2000 festival.
In January of 2002, High Noon went back into the studio with Billy Horton as producer and recorded what turned out to be "What Are You Waiting For?". Soon thereafter, Sean Mencher returned to Austin and High Noon officially got back together. - from rockabillybashtrax:

The Alohas "Get Leid With The Alohas" 2000

These whippersnappers happen to be Australians, and the 10 tracks here are as stylistically dead on as it gets – like the Rutles with wetsuits. What more can be said?Exploding onto the Australian east coast scene some years ago, The Alohas have earned their reputation as one of the most unique and powerful live acts to play the local circuit. The Alohas sound is fuelled by 1960's garage punk and surf twang of Dick Dale, Sonics, Atlantics, and the Remains. Their high-energy instrumental sounds and jungle rhythm groove makes for an evening of twisting go-go action stomp! The Alohas have supported the likes of 60's surf legends – The Atlantics as well as oz rock acts The Celibate Rifles, The Crusaders, The Finkers and Thurston Howlers. - from: http://www.citadel-records.com/The Alohas:

Plas Johnson "The Best Of Plas Johnson" (Wolf CD)

This CD showcases the tenor work of Plas Johnson with his brother Ray on piano. Plas is playing in the manner of of such players as Lee Allen, Al Sears, Hal Singer, Sam Taylor, Jimmy Wright, etc. George Jenkins, Lionel Hampton's drummer for most of the 40's is also featured. Much of this CD was originally recorded and released under George Jenkins' leadership. Includes all of Plas's hits from the mid 50's: "Last Call", "Plasma", "Blue Jean Shuffle". Ray Johnson provides some great boogie woogie and jazz riffs, while George Jenkins exuberant playing exemplifies his work with Lionel Hampton and later Charlie Barnet. (Blues World)Plas Johnson's seductive tenor sound has been utilized on many studio sessions, including -- most notably -- the Pink Panther film (1963). A more versatile player than one might think, Johnson sounds equally at home in blues, R&B-ish, and hard bop settings. He recorded a single in New Orleans (1950), moved to Los Angeles, and was quickly established as a popular studio musician. Johnson worked with Johnny Otis and Charles Brown, recorded dates as a leader for Tampa (1956-1957), Score, Capitol (1958-1960), Ava (1964), and Concord (1975-1976), worked with the Capp-Pierce Juggernaut, and toured with the Gene Harris Superband in 1990. Hoodoo Gurus "Stoneage Romeos" 1984

"Whoo Doo That Guru?"A big call, but the Hoodoo Gurus deliver. With influences from all the sixties garage psych, punk bands and so much more, the Gurus brought it into the eighties. Not a dud track to be heard, with great guitars, pounding drums, rockin' basslines and best of all, catchy melodies. The album version of Leilani is much better than the single (sans bass player) and I Want You Back just makes you tap your feet and sing along. For those people not in Oz, you would've missed out on some fine music videos, particularly the plastiscene dinosaurs in I Want You Back, as well as the much better original cover. If you only own one Australian album, this is the one (or get a greatest hits compilation if you really must). Following albums were not as good, but just about every single they released was a killer. - Reviewer: "sequeiraj" (Sydney, Australia)Hoodoo Gurus:

The All Nighters "Drink the Night" 2007

Instrumental spacey surf guitar!Originally created out of a pure love and interest for many different forms of musical expression, the All-Nighters continue to break down the boundaries limiting the sonic freedom of instrumental bands that have come before them. Their revolutionary sound draws influence from a wide variety of classic genres, all combining to form a very modern and refreshing approach to "instro/surf" music. They harness the energy and personality of surf, punk, country, rockabilly, ska, gypsy, classical and others to form a intermixed collage of sounds and emotions which flows with flawless focus; despite the often drastic changes in style, like the soundtrack to a great movie. - cdbabytrax:

"Starry-Eyed Serenaders" Dreamy Doo Wop, Romantic R&B;, Passionate Pop 1955-1962

“The whole is programmed excellently… making this a genuine collector’s delight.” - 4/5 Record Collector
“Its more than likely that this is the first time many of these tracks have been issued on a domestic CD… a treat” - Now Dig ThisThe collection spans 1955 to 1962, the golden years of rock & roll, and draws on the catalogues of a wide array of labels ranging from majors to small indies. Virtually all of the recordings feature vocal groups, mainly as the featured artists, but occasionally in a support role, but there are also a handful of solo performances which fit nicely with the romantic theme. True to form Stuart Colman has largely eschewed familiar artists or titles in favour of lesser-heard recordings. So key interpreters such as the Clovers, the Crests and the Harptones, sit alongside lesser-knowns such as the Electras, the Lavenders and Robert Peebles. Many rare sides are included within the set, sides that usually sell for telephone numbers in the collectors’ world.

Quite a few tracks are new to CD. (FS)

The Raunch Hands "Have A Swig!" 1990

Highlights here include a lascivious stomp, "Everybody Loves Yo' Mama," and the less-than-existential "Naked, Naked, Naked." More power to these guys, whose gutter-view perspective has undeniable aroma and charm. In their mid-'80s heyday (such as it was), New York's Raunch Hands were retro-rock representatives of that presumed golden age of sleaze, the mid-'50s to mid-'60s. Thus El Rauncho Grande offers neo-rockabilly, neo-R&B and even neo-Mex, all filtered through the band's beer-heightened (lowered?) sensibilities.trax:

The All Nighters "Dance 'til Dawn" 2006

Instrumental surf-inspired party rock and spacey soundscapesTheir latest album, entitled "Dance 'till Dawn: Pieces of a Lucid Dream" (released on their own Indie label Acid Moon in 2006) proves to be the bands most ambitous, well produced, and diverse offering yet. Ranging from simpler poppy surf/rock/country inspired numbers, to more mature, epic, adventurous soundscapes, the song styles vary from track to track mimicking the randomness of dreams. Guest cello, slide, and violin players were brought in to add thoughtfullness and depth to certain tracks while others are kept to the straight-up guitar/ bass/ drum set-up. The album is a soulful roller coaster ride of musical stimulation with a sense of variation that will leave listeners moved and intrigued. - cdbabytrax:
