The Cowslingers "Coast to Coast" 2002

The Cowslingers rock! They are now called the Whiskey Dare Devils, but they still play great music. Check these guys out! - by Rotax RonI love this CD. It's a perfect blend of rock and roll, rockabilly, and country punk. The songs are great, and the production really kicks. This is what real rock and roll is all about. I don't know how these guys releases keep getting better and better, but they do. This lived in my car CD player for months. Do yourself a favor and check it out. It's going to be your new favorite band. - By Dexter
This is my favorite Cowslingers record. Epic Cowboy Song is a classic, Topeka Destroyer rocks, and Big Star is hilarious. If you you're going to buy only one record get this. - by 666Jimbo666

"La Noire" Vol 1 - Have Mercy Uncle Sam

A rollicking set of classic and should-be classic tunes on Chess, King, Fame, Jubilee and other iconic labels – plus some comparably rare gems – all in touch with the bluesy roots, and laying the groundwork for the soul scenes to come! This first La Noire compilation has one killer tune after another, many from that pivotal early 60s period when the influences of the grander rhtyhm & blues orchestras of the preceding decade were finding their way into a stripped down to the bare essentials sound – with crack rhythm sections, tight horns, and masterful vocals. Includes tracks by solo legends like Bobby Bland and Koko Taylor, the tight group sounds of The Spellbinders, The X-Cellents, and much more. Great stuff! Includes "Just You And I" by Guitar Red, "You Can't Judge A Book By It's Cover" by Dell Mack, "Don't Cry No More" by Bobby Bland, "Can't Stay Away From You" by Tarheel Slim and Little Ann, "Hey, Little Willie" by The X-Cellents, "Wang Dang Doodle" by Koko Taylor, "Uncle Bud" by Billy Bland, "Ride On Red, Ride On" by Louisiana Red and more.  © 1996-2016, Dusty Groove, Inc.trax:

DINAH WASHINGTON "ORIGINAL QUEEN OF SOUL"

"...an impeccably compiled 3CD anthology spanning three decades..." Record Collector
"...a wonderful set...spanning Dinah's entire and hugely influential career..." Soul & Jazz & Funk
4/5 Soul Bag
"Superb" ABS Magazine
"A perfect, career-encompassing tribute" Music Week
'A rewarding retrospective' Glitterhouse RecordsDinah Washington was arguably the first Queen of Soul, having gained herself the soubriquet ‘The Queen’ in music circles of the early 1950s through the volume of hit records and performance notices achieved in the first decade of her career. She rose from the clubs and bars of Southside Chicago in the mid-1940s to enjoy a wealth of hit singles – some 40 reaching the Billboard R&B charts through the 1950s as Mercury Records reaped the value of her talent with almost as many albums.
It wasn’t until 1959 that Dinah scored her first major Hot 100 hit, with ‘What A Diff’rence A Day Makes’, a turning point which also brought about hit duets with label-mate Brook Benton. With the new decade came a move to Roulette Records, where producer Henry Glover, as well as recording her on classy ballads and standards, invigorated her sound, turning back to the blues, whilst remaining at the forefront of the emergent soul market. Just as her career was about to reach new heights, galvanised by a new and diverse style, on the evening of December 14, 1963, Dinah took several sleeping pills after a heavy drinking session and didn’t make it to the next morning.
Soul music writer and broadcaster Clive Richardson presents Original Queen of Soul, an overview of the recording career of Dinah Washington, which also serves to commemorate the 50th anniversary of her death. The 80 tracks include hard-to-find club-blues recordings from the 1940s, album tracks and singles in a range of styles and moods from the 1950s, and a selection of her later work under the guidance of Henry Glover from the early 1960s.
The 3CD set features many of her hits including ‘Baby Get Lost’ (R&B #1 1949), ‘Cold, Cold Heart’ (R&B #3 1951), ‘I Don’t Hurt Anymore’ (R&B #3 1954), ‘What A Diff’rence A Day Makes’ (R&B #4, Pop #8 1959), ‘Baby (You’ve Got What It Takes)’ (R&B #1, Pop #5 1960), ‘A Rockin’ Good Way’ (R&B #1, Pop #7 1960) and ‘September In The Rain’ (R&B #5, Pop #23 1961). Among the eminent bandleaders and arrangers collaborating with her are Lionel Hampton, Lucky Thompson, Cootie Williams, Jimmy Cobb, Hal Mooney and Quincy Jones.
‘What A Diff’rence A Day Makes’ was nominated the Best Rhythm & Blues Performance at the Grammy awards in 1959, and posthumously she has been inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame (as an early influence). Her celebrated version of ‘Mad About The Boy’ was a UK hit following its use in a Levi’s commercial in 1992. Accompanied by an illustrated 20pp booklet annotated by Clive, Original Queen of Soul is a fitting tribute to the talent and career of the first Queen of Soul.

The Nomads "Sonically Speaking" 1991

Based in Stockholm, the Nomads have stood out from other garage rock revivalists because of the intensity of their performances and the wide range of their influences, which extend beyond the usual '60s bands to encompass '70s punk, heavy metal, rockabilly, and blues.Their first release was a crude remake of the Sonics' "Psycho"; the band pressed 500 copies of this self-financed single in 1981 but had to discard 50 copies because of defects. They followed this with another single, a blistering rendition of "Night Time" by the Strangeloves, and received wider recognition with their first mini-album, Where the Wolf Bane Blooms. In 1984, they conducted their first European tour and garnered attention in the United States for their Outburst album. Despite successful attempts to broaden their sound, such as using horns on a recording of Jeff Conolly's "She Pays the Rent" and a trashy synthesizer on the Suicide-influenced "My Deadly Game," they have not managed to gain more than a small cult following in the States; this may be because they have recorded only a limited number of original songs. Nonetheless, they have managed to create some genuinely exciting, if not particularly innovative, music. ~ Todd Kristeltrax:

Julien Clerc "Amours Secretes… …Passion Publique." Live 1991

Un album vraiment fabuleux! Surtout j'aime les chançons: "Femmes, je vous aime" et "Le coeur trop grand pour moi". Achetez-le, mes amies et amis!! - Par Veronica FrancoAmours Secrètes, Passion Publique is a live performance from French pop star Julien Clerc. Despite his popularity in his home country, this is a very dull affair that leaves much to be desired. The music is very simplistic and the way the music is arranged is simply terrible. The guitar sounds too clean and processed, the music lacks drive, and Clerc is a very uninspired vocalist. This is not a representation of his entire output, but the approach and style of the album does not translate very well. This is only recommended for his dedicated fans, and even they should beware of the poor music found here. - AllMusic Review by Bradley Torreano

King Biscuit Boy - Epic, 1974

Produced by Alan Toussaint. Richard is backed by The Meters and Dr. John (Mac Rebennack).  This often referred to as the "Brown Derby Album".King Biscuit Boy/Richard Newell is a Canadian Paul Butterfield, which I mean as a compliment, and when he sings lead with producer Allen Toussaint doing backups it's the ultimate white blues fantasy. In reality, though, Newell's high-strung earnestness and virtuoso harmonica can't take this album away from Toussaint, and like so many of Toussaint's albums it's only half great. But since it divides neatly into a side of Toussaint songs (great) and a side of Newell's (good), this time you can't blame that on the auteur. Jess Roden "Jess Roden" 1974

“Jess Roden” the album, was recorded partly in London at Island’s Basing Street Studios and Olympia Studios and partly in New Orleans where the talents of The New Orleans Horns, Allen Toussaint and Art Neville were used to give the album that trademark New Orleans jazz and blues feel.“Jess Roden” has claims to be one of the finest debut solo albums ever recorded and it remains a mystery to me and a lot of my musician and writing friends that he isn’t more widely known and mentioned when the subject of world class vocalists come up. Maybe it is the mixture in styles and this worlds need to pigeon hole. The crossing of the boundaries between soul, jazz, rock, blues and funk may well have been what prevented him from achieving the worldwide success he should have had. It certainly wasn’t down to a lack of talent. Sadly if you mention the name Jess Roden to most of the general public you will get a blank stare in return. Mention his name to a musician of his time or one of us that have been enjoying his music for years and you will be told with no lack of passion that he is the greatest neglected talent that Britain has ever produced …… and for Jess Roden that may well be fame enough.© Martin Leedham. Henri Salvador "Chambre Avec Vue" 2000

- ("extrait du guide Discothèque Idéale Fnac")Henri Salvador was born in 1917 in Cayenne, French Guiana. He studied music in Paris and played with Django Reinhardt on one occasion. He started playing guitar seriously in Paris in 1935. His stay in the interior of Brazil is evident in much of his music. His sound is a combination of Parisian cabaret, Brazilian bossa nova, and French Antillean influences. This particular album shows his range of influences very well. His unguent vocals infuse an ambience of sensuous silk and soft tropical breezes. He also displays his great sense of humor in his lyrics, for which he is renowned in France and his homeland. "Jardin d'Hiver" tells of all the images he would like to have inhabit his winter garden. It is a touching portrait and sung very soulfully. The instrumental accompaniment throughout the album is very much muted but exceptional in its evocation of the ambience that his voice creates. The duet with Françoise Hardy on "Le Fou de la Reine" is a fine example of the finesse of both artists. The album won the Victoire de la Musique award in France for the year 2000. A highly recommended introduction to this prolific artist.trax:

Eric Burdon & The Animals "Eric Is Here" 1967

Eric is Here is a great album. I bought this album a while ago and put it on the the other day and I was blown away and extremely moved. Highly underrated and rarely heard this CD is know as being an oddity in Eric's vast and varied catalogue. W/ The Animals the music was bluesy r&b (some of the best by not only the British Invasion Groups but of all time) As Eric Burdon and the Animals (different group) it was amazing psycedelica esp. on Winds of Change. This album came in between both of those incarnations. And has aged very well by these ears. It is representive of what was going on at the time. The songs are jazzy, orchestrated pop that contains influence from the Beach Boys primarily Pet Sounds. It also has a soul/ Motown feel to it with a touch of Otis Redding and country Jerry Lee Lewis. Eric's vocals are very impassioned and he sings with conviction in interepting these songs like Billie Holiday (one of his idols) and Frank Sinatra.
1. In The Night sets the mood of the album. It has a dark and dreamy sound to it. All these tracks are great really so out of 10 this song is a 9.
2. Mama Told Me Not To Come is the song made famous by Three Dog Night. The intro is very Baroque like and totally turns swampy. It may not be as definitive as TDN's version but Eric does a great job interpreting. I would rate 8 of 10.
3. I Think It's Going To Rain is a sad song about lost love which most of this album is. Making that the common theme. Darkness, love (mostly lost), and Redemption. Definitly 9 out of 10.
4. On This Side Of Goodbye is another song about lost love. Again, 9 out of 10.
5. That Ain't Where It's At is one of the more known songs of this album. And justifibly so. It is one of the best tracks and most up tempo. Contains some real anger. While not an all time favorite for me, it is catchy so 10 out of 10.
6. True Love (Comes Only Once In A Lifetime)is really the turning point for me on this album. It is definitly one of three or four standout tracks for me. It has an oriental sound to it at the beginning w/ female background vocalists kinda like the Ronettes (which I admit is a stretch but I can't think of any other way to descibe it) making it weird and exhilerating at the same time. Eric vocals on this song are simply astounding! The raw emotion of hurt and love he conveys especially at the end! What a powerful track! This is the song that really sold me this album. A very high 10 out of 10.
7. Help Me Girl is probably the most famous song from this set but to me it is a 9 out of 10. It is a great song but not as emotion as some of the best moments on here.
8. Wait Til Next Year is the weakest song on the album. The way Eric interprets the words are right on but just don't correspond well with the music. Making this the least memorable of any of the songs on the set. A 6 out of 10.
9. Losin' Control is a good song not great but the urgency of the music and way Eric sings make it still a worthwile track. 8 out of 10.
10. It's Not Easy is quite simply a catchy, amazing song. This is definitly another highlight on this album. Absolutely essential, another 10 out of 10. Songs 10 - 12 are a great triple shot to end the album.
11. The Biggest Bundle Of Them All is very Motownish. Definitly one of the better tracks. 9 out of 10.
12. It's Been A Long Time Comin' begins w/ a crack from a snare drum and establishes the climax of this album. This is absolutly a highpoint and may be the best song on this album w/ tracks 10 and 6. This song is soulful! It has an Otis Redding feel. The perfect ending to a great album. 10 out of 10.
I hope this review has been very helpful and persuades you to invest in buying this wonderful album. It is well worth the time and money. Thank you.(By Brian M. Smallwood, Shindig)trax:

LaBelle "Nightbirds" 1974

The finest of Labelle's original albums, Nightbirds was recorded in New Orleans with funkmeister Allen Toussaint handling the production chores and, one assumes, members of the Meters taking care of the session work. Worth the price of admission for the Bob Crewe-written "Lady Marmalade" alone, the album veers between the strutting New Orleans, horn-laden singles and more mainstream pop material. (Rob Bowman, Allmusic)One of the best albums of the 70s, there's no doubt. The vocal harmonies, the arrangements, and Toussaint's production are perfect. Possibly Patti's best vocal performance ever. Sarah and Nona also shine. The harmonies that these women created have never been duplicated. The tension in their voices, each unique and powerful in their own right, are stupendous. Highly recommended for people who want a true taste of 70s soul at it's absolute best.(The Soul Detective)trax:

--Sylvie Devilettetrax disc 1:

Ralph Stanley & Friends "Saturday Night & Sunday Morning" 1992

Most people don't remember when bluegrass lived next to its brethren on country radio and on country charts. Ralph Stanley, of course, does remember. On this remarkable 1992 recording, he invites a myriad of guests from the whole of country music, not from just bluegrass, and the result is a collection that highlights the timeless connection between all of country music's styles: sincerity and reality conveyed through simple melodies and heartfelt singing. Disc 1 focuses on the secular, disc 2 the spiritual, and along the way, Stanley matches his raw tenor with everyone from bluegrassers (Bill Monroe, Jimmy Martin, Charlie Waller, Larry Sparks, Ricky Skaggs, Alison Krauss) to honky-tonkers (George Jones, Dwight Yoakam) to storytellers (Tom T. Hall) to country divas (Emmylou Harris, Patty Loveless). No matter who sits in, Stanley's wonderfully unrefined voice and fleet banjo hold fast. --Marc GreilsamerThis 31-cut, two-disc project is a masterpiece reflecting both the secular and spiritual sides of Ralph Stanley's artistry. It is also a concept he mulled over in his mind for some time before executing it. The idea was to include performers from both the country and bluegrass worlds doing songs that somehow fit into the Stanley Brothers' tradition. With the inclusion of some Stanley originals as well as tunes written by Bill Monroe, Dwight Yoakam, Tom T. Hall, and Roy McMillan, this is not only a diverse compilation of material, but also one that never fails to interest the listener. Certainly the start-off number, McMillan's "Mountain Folks," which is done up just right by Ralph Stanley & the Clinch Mountain Boys, sets the tone. Followed by a duet between Stanley and Yoakam on the infectious "Down Where the River Bends," it quickly moves through to Stanley's final secular duet with fellow bluegrasser Bill Monroe. Their teamwork on "Letter From My Darling" is monumental. The spiritual numbers include Stanley and Tom T. Hall on the well-known gospel number "Rank Stranger" and Carter Stanley's sadly descriptive "The Fields Have All Turned Brown." But the most beguiling track is the fervent version of Yoakam's tribute song to his coal mining grandfather, Luther Tibbs. "Miner's Prayer" is given a gospel overhaul, making what was already a brilliant creation into an even more ageless tune that will be played, loved, and remembered for many generations to come. Ralph Stanley's high lonesome sound fits in perfectly here and is endlessly effective. Outstanding performances in both categories come from Patty Loveless, Allison Krauss, George Jones, Jimmy Martin, and Emmylou Harris, to name just a few. A concept that works well for Ralph Stanley and his many friends, this is certainly a project that belongs in every bluegrass or gospel collection.(Allmusic)

Madeline Bell "Bell's A Poppin'" The Story Of Madeline Bell (Marginal 105)

Though born in New Jersey, smooth soul diva Madeline Bell enjoyed her greatest success in the United Kingdom (where she began living in 1963), and her first album, 1967's Bell's a Poppin', is a thoroughly enjoyable example of British pop record-making at its most poised and professional. Bell had a world-class voice and sang supper-club soul in the manner of Dionne Warwick and Dusty Springfield (the latter of whom was a friend of Bell's and often used her as a backing vocalist); those looking for Southern soul grit will be disappointed, but Bell's a Poppin' is a marvelous example of the British equivalent of Brill Building pop. The arrangements are clever and sophisticated, the musicians are spot-on throughout, producer John Franz adds just the right amount of polish without rubbing away the personality of the music, and Bell's vocals tell a story just beautifully, boasting smarts and understated passion while maintaining a firm sense of control and balance throughout. Franz also rounded up some great songs for Bell, with Doc Pomus & Mort Shuman, Burt Bacharach & Hal David, John Sebastian, and Nick Ashford & Valerie Simpson among the tunesmiths represented on this disc. Fans of the slicker side of Northern soul and great mid-'60s pop-soul will delight in Bell's a Poppin'. [RPM's 2004 reissue adds a handful of non-LP singles that are every bit as enjoyable, especially "Don't Come Running to Me" and an interesting cover of the Beatles' "You Won't See Me.”](Mark Deming, Allmusic)

The Maharajas "Something Moody & Groovy" 1998

Rare 1998 Italian release on Teen Sound is in mono. Includes former members of The Stomachmouths playing "'60s inspired Greeky moody pop."The Maharajas was formed in the late 90's by Jens Lindberg with the intention of playing Greek-inspired moody 60's music. After being in fuzzdriven, hard stompin..garagerockbands since the mid 80's (Crimson Shadows, Stomachmouths, Highspeed V, Blind Shag etc.) he was looking for a new take on the genre. The first Maharajas album was out in 1998, a 10" 8-track album on the Italian label Teen Sound Records called "Something moody... & groovy!" In the beginning the band saw some members come and go until drummer Anders Öberg brought Ulf Guttormsson in on bassguitar.
Together with Pake on organ they released a 7" on Loser Records ("Wait & Wonder") and later on in 2001 ex-Strollers singer Mathias Lilja joined the band after Pake had left. They were now ready for their first full-length album: 13 songs recorded&mixed during 5 hectic days in the autumn of 2001 and "H-minor" saw the light late 2002 on Teen Sound Records.
2004 ment a new record and also a new label. Low Impact Records (responsible for all Strollers releases) decided to sign the band and with "Unrelated Statements" the Maharajas presented a tighter and more genuine sound. Still true to the trademark of moody songs with a lot of sad harmonies, it had a lot more fuzzguitars, farfisa organs and howlin..vocals than earlier recordings with the group. The album was produced by MÃ¥ns P. MÃ¥nsson, the singer of The Maggots; a band that he along with Jens & Anders had started previous to Maharajas. The record was well received especially among 60's enthusiasts but it seemed to strike a nerve with all kinds of people and was heavily rotated on the "Little Steven's Underground Garage" radio show.
In 2005 the album "A Third Opinion" was released, recorded in the same tradition as always; manifesting what they love in 60's Garage/Pop/R&B and Rock'n'Roll. During summer 2006 Ricard Harryson took over the drum stool and shortly after the "Weekend Sparks" EP was released on Crusher Records..
As 2007 turned in to 2008 a fourth full length album saw the pale Swedish winter light and named it self "In Pure Spite". And Jens has once again found himself to be back in the fuzz-swamp (and sometimes off to the pub). To be continued... - cdbabytrax:

- Par Julien COLLIATI was introduced to Alain Souchon when a friend gave me the song _Rive Gauche_. This song grew on me after listening to it a few times. I searched and discovered that this song was on his _Au Ras Des Paquerettes_ CD from last year. I listened to some samples, songs from ARDP and songs from _C'est Deja Ca_ (his previous CD from 1993). I'm not sure why but I decided to buy CDC instead of ARDP, but I wasn't disappointed at all. I loved this CD from the start. The quality is consistent throughout the entire CD, and I like most of the songs. The one song that I'm not really crazy about is (#6) _Arlette Laquiller_, but it is a favorite with most people. (#1) _Foule Sentimentale_ has a catchy tune that makes me want to sing along. And there is some truth to the lyrics. This is one of my favorite songs on the CD. BTW, lyrics are included in the CD. My second favorite song is (#9) _Le Fil_, followed by (#10 _Le Zebre_, (#8) _Sans Queue Ni Tete_, (#11) _C'est Deja Ca_, and (#4) _Les Regrets_.
Many of these songs can also be found on his live CD from 1995, _Defoule Sentimentale_ which is a 2-CD set containing 29 songs. This would make a good second Alain Souchon CD after _C'est Deja Ca_ since it will contain songs you already know and like, and it will also introduce you to many of his other great songs! - Par FVQOH

The Surfdusters "Surf After Dark" 1998

Vancouver’s The Surfdusters were Western Canada’s premier rock and surf instrumental band throughout the 1990s and into the 21st century. Founded in 1989 by lead guitarist Ralph Johnston and rhythm guitarist Rich Hagensen, The Surfdusters recorded three full length CDs of instrumentals mostly composed by band members – ‘Raincoast Rumble’…‘Surf After Dark’…and ‘Save The Waves’; one 7” vinyl EP ‘Waves Of Pleasure’, and were on scores of vinyl, cassette and CD instrumental releases and compilations throughout the world.Besides Johnston and Hagensen, the original group included bassist Dave Guindon; keyboardist Joanne Banks, and drummer John Hanson. Ex-Powder Blues saxophonist Gordie Bertram occasionally played and recorded with the band and, in 1994, Frank Nichols replaced Hanson on skins. Ralph Johnston, who played on and composed most of The Surfdusters early vinyl and cassette releases and their first CD, left the band in 1995 to form industrial surf band Quonset. In 1996, lead guitarist Mark Brodie briefly recorded and played with the group before leaving to form Mark Brodie And The Beaver Patrol and later, The Metalunas. Scott Smith then joined as lead guitarist and Grant Shankaruk also came on board as the new bassist when Guindon bailed out in 1995. This grouping (Smith, Hagensen, Shankaruk, Banks and Nichols) picked up the pace with increased live dates and they recorded The Surfdusters second CD in 1998 plus other sessions in 1999. - from http://surfdusters.com/trax:

The Undertones "Listening In - Radio Sessions 1978-1982" 2004

A personal favourite, from the first notes of You've Got My Number on my 1979 school trip to England. For fans and everybody else. Enjoy! (Ravachol)While the Buzzcocks may have done punk-pop first (and arguably best), the Undertones may well have had more fun with it than anybody anywhere, and no one ever blended the naïve sweetness of teen angst with the bitter energy of buzzsaw guitars the way Derry's finest did. The Undertones' first two albums (and nearly all their singles) are essential listening, and this collection of seven sessions recorded for BBC radio hardly improves upon the originals, but it captures the group's bright, passionate sound with the rough immediacy of a good live album, something the Undertones failed to record during their heyday. While the band certainly gains polish and confidence over the course of these 27 tracks, what's most pleasantly surprising is how little they changed otherwise -- from their first moments, John O'Neill and Damian O'Neill's interlocking guitars and Feargal Sharkey's keening vocals hit their mark just right, and the band rarely made a false move after that. While the final four tracks (from the brave but ultimately unsatisfying Sin of Pride album) lower the overall averages, it's hard to beat an album with songs like "Get Over You," "Family Entertainment," "Here Comes the Summer," "What's With Terry," and "You're Welcome," and the covers of "Rock n' Roll" (Gary Glitter, not Lou Reed) and "(Just Like) Romeo and Juliet" confirm these guys never lost touch with their teenage canteen band roots. Fine stuff, and I have a hard time imagining any kind of fan of the Undertones not enjoying this.(Mark Deming, Allmusic)

Ernie K-Doe "Ernie K-Doe" 1972

Filing Ernie K-Doe among the myriad one-hit-wonders littering the rock & roll landscape is an enormous disservice to artist and listener alike -- consider K-Doe's scorching, self-titled Janus LP, a deeply funky effort produced by Allen Toussaint that remains a lost classic of New Orleans R&B. Toussaint's soulful, infectious arrangements wonderfully complement K-Doe's eccentric vocals, guiding the singer through the twisted narrative of Southern soul from the mud-baked Memphis sound of Stax ("Who Ever's Thrilling You Is Killing Me") to the Crescent City funk of the Meters ("Lawdy Mama") and beyond. What K-Doe lacks as a traditional vocalist he more than compensates for as a pure entertainer, and it's impossible to imagine cuts like the sex-crazed "Here Come the Girls" achieving such libidinous transcendence in the hands of a more conventional performer.(Jason Ankeny, Allmusic)

The Mermen "Moe's Alley - 2007-06-16" 2007

The Mermen are an American rock band from San Francisco, California that formed in 1989. The group's sound is rooted in surf and psychedelic music of the 1960s, but delves into many genres and is influenced mainly by band songwriter & guitarist Jim Thomas' modern melodic visions. The band's music is entirely instrumental. One of the odder and more wonderful bands to emerge from the surf music revival, the Mermen race between high-octane surf anthems and spaced-out blasts of psychedelia. Neither their albums nor their live shows follow any sort of expected or ordinary path, and the band has made many sincere attempts to get away from the surf music label. Based in San Francisco, the band has developed a broad cult following, encourages tapers, and has developed a strong relationship with radio, resulting in numerous radio broadcasts, some of which were compiled for The Mermen Live at the Haunted House (1994). The Mermen came together almost by accident in 1989, when guitarist Thomas was 35. He was working in a San Francisco music store and experimenting with demo recording equipment, although he didn't really consider himself a musician and had never played in a band. Before long he was joined by bassist Allan Whitman and drummer Martyn Jones, neither of whom fit any kind of pre-determined image of surf musicians (both men, like Thomas, were in their mid-30s), helping to propel the band away from its surf guitar roots, despite the first album, Krill Slippin' (1989, CD reissue in 1995), being essentially a pastiche of surf music to that date. Their next album, Food for Other Fish (1994), saw a dramatic shift in the overall Mermen sound, as Thomas allowed himself free reign to improvise and try a variety of different sounds and techniques, aided by a huge rack of effects boxes and a floor full of effects pedals. The wall of sound generated by Thomas, combined with the distinctive work of Whitman and Jones, brought about comparisons with Sonic Youth alongside those to Dick Dale. Both of these descriptions are effectively limiting, however, as the Mermen sound does a good job of defying description -- while the band can do the surf music sound as well as anyone, they are even more adept at pushing into sometimes experimental spaces that take in everyone from John Coltrane to Pink Floyd. Their following continued to grow in the year between the release of Food for Other Fish and the original 1995 release of A Glorious Lethal Euphoria, a 72-minute tour de force originally released by Toadaphile Records. The album drew widespread attention, selling out its first runs. The activity drew the attention of Mesa/Bluemoon Records, a division of Atlantic, who proceeded to sign the band, releasing a revised version of A Glorious Lethal Euphoria later in 1995. An EP, Songs of the Cows, recorded in three days in the midst of a tour was released in 1996. Besides the "official" CD releases, the Mermen have also released a number of limited-edition cassettes featuring early, live, and radio station performances, as well as The Mermen Sing Merry Christmas to You. Taking some time to craft the official follow-up to A Glorious Lethal Euphoria, the Mermen finally returned in 2000 with the full-length The Amazing California Health and Happiness Road Show. ~ Steven McDonaldtrax:

The Undertones "The Best Of The Undertones - Teenage Kicks" 1993

Seeing as how there are only four Undertones albums, and fully three of them are brilliant, the fourth, 1982's The Sin of Pride, is a misguided attempt to recast the group as slick and soulful dance-poppers, but even it sounds pretty good in comparison to singer Feargal Sharkey's positively wretched solo albums from the mid-'80s, it's really silly not to simply buy them all. However, the cautious newcomer might want to check out the U.K. compilation Teenage Kicks: The Best of the Undertones, a smartly chosen mix of singles and album tracks that shows that even in their noisier early days, as demonstrated by the title track and "Get over You," two of the finest singles of the post-punk era, this Northern Ireland quintet were among the canniest pop songwriters of the era. The hooks in these choruses are undeniable, and guitarists John and Damian O'Neill were able to create unforgettable hooks even out of a measly two or three notes. The set traces their development into more sophisticated, adult pop, culminating in the excellent 1981 effort The Positive Touch, before losing the thread with the aptly titled The Sin of Pride. Essential for newcomers, but redundant for fans, who already have all these songs.(Stewart Mason, Allmusic)trax:

"Swingin' Creepers! A Tribute To The Ventures" 1999

Some of these groups take their Ventures so seriously, they up everything. More reverb! More twang!I've purchased other excellent CD's from MuSick before and they never disappoint. They must be the best instrumental and surf music label today. What DEL-FI was in the 60's, MuSick Recordings is today. They command the genre and with this compilation, they should be elevated to major label status. The Ventures were the best instrumental rock band ever and their songs are featured in brand new ways on this top-talent-heavy compilation. Satan's Pilgrims, the best of the modern surf bands, combine 2 of the most obscure, yet great, Ventures songs, "Escape" and "Psychedelic Venture", into a rockin' medley that will leave you wanting more. The Boss Martians take the "dry-guitar" sound the Ventures made famous and give their own wild spin on "Guitar Freakout". King of 60's fuzz guitar, Davie Allan simply kicks on "Lullaby of the Leaves" and Germany's Looney Tunes shred with a faster than hell "A Go-Go Dancer". Other highlights include "Swingin' Creeper" by the groovy Tiki Tones, "Stop Action" by the smart pairing of Eddie Angel (Los Straitjackets) with the Omega Men and "Journey to the Stars" by the Space Cossacks, another great instro band of this new wave of surf music. Any real fan of rock n roll should own this one...it just smokes!! - By john brown (Seattle, WA)

Simtec & Wylie "Gettin' Over The Hump" '71

Chicago's Sam & Dave's first and only album contains some righteous riffs, including their pull-yourself-up-by-your-bootstraps anthem "Gotta Get Over the Hump" and "Bootleggin'." The most interesting cut is the duo's funky remake of Rod Stewart's "Maggie May." Part of their backing band -- Ronald Simmons, Bobby Pointer, and Fred White -- became a part of Southside Movement, who started a little commotion with "I've Been Watching You" in 1973. This same album was reissued in 1971 on Mercury Records as Bootleggin’.(Andrew Hamilton, Allmusic)trax:
